And welcome to Comic Relief Does Glee Club and the studio heats.

We've been from Glasgow to London

and Belfast to Cardiff plus a few places in-between in our search for

Britain's top young performers and it's all in support of Red Nose Day.

Today three acts will battle it out

for those all-important positions on the Glee Club leaderboard.

The acts with the top five scores will perform again

in the live finals and one group will walk away with the title of

Comic Relief Does Glee Club 2013 winners.

OK, now, because we need to be here, we need someone to be back there.

And who better than CBBC's answer to Cameron Diaz...

So, Naomi, we see you've ditched Steve Backshall for some younger,

more talented and handsome models.

I know! I can't wait to meet them!

Anyway, we thought we could give you a little bit of advice

in presenting this show,

because this is our third year of presenting it.

Mark has almost passed his presenting exams, haven't you?

-Fingers crossed.

-Don't worry, you'll do it, you'll do it.

OK, so all you need to do is take a look down that camera right there,

just read the link, but make sure you do it natural, yeah?

-Good luck.

-Yeah, but I don't need an autocue.

I can remember my lines no problem.

I mean, do you read anything?

To be honest, that's going to hurt him more than it does me!

You're not wrong. I can do this without autocue. Watch this.

It looks like it's time for Naomi to get herself backstage

and stay there for the duration of the show.

-Hang on, it doesn't say that.

-Yeah, it does.

Now, no self-respecting talent search would be complete

without people to keep us two on the straight and narrow, to dazzle us

with their expert knowledge, to confuse us

with their raised eyebrows and head tilts.

It is, of course, our judges!

Yeah! It's lovely to see you guys. Carrie, you look amazing, as ever.

-Thank you.

-Lads, you don't scrub up to bad yourselves.

-Yeah, exactly.

Now, do you think that the groups this year

have upped their game, would you say?

I think they have. I think that's one of

the benefits of being in our third series,

is that they're thinking, "Right, we know what to expect now."

Exactly, it's very exciting.

Guys, if you'd like to make your way to your seats,

and whilst they do that,

let's find out a little bit more about our fab four.

They're the top experts, they're the judges in the know.

Today let's find out about vocal coach David Grant.

DAVID: 'My expectations this year are higher than ever.

'I'm expecting people to come on to that stage

'and to completely take over.

'They have to entertain, they have to give their best.

'My hope and my expectation is that nobody leaves that stage

'feeling as though they left

'their best off the stage.'

CHEERING

Wow! Who knew?

Who knew that our judges were so talented?

-That is why they are the judges.

-True.

Now, for the important bit,

15 groups have made it through to the heats today.

Three of those acts will battle it out for our experts,

who will be scoring them on vocal ability, creativity and performance.

All four judges will be giving marks out of ten

for each of the disciplines,

so there are plenty of points to be won.

And, in the unlikely event of a tie,

head judge Carrie will decide who gets the medals.

The acts with the top five scores across the heats

will then compete in the live finals,

where it will be up to you at home to vote for your favourites.

And the winners will take home the fantastic

is getting on backstage with our groups.

Yes, I'm here with Raveheart, The Peppermints

and Figure Of Eight, and there's a lot of nervous energy

running around this room, let me tell you.

Let's come to Raveheart first. You've been here before.

Does it feel different this time?

It definitely feels different this time.

I'd say there's a more different group here as well

and we're just ready to get out there and do our best.

We've got confidence, we've got good nerves, so...

You're looking nice and relaxed. Well done.

Peppermints, our little breath of fresh air,

how are you feeling, not just about performing in front of the judges,

but also in front of a studio audience?

Really good. We all love to just,

like, get on the stage and just perform.

-It's what we really love.

-Not fazing you at all?

-No.

I'm pleased to hear that. And let's come over here to Figure Of Eight.

Are you feeling all ready for this challenge, guys?

I mean, can you see yourselves in the semi-final?

I think we're just really excited for this performance

and we'll concentrate and we're really excited

to see our studio audience as well,

cos we haven't performed in front of a big audience before,

so it's quite exciting.

So our groups here arrived in Glasgow

for the first time yesterday, ready for the studio heats,

but was it all fun and games, or did it all suddenly become very real?

Let's see how they got on when they met for the first time.

Today's three Glee Clubs seemed like they were going to make

a bit of noise getting to know each other.

THEY CHAT

So we gave them the run of Glasgow's Science Centre,

just to make sure they had enough space to play around.

We have The Peppermints,

Raveheart

and Figure Of Eight.

Our groups went all-out in their quest to have some fun.

There was even a chance to compare notes

on getting ready for their day in studio.

The adrenaline that you get on stage and when it's gone really well,

-you're like, "Oh, it's gone so well!"

-We'll be so excited tomorrow.

We'll be like, "Whoa!"

And then nervous at the same time. It's that mix of, like,

good and scared emotions.

Good, like, to have a day without any pressure

before we go into the competition.

Now you've made me nervous. Cheers.

It's just like a really relaxed kind of atmosphere,

-so it's good.

-It was fun.

-OK, Carrie.

First song of the show. What did you think to the vocals?

Well, actually, I thought that was a really great first round.

For our guys over here, you gave it so much more confidence than you

gave us in that audition and that's what we wanted to see from you guys.

I love the individuality.

Just watch your vocals when you're dancing,

that you don't drop the vocals off. Keep the vocals up.

Middle group, The Peppermints,

there's only five of you and yet you sounded like eight people.

So, well done. You're still bursting with energy.

For me, Raveheart, you were fantastic in that round.

Fantastic singing.

I love the fact that you started on the melody

and then just broke out into harmony.

Really good creativity and that's one of the things

we're going to be judging on today.

David?

Well, Raveheart, confident, tightly choreographed and punchy.

Peppermints, you look like you're having a great time.

You are the kids that make people smile.

You know, you just go, "They're having a great time!"

Figure Of Eight, I love the balance of girl-to-boy vocals.

I love the fact that you do so much in unison in the two octaves.

Once again, I really love your choreography

and the rhythmicality of your singing

is a real strength of yours and you showed that again.

John, you met these guys way back at the beginning of the search.

Who did it for you there?

I have to say each group had strengths.

It's almost like I'd like to see one aspect of each group put into one.

So what I will say is that continue...

Remember, I mentioned this at the previous rounds.

Practise, rehearse, perform.

So I think every group can actually raise the bar even more.

But it's a very good, strong start.

-And Sisco, were you entertained?

-I was entertained.

This is the first time I've seen you guys live,

so it is exciting for me.

I think for me Raveheart had the complete package for me.

I think you guys got the performance aspect of it,

you've got the choreography, it wasn't too much

and I love the blend, vocally, of all of you guys.

Peppermints...

APPLAUSE

Peppermints, for me the choice of harmony for me

was a little too haunting and I couldn't digest it properly

because it didn't suit the song, in my opinion.

But what I love about you guys is your styling,

I love the choreography, didn't interfere with vocals.

A very smart choice by your leader.

You guys performed it very well.

And Figure Of Eight, I think that you guys vocally sound great,

but I think you guys have to think about the performing aspect of it.

It needs to be believable and not so robotic.

Allow yourself to live.

I say the word "living" all the time. Go past your maximum.

You'll be surprised what you can achieve

when you just go up a notch, just a little bit.

But well done to you all.

Can I just say, I love that

The Peppermints are still stood there like that.

Brilliant. Stand at ease! It's all right. OK.

Whilst we check and verify the scores for Round 1,

let's take a look at some messages from our celebrity chums.

I can reveal that the judges' combined score for Raveheart

out of a possible 120 points is...

Well done, guys. Not a bad start at all.

-Are you happy with those scores?

-ALL: Yes.

Well, there is still one more challenge to go,

but, before that, let's take a look at the scoreboard after Round 1.

Raveheart take the lead with 90 points.

The Peppermints have 62 points

and Figure Of Eight have 67 points.

But with 120 points available

to each group in Round 2,

it could all change.

Oh, well done, all of you. I thought you were excellent.

Raveheart, currently in the lead with 90 points.

And they said you were the complete package.

-How do you feel about that?

-It's amazing.

All the rehearsal, the time we've put in,

it's really worked off and we're just giving it 100%

and we'll do the exact same with the next song as well.

Good for you. Over here, I feel like

I should stand with my hands on my hips when I talk to you lot.

The Peppermints, they said it sounded like

there was eight of you singing and there's only five.

But they did mention some sort of haunting harmonies.

What do you make of that?

Yeah, we're going to take away all of the judges' comments

and work harder than we've ever worked before.

Do you even understand what haunting harmonies mean,

cos I'm not sure I do.

GIRL LAUGHS

-I mean, did a ghost train you?

-No.

No. It wasn't haunting.

I thought it was absolutely lovely and we are all loving your style.

It is spot-on. Do you think Sisco could pull off your style?

-No.

-No way!

And over to Figure Of Eight. Hi, guys.

They did say you should maybe bring up the vocals,

bring up your performance a little bit.

Do you think you could have given it any more?

Umm... No, I think we definitely gave it our best shot that time,

but I think we can really step it up to the next level

with the next song, cos, as the judges were saying,

it's more that we were kind of too robotic, and with our next song

I think it's more raw and emotional, so we can put more into it and...

yeah, blend our vocals.

Well, at this stage of the game,

there's everything still to play for, so I'm going to wish you

all the very best of luck with your next song.

They come from just up the road in Motherwell,

but their journey to the heats has been a long one.

Motherwell's Raveheart blew the judges away with their wall of sound

from the moment they took the Glee Club stage.

These wings are made to fly.

Anybody who wants to win this

is going to have to kick and scratch and push past you.

But Raveheart are much more than just bravehearts

-when it comes to performing as a group.

-We've got a lot of attitude.

We've got a lot of attitude and were very loud, and out there.

But at the same time, we've got a great bond we share together

and we are just like a big family. I know that's cheesy.

Have you changed your outfits from last time?

We still have the tartan but we have changed the back of it.

-And have you worked it into your choreography that you get to...

-Yes!

Oh, my...it's gorgeous.

Do you like it? It says Glee Club under there.

-How has it made you feel? Seeing this?

-It's really exciting.

Excited, but nervous at the same time.

Being on the stage, it is amazing.

It is such an amazing experience to just be altogether.

Once you start getting the harmonies right it just sounds amazing

and it makes you feel so much better.

'Can they wow Glasgow one more time?'

No matter what happens we are still going to give it our all,

and hope for the best.

David, do you think Raveheart should be proud of that performance?

I think they should be really proud of that performance.

I said when I first saw them that I thought

they were going to have to be the ones to beat.

I thought anybody who wants to win this is going to have to

kick and scratch and fight their way past you

and you've done nothing to change my mind.

You guys look confident, you look assertive, you look certain,

you look like you think you can win this.

John, vocally, were these guys good enough?

-LAUGHTER

-Stupid question!

-My, my, my! What can I say?

What can I say? You know what? It really is... Well, you set the bar.

-And you still do. You're fantastic.

He doesn't say that easily, John, usually.

Now, Sisco, did the choreography work with this song, do you reckon?

It did, I think the choreography complimented the vocals perfectly,

you didn't let it distract you and you guys sounded very, very nice.

The blend was beautiful.

At first, because it's such a powerful song, I was like,

"Is it going to be enough?"

But as soon as the second soloist came in I thought, "Here we go."

-And, you guys, the choreography was brilliant.

-Wow.

OK, Carrie, can you see Raveheart as finalists?

Absolutely brilliant.

When I saw the song you were singing, I thought,

"Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, they've really chosen a hard song."

Brilliant, though. So, well done.

And one thing I really love about watching you guys is

you really serve one another. No-one is trying to outshine the next,

and that is something I didn't see before.

I love that uniformity of you as a group, and serving one another

is a very important part of being in a group.

-Yeah, give it up for Raveheart!

I think we were wanting to do it because it represents us,

like our bond, like, sisters.

-Yeah.

you think you can win. Do you think that's true?

-We hope so!

The Peppermints were a breath of fresh air for John

when he met them in Newcastle.

I enjoyed that. I won't forget that today.

And their performance at the judges' auditions

had David fizzing with excitement.

Spice Girl-esque energy, that's what I liked about it.

Sisco, did that performance have swagger for you?

It did, I can definitely see the Cher Lloyd influence

and I'm glad that you've brought that into your performance.

I wish, you know, the bit with the rap? Instead of singing it

I wish you'd spoke it, so you can be more free with it,

as if you were rapping.

You sung the spoken parts, and I would have preferred you to rap it

and be a bit more, ugh! In your face!

But what I do love about it is you guys were

so uniform with the choreography and the performance aspect,

I definitely preferred this performance

to your first one. Well done!

Carrie, do you think that was the right song choice for their vocals?

I absolutely think it was exactly the right song choice.

One of the things that you have to have

when you are a Glee Club is to know who you are

and to know what you should perform and how to play to your strengths.

And that is exactly what you did.

Your dancing was great, it was all about the energy,

all about the attitude, all about you five as a little team out there.

That really cut across and I think that is a real strength for you.

I think you did really well.

And, finally, David, did that come together for you?

For me that was what they're all about. Energy, fun,

great song choice and just sort of like a minute-and-a-half burst

of in-your-faceness, and I really enjoyed that.

Sisco said he thought this was better than your first performance,

but he said it perhaps needed a bit more "oomph",

whereas Carrie and David said it was full of energy.

What do you make of them? Not completely agreeing there, are they?

I think we tried our definite hardest on that stage

and we really, really enjoyed it.

You really did give it that in-your-faceness.

in fact, almost too easy as far as head judge Carrie was concerned.

My question to you is, why did you not choose a more complex song?

With such strong singers, such ability to do good harmonies,

I'd like to have heard more layering, more complexity, because

I think you're capable of more. It makes me want to ask the question,

are you confident enough?

How did it feel when you knew you got through?

-Oh, it was fantastic.

I remember quite vividly that Carrie said that we should have

Do you think their choreography worked there?

It did, it was good that you didn't do too much

because it is such a beautiful song

and it would be a shame to distract from the lyrics and the melody.

I thought it was a bit of an adventurous choice,

because it is such a power ballad. The original is such a rock anthem,

but I think what you guys have to work on as well

is just the organic theme of things. I only believed one of you,

and it was the young lady there. I don't know your name,

-what's your name?

-Tara.

You have a very organic way of saying the lyrics,

and I really believed.

I looked into your eyes and I understood the lyrics.

I think you guys as a whole need to do that

so it feels a little more warm.

Especially if you're going to do such a lovey-dovey song.

Carrie, did that arrangement work for you?

I felt that Figure Of Eight were really sincere,

I really loved the sincerity of it.

I loved the arrangement,

I love the fact that no-one over-sang.

David, have they done enough to make it through to the final?

I don't know.

But I hope so.

Because something that really impressed me there,

I've got to tell you,

a lot of artists, even professional singers,

if they find the beginning of a song difficult,

they fall apart.

And it takes them halfway through the song to recover.

You found coming in on that first line difficult.

By the time you got to the end of the first line, you were on it.

And I couldn't read it in your face

and I couldn't read it in the rest of your performance.

And that really impressed me.

It really impressed me that none of you dipped as a result of that.

You picked it up, you kept it up.

You mean when they all sang together?

I'm talking about that very first line, the first line, the solo line.

You were finding it difficult to find your way in.

Once you were on it, you were on it.

And you didn't show it, and that really impressed me,

so well done, you.

Well done! You've got Carrie and David arguing over here!

It's amazing! John, that was quite a big, big song.

Yeah, you chose a killer song. It's a huge ballad, it requires

a lot of soul, a lot of maturity, I mean,

it's massive, so what I like about you, Figure Of Eight,

is that you do sing as a family, it's like this gang of singers.

That emotional sentiment, I see with you guys.

The only thing I would say is, I wish you hadn't started the chorus

in gear five, because I felt that if you had just,

if there was a little bit more warmth in the onset of the chorus,

and then you built that chorus,

the gear changes would have been better for the climax.

so it was just lovely and I felt honoured to start the song,

and it was really lovely and when they all came in and backed me up

it was great. I really enjoyed it.

what do you make of that?

Yeah, thank you very much for saying that, but obviously

I'm really happy that we all did it

and I think with the other comment, where we were just...

I think we did plan to start the first chorus and then build,

but before we were just so excited, we were like

going to give it to everyone.

It doesn't matter, because you nearly made Carrie cry!
