-Hello!

-And welcome to Comic Relief Does Glee Club and the studio heats.

We've looked into every nook and cranny and

no stone has been left unturned in our search for Britain's top

young performers and it's all in support of Red Nose Day.

That's right. Three acts will battle it out

for one of the coveted top five positions

on the Glee Club leaderboard

and a guaranteed place in the live finals.

I mean, it's just so exciting. Aargh!

BOTH: Aargh!

-AUDIENCE:

-Aargh!

-CREW:

-Aargh!

All right, all right. Calm down. We've got a long way to go.

We don't want to use up all of our energy at the start of the show.

-We're not as young as we used to be.

-We're really not.

Now, one person who definitely wouldn't be seen screaming

with excitement, because she's just so hard of nails,

you know what I'm saying, it's the unflappable Naomi Wilkinson!

CHEERING

-She's excited as well!

-She's excited!

-Yeah!

Good. Hey, how you doing, Naomi?

-You excited like us?

-I'm so excited! How are you boys feeling?

We're very good. Actually, last night, Mark and I,

we were watching an episode of Naomi's Nightmares Of Nature.

I tell you something, you are one brave lady, you!

Is there nothing that you're scared of? Anything?

Well, I do have this one recurring nightmare.

Basically, I'm in a studio, a bit like this,

and there are these two sort of ghoulish, gruesome characters,

both in flashy suits, one looks a bit like a freakish Michael McIntyre

and the other, well, he looks all right, but he's a bit dim.

It's horrible!

LAUGHTER

Why don't you take yourself backstage?

-Safe from the gruesome twosome.

Now, we often get asked, "What makes this show such a success?"

And, without a blink of an eye, I always say,

"Me and Mark." And then I always get asked,

"Who brings the glamour to the show?"

And without a blink of an eye, I always say, "Me and Mark."

Then they ask, "Who spends most time in make-up and wardrobe?"

-Me and Mark. No!

Today, let's find out more about new judge John Modi.

-JOHN:

'I'm looking for a glee club that literally is non-stop energy,

'they have a wall of sound, a blend of sound that is unique

'and unlike anything else and you leave them

'with a big smile on your face and remembering the song they sang.'

Now, for the important bit.

15 groups have made it through to the heats.

Today, three of those acts will battle it out for our experts,

who will be scoring them on vocal ability, creativity and performance.

All four judges will be giving marks out of ten for each of

the disciplines, so there are plenty of points to be won.

And, in the unlikely event of a tie,

head judge Carrie will decide who gets the medals.

The acts with the top five scores across the heats will then

compete in the live finals,

where it will be up to you at home to vote for your favourite.

And the winners will take home this fantastic

Let's find out how Naomi's getting on with the groups backstage.

So, yes, I am here backstage. Thank you very much, boys.

I'm with The Sweets, Impact and M.A.D.

Let's say hello to The Sweets. How are you doing today?

Good, thank you.

Now, you're the only original group back from the last series.

So we didn't put you off?

Yeah, it was really good last year, so we've come back again,

-standing strong.

-Good for you.

And is it true that you take part in other talent shows and events?

Yeah, we do a lot of talent shows in our local area

and we've been on the radio a couple of times.

-And how do you get on with those?

-Yeah, they're good.

This is a lot different to what we normally do,

but it's exciting to have a new adventure.

Nicely put. Good luck today with your performances. Over to Impact.

Now, what's going through your minds thinking,

"We're not just performing in front of the judges,

"but in front of a studio audience"?

It's nerve-wracking, but I think we're all excited, really excited,

and we've got such good competition and, yeah.

-Have you performed in front of an audience before?

-Yeah.

We, as a group, have cos we've been together about two years

and we just do the odd thing.

So it'll be a complete piece of cake for you. And over to M.A.D.

Now, you're probably one of our most experienced groups.

Tell me about some of the venues you've performed in.

Well, we've been to the O2 and we've performed at Wembley

and we've been at the Indigo, as well. Many things.

Right, so this should be really easy for you.

Where do you take your inspiration from?

Oh, with gospel music and Beyonce.

-Anyone that's really in there, you know?

-Great.

Well, all the best with your performances.

Now, all these groups arrived here in Glasgow yesterday. Was it sweet?

Did anyone make an impact? Or did they all drive each other M.A.D?

Did you see what I did? Do you like that?

Let's see how they got on when they met for the first time.

For M.A.D, The Sweets and Impact,

meeting up was a great chance to bowl each other over.

We're M.A.D and we're from London.

We're Impact and we're from Brighton.

'Would our glee clubs all get on, or would it be a bit hit and miss?'

I think I'm the most amazing bowler in the whole entire world.

No, she's lying. OK, I think I'm the most amazing bowler.

Really, I'm just rubbish. I'm rubbish.

-Bowling, for us, is like we ain't very good at it.

Yeah, it's good to meet one of the glee club's, that they come

from where we come from, so it's nice to have someone from our home.

And different. Seeing someone different.

From different areas as well.

It's really nice to me the other glee clubs.

They're all so talented.

Such stiff competition this year. But it's fine.

They seem really lovely. And it's nice.

We're all kind of forming one big family. So it's really cute.

I start freaking out. I'm like, "No, there's competition!

"There's competition! We're going to lose!"

-I'm like, "Don't think like that!"

-"We have to rehearse!"

-She's like, "In my room, now!"

With the studio performance a day away, there was still time to

relax, but will our groups strike it lucky in front of the judges?

OK, Carrie, first chance to see the groups today.

What did you think to that?

I think they did really well.

I think this particular song is actually very difficult to sing.

The Sweets, I always love your sound.

I think you have a lovely ensemble sound. It's very in tune.

You always deliver vocally.

For me, it lacked something in energy, just visually,

there just wasn't that "Err!" that you kind of need.

Whatever the word "Err" means.

Impact, the blending on the voices together, you've got bigger

challenges cos you've got guys and girls working together,

but the blend wasn't as strong as I've heard you sing before.

I normally love your technique.

M.A.D, beautiful arrangement, beautifully sung,

beautifully blended.

You bounced and sat back on the beat.

Beautiful.

APPLAUSE

David, who impressed you?

Well, I have to say that they all

impressed me for different reasons.

I want to start with The Sweets.

I thought they had a real authority.

They looked to be really confident,

really comfortable

and they looked like they were enjoying it.

When it came to Impact, I thought they had a real accuracy

and the boys being in there, it is a challenge,

but I actually think it makes the harmonies fatter

and richer than just girls, because there's a greater spread.

And I really like that sound.

And then when it came to M.A.D, they have attitude.

They've got swagger and they give the song swing.

Suddenly, a pop song sounded like an urban song,

because of the way they sung it, because of their phrasing,

because of their pronunciation, because of their timing.

They actually made the song completely their own.

APPLAUSE

Sisco, did that performance tick all the boxes for you?

It did and, like David said,

for different reasons.

The Sweets, when I looked at you,

I was extremely excited, cos you had the look going down,

you seem very comfortable when you're singing.

I believe when you're singing. I just thought it was a bit safe.

I was expecting just a little bit more.

But maybe you'll bring it for the second song, hopefully.

With Impact, I hear every single harmony,

but I'd didn't really feel that there was a blend.

Like, it wasn't as smooth as I wanted to.

Because you've got boy and girl vocalists,

I think you guys can really take it to another level,

because you can use that to your advantage.

M.A.D, I love the projection of the vocals.

You guys went straight in there.

I was like, "Oh, wow." You're not afraid to sing.

I love the way you sung it, and I loved everything about it.

I think you guys are really

cool-looking, cool-sounding. Well done.

I feel like a very proud

big brother at the moment.

My friend, David Grant, said that

Sweets, Carrie thought you made a lovely sound,

but perhaps lacking a little bit of, "Err!" Do you agree with that?

Yeah, I agree with that.

I think we could have, maybe, tried our hardest and just really...

But I think we did try.

-You've got a little more in new the next round, do you think?

-Yeah.

-How about giving them a bit of, "Err" now?

-THE SWEETS: Err!

AUDIENCE: Err!

Yeah, we've got the "Err" in the studio.

Impact, now, there was little mention that there might be

a bit of an issue with your blending.

Do you think that's fair?

Yeah, I mean it's slightly harder for us, cos we have boys in it,

but I think just maybe work on it a tiny bit and then we'll get it.

But David was loving the boys in it,

loving that it's got rich harmonies and it sounded really full.

And you are representing the boys on the show today. Yeah.

So, what do you think about that, lads?

I think it's great that we're here representing the boys.

We just really want to show them in our next song that we can get

that blend with boys and girls.

OK. Round 2, you're going to show it. Show them how it's done.

Bringing a touch of urban to your song.

How do you make a song your own?

I think we just try to blend really well with our harmonies

and put our own stamp on it, really rock with it.

-Is that what you do, you've got to rock with it?

-Yeah. Rock with it.

I love your sound.

On the other side, I want to say your solos sound like you've

been doing it for a few weeks and you're just finding your feet.

I'm going to be completely blunt with you.

The solos are not necessary,

you should give the solos to the strongest singers.

We've limited the amount of solos, really.

We sound better, like, as a whole group.

That's what the judges commented on

before, so we've taken that into consideration.

Harmonies are a lot stronger.

And we've worked on our harmonies, and we're singing more as a group,

so that's got a bigger sound, a stronger sound.

-How are you feeling today?

-Nervous.

-Come and see the lovely set.

Is it bigger? Bigger than last time.

How do you feel about performing in front of all the studio

audience as well as the judges?

It's exciting, I think you get a buzz off of audiences.

-It doesn't put you off?

-No.

Who do you think is your biggest threat today?

Both. They're so different, but they're so good.

-Have you told everyone at school?

-Yeah.

-What did they say?

-They were like, "good luck"!

-Are they going to watch?

-Yeah.

We're just best friends. Whenever we're together...

David, do you reckon The Sweets should be proud of that performance?

Yeah, I think they should.

I do remember us saying that you were using too many soloists,

and you've fixed that, and your ensemble sound is still good.

My only negative, if there is one, is that in parts you seemed to look

as if you were marking it, and I really wanted to see

just a bit more energy and oomph in the performance.

Sisco, do you think the choreography worked with that song?

I think it did. I keep on repeating myself, I guess.

Sometimes groups do too much choreography

and it affects the vocals,

but I think you guys were smart about your choreographic choices.

I think you prioritised the vocals, which was great.

I'm going to agree with David, I just wanted a bit more.

I think your maximum would be my 60%, you know what I mean?

You need to go bit more, just so we can really, really,

really feel what you're saying.

Because it looks nice, but we need to feel it.

-John, vocally, were they good enough?

-You girls are like a girl band.

You sound lovely, and I think what these guys are saying is true.

You need to start believing in yourselves even more,

and then you're going to get that 100% maximum performance.

Finally, Carrie, do you see The Sweets as a finalist?

Absolutely, I really enjoyed that performance.

I loved you... Your first soloist, beautiful, beautiful voice,

sweetheart. Lovely.

And I loved the fact that you listened to what we said.

So few people actually go away and think, "What do they mean by that?"

You've really worked that out, listened to what we said,

and come back and delivered exactly what we asked for.

I love Beyonce because she's got an amazing voice,

and we've got Girls Aloud lovers.

And how about you? Carrie giving you some really high praise there,

Impact made a pretty big impression on the judges in making it

-through to today's show.

-I'm really blown away by your solos. Amazing.

Ensemble wise, it's pitchy.

So, what have they done to improve on their performance as a group,

and have Carrie's words of advice stuck with them

as they get ready to take the stage once again?

What did she say to you last time?

-Can you remember?

-She said "wow", I remember her saying wow.

Is that all you remember? You blocked the rest out.

Oh, yeah, no, she did. She said work on your harmonies.

Which we've really tried to do this time.

They said dissect it, note by note, word by word, go through it,

and hopefully they'll see that we've really done that this time.

We're definitely looking forward to performing in the studio.

We're really keen to show the judges how we've progressed as well.

We want to show them that we've taken the comments on board

and grown as a group, improved, yeah.

It's really good fun being here.

Our strength is to act it,

-I think we just need to put a little bit more acting into it.

-Emotion.

That's one of my favourite songs. I love that song.

And I think the layering that you guys chose to do was amazing.

It was really complex, I thought, but so easy to listen to and digest.

My only critique...

I would have liked to have heard the first soloist

cos I think your voice really suited the surroundings

that you were accompanied with vocally.

But honestly, guys, that was so much better. Well done.

Carrie, did they show enough technical ability in their singing?

They certainly showed technical ability

in their choice of arrangement. That was complex,

blended brilliantly. I loved it.

I feel like I've watched Barbershop, but with a backing track.

Fantastic. Really good.

-David, did it all come together for you?

-Yeah, it all came together.

This kind of stuff is hard to do. This kind of doo-wop

where everybody has their harmonies and then they switch harmonies

and move off onto other things rhythmically. They did it perfectly.

You didn't leave anything in the rehearsal room.

You brought it all to the stage and did it really well.

That was a bit of an improvement from round one.

-You've got to be happy with those comments?

We were really hoping to show the judges that we can blend

and we can do these things they're asking for. We're so glad we did.

Yay! David mentioned you didn't leave anything

in the rehearsal room. You definitely didn't?

No. We've rehearsed, rehearsed, until it was absolutely perfect.

We didn't want to let anyone down, including you.

I'm pleased to hear that because I'm always leaving

my leg warmers behind. And also they mentioned how the boys

brought something to the performance. Yay! Go the boys!

-Are you happy with that?

-Yeah, so happy. Representing the boys

and the saxophones... We were very pleased. Very pleased.

-Has your voice ever been compared to a saxophone before?

-That is a first.

That is a first. But I'm going to take it. I'm happy with that.

to the judges' auditions. But there was a problem.

These guys impressed you in the first audition with their vocals.

-Do you know what I liked?

I liked you girls, obviously, from the beginning.

Your sound is very, very unique. Your vocal blend fantastic.

I think today you didn't get the soloists right.

I think there's some weaknesses that were a bit exposed

and I think that's the only area that might have let you down today.

OK. Carrie, what did you make of that performance?

I'm slightly confused, I have to say,

because in our audition show, you did Shackles.

I was like, "OK, I get this group. I get what they're about."

You've then done the first number today, a One Direction song.

You've made it R&B. Now we've got Taylor Swift. That's great.

Make it the same kind of sound.

Suddenly we get a totally different sound. Blending not as good.

Soloists not as strong.

I feel a little bit like, "Oh, come on, guys."

You're so good. You're so good.

In the audition rounds, I'm like, "Oh, my goodness.

"They're surely going to be in the final."

Now I'm sitting here thinking, "Oh. Will they?"

Right. Well, after Carrie's said that, David, do you think

-they have done enough to make the final?

-What I do know is this.

They have the potential to be awesome.

There were moments in that when they were singing together

and their blend is fatter than fat and it's really identifiable.

I felt like they didn't play fully to their strengths.

This is a group that actually... They have something extra.

They have something special.

But I don't necessarily think they brought everything

they had to the party this time.

OK. Sisco...

-Would it be mad... See what I did there, girls?

-Excellent.

..if these girls didn't get through to the final?

I think the judges are correct in what they said.

I think they're being a little harsh.

I think you guys took a risk which I'm down for.

The most important thing is that you work with your strengths

and that starts with the soloists.

Always stick to your style and add a spin to it.

Don't go completely out of your comfort zone

because then the result might not be as good as it can be.

The routine was a little adventurous.

It was a little too dynamic. But, you know what, guys?

I think they've been a little harsh on you. It was pretty good.

so we decided that we'd have something that unites us

for Taylor Swift's album so we thought red.
