My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
In this show, my team of artists take my killer moments... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
'And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
'Along the way, you'll get to pick up tips, tricks and techniques | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
'so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
'This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
'Coming up on Deadly Art, I meet a group of predators | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
'with strength, agility and incredible intelligence.' | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
They're a really powerfully-built animal. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
'Our art team put together a startling work of art.' | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
-They look fierce and hungry. -Hungry and deadly. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
'And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
'So, what are we looking at today?' | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
With its big brain and its facial expressions, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
it's perhaps not that surprising the chimpanzee | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
is more closely related to humans than any other animal. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
They share an astounding 98% of our genes. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
This is the seemingly-cute chimpanzee. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
'Chimpanzees are funny, charming and often likeable, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
'but when it comes to hunting, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
'they're also one of Africa's deadliest predators. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
'Yes, they definitely have a taste for fruit, for figs, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
'for bananas, but in between, they'll also hunt meat.' | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
Things like antelopes and monkeys. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
When they do, it's one of the most spine-chilling experiences. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
'So, who's taking on the Deadly Art challenge today?' | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
I'm Jo, I'm a painter and a general mess-maker. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist. And I'm up for today's Deadly Art. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
'Mike and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
'who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
'And here's the killer moment to capture in the artwork. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
'Possibly a side to chimpanzees that you haven't seen before. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
'When the hunt begins, they move at an incredible speed. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
'Using their terrific teamwork, they are formidable hunters.' | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
His teeth are fierce. I always thought they were quite cute. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
I didn't realise how powerful they are. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
We've got to make sure we show their deadly side today | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
and their teamwork when they're on the hunt. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
So we're doing a 2D body and a 3D head. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
-I'm working on the body. -I'll do the head. -OK. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
First, we need to draw out a chimp. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
So, get myself a big piece of board | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
and start with the vine. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
He's really long arms. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
'I'm looking forward to seeing some chimps in the Deadly Art studio. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
'But on Deadly 60 in Uganda, our expert local guides | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
'were taking us deep into the forest to track wild chimpanzees. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
'It looked like we were getting close.' | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Crikey! | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
That's not a chimp either. Those are monkeys. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
The chimp's going after them. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
No way! This is absolute chaos! | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
A lot of this is just big squabbles going on between the individuals, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:14
the senior ones disciplining the more junior ones, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
and they're just charging around in the treetops, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
causing absolute havoc. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
After a few hours of feasting, one of the males has got bored of figs. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
Here he comes. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
This way. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
Coming down this vine here. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
This is an adult male, just beginning to descend. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
A big male chimp like this | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
would be a fair bit smaller than me, but a lot stronger. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:48
The arms are proportionately much longer | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
and great for swinging through the treetops. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
It's a really powerfully-built animal. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
'Although great climbers, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
'chimps are too heavy to swing from tree to tree like monkeys, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
'so they come down when they need to move through the forest.' | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
Down and off. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny! | 0:04:10 | 0:04:11
(I'd give anything to be able to climb like that!) | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
Whoa! | 0:04:18 | 0:04:19 | |
They move with such purpose. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
You can see the bulk of him just brought down a great big branch. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
There's more coming down from the treetops here. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
'I can't believe they're coming down all around us. What an experience! | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
'It's awe-inspiring to see their power and agility. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
'Let's get back to the studio.' | 0:04:42 | 0:04:43
I've got all three chimps cut out. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
I'm painting them in a street-art graffiti style | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
using layers of stencils to create that fur texture. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
This chimp head has been sculpted from a block of clay. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
I want to make a mould from it so we can make more chimp heads. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
I've got silicone rubber, which I'll coat it all with. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
This takes a long time to dry. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
The silicone rubber is dry. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
Now for the moment of truth. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
Peel it back. Now we have a mould. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
The next thing to do is line it with resin and fibreglass. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
'Mike's stencils and Jo's heads are coming on nicely. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
'Now, fancy drawing your own chimpanzee? | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
'Jo's going to take a break to show you a Deadly Doodle.' | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
I'm going to show you how to draw this chimpanzee. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
As always, we're going to start off with some basic shapes. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
Two large ovals in the middle of your page. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
And in the middle of them, a heart. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
And then coming out of your heart, another oval. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
Two curved lines, joining them up. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
And then big mug handles coming down the side, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
which will show us where to put his ears. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
Now, chimp eyes are almost exactly the same as human eyes. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:14
Two circles inside for the irises. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
And we can join it all up | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
with a line going over the top of his head | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
and back down the other side. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:22
Lastly, we're just going to draw a line | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
which will be where his mouth is. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
Now I'm going to go in with my felt-tip pen. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
Starting off with that lovely fur around his face... | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
This is just a zig-zaggy line. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
Then up, around his mouth section. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
Over the top of his nose. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
And for his nostrils, I'm just going to put two dark circles | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
with little lines coming out of the side. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
Up over his eyes and back down again. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
And now you can put in a nice dark pupil. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
And those mug handles are his ears. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
And then some darker circles inside for his ear holes. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:25
And we need some more ear detail. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
Now, to make your chimp really chimp-like | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
is all those wrinkles in his forehead and around his eyes. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
It'll give him lots of character and expression in his face. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
So there we have it, one cheeky chimp. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
'Good work, Jo. So lifelike! | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
'We went to Swindon on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
'Here's how you got on with the doodle in the Deadly Art tent.' | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
OK. Down there. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
ALL: Deadly! | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
This is my Deadly Doodle of a chimp. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
Deadly! | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
They showed us how to do the shapes and they made it shaggy | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
and they taught me how to do really good drawing. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
-Deadly! -'Some cheeky-looking chimps there. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
'Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.' | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
The resin's hard, all that's left to do is to peel back the mould. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
Wow! And there we have our first chimp head. Two more to go. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:41
That is amazing! Look how fierce it is. Argh! | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Now all that's left to do is to paint it a base coat of blue | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
to match the body of a chimp. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
'Mike's going to take a break now to show you a DIY | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
'if you're in the mood to monkey around.' | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
Ooo! Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah! | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
I'm going to show you how to do a Deadly DIY of a chimp mask. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
You need to start with your doodle from earlier. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
This DIY is all about cutting out the essential elements of your face. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
Cut out your ears, the face, the facial fur. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
And we've cut out the jaw separately | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
because this is the bit that moves up and down. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
Now all you have to do is trace them out. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
I've got a nice piece of dark-brown foam for that. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
Put your piece right in the centre, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
push down hard and trace it out. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
The more detail you put in there, the better. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
Makes your chimp look more realistic, a little bit more fun. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
All right, the tracing's done, now we just have to cut it out. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
Now, a nice tip here is to cut out the main shape first | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
and then go in and cut out all the details. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
OK, that's the facial fur all cut out. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
For the other parts of the face, | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
I've used a nice lighter tan so they contrast our facial fur. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
So I've got the ears, I've got the face with the nose cut out | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
and I've got the bottom jaw. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
Now we're going to work on the nose. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
You can see in my mask, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:01
the nose pops out a bit to give us room to breathe. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
So we've got our nosepiece, we want to fit it around our nose. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
So we're going to glue this down to another piece | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
of the same colour foam and we're going to add in some tabs. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Now, these tabs that I'm drawing | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
are so that our nosepiece fits back into our hole, | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
but pops out just a little bit. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
OK, we've got all four tabs drawn out. We just need to cut them out. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
Now we just need to glue that back into our face. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
So, a tiny bit of glue. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
Pop it in from the front. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
Bending these tabs around so the nose pops out a bit. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
And there you go. You've got room to breathe and you've got two nostrils. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:45
So now we can start gluing some of our pieces back together. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
Let's start with the ears. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
Glue those to our facial fur. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
And we'll glue our face to the back. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
Glue it on the face. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
Now we need to work on the bottom jaw. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
First thing we need to do is create a cup for the chin, like this. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
So using another piece of foam, we're going to glue along one edge, | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
just glue it into a U shape on the back of your jaw. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
Now we need to add two tabs to the side of our jaw. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
This is to help guide our mouth up and down. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
So, a little bit of glue. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
Now we need to add our jaw back to our face. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
You need a few pieces of sewing elastic, | 0:11:32 | 0:11:34
so you need to glue that from the tabs back to the face. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
Now we need to fit it to our head. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
So with a little bit more sewing elastic, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
you need a longer piece, one that fits from ear to ear. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
And you're going to glue that to the back of your ears on your mask. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
Put that there. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
Now we need to attach the chin bit to that piece of elastic. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
OK. Same again on the other side. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:16
This piece goes down the middle of your head. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
It helps your mask not to fall off. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
So one bit of glue to the top of your mask | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
and glue that back down to the piece of elastic going around your head. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
We're going to draw in some of the details, | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
like our doodle from earlier. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:31
Let's see how it fits. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
How's that for a Deadly DIY? Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ah! | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
'I could almost swear a chimp was in the room with us. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
'Back to the big art. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:43
'Mike and Jo look like they're working on the finishing touches. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:48
'That's it. Our chimpanzees are ready.' | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
Using that street-art graffiti style | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
has really given our chimps an edge. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
And the realistic moulds for faces, they look fierce and hungry. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
-Hungry and deadly. Let's get out of here. -Absolutely! | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
'I asked the Deadly Art team | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
'to recreate these killer shots and turn them into art.' | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
So, let's take a look at the finished work of art. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
'Wow! That is really striking! | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
'It would never have occurred to me | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
'to use blue paint for the chimps, but it definitely works. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
'I love that urban stencil design for the bodies. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
'The fact that the heads are 3D | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
'really brings out their intelligence and their emotions. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
'You really feel that they could be working together as a team. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
'And, of course, the jungle vines | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
'set them in a realistic environment, too. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
'Great stuff, team. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
'Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.' | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
What an incredible creation. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY | 0:13:49 | 0:13:51
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:54
