My name's Steve Blackshaw. THIS is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
We'll reveal another UNIQUE creation. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips , tricks and techniques | 0:00:24 | 0:00:29
so YOU can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
This is no ordinary art show. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
THIS is Deadly Art. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
'Coming up on Deadly Art, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
'I go sky high to get close | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
'to a deadly winged predator. He's right there! | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
'Our art team produce an outstanding work of art...' | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
These guys are going to look REALLY powerful. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
When it comes to winged hunters, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
it takes a lot to beat today's deadly animal. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
The Black Eagle. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
With a wingspan of up to two metres, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
which is longer than giraffe's neck | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
and longer than I am tall, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
this bird is absolutely massive. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Add to that set of huge talons, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
which are as sharp as any kitchen knife, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
and extraordinary eyesight, able to spot prey from miles away, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
this is an incredible predator. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
Time to meet today's art team. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
As ever, they're ready and waiting in the Deadly Art studio. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
I'm Michelle, and I just LOVE working with different materials. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
I'm Jo. I'm a painter, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
and a general mess maker. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
Michelle and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
And this is the killer moment for their Big Art. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
Most birds of prey are solitary for the vast majority of their lives, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
but Black Eagles will work together as a team. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
One distracts the prey, one creeps up on it from a different direction. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
Deadly teamwork. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
Beautiful feathers, but deadly talons. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
No painting THIS time! | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
We're going to three dimensional. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Time for some more Deadly Art. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Hey, Michelle! | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
That looks like great fun! | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
I fixed these brackets to the desks. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
These will act as an anchor for the armature of our birds. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
The armature is just a metal wire, to show the outline of the body. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
Once this is fixed down, we'll start building it up to make it more 3D. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
We'll leave Jo and Michelle making wire frames. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
'On Deadly 60, we visited South Africa. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
'There was something pretty deadly heading my way.' | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
Look at this. He's folding his wings. Stooping. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:52
Coming CRASHING into LAND! | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
WOW! | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56 | |
That was EXTRAORDINARY! | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Keep your face away. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
Obviously, this isn't a wild eagle. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
This is Rourke. He was rescued as a very young chick, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
and been living for the last five years in good human company. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
He is an utterly magnificent predator. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
To see why, you don't have to look further | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
than those talons. Look at those. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
Each one is like a long, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
curved kitchen knife of a weapon. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
Doug, his owner, has assured me | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
if I wasn't wearing this thick leather glove, | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
he could punch that talon through my hand, and out the other side. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
They are magnificent. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
'The eyes.' | 0:03:36 | 0:03:37
That talons, the beak, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
are all very much things that | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
any eagle has, and can use to hunt. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
Something unique about the Black Eagle | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
is the way that the male and female, the pair, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
will hunt together. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
'Quite a feat for our Big Art. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
'Back to Jo and Michelle.' | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
We've done our 2D outline, | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
and then we built it out to 3D, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
so, now we're going to fill in the gaps with chicken wire. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
As we're bulking these eagles out, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
it's important we get the dimensions JUST right. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
These guys are going to look REALLY powerful. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
Those eagles are bulking up nicely. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Fancy drawing your OWN Black Eagle? | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
Here's Michelle, with a Deadly Doodle. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
I'll show you how to draw and paint one of these Black Eagles. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
First of all, with a white wax pencil, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
draw a large circle at the top of your page, | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
for the eagles' head. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
Once you have your large circle, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
draw an eye in the centre. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
Inside that circle, you're going to do another series of circles. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
Coming off this eye, | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
I'm going to a semi-circle shape | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
at the very bottom of the eye, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
where the pupil is, | 0:04:56 | 0:04:57
I'm going to draw a vertical line down, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
and, like a pie shape coming out of the head. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
This will act as our deadly beak. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:04
Once you've drawn the beak, I've drawn another curvy line, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
all the way around, to make sure we get that sharp end. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
Then we're going to fill in | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
a few little details. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
I'll put some white feather markings | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
around the head. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
Once you have the head, | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
the rest is really simple. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:30
Follow the shape of the top of the head all the way along, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
and then do a nice, smooth circular line | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
right down to the bottom of your page. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
Once you get to the bottom, about a quarter of the way up, | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
I'm drawing a squashed C shape, | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
and then I'm going to draw a line down, and out. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
I'm going to draw another large C shape. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
As you can see, it really helps define the eagle's body. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
That's it with the white crayon. Next, I've got my yellow, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
around the outside of the circles you drew for the eyes, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
I'm going to colour it all in yellow. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
What I'm doing as I'm colouring in, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
is just leaving a few bits. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
You'll see why later on. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
Next, I'm going to colour in my beak in yellow. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
Once that's all coloured in, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
all that's left is to get your black ink, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
and simply wash all over the page. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
Painting the doodle REALLY brings it to life. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
As you wash over, the wax crayon will resist the ink, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
which means all those white lines, | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
and all the yellow, will pop out. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
It's a really cool effect. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
Be very careful with black ink. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
And get permission before you use it. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
There you have it. An AMAZING Black Eagle. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
Good work, Michelle. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Now, we went to Port Talbot, in Wales, on a deadly day out. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
Here's how some of YOU did, in the Deadly Art tent. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
ALL: This is my Deadly Doodle! | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
I liked drawing the eye, cos there's so many circle. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
And drawing the wings, as well. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
I liked drawing the belly. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
It looks like he's rumbling. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
I liked drawing the beak, cos he bites the animals. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
I liked drawing the head, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
cos he's very funky, and he's fat. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
I love eagles, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
and I really enjoyed drawing this. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
After I finished drawing it, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
I thought it looked absolutely deadly. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
-ALL: Deadly Art! -Great Black Eagles! | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
See how easy it is to draw your favourite deadly animal? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
Michelle's onto the wings. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
The Black Eagle has an AMAZING two metre wingspan. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
If THIS is just one of the wings, with two, our eagle will be huge. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
The Black Eagle has amazing black feathers, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
so we want to give our sculpture a unique texture. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
I've cut black bin bags into strips, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
and this is the good bit. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
I'm going to lay them over the wire mesh, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
and melt them to create a feather effect. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
Melting black bin bags is something only a professional artist can do. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
You mustn't attempt ANYTHING you see in the Big Art. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
In South Africa, being close to Black Eagle, Rourke, | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
was incredible. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
'Time to see him TRULY in action.' | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
There he is, right there! | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
Just flying under my feet! | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
We're sharing the air! | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
With Rourke, the Black Eagle. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
How good is THAT?! | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
He just soared right under our canopy! | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
That was UNBELIEVABLE! | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
Just incredible! | 0:08:46 | 0:08:47
OK, now the real trick | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
to this paragliding lark | 0:08:55 | 0:08:56
is very much the same thing | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
the eagle will be looking for, and that's thermals. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
A thermal is a rising current of warm air, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
which would especially come up off a dark, ploughed field, | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
a big area of road. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10
Just that warm air is enough to get you heading for the heavens. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
That's the weapon the Black Eagle uses to get high. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:19
'We're sharing the skies with a true master. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
'And Rourke is giving us a proper flying lesson. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
'Such a beautiful bird!' | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
After all that excitement, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
it's time for a DIY. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
I'm going to show you how to make this amazing Black Eagle. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
I've cut out the head, and down into this point. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
I'll put that to one side. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
The most interesting thing about THIS DIY, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
is the amazing wingspan. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
I create that by making a single feather out of a lino cut. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
This stuff's really nice, soft, and easy to cut into. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
You can get it in any art shop. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
We start off by drawing the feather on. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
I'm going to go from corner to corner with a line. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:02
And up, with those feathery marks, | 0:10:02 | 0:10:07
and down with the side. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
It's going to be feathering all the way up. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:15
Now, I'm taking a lino-cutting tool, | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
and cut along all those black lines. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
Make sure you try that technique with an adult to help you. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
So I'm cutting out all those feathery lines | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
and all the bits that are left over will be printed onto the page. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:33
It does take some time but it's worth it in the end. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
I think that's enough cutting. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
Now I'm just going to cut around those edges using scissors. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
Take care when you use scissors. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Just cutting around the stalk, that will give me | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
something to hold onto when I start printing. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
So I'm just going to nick into the edge to create that feathery texture. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:57
Great. Now I'm ready to start printing. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
I've got some grey card and some water-based ink. Pop that on there. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:08
Just roller it out, spreading it all over my tile evenly and thinly. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:15
We're going to take our feather and put a nice even coat of ink over it. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:21
I'll pick it up by its stalk and lay it out on my card. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:29
I've got a clean roller just to give it a bit of pressure on the back | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
and make sure I get a nice clean print. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
Wow, look at that. Printing's just like magic. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
So I'm building feather upon feather to make a section of the wing. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
Now I'm just going to cut it out. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
Doesn't that look beautiful? So this is just one section of the wing. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
I've done the same again for a middle section so I'm just going to | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
stick it all together with double-sided sticky tape. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
So there we've got the left wing. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
Here's the right wing | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
and the doodle from earlier, so we can piece it all together. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:25
And not forgetting the deadly claws which are just drawn onto yellow | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
pieces of paper and now we have an amazing pair of hunting black eagles. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:38
Nice DIY, Jo. Back to our big art. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
I love that they're using yellow plastic bags too. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
Well, the black eagles look just about finished to me. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
I love the technique of melting the plastic onto the wire | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
because of the amazing scraggy feathered effect. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
I love that they're larger than life and because we've got two | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
it looks like they're hunting right here in the art studio. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:12
So it's nearly time for the Big Reveal. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
and turn them into art, so let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:23
Oh, these two eagles just dominate the Deadly Art studio. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:28
Imagine having those plummeting out of the sky towards you. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
The wings are spread, the talons poised to pounce | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
and the flight feathers are perfectly represented | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
by those melted bin bags. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:39
I couldn't imagine how that would work but it really has. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
Great work, team. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
What an incredible creation. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
