..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:26
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
tricks and techniques so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art! | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
Coming up on Deadly Art... | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
I go diving in the remarkable reefs of Borneo, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
with today's deadly predator. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
How will our art team get on with today's killer moment artwork? | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
-Looks fantastic! -And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
Today's predator is feared by small fish and also sometimes by divers. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:03
Because of their gnashers, they can bite through their prey | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
in a single mouthful, and perhaps even savage a finger. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
This is the barracuda. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
They can travel at 43 kilometres an hour, which makes them | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
one of the fastest fish. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
They have fabulous eyesight and a speedy strike, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
which is essential when you're going after fast moving fish. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
But they're at their most sensational in a shoal, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
and that's what we're going to see today. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Over to the Deadly Art studio to meet today's team. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
I'm Nicola. I'm an ice sculptor, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
a sand sculptor, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
and a power tool queen. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
Hey, I'm Mike! I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art! | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
Nicola and Mike are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
who are up for a challenge, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
and here are some killer shots to inspire today's Big Art. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
Barracuda have two very different kinds of teeth. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Two long thin ones at the front to ensnare their prey, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
and needle sharp ones at the back to make sure it can't get away. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
Look at his shimmery, shiny skin. It's so beautiful. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
The barracuda is on Steve's Deadly 60. We mustn't forget the teeth. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:18
-We thought fabrics and dyes would be great for this one. -Yep. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
-So, shall we do it? -Let's do it! | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Time for some more Deadly Art! | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
Rather than painting on a canvas, we're going to use this chiffon. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
It's a very fine material, but the colours | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
are going to be far more vibrant because the fabric is so transparent. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
All you'll see is the colour, and because this is our Big Art, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
we're using three chiffon panels to create one massive killer moment. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
'We'll leave Nicola and Mike sketching out their barracudas. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
'Now, on Deadly 60, my team and I | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
'were on the lookout | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
'for deadly oceanic animals in Borneo. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
'I couldn't believe the size | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
'of this incredible barracuda shoal.' | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
This is absolutely dazzling! | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
One of the meanest, fastest, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
fiercest fish in the sea! | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
And I've never seen so many of them. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
Ho-ho-ho! | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
That is unbelievable! | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
Absolutely surrounded by them! | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
I've never seen anything like it! | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
They're surrounding me in a circle! | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
Spinning around and around. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
This is absolutely dazzling! | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
'To see so many barracuda at once | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
was a once in a lifetime experience, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
'if unnerving. All those sharp teeth! | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
Time to see some brilliance in our art studio. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
Mike and Nicola are waxing and colouring. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
I'm using wax to create a barrier around the outline of the barracuda. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
This will stop the dye from bleeding over the edges, and later, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:31
when we remove the wax, we'll have a lovely crisp, white outline. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
Don't try any of our Big Art techniques at home. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
This is the tail. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
Within this wax barrier, I'm blending two shades of dye | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
to create some nice, shimmery definition. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
As you can see, when I go along the edge, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
the colour doesn't bleed into the painting. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
'Using wax in art is just great! | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
'I think the colours are going to be outstanding. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Nicola's going to take a break. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
She's going to show you another Deadly Doodle. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
I'm going to show you how to draw this deadly barracuda. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
We'll start off with some simple lines and shapes as a guide. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:11
Draw a big curve all the way around your page. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:16
Double up to create a horn shape. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
Then split that in two, tapering off at this end. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
Make a V for the jaw, a circle for his eye, and give him some fins. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:31
A big one up here, one in the centre, one down here... | 0:05:31 | 0:05:37
..two here, and then his tail is a backward C shape, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
and turn that into a moustache. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
Now we're ready to go in with our marker pen. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:51
We'll start with the eye. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:52
Make a dark shadow over the top of the eye, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
to make him look extra menacing. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
Draw in the eye. Give him a pupil, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
some character lines, and then raise his eyebrow. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:10
Then redefine the entire body with a big strong line all the way around. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
Give him two gills. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
And draw in those fins. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
At this stage, add in some extra shading for definition. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
Redefine that tail. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
And because the barracuda has that beautiful, shimmery skin, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
you can add in some reflection lines here and there, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
including that centre line all the way down the middle. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
Now we're onto his jaw. This is really important, | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
cos it has to look extra strong. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
I'm going to make an elongated S-shape, | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
and then strengthen up the bottom part. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
Double up on the top part of his jaw, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
with some shadow for the inside of his mouth. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
And the barracuda has two fearsome teeth | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
right at the end of his bottom jaw. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
Fill those in. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
Then continue all the way up into his mouth, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
and the same on the top. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
And there you have your deadly barracuda Doodle. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
Loving that barracuda! Let's see how some of you got on when you visited | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
the Deadly Art tent, on the Deadly Day Out in Glasgow. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
Are we ready? ALL: Yes! | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
Draw the front part of the circle, so all the way around like that. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
Fill in this line, all the way through, | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
skipping out your fin. And taper it off to the end. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
ALL: Deadly! | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
ALL: Here's our Deadly Doodles! | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
I've done a doodle of a barracuda fish! | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
First we started with basic lines and then we added in the detail. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:57
This is my Deadly Doodle! I've drawn a barracuda, | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
and I'm very pleased with it. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
My favourite bits were the mouth there and that fin there! | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
Great barracudas! And it proves that all of you can Doodle too! | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
Now, let's get back to the Deadly Art studio and our Big Art. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
At the bottom of our ocean here, we have our coral reef. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
As we all know, coral reefs come in amazing colours. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
We've got some gorgeous greens and blues, | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
and here we've got our vibrant reds and oranges. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
It looks amazing already, but we can add a little bit of magic, | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
-which is simply some rock salt. -'What?!' | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
Do a little sprinkle over our coral bed, | 0:08:31 | 0:08:36
and as it dries, it absorbs all those colours. Now on this canvas... | 0:08:36 | 0:08:42
my rock salt's been drying already. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
And if I scrape away, it'll reveal some amazing textures. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:50
Looks fantastic! | 0:08:51 | 0:08:52
The coral looks sensational! Now, Mike's got a superb Deadly DIY. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
I will most definitely be making this one myself. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
This has got to be one of the coolest | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
DIY makes we've ever had! | 0:09:03 | 0:09:04
It's a barracuda hat, and look! It's biting my head. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
And, it's easy to make. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
All you need is a piece of craft foam. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
You can get this from any craft store. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
We're going to start by drawing out a stocking shape. A big curve... | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
..and another big curve... | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
..and on the top, we're going to add a triangle for the top of his mouth. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:34
Now, we just have to cut it out. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
'Be careful when you use scissors.' | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
That's your first piece cut out. Now, you've got half your fish. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
So you're going to need two of those to glue together, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
This is where you need to add some fins. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
As you can see, we've got some side fins here, | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
we've got a dorsal fin up here and we've got a tail fin. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
We've got those pieces cut out. We've also got the eyelid, | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
which is another triangle. We've also got a polystyrene ball. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
You can get these from any craft store. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
These are going to be our eyes. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
When you glue those pieces together, you can move on to your next stage. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
So you can see, you've glued the upper lip on, | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
you've glued the eyelid, the eye, two fins, and you've also made sure | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
not to glue the mouth, cos we want that to open really wide like that. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:25
So now we're going to add in a few extra fins. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
The tail fin, which is like a giant blue moustache. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
We need to glue our tail fin in between our two pieces of foam. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
'You can use craft glue, but it takes a little longer to dry.' | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
Now we're gluing the side fins. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Make sure they're even on both sides. Now, dorsal fin. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
Once that's dried, put that to the side. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
Now we can work on the bottom jaw. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
That's this shape right here. It looks like a tiny little fish. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
We've got one on each side. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
To get two of them, get a missing eye shape. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
It's like a long rugby ball. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:01
So, we've got one of those right here. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:05
When you fit all three of those pieces together and glue it, | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
you get a fish-shaped boat. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:10
So just fit that... | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
..over our fish. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:14
And glue it so that his mouth is really wide open. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
And you can see our barracuda is really taking shape. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
He's looking awesome! | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
Next thing we want to do is add some character. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
So, we're going to draw in some pupils. Two C-shapes. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
Makes him look really angry. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
Colour that in. Same again on the other side. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
All right, he's looking great! | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
For that barracuda smile, we need to add in those deadly teeth! | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
So, for that... | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
..I've got a big pile of foam teeth. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
With a little bit of glue, just start sticking them all on. | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
It's like barracuda dentistry. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
And there you have your deadly barracuda hat! A-a-a-a-agh! | 0:12:08 | 0:12:13
I'm not sure they'd attack humans, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
but an amazing DIY to impress your friends. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
Back to our chiffon barracuda artwork, | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
and Nicola's painting the shoal. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
We saw Steve earlier with that incredible shoal of barracuda, | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
so that must feature in our painting. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
Same as before, wax outline and fill in the shape. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
Don't even attempt this at home. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
The heat from this iron lifts the wax onto this piece of paper, | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
revealing a lovely white line on our chiffon. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
Mike has been trained to create today's artwork. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
Look at that. It's fantastic. Nearly done. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
Now all I have to do is put it back on the frame. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
-The barracuda art looks just about finished to me! -Wow! | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
You know what I love? We've captured these two deadly barracudas | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
in the foreground. | 0:12:58 | 0:12:59
But we haven't forgotten about that shoal in the background. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
With all these elements combined, it makes a beautiful composition. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:07
Love it! | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
It's nearly time for the Big Reveal. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
Let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
I didn't believe that a piece of art could sum up that experience, | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
but this really has. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
The two huge barracuda just seem to be hovering over the coral, | 0:13:24 | 0:13:29
and up there in the distance, silhouetted against the sun, | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
is that glorious circling vortex of barracuda. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
The different streaks of blue look perfect for the sea. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
And all those running colours make this a perfect wild watery world. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:43
Art doesn't get deadlier than this! | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
What an incredible creation! | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
Make sure you try the Doodle and DIY, | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art! | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
