My name's Steve Backshall. This is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Along the way, you'll get to pick up tips, tricks and techniques | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
Coming up on Deadly Art... | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
I'm hanging out with a colony of predators. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
I think...I'm about to go. Argh! | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Steve in a cave, eye-to-eye with a bat. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
That is what Deadly Art is all about. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
Imagine two-million winged, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
deadly animals coming towards you in a flying storm cloud. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Meet the wrinkle-lipped bat and their colony of thousands. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:15
There are many species of bats found around the world. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
But the thing that makes this species so incredible | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
is the sight of them leaving their roost to hunt en masse. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
Between them, these bats could eat up to 30,000 kilograms | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
of insects in just one night of foraging. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
That's the equivalent weight of five fully-grown elephants. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
Time to meet our art team ready for today's Deadly Art challenge. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:39
I'm Michelle. I just love working with different materials. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
I'm all about getting stuck in. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
I'm Nicola, and I'm the power-tool queen. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
They are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
And here are today's killer shots to inspire the artwork. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
Bats are the only mammal that can truly fly | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
and they are extraordinarily agile when they're on the wing. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
This enables them to catch flying insects in mid air. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
When they're en masse, they're one of the most impressive sights. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
And in just a moment, you'll see me dangling with them. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
And that's part of today's killer moment, too. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
The wrinkle-lipped bat is so unusual. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
There's something about bats hanging in a cave that is really creepy. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
Make sure we incorporate that feeling into the artwork. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
Steve was hanging in there with them. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
-If we include him, that'll make for a really cool image. -Let's do it. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Time for some more Deadly Art. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
We're going to create a massive picture | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
using spray paint and stencils. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
We'll have Steve hanging in the cave with bats flying all around him. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
We've created a photo montage of Steve hanging with the bats | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
and I'm just tracing over it with this acetate, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
picking out all these essential elements. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
-This will be the foundation for our massive artwork. -Cheers, Nicola. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
With Nicola's tracing projected on here, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
we can start drawing around the picture and create our stencils. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
-There you go. -Cheers. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
I can't wait to see the colony of bats represented in a piece of art. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
And this is that very moment | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
where I descended deep into Gomantong Cave in Borneo. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
When they're not flying, bats generally rest high up | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
and hanging down. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
When they want to fly again, they let go and accelerate quickly, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
allowing them to get into their flying position easily. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Now, I'm a mammal, just like a bat. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
So let's see how long I can hang on for. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
I can't quite believe I'm doing this! | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Right, OK. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
So I'm hanging on using muscle power. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Beneath me at the moment, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
well, it's about 90 metres down to the floor of the cave, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:08
which is a long way. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
I've been hanging on for...not long. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
Probably...15-20 seconds. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
And already...the steel wire's cutting into my fingers. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
Bit frightened about quite how far down it is at the moment. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
Argh! | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28 | |
Now, bats can do this for a very, very long time. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
They don't use their muscles like I'm dong. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
Instead, they switch on their talons or their claws. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
Bats' ligaments and muscles work differently to ours. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
If you relax your hand, it will fall open. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
When a bat relaxes its claws, it does the opposite and clenches up. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
So even when asleep, they're in no danger of letting go. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
And they can hang on for hours. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
Whilst me, on the other hand... | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
I think I'm about to go. Argh! | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
Whoa! | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07 | |
Whoo! | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10 | |
That is a very long way down. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
Imagine being able to hang upside down for hours on end. Incredible! | 0:05:15 | 0:05:20
How are Nicola and Michelle getting on with their big bat art? | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
We've got our tracing drawn out on a massive scale. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
And now it's time to work on the stencils. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
I've got the bat's head. You might notice Steve's face is missing. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
And that's because I've got Steve right here. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
It's stuck to a piece of card so it's nice and sturdy | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
for when we spray-paint it later. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
First, it's all about cutting out the shapes. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
Don't try any of the techniques you see in our big art. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:48
But for now, it's Doodle time with Nicola. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
This is the Deadly Doodle of the wrinkle-lipped bat. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:57
We'll start with his head. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:58
On an angle, draw an oval shape | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
with a slightly smaller one inside. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Two leaf shapes for the ears | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
and a heart shape for the nose. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
And two smaller circles for the eyes. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
Its body is an upside-down house shape. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
Two straight lines with a point reconnecting to the body. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
His feet are two U shapes right down there at the bottom. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:31
And now we're onto the wings. Draw two lines | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
coming out of the top of his head | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
with a small circle on the outside of each one. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Now we need an arch over the top for his wing. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
Using four rigid lines, | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
create that arch on both sides. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
Add three arches from the end of the wing. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
One, two, three. Same on both sides. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
And then we just need some guidelines for those fingers. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
We join this point to this circle with some rigid lines. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:03
And this top one just disappears off into the wing. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
We're ready for the marker pen. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:11
Redefine those lines on both sides | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
and then draw a line down the centre | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
with some texture on the inside of his ear. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
An arch across the top of his head, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
then complete the rest of his head from the bottom of the ear | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
all the way around to the bottom of the other ear. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
At the bottom of his face, add on an elongated U shape for his chin | 0:07:29 | 0:07:34
with a few little hairs. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
Above that chin, you need to raise the line slightly | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
and come back down again to create his lip. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
I'll add a thicker line there to show off the inside. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
And then most importantly, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
a wiggly line all the way over the top of his lip, | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
and then on to the nose. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
First, fill in the top, the bridge of his nose, | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
and then the underneath and then give him two nostrils. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:01
Now we're onto the eyes. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:02
Go around those circles until you get a small circle in the centre. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
Fill in the top of the head and the bottom of the wing. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
Take that head all the way round, underneath the chin. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
And the second part of his body is just redefining those lines, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
but being a little bit more organic. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
For his feet, draw the sides in first of all | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
and then four quick lines up through the centre to create his toes. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:30
Just need to do the wings. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
Follow these lines all the way up and around that circle. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
Back down until you meet the ear again. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
Then, on to the rest of his wing, | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
fill in the lines you've already done, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
and then very carefully, | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
double up on them to create those spindly fingers. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
Almost done. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
All we need to do now is fill in those arches to complete the wing. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
And there he is. Rub out the lines and he's finished. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
There we go. Your very deadly wrinkle-lipped bat. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:15
That bat looks so realistic. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
Here's how some of you got on with this doodle | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
when the Deadly artists went to Glasgow on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
ALL: Deadly! | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
-I'm Brian. -I'm Jack. -BOTH: And this is our Deadly Doodle. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
I'm pleased with my Doodle. It's quite good and it was a challenge. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:36
My name is Jamie and this is my Deadly Doodle. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
My favourite bits are the wings. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
They've got a lot of detail on. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
I never would have been able to draw them. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
Your bats were cool. Keep practising your doodles. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio and our big art. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
All our stencils are cut out, and this is the fun bit. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
It's time to start spray-painting. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
Michelle and Nicola are professionals | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
and are wearing protective masks when they use their spray paints. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
-Looks great! -I'm looking forward to seeing the big art bat colony. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
But first, it's time for Michelle with a Deadly DIY. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
I'm going to show you how to create | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
this beautiful piece of bat artwork using stencils. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
I'm starting off with a large piece of blue card | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
which will act as the sky. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:22
To set the scene a bit more, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:23
I've cut out a large circle from some white paper | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
and I'm going to stick this on for the moon. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
To give it a bit more depth and texture, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
I'm going to use some dark paint. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
Just put a bit on here. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
And with a sponge, I'm going to dab on it like this. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:41
This really helps to make it look a bit more realistic. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
OK, that's the moon sorted, now on to the bat stencil. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
This is really simple to make. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
I've got a piece of card here and on it, with my pen, | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
I'm just drawing a large M shape. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
And at the bottom of the M shape, | 0:10:57 | 0:10:58
I'm just joining it all up with some curvy lines. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
So now, with a scalpel, I'm just cutting around it. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
I'm following the lines I've drawn with my scalpel. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
Now, scalpels are very dangerous, | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
so make sure you get an adult to help you. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Very carefully going around, just scoring along that final line. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:19
And then the inside will pop out really easily. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
There you have your bat stencil. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
Now, I want my bats to be flying across the moon, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
then sweeping around as if they're coming towards me. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
So for that effect, you need three different-sized stencils. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
We've got a small one for the bats that are the furthest away, | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
and then a medium-sized one as the colony of bats gets closer, | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
and then you end up with your large one when they're in front of you. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:46
I'm going to start with the small bats. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
As you can see, we've got four of them. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
And it just makes it quicker as you're going along. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
Michelle is using blue paint for her small bats, | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
brown paint for the medium-sized bats | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
and a darker brown for the large ones. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
Great. And for the final bat, I've grabbed Nicola's doodle from earlier. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:05
It's been coloured in and now I'm going to stick it right at the front. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:10
And there you have an amazing Deadly bat DIY. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
That's totally brilliant! Give it a go. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
Back to our bonkers bat cave artwork. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
It looks like they've reached the finish line. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
Because we used stencils, we've got a sharp, bold, graphic image. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:32
And it really works. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:33
And we've got Steve in a cave, eye-to-eye with a bat. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
That is what Deadly Art is all about. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
Let's stop hanging around and get ready for the big reveal. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
and turn them into art. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
So let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
Oh, the air is thick with bats! | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
I love the different-coloured silhouettes. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
And you can see the strain as I hang there in the darkness. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:04
And my toes dangling tantalisingly over eternal darkness. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:10
Terrifying! | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
Those stencils sum up how the bats pour out of that cave. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
They just seem to go on for ever. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
That one big bat with its burning red eye | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
and those huge fangs looks terrifying! | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
Art doesn't get any deadlier than this. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
That was a truly sublime work of art. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
