My name's Steve Backshall, and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks, and techniques, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
Coming up on Deadly Art, I'm on the search | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
for one of the most famous deadly felines in the world. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
Lions are Africa's most impressive, most fearsome carnivore. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:54
My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
-We got those finer details. -And you can make your own art at home, too. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
Today's deadly animal is possibly the fiercest feline on earth. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
It's impossible not to have the utmost admiration | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
and respect for this legend of legends. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
The lion. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
LION ROARS | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
Its super-loud roar can be heard up to eight kilometres away. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:23
That's like me shouting here | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
and being heard 76 football pitches away. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
The males have that incredibly dramatic mane. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
They both have strong jaws and retractable super-sharp claws. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:36
And this is the only member of the cat family | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
that works together as a group to take down its prey. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
Over to another team who work well together - it's my deadly artists. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:49
Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
I'm Nicola, and I'm the power tool queen. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
Mike and Nicola will be representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
This is the killer moment for our artists to capture. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
While the lionesses do the majority of the hunting, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
the male protects his family. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
And when you see a male lion in full flow running at top speed, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
it's incredibly impressive. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Look at that! So, Mike and Nicola, over to you. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
-We've got to get across the speed of the lion. -And the colours. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Blue sky and yellow fur, and the face - so noble and majestic. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
-I love it. -Let's go! | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Time for some more Deadly Art. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
Nicola's got the pallet sorted, and Mike's starting on the canvas. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
When the Deadly 60 team and I visited Namibia, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
after hours of searching in the bush, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
we came across an incredible pride of lionesses. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Look at that! | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
Ooh, that's some purpose. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Looks like they've spotted something. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
There's a couple of warthog off to our left, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
and...our lions have spotted them. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
This is the perfect time for things to start happening. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
The warthog are getting closer, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
they don't realise what they're doing. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
This one here is moving forward with purpose. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
It's going to happen right now. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
One down. Over the back there. No, it's got away! He got away! | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
All the warthog scattered in different directions, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
and one over there, unfortunately, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
has just met its end in the thicket over there. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
The others all escaped. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
That would have to be one of the quickest, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
most completely perfect hunts I've ever seen. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
And that's why the lion has such an incredible reputation. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
So how are Mike and Nicola getting on in the Deadly Art studio? | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
This is about movement, | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
so I've thinned out the oil paints with turpentine, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
which will enable it to move loosely and freely across the canvas. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
-It's potent stuff so don't try it at home. Let's get pouring! -OK. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
Now this looks fun! | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
Art should be messy, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
but don't try any of the techniques you see in our Big Art. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
Mike and Nicola have to tilt the canvas | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
to get the paint to run in the right direction. Now it's your turn. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
Over to Mike for today's Deadly Doodle. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
I'll show you how to do this Deadly Doodle of a lion. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
As always, we start with simple shapes. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
Today's simple shape is the heart. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
We all love lions, so we're going to start with a heart | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
in the middle of our paper for the nose. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
Draw an upside down heart for the mouth, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
and another heart on the top of that for the area around the eyes. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
You can draw a rectangle underneath that for the bottom of his mouth. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:18
Add in two C shapes for his ears. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
We're going to draw two curves on the side to mark out where his mane goes. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:28
Also add in two lines to mark out where the eyes go. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
OK. That's the pencil sketch done, let's add in some details. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
Let's start with the eyes. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
Go back over that line, and then start adding in your pupils, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:43
which are just three Cs getting smaller and smaller. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
We'll colour in this bit and do the same again on the other side. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
Let's add in the nose. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
When you go back over that heart, just add in some furry textures, | 0:05:54 | 0:06:00
wrapping it around to his mouth. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
Now work up to the nose. Go back over that heart. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
This time, we're going to add in some nostrils. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
Draw in that huge nose there. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
Then add in some whiskers there. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
Three lines here, three lines on the other side, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
then do big, long lines for those big whiskers. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
Now we're going to go back over the ears, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
add in a bit of fur this time. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
Now work on the bottom jaw. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
Go back over that, but this time give him a little bit of a furry chin. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
Draw in two little teeth at the bottom, two big teeth at the top. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:46
So for the mane, we're going to go back over our guidelines, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
but this time do a big curving line like this, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
kind of like a zigzag lightning bolt. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
All round the bottom. The same on the other side, a big lightning bolt. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:05
Give him a little puff of hair at the top. The last little touch... | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
Make his eyes look really menacing by adding in a dark line. Like that. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:16
Right, there you have it! How's that for a deadly lion? | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
That lion looks ferocious! We visited Devon on a Deadly Day Out, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:26
and here's how some of you got on with this doodle | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
in the Deadly Art tent. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
CHEERING | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
This is my Deadly Doodle. Rarrr! | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
I love the eyes, they look cool. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
I'm Leanne and this is my Deadly Doodle. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
It's just basic shapes. It was explained well. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
My name's Erin and this is my Deadly Doodle. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
-BOTH: -This is our Deadly Doodle. Grrr! | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
The teeth are the deadliest bit, I really enjoyed it. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
Seriously impressive! Remember to keep on doodling. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio and our lion canvas. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
We've created energy in the painting | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
by throwing paint over the canvas to get a feeling of movement. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
In the killer moment, the lion's mane is moving in the breeze. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:13
That's why my paint is dribbling in this direction. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
Wouldn't mind giving that a go myself! | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
Now you can get involved. It's DIY time. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
I'll show you how to make this really cool lion backpack accessory. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:31
We'll start by making the pom-pom. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
We'll begin by drawing a leaf shape on a piece of card. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
A small circle in the centre. Then cut it out. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
To cut out the circle in the centre, | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
make a slit from the top all the way in, and cut it out. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:54
When we put wool onto this template, to avoid it slipping up to the top, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:59
I'm going to add some little ridges in here to grip hold of. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
You'll need two of these, | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
so use the first one as a template to make an exact replica. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
Piece them together, grab some wool. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
And just start wrapping it around. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
Keep on winding the wool around until you can't fit any more on. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:18
Take some scissors, | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
and put your scissors in between two pieces of card like that. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:25
Then simply snip all the way around the edge. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
Just mind your fingers. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
As you cut, you'll see the wool pop away. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
It's starting to look like a lion's mane already. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
Before we remove the template, we're going to tie it off in the middle. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
Take a piece of wool and wrap it between the two pieces of card. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:48
When you reach the top, tie it up right to the centre, really tight. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:54
Now we're ready to remove the cardboard, very carefully. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
But look at this! Already, we can see our lion's mane coming to life. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:05
And now we're ready to make his face. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
We need a small piece of foam, and I've drawn some shapes on one side. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
These will make up his face and his ears. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
I'm going to start with this shape, which is an M shape. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:20
I've cut it out, and also this piece here, | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
which is an angular square with a tab on the top. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:29
It's like an upside-down cupcake! | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
These two pieces are going to form this section of his head. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:37
Dab some glue on the tab, and then stick that down onto the centre. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:43
Then we need another dollop of glue along here and here, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
then fold these under and wrap that around. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:52
You can already see this is starting to form this part of his face. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:57
And now we'll work on this part of the jaw. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
I've cut that out and added two slits. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
Put a dollop of glue on each corner, | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
then wrap it under and stick it down. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
The top half of his face needs teeth, | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
just to make him extra deadly. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
I've cut two small triangles of white foam | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
and I'm just going to fix them under his lip. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
Now all he needs are some eyes. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
Take a small polystyrene ball, cut it in half, and colour it yellow. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:31
Then glue these to the top of his head. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
You see? Looking great already. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
And now you need some eyelids, which are two small semi-circles. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:43
You simply put on a bit of glue and stick them down, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
wrapping each one over the top of his eye. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
Now for the detail. Take a marker pen, and colour in his nose. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
I'm going to draw on an M shape and colour it in. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
And, of course, some pupils on those menacing eyes. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
Take your pom-pom, the lion's mane, | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
and we're ready to start sticking his face in. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
So peel back some of the wool and put him into position. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
Then attach the lower jaw.... | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
..an ear either side, and then a keychain. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
And there he is! | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
Doesn't he look awesome? I think mine needs a bit of a haircut. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
That'll look cool on your backpack. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
Right, back to our lion painting, and it's looking good. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
Now I'm adding a further level of detail to features on the face, | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
starting with the nose. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
I'm working on those amazing large eyes. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
That's it, job done. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
After we worked into it, layer after layer, | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
we really got those finer details. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
And now we have a beautiful, vibrant, dynamic painting. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
-A perfect portrait of the lion. -Yep, I love this guy. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
Earlier, I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment, | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
and turn it into art. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
So, let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
Wow! This would have to be one of my very favourite pieces of Deadly Art. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:24
The way the lion's mane is flowing in the wind, | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
it really gives an impression of speed and power. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
You can almost sense this animal powering its way through grasses. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:35
The lion has such a grand, regal, majestic face. It is beautiful. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:40
That was a truly sublime work of art. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:48
