My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks, and techniques, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
This is no ordinary art show. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
This is Deadly Art! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Coming up on Deadly Art... | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
I'm seriously creeped out by today's deadly predator. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
HE YELLS AND LAUGHS | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
If a centipede this small gives Steve the creeps, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
he's not going to like our giant one! | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
And you can get creative, too. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Art doesn't get any deadlier than this. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
Today's creature is guaranteed to give both you and I the creeps. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
The spine-chilling Scutigera centipede. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
You might have seen a relative in your garden. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
Of course, those are relatively harmless, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
unless you are a very small insect. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
But that's not the case with the Scutigera. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
They can get to be up to 20 centimetres long. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
And they have a highly venomous bite. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
They scuttle around hunting their prey | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
on 15 pairs of long, spindly legs, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
and their snack of choice? | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
Beetles, spiders, wasps, cockroaches, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
even, occasionally, a television presenter. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
Oh, it's crawling over my arm! | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
HE SHUDDERS | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
Still watching? Well, let's see if our artists are quite as brave. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
Time to meet them in the Deadly Art studio. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
I'm Michelle, and I just love working with different materials. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
I'm all about getting stuck in. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
I'm Jo, I'm a painter, a sculptor, and a general mess maker. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:06
Michelle and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
And here are the killer shots to inspire their artwork. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
Just look at those long, spindly, creepy-crawly legs. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
Really, it's as simple as that. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Urgh. Even the word "centipede" makes me cringe. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
It's the way they scuttle along that makes them so frightening. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
We need long legs, shell-like body. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
This is going to be a sculpture | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
-even Steve Backshall will be scared of. -Bring it on! | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
Me? Scared? Never! | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
Time for some more Deadly Art. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
It looks like it's going to be a sculpture made from wood, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
lots of metal joints, and a load of copper pipes. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
I bet they're going to be its legs. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
We want our centipede to look hard and armoured | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
so we're using metal for our sculpture. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
We've copper piping for the legs, but these guys don't just have one pair, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
they have 15 sets of them. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
That's why we're cutting these down to size. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
I can't think of anything more suitable to use. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
This Scutigera artwork is going to be massively creepy. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
On Deadly 60, I found myself in one of the creepiest places on earth. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
Teeming with millions of cockroaches that provide a tasty snack | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
for the ultimate, deadly, creepy-crawly predator. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
This is the Scutigera, the long legged centipede, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
I think there's another on the other side of the rock. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
I'm being very careful about how I handle this. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
It is quite venomous. One of the guys who was living in the area here | 0:03:32 | 0:03:37
was bitten by one of these not long ago, and spent a week in hospital. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
So, I'm taking a lot of care not to get bitten. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
Oh, it's run over my arm! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
HE SHUDDERS | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
Join me later for more centipede action, if you dare. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
But, how are our art team getting on with the creepiest of crawlies? | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
We've cut out our pipes and are using plumbing joints to construct legs. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
As you can see, they're really bendy, and insect-like. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
They're actually quite creepy. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
We're not just using spanners, are we, Jo? | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
No, because this is Deadly Art, we've got to use a blowtorch. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
And Jo's sections need to be joined together with intense heat. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
This is Deadly Art at its most extreme. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
Our artists are trained professionals. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Don't attempt to do anything you see in our Big Art. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
The centipede is definitely coming together, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
so Michelle has plenty of time to show you a doodle. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
I'm going to show you how to draw this amazing Scutigera centipede. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:32
So, for the head, I'm going to draw a squashed circle shape. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
Then for the body, I'm going to draw a large sausage shape from the head. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
The centipede's body is divided into seven sections. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
So I'm going to draw lines going across the body to split it evenly. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54
We have 15 pairs of legs on the Scutigera, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
So on one side, I'm going to draw 15 circles | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
which we'll draw the legs from afterwards. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
Now, I need to draw the legs coming down from each one of these circles. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
A good tip is that when you get to the middle of the body, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
make the legs slightly longer. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
So, you've got your 15 pairs of legs on one side, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
now you need to repeat it on the other side. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
Another 15 legs. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
Once you've got all of your legs drawn in, focus on the face. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
I'm going to draw two large, black eyes. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
Then they have the long antennae coming off them. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
So I'm just going to do a nice wavy line. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
Now, I am going to finish off the centipede's face. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
Once you've got your basic shape, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
grab yourself a black pen and fill in the details, | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
the black marker will really help to bring it to life. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
So you're just going over all those original pencil lines. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
You'll see the pencil marks really help as a guideline as you go around. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
You'll notice as I go around the body, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
I'm just doing curvier lines, | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
just to help show the contours of the centipede's body. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
I'm going to colour in those big, black eyes. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:22
So now I'm going to focus on the legs. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
Draw over the pencil marks that you originally did, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
and then come back upon yourself so you make a double line. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
Of course, you have to do this 30 times. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
This requires dedication. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
And there you have your Deadly Scutigera centipede. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
That centipede looks great. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
Here's how some of you got on with this when we visited Port Talbot, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
in Wales, on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
ALL: Deadly Art! | 0:06:50 | 0:06:51
I enjoyed drawing the head because the eyes were fun to draw. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
I liked drawing fangs as I didn't think centipedes would have fangs. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
I enjoyed drawing the antennae | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
because they were really long and easy to draw. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
I enjoyed drawing the body because it was like a sausage. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
That is full-on impressive. Remember to keep on doodling. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
Right, let's get back to the Deadly Art studio | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
and our creepy centipede creation. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
All the legs have been bolted and soldered together, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
so now I'm just fixing them into this wooden support. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
That wooden structure forms the basis of our centipede's body, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
but we wanted to create those armoured segments. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
For that, we're using these rusty pieces of metal. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
Bending them into shape for the contours of his body. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
They didn't always look like this, | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
they were nice and shiny, and I'll show you how we did it. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
So we took a normal piece of metal... | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
covered it in vinegar. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
Vinegar?! | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
-The whole lot covered in salt. -Salt? It's not a chip shop, Jo! | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
After a while, it looks like that. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
That rusting effect works a treat, | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
but don't try this at home, you'll get in big trouble. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
So it's time to see a bit more from my encounter with the Scutigera. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
And, over in Borneo, my team and I got a little too close | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
to this giant venomous centipede for my liking. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
It sounds obvious, but one of the main challenges | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
of living in a cave is the dark. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
The fact you can't actually see anything. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
This Scutigera manages to be an incredible hunter | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
by using its long legs. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
You can see, as it moves, it'll just stop and tap some of those legs | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
over the rock's surface. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
What it's doing is using each and every one of those feet | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
to feel everything about the surface it's moving on. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
Building up a mental picture of its environment | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
and if there's anything there that it might be able to eat. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
It makes my skin crawl! | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
Now, over to Jo for a Deadly DIY. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
Here's how to make a Super Deadly Scutigera centipede. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
I've taken the doodle from earlier and put it onto some foam board. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:03
The next step is to take some clingfilm and cover it up. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
Pull it nice and tight, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:11
you don't want any wrinkles on the front of it. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
Turn it over, and if you fold it on top of each other, it just sticks. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:19
Now for the fun bit. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
I've got sand and PVA glue, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
and I'm going to mix them, 50-50. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
That's half and half. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
In with the PVA, first. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
And then scoop in some sand. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
Give it a really good mix. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
I love the messy DIYs. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
It takes a bit of mixing. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
OK, when it's all together, I'm taking a sandwich bag, | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
and I'm going to scoop it all in. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
OK, then we're going to squidge it all down to the bottom. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:03
Squish it all down and then take some scissors | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
to make a small nick near the corner. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
You can see the sand oozing out. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
This is just like icing the cake. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
I'm going to ice over every single line, every leg, and the whole body. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:21
Oh, yeah. Look at that. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Amazing. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:30
So when the sand is done, take a polystyrene ball, | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
cut it in half, and pop it where the eyes would go. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
Now, this takes about a day to dry, so you have to be patient, | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
but I promise you, it's going to be worth it. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
We'll pop that over there, and take this, | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
which has already had a chance to dry, nice and hard. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
I'll now give it some colour. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
I'm just going to take some water-based paints. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
I have got a brown, and some red. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
I can mix a nice browny-red. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
You can try lots of different colours and really make it your own. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
OK, let's start getting some colour on that body. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
Now, I'm going to go with some black, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
this will pick out the sections in the centipede's body. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
Going over each section, | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
taking a lead from where his legs are. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
He's got markings going down his legs, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
so I'm just going to take my brush across the whole lot of them. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
It doesn't matter if it goes on the Clingfilm, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
because we'll chuck that away in a minute. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
Another marking further down his leg in black. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
I'm also going to do his eyes really dark black. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:43
Now, to give him a bit of yellow, to pick out the highlights on his body. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
Again, I can just sweep it across all of those legs at once. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
I love that noise it makes as it scrapes along those legs. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
That's the painting done, now we just have to peel it off. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
It does come away quite easily, but you have to be careful, | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
you don't want to break any of those legs. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
I'm being really careful not to pull too hard on those legs. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:15
There we have it, let's put him with his little friend on a rock. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
Two Super Deadly sandy Scutigera centipedes. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:27
That's totally brilliant. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
Right, back to our huge metal Scutigera. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
It's all fitting together nicely. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
It looks like they've finished. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
The metal sheets really help | 0:12:42 | 0:12:43
to give our sculpture that insect-like armoured body. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
We've only used two materials, so simple but so effective. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:50
Well, if Steve is scared of a centipede this big, | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
he's not going to like our giant one. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
I'm slightly nervous! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
So it's nearly time for the big reveal. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
and turn it into art. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
So, let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
That is genius! | 0:13:11 | 0:13:12
I love the different segments of the exoskeleton | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
and the way the legs trawl out over the floor, it is so creepy. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
The rusting effect on the back of the centipede just looks perfect. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:24
Those wispy copper legs are so like the real thing. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
It just looks like this centipede is about to start crawling up the wall. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:33
Well done, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
That was a truly sublime creation. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
We'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
