My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
In this show, my team of artists take my killer moment... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
'And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
'Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
'so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
'This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:37
'Coming up on Deadly Art, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
'I meet a group of predators with a sting in their tail.' | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
(We have got to be careful how we move. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
(The last thing we want to do is get these angry.) | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
'The deadly artists ink up a brilliant work of art.' | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
Wow! | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56 | |
'And you can get creative, too.' | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Today's stinging beastie | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
is probably the most deadly insect found in Britain. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
This is the largest member of the wasp family we have here. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
It's the hornet. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
'A hornet's sting can hurt something that's my size, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
'so imagine how much damage it can do | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
'to something thousands of times smaller.' | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
With a body that can be 3.5 centimetres long | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
and massive munching mandibles, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
sometimes it doesn't even need to use its sting, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
it will just tear its prey apart using its mouthparts. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Hornets are one animal you just don't want to make angry | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
because they have an awful lot of friends, too. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
'Time to meet our friends in the Deadly Art gallery.' | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
And I'm up for today's Deadly Art. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
I'm Nicola. I'm a power tool queen. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
'Mike and Nicola will be representing the Deadly Art team | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
'who are always up for a challenge.' | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
And here are some killer moments to inspire them. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
'Hornets build good-sized hives | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
'and may have as many as 1,000 living in them. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
'But they actually go on the rampage attacking other insects. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
'Sometimes, this could be bees | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
'living in hives with tens of thousands of individuals. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
'And a hornet might kill every single one of them. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
'Stealing their grubs and taking them back to feed their young.' | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
We'll represent the hornet as a predator in its environment. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
Especially in a swarm. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
So let's make sure our hornets are larger than life. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Let's include the nest because they protect that so fiercely. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
-All right. Let's do it! -'Time for some more Deadly Art.' | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
We've decided to create a huge print of a swarm of hornets. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
I'm going to draw the biggest hornet right here, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
really large, in the frame, with it swings stretched across. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Then a trail of hornets getting smaller as they get further away. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
Perfect. This would make a great spot for the nest. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
Maybe hanging on a branch as it comes across into the foreground. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
-Love it. -Let's do it! -OK. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
'While Mike and Nicola get on with their hornet picture, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
'the Deadly 60 crew and I heard about a nest of hornets in a roof. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
'We had to investigate.' | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
-HE WHISPERS: -Right, then. They're just through here, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
in this corner here. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
So if I go in, then you just put your head around the corner. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
We've got to be really, really careful how we move | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
because the last thing we want to do is get these angry. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
That would be very bad news up here. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
Just next to me here,... | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
..this exquisite structure, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
which looks very much like a sort of partially-deflated beach ball, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38
is actually the nest of our largest species of wasp. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:43
They are hornets. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
The reason that we're moving very slowly | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
and trying to keep quiet | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
is that these can actually be quite dangerous. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
They're very, very large. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
From the tip of their abdomen, that is the back of their tail, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
to their head, can be as big as my thumb. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
They have an extremely painful sting. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
If they feel their nest is under threat, they'll use it. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
'Join us later to see if we survived | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
'our hornet encounter without being stung. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
'Let's see how Nicola and Mike are getting on.' | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
We've finished our drawing. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
This large piece of MDF is going to become the base plate for our print. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
Just like potato printing, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
we're going to take away all the areas that we don't need. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
Our print is huge. Instead of putting the print onto the paper, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
we're going to put the paper onto the print. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
Now, just like the potato print, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
we need to chip away all the bits that we don't need. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
That looks like fun. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
Here's a tool. Let's get chipping. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
'Such an interesting technique. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
'Perfect for carving those hornet stripes. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
'Even though there's a lot to do, | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
'Mike's all ready for today's Deadly Doodle.' | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
I'm going to show you how to draw this angry hornet. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
We'll start with a circle in the middle of the page for the body. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
And on top of that, we're going to draw a heart for the head. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
Inside the heart, draw a circle for one eye | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
and a C on the other side of the heart for the other eye. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
Draw in where the antenna are going to go. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
Now we're going to draw a horn shape coming off that circle, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
wrapping around to the bottom. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
This is for the rest of the body. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
Draw three lines for the wings, just to mark out where they go. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
Same on the other side. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
Now, for the legs, just draw zigzag shapes. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
One here, one here. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Two legs on the other side. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
They come out right here and here. That's your pencil sketch done. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
Move on to the markers, add in the details. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
We're going to make our hornet look really angry. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
We're going to draw a W in the middle of our heart, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
come around and finish off his head. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
Draw in the eye. Make sure it's bugging out. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
Then add a highlight in the middle of his eye there. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
Wrap around, finishing off the bottom of that heart. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:21
And then we'll just thicken up those antennae. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Now we'll start the legs. Go back over those lines, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
this time we're going to add in joints. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
They really make the legs look like insect legs. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
Just two little legs on the other side of the body. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Now we're going to start the wings. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:39
Go back over those three lines. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
This time, we're going to close them off at the end | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
by drawing in those two lines. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
If you add a few zigzag lines inside the wings, | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
it looks like they're buzzing. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
Same again on the other side. Zigzag line. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
Now we're going to go back over the body. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
But this time, we're going to add a little bit of fuzz to it. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
Go back over the horn. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
Ending in that point. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
Now add in some stripes. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:07
Curving around the body. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
Now you can colour in the stripes. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
Add some black lines in here | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
and colour in the stinger. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
To emphasise that it's really deadly, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
I'm going to add a few little lines coming out. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
Ouch! | 0:07:23 | 0:07:24 | |
-How's that for a deadly hornet? -'Mean-looking hornet. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
'Time to see your hornets now. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
'We went to Swindon on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
'And here's how some of you got on in the Deadly Art tent.' | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
ALL: Deadly! | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
BOTH: Deadly! | 0:07:40 | 0:07:41
I really enjoyed doing the drawing of the Deadly Doodle. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
I'm very happy with my doodle that I drew today. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
'Well done, you lot. Keep on doodling. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
'Let's get to the Deadly Art studio | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
'and the base plate for the massive ink print is coming together.' | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
We've chipped away the areas we don't need, | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
apart from this larger area all the way around the outside. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
So it's power tool time. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
'Remember, our artists are trained professionals. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
'Don't try this at home. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
'While Mike and Nicola carry on, | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
'let's get back to my visit to a hornet's nest. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
'And I was trying my best not to make them angry.' | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
Hornets are amazing predators. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
They'll catch almost any small insect on the wing | 0:08:20 | 0:08:24
and devour it using their powerful mandibles. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
If it's large enough to need it, it'll paralyse it, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
using their sting. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
And if it hurts me, | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
then any small insect is going to be instantly paralysed. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
-BUZZING -Ooo! Oh, dear. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
Uh-oh. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:44
Right. Now is when we have to bid our retreat. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:50
Because once they're in the air like this, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
is when they're really angry. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
And, er,... | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
if you get stung by one, | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
they release a kind of pheromone, | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
a chemical scent, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:03
which makes all the others attack. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
So now is the time to leave. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
-I think it is time to leave. -OK. He's going for your camera, Mark. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
All right. I might just...I can't turn the light off. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
Oh, he's by my trouser leg. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
'Luckily, we escaped sting-free. Just about. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
'But now, Nicola has got a DIY | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
'that I bet you'll want to have a go at making.' | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
Check out these cool hornet wings, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
complete with stripy straps, just like the hornet's body. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
I think I might just keep them on. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
To make the wings, you'll need 12 coat hangers. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:38
Take six of them for the first wing | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
and cut the hook off five of them and leave one remaining. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:45
Lay them out on a flat surface | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
to create the skeleton of the first wing. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
You can lay them out anywhere you like. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
I'm going to use these cable ties. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
You can get them from any hardware store. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
Alternatively, use string. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
Fix one on every single joint. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
When your skeleton is fixed into position, snip off the excess. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
'Take care when you use scissors.' | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
There you have your finished skeleton. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
Now you're ready to create the membrane. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
Take a big piece of fabric, any fabric you like, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
and ensure that your fabric is bigger than the skeleton itself. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
For this one, I'm using some shiny silvery fabric | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
to reflect the colour of the hornet's wing | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
and then I'm laying over the top this netty fabric | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
to give it some really interesting texture. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
Lay that upside down over the top of your skeleton. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:40
Now glue it into position. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:41
You can use craft glue. It'll just take a bit longer to dry. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
And there you have it. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
Flip it over. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
And trim of all the excess fabric. All the way around the edge. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:59
There it is. Your first wing finished. Doesn't it look great? | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
But it will look even better when you have two of them. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
Now you're ready to make this section of the wings. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
So take an old rucksack. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
Not a new one. We don't want you getting in trouble. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
And cut off the front panel, just like that. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
This is the section we need, the back part with the straps included. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
I've used some coloured tape | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
to simply wrap around to add on my hornet stripes. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:32
At the top, on this side, | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
make a small hole and four more down here. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
Just like that. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
When you position the wings, | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
you want the coat hangers facing downwards. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
I've also made two holes in the wing | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
that match up perfectly with the two on the bag. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
To fix those into position, just use some more cable ties. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:59
And your hornet wings are ready to go. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
Time for me to buzz off. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
'What wonderful wings! | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
'Make your own at home. But don't sting anyone. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
'Back to the big art.' | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
I'm using this oil-based ink to colour the areas of the plate | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
we want to appear on our final print. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
'Nicola and Mike are going to press a huge piece of white paper | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
'up against their board to create a print.' | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
Let's rock and roll. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
'That's it. They've finished.' | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
Ready, Mike? The moment of truth. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
Wow! It looks amazing! | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
-It's so bold and striking! -That's beautiful. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
Now all it needs is yellow paint to really bring that hornet to life. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
Stunning. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
'So it's nearly time for the big reveal. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
'I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
'and turn them into art. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05
'Let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
