My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:020:00:04

I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:070:00:13

But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:130:00:17

..and turn it into art.

0:00:190:00:22

We'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:220:00:26

Along the way, you'll pick up some tips,

0:00:260:00:28

tricks and techniques so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:280:00:31

This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art.

0:00:330:00:37

Coming up on Deadly Art...

0:00:380:00:41

I come face-to-face with the biggest spider in the world.

0:00:410:00:44

Look at the size of her!

0:00:440:00:46

The art team build one of the largest models

0:00:460:00:49

ever attempted on Deadly Art.

0:00:490:00:51

I'm using the airbrush to give it lots of definition.

0:00:510:00:54

And we'll show you how to draw a spider, too.

0:00:540:00:57

So, what are we looking at today?

0:00:570:00:59

These amazing creatures are huge, hairy and pretty scary.

0:00:590:01:04

With fangs twice as long as human teeth and much sharper.

0:01:040:01:08

It's a tarantula.

0:01:080:01:10

But not just any tarantula, this is the Goliath bird-eating tarantula.

0:01:100:01:15

Found in the rainforests of South America,

0:01:150:01:17

they live in burrows that can be a metre underground.

0:01:170:01:20

This is the biggest tarantula in the world

0:01:200:01:23

and they can grow to be as big as a dinner plate.

0:01:230:01:27

And yes, as the name suggests,

0:01:270:01:29

they can, very occasionally, eat birds.

0:01:290:01:33

This animal is seriously deadly.

0:01:330:01:35

Time to meet today's artists on standby in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:350:01:40

Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist

0:01:400:01:42

and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:420:01:44

I'm Jo, I'm a painter,

0:01:440:01:46

a sculptor,

0:01:460:01:48

and a general mess-maker.

0:01:480:01:50

Mike and Jo will be representing the Deadly Art team,

0:01:500:01:54

who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:540:01:56

Here are the killer shots to inspire the artwork.

0:01:560:01:59

This spider is truly a giant,

0:01:590:02:02

with a massive, hairy body and huge fangs.

0:02:020:02:05

I can't wait to see the artwork.

0:02:050:02:07

There's only one thing for it, this artwork is going to be large.

0:02:110:02:14

I like it - big legs, big fangs, everything oversized.

0:02:140:02:17

-It's going to be terrifying!

-Time for some more Deadly Art.

0:02:170:02:20

I'm not sure what part of the spider requires feathers.

0:02:200:02:23

I'm sure we'll find out!

0:02:230:02:25

This is where the back section of the spider will be

0:02:250:02:28

and this is where the front section will be.

0:02:280:02:30

This arc is where the legs are going to end up.

0:02:300:02:32

Same again.

0:02:320:02:34

Just the same.

0:02:340:02:36

This spider is going to be MASSIVE!

0:02:360:02:39

This art has got to be huge.

0:02:390:02:41

On Deadly 60, we made our way through the incredible Amazon rainforest,

0:02:410:02:45

home to lots of creepy-crawlies

0:02:450:02:47

and it didn't take us long to find a Goliath bird-eating spider.

0:02:470:02:51

This spider's venom wouldn't kill me

0:02:510:02:53

but you really don't want to get bitten by those gigantic fangs.

0:02:530:02:58

She does, however, have another form of defence

0:02:580:03:00

that I've got to be really careful of.

0:03:000:03:03

That kicking her leg against her abdomen,

0:03:030:03:07

sending hairs up into the air.

0:03:070:03:11

If those get into your eyes or nose or the back of your throat,

0:03:110:03:16

it can be very irritating and itchy

0:03:160:03:18

and it's actually the spider's primary method

0:03:180:03:22

of getting rid of an attacker,

0:03:220:03:25

despite the fact that it has gigantic fangs.

0:03:250:03:27

She's got fangs that are about as long as a cheetah's claws

0:03:330:03:39

and a good deal sharper.

0:03:390:03:41

She could give me a really, really nasty bite.

0:03:410:03:47

So, I just want to be ever so careful.

0:03:470:03:51

This is the Goliath bird-eating spider.

0:03:510:03:56

Goliath was a giant in the Bible

0:03:560:04:00

and this is a giant among spiders.

0:04:000:04:04

Now, although they are certainly capable of it,

0:04:040:04:09

birds don't actually form a large part of their diet.

0:04:090:04:13

Most of what they'll eat,

0:04:130:04:15

rats and mice, lizards and crickets invertebrates,

0:04:150:04:21

but really, they'll take almost anything

0:04:210:04:24

that is unlucky enough to wander past their burrow.

0:04:240:04:27

Look at the size of her!

0:04:270:04:29

I can feel those hairs that she kicked up into the air,

0:04:290:04:32

I can feel them in the back of my throat and I want to cough

0:04:320:04:36

but it's not really a good time to cough

0:04:360:04:39

with that on your hands.

0:04:390:04:43

As she relaxes, she decides to go for a wander

0:04:450:04:49

and though it's still a little nervy,

0:04:490:04:52

I think I've earned this spider's trust.

0:04:520:04:55

That was a phenomenal experience.

0:04:560:05:00

How are Jo and Mike getting on with their deadly giant?

0:05:000:05:03

This is the front section of the body

0:05:050:05:07

and all the legs attach to these blocks of wood.

0:05:070:05:10

I've got one last one to put in place - give it a mark.

0:05:100:05:13

Now we just have to screw it in.

0:05:150:05:17

This block of polystyrene is angular,

0:05:230:05:25

whereas the body of a spider is rounded,

0:05:250:05:27

so, I'm cutting off the edges

0:05:270:05:30

and then smoothing it into shape.

0:05:300:05:34

-The body is looking good.

-Woo-hoo, it's Christmas!

0:05:340:05:37

Jo's is loving this a bit too much!

0:05:370:05:40

That's the leg support finished.

0:05:400:05:42

Now to make a leg.

0:05:420:05:44

Our spider has two joints in its legs. Here's one right here.

0:05:440:05:49

We've flattened the end of our chrome tube,

0:05:490:05:51

drilled a hole through it and attached it with a bolt and a nut.

0:05:510:05:54

Now we need another one attached right here.

0:05:540:05:57

Mike and Jo are trained professionals.

0:05:570:05:59

Don't try any of our big art techniques at home.

0:05:590:06:02

We have to drill a hole.

0:06:020:06:03

This is really exciting. This art is going to be terrifying.

0:06:030:06:07

Time to draw your own spooky spider now.

0:06:070:06:10

It's Deadly Doodle time.

0:06:100:06:11

I'm going to show you how to draw this truly Deadly Doodle

0:06:110:06:15

of a Goliath bird-eating spider.

0:06:150:06:17

We're going to start with some basic shapes.

0:06:170:06:20

A long, large oval near the top of my page.

0:06:200:06:25

Then some elongated ones inside.

0:06:250:06:30

Over the top, a circle which acts as a guide

0:06:300:06:33

for those beady little eyes that go inside.

0:06:330:06:36

For the front section, the palps, which look like two shorter legs.

0:06:360:06:41

Then we're going to go in

0:06:410:06:44

with angled lines coming down for those big legs.

0:06:440:06:49

As with every spider, there's eight of these.

0:06:510:06:54

So, repeat this eight times.

0:06:540:06:57

OK, now I'm going to go into it with a felt-tip pen,

0:06:570:07:00

starting off with those deadly fangs.

0:07:000:07:03

Those fangs are massive!

0:07:030:07:05

Up, around the fangs and those beady, dark eyes.

0:07:060:07:14

OK, using those lines as a guide,

0:07:160:07:18

I'm going to go around with a jaggedy line

0:07:180:07:22

to make them all furry.

0:07:220:07:24

All I'm doing at the bottom of each leg is a little zigzag

0:07:280:07:33

with fur hanging down.

0:07:330:07:35

This is going to be one hairy spider!

0:07:350:07:38

This is the fun bit.

0:07:380:07:40

Make your spider nice and furry, too.

0:07:400:07:42

Then around the whole body, again, zigzagging, making it really furry.

0:07:420:07:48

Add a bit of shading.

0:07:480:07:49

A bit more fur around his body where his legs are joining.

0:07:510:07:55

The last thing I'm going to do is go underneath all of those legs

0:07:550:08:00

with a bit more shading, really take your time with the shading

0:08:000:08:04

because the more effort you put in,

0:08:040:08:06

the more your spider will jump off the page.

0:08:060:08:09

Th last thing is the little hairs on his legs.

0:08:090:08:12

One Goliath bird-eating spider, is that deadly enough for you?

0:08:120:08:16

Great spider, Jo.

0:08:160:08:17

Keep hold of your doodle because Mike is going to use it in a DIY later.

0:08:170:08:21

Here's how some of you got on with this spider

0:08:210:08:25

when we visited Swindon on a Deadly day out.

0:08:250:08:28

OK, I want all those legs...

0:08:310:08:33

Brilliant.

0:08:350:08:37

ALL: Deadly!

0:08:370:08:39

I'm Leo and this is my Deadly Doodle.

0:08:390:08:42

ALL: Deadly!

0:08:420:08:44

It was really good fun because they told us how to do the tarantula

0:08:440:08:47

and it's helped us improve our drawing skills.

0:08:470:08:50

ALL: Deadly!

0:08:500:08:52

On the TV, when people draw, it looks quite hard

0:08:520:08:55

but when you do it in stages, it is quite easy.

0:08:550:08:57

ALL: Deadly!

0:08:570:08:59

When you're bored, you can just have a pen and paper with you

0:08:590:09:02

and start doodling everywhere.

0:09:020:09:04

I reckon your spiders are almost as good as the real thing.

0:09:040:09:08

Keep on doodling. Let's get back to the Deadly art studio

0:09:080:09:11

and our spider.

0:09:110:09:12

We've got our legs laid out everywhere here

0:09:120:09:15

and they're all at different stages.

0:09:150:09:17

The first stage is the skeleton you saw earlier,

0:09:170:09:20

made up with those three pieces.

0:09:200:09:22

The legs have been covered in this pipe lagging to bulk them out a bit

0:09:220:09:26

and then covered in this nice material

0:09:260:09:28

to give it that spider texture.

0:09:280:09:31

Lastly, I'll pick out a bit of our feather

0:09:310:09:33

and glue it down.

0:09:330:09:35

So that's what the feathers were for!

0:09:350:09:37

Doesn't it make those hairs look realistic?

0:09:370:09:40

The back section of our spider

0:09:400:09:42

is covered in this stretchy velour fabric

0:09:420:09:44

but the front section is much more detailed.

0:09:440:09:47

I'm going to go in with an airbrush and give it lots of definition.

0:09:470:09:52

I love the spraying.

0:09:520:09:53

The shading makes the front section look so lifelike.

0:09:530:09:56

We are moments away from the Big Reveal but now,

0:09:560:09:59

grab your doodle from earlier and let's join Mike for a Deadly DIY.

0:09:590:10:02

I'm going to show you how to do your very own sci-fi movie picture.

0:10:020:10:06

It starts with a cutout of your doodle from earlier.

0:10:060:10:08

I've made sure I've got this detail of all the fur left in there

0:10:080:10:13

all cut out really nice.

0:10:130:10:14

That's just the spider, so we'll put that to the side for now.

0:10:140:10:17

We're going to work on the background.

0:10:170:10:19

For the background, I've chosen bright orange

0:10:190:10:22

to offset our dark spider and I've put that on a piece of foam board.

0:10:220:10:26

All comic books have this starburst kind of style

0:10:260:10:29

so to get that effect, I'm going to take a piece of grey card

0:10:290:10:33

and we are going to to draw out our starburst.

0:10:330:10:37

That's just a simple circle in the middle

0:10:370:10:41

and you can draw out a whole bunch of points.

0:10:410:10:45

It's like drawing in a giant sun.

0:10:450:10:48

Just cut it out.

0:10:480:10:50

Making sure to cut out the inside, leaving the outside,

0:10:500:10:54

because that's the important part.

0:10:540:10:56

It's looking good. Awesome! I'm going to stick that down on top.

0:10:560:11:01

Now we need to move on to the town,

0:11:010:11:03

where our spider has destroyed all of our buildings.

0:11:030:11:06

We'll start with three lines.

0:11:060:11:08

I'm going to join those lines at the top.

0:11:080:11:12

I'm going to do it the same again by adding a little tiny roof

0:11:120:11:15

and maybe even a little dome.

0:11:150:11:17

Now I'm going to draw in some windows

0:11:170:11:19

which are upside down U's,

0:11:190:11:21

getting smaller as we go down the building.

0:11:210:11:24

Just split the building in half.

0:11:250:11:28

These lines come together at the bottom

0:11:280:11:30

to give perspective. We're going to colour it in.

0:11:300:11:33

I'm going to use a grey crayon and a purple crayon

0:11:330:11:36

all around for the grey.

0:11:360:11:38

Then a little purple highlight.

0:11:380:11:41

Happy with that.

0:11:430:11:44

The last thing we add are a few cracks in the building,

0:11:440:11:48

as if it's about to fall to pieces. Get a nice, thick, black outline.

0:11:480:11:52

The more detail you put in this, the better it will look.

0:11:530:11:57

Now we just need to cut it out.

0:11:570:11:59

OK, we've got our finished building.

0:12:020:12:05

A little double-sided tape on the back.

0:12:050:12:08

I want it to look like our buildings are falling over

0:12:080:12:12

so we're going to place them in at a few jaunty angles.

0:12:120:12:16

The smallest buildings being in the middle,

0:12:160:12:19

working out to the biggest buildings on the outside.

0:12:190:12:22

I'm going to add in a road. Stick that down over our buildings.

0:12:220:12:26

Perfect! Now we need to add in our spider.

0:12:280:12:31

I want him at a jaunty angle also, as if he's rearing up.

0:12:310:12:34

All right, there you have it - the attack of the 50-foot spider!

0:12:340:12:38

Now we can make our DIY even more deadly

0:12:380:12:41

by adding a picture of me and Jo running away from a massive spider.

0:12:410:12:46

Run for your lives!

0:12:460:12:48

Nice one, Mike.

0:12:480:12:49

Right, back to our giant spider model and a few finishing touches.

0:12:490:12:54

And it looks like they're just about finished.

0:12:560:13:00

This has got to be the biggest tarantula in the world,

0:13:010:13:05

quite literally.

0:13:050:13:07

The sculpture's great, it's massive, hairy and very scary.

0:13:070:13:10

And it makes me feel so small!

0:13:100:13:12

So, it's nearly time for the Big Reveal.

0:13:120:13:15

I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots

0:13:160:13:19

and turn it into art.

0:13:190:13:22

So, let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:220:13:24

Oh, wow, the spider is huge in real life and in art, it's even bigger!

0:13:250:13:31

I love this giant deadly spider model with its realistic hairy legs,

0:13:310:13:35

massive body and scary fangs

0:13:350:13:38

and, now it's moving, it looks even more terrifying!

0:13:380:13:41

Well done, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.

0:13:410:13:45

What an incredible creation.

0:13:450:13:47

Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:470:13:49

and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
