My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking Deadly Animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:13
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
Coming up on Deadly Art... | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
I get close to one of the most lethal predators in the world. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
I've never seen anything like this in my life. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
My team of artists recreate another killer moment using sand. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
It's really life-like, nice work. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
And you can get creative too. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
So what are we looking at today? | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
What do you get when you put strength, stealth, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
speed and super senses together? | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
Well, you get one extraordinary predator, the leopard. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
Like all big cats, their hunting abilities are second to none, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
but the leopard has super powers. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
This is an animal that can leap six metres. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
They can run towards their prey at speeds of up to 60kph | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
and they use their camouflaged coat to ambush their victims. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
Today's artists are waiting in the Deadly Art studio. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
I've drawn piranhas, wolverines, and I'm up for today's Deadly Art. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
I'm Nicola and I'm the power-tool queen. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
Nicola and Mike will be representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
And this is a killer moment to inspire the artists - | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
when a leopard stalks its prey. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
This is an awesome predator, it's completely camouflaged in the grass. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:03
Look at him stalking up on his prey. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
-I can't wait to get stuck into some sand. -Let's do it. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Time for some more Deadly Art. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
This is going to very handy. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
Nicola's a professional sand sculptor, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
so you know this will be great. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
While Mike's compacting the body, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
I'll compact the head in a different way. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
This part needs to be stronger, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
and it's going to have a bit more detail. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
I've got a wooden box, lots of sand, plenty of water | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
and my favourite power tool, the Wacker. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
-You might want to put these on, Mike. -Right, thanks. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Don't try anything you see in today's Big Art. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
The Wacker compacts the sand into a cube, so Nicola can carve a head. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
I can't wait to see our Deadly Art leopard. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
I got to see the real thing in a rainy Namibia. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
It had just been battling with a warthog. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
That is so beautiful. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
'It's our first clear look at the leopard, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
'and we can see the warthog's blood on its fur.' | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
There's a den there, at the base of that termite mound, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
and she's going... She's going in! | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
No. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20 | |
Just can't seem to make up her mind. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
It just shows how difficult | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
life is for a predator here. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Everything they might want to eat | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
has tusks, horns, hooves. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
Just imagine what it would be like if every time | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
you wanted to have a meal, | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
you had to put your life at risk. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
That's effectively what's happening | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
for this leopard here. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
If that warthog's still alive, | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
it's still a mortal danger to her. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
'And yet it's just another day | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
'in the life of one of Africa's top predators. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
'More fun from our furry friend later. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
'Back to Mike and Nicola, | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
'and it looks like the sand is ready to carve.' | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
I've got my solid cube, now I just need to turn it into a head. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
I'm going to start by sketching in the top section of his head. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
Mike's working on the body. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
Now I have to chip away to get the shape. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
It's a big job, but it's really taking shape. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
Look at those fabulous features. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
As you can see, the head's really coming along now. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
Nicola's going to take a quick break from the sand leopard | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
because it's Deadly Doodle time. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
I'm going to show you how to draw this leopard. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
We'll start with some simple shapes, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
a cup shape in the centre of your page with one straight edge. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:45
On top of that, towards the right, a big triangle will form his nose. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54
Two more triangles here for his eyes. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Then, add a semicircle | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
from the top of that triangle | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
to the centre of his nose | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
and another one to the corner of his mouth. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
Then mirror that line directly above it. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
Draw a large V shape on the left-hand side, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
square it off at the bottom and do the same at the top. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
And on this platform here, add a triangle | 0:05:21 | 0:05:26
and the same on this side, but a lot bigger. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
In his mouth, draw a big M shape, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
and that's all we need. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
Now we can move on to the marker pen. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
He looks very angular now, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39
so when you define your lines | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
with a marker pen, you can be more fluid and organic. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
We will start with the ear... | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
and move up onto the head, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
creating another M shape. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
Fill in that second ear, and then onto the eyes. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
To make them look extra menacing, make this top line nice and chunky. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:03
Fill in the pupil, then do the same on the other side. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:11
Two circles inside for his eyes. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
And onto his nose. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
And add that line just there in the centre. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
Draw in these cheeks. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
And curve that all the way around | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
to the bottom of his mouth. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
Then his neck is using this guideline here | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
all the way down, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
but his jaw comes from the top of his ear. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
So you want a second elongated V, | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
then add a hairy chin at the bottom. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
Give him some fangs, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:54
two at the top, two at the bottom... | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
..and four extra teeth in between. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
Fill in the tongue. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
Now it's time for those finer details. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
An eyebrow, some texture inside his ear and, of course, | 0:07:13 | 0:07:18
no leopard is complete without his spots. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
So we'll do some small ones at the top, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
and they get increasingly bigger as we move down the face. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
Then on his neck, they can be bigger yet again. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
Then just some whiskers to finish off. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
And there he is, your Deadly Doodle. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
That leopard looks great! | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
Here's how some of you got on with this doodle, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
when we visited Crawley on a Deadly day out. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
You all joined the team in the Deadly Art tent | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
and drew some incredible leopards with Nicola. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
Down here with this line all the way down to the bottom. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
Wow, look at those! | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
Wow, I'm really, really impressed. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Fantastic. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
Here's my Deadly Doodle of a leopard. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:17
Here's my Deadly Doodle. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
Here's my Deadly Doodle. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
Oh, I'm seriously impressed! | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
Remember to keep on doodling. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
Nicola's using water and a brush | 0:08:31 | 0:08:32
to create the leopard's fur texture. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
And it's all about the killer stare. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
Our leopard is on the hunt, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
so we need his eyes to look really determined. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
Mike's making that powerful tail. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
That's looking nice. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
Now, one last little technique. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
If you do a little undercut like this, | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
just at the base of the tail, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
it makes it really pop out from the sand. | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
You can see that adding detail really makes a difference. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
Look at that huge tooth. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
Now back to a stormy Namibia, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
and our leopard had moved closer. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
I do not believe this, | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
this is Africa's most elusive, | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
most secretive cat just wandering round, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
trying to figure out what her next move's going to be. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
I've never seen anything like this in my life. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
If she gets any closer, don't move a muscle. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
'Knowing that she's perfectly capable | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
'of springing into the back of our truck in an instant | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
'certainly heightens the nerves. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
'She's closer than any of us had ever dared hope. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
'But an experience I'll never forget. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
'Let's join Mike, who's got a very cool Deadly DIY to show you.' | 0:09:53 | 0:09:58
I'm going to show you how to turn a normal bin into... | 0:09:58 | 0:10:02
the deadliest bin you've ever seen, a leopard bin. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
So you start with a normal bin and you need to cover it in fabric. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:11
I'm going to work on this piece, it's a plastic bottle piece, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
for our nose and our mouth. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
So we're going to get a two-litre plastic bottle. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
Just cut out the top third. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
Use half of this bottle, so cut that in half. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
Take care when you use scissors. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
OK, now we've got our plastic piece. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
We secure that to our foamboard with some tape. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
With our nose and mouth completed, | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
just like our skeleton bin, got that piece done. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
Now we cover it in fabric. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
You can use normal craft glue, it just takes longer to dry. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:46
When you get to the end, fold that piece down to create that nose. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
Glue the top section to the lid. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
Now to cover up the middle of our mouth. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
For that, you need two foamboard pieces, same size as your lid. | 0:10:55 | 0:11:00
Then we add on that pink tongue. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
This is made of foam, but you could also use cardboard. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
And we've got the same thing again - a pink foam nose. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
Perfect. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:09
We'll use the underside of leopard fabric | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
for the inside of the ear, just like that. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
So we'll glue that down first. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
OK, we'll just tuck all those pieces in. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
Then to cover up those folds, we use our other fur piece | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
and glue that on top. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
Flip it over, | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
fold over that flap. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:32
And when you've made two of them, stick them to the head. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
Right, it's really taking shape now. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
Now for the eyes. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
As you can see, we have used two pieces of a paper cup here. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
Grab our paper cup. Cut out the bottom of that, | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
so it makes it really easy to cut it in half. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
Cut it in half again. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
Now we can cover them in fabric. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
Now we can work on the eyes. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
You have to get my favourite craft store item, the polystyrene ball. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
I've taken one ball and I've cut it into four sections. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
We need two of those for the eyeballs. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
I've gone ahead and | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
coloured my eyeballs in. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:08
I've got green, yellow and black | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
to offset that leopard fabric pattern. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:15
That's all secured, now we can attach our face back to the bin. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
Now, the last thing you need to add are those deadly teeth. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
There you have your finished deadly leopard bin. Feeding time. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:28
That'll make a perfect addition to any bedroom. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
Back to our sand leopard. Mike and Nicola are spraying | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
beautiful spots of paint onto the sand. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
That's it, one Deadly Art leopard completed. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
I absolutely love it. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
Yeah, I'm really happy with this one. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
I love that he's larger than life | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
and the muscle definition really looks like the leopard | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
in that killer moment. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:01
And the way you've captured all that character in his face, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
it's really life-like. Nice work. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
Earlier, I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
and turn it into art. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:10
So let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
I love this! | 0:13:14 | 0:13:15
Lurking down amongst the dry grasses, | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
this sand leopard is perfectly camouflaged. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
I love the way its sinuous shoulders | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
really bring out the musculature of this incredible predator. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:27
And the paws are huge. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:29
He just looks like his eyes are fixed on me ready to pounce. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:34
I can't believe this is just sand. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
The head and the eyes are focused on its prey. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
A perfect killer moment and a perfect Deadly Art. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
What an incredible creation! | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY, | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
