My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:020:00:05

I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:070:00:10

But in this show my team of artists take my killer moment

0:00:130:00:16

and turn it into art.

0:00:190:00:21

And we'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:220:00:24

Along the way you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks

0:00:260:00:29

and techniques so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:290:00:33

This is no ordinary art show.

0:00:330:00:35

This is Deadly Art.

0:00:350:00:37

Coming up on Deadly Art, I'm in Brazil on the lookout

0:00:410:00:43

for a weird, giant predator.

0:00:430:00:45

I can't believe how close we are!

0:00:450:00:47

Our team work on a superb killer piece of artwork.

0:00:470:00:50

Let's get scrunching and sticking.

0:00:500:00:52

And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle.

0:00:520:00:55

Relative to its size, this odd-looking animal

0:00:570:00:59

has one of the longest tongues in the whole animal kingdom.

0:00:590:01:02

It also has a long nose, a bushy tail

0:01:020:01:06

and its own in-built deadly weapons in the form of its claws.

0:01:060:01:10

This is the giant anteater.

0:01:100:01:13

It can smell its prey from several miles away.

0:01:130:01:16

It's snack of choice is ants.

0:01:160:01:18

It eats as many as 30,000 of them a day

0:01:180:01:22

and it certainly knows how to hunt in style.

0:01:220:01:25

Over to our artists, ready and waiting in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:250:01:28

Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:280:01:32

I'm Jo, I'm a painter and a general mess-maker.

0:01:320:01:37

Mike and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team

0:01:370:01:39

who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:390:01:42

And this is today's killer moment to inspire our artwork.

0:01:420:01:45

Look at those super sharp claws,

0:01:460:01:48

perfect for digging down into rock-hard termite mounds.

0:01:480:01:51

Whoa...look at that fur.

0:01:540:01:56

Yeah, it's really thick and bushy

0:01:560:01:58

and they have those lovely unique markings.

0:01:580:02:01

And as Steve says, anteaters are infamous for slurping up ants.

0:02:010:02:04

So we'll have the predator and the prey.

0:02:040:02:06

Love it! Let's get to work.

0:02:060:02:08

Time for some more deadly art.

0:02:080:02:09

We're doing a textured painting so we'll need lots of texture.

0:02:090:02:13

Turning wallpaper into art?

0:02:130:02:15

This will be interesting.

0:02:150:02:16

The anteater is drawn on to the canvas

0:02:210:02:23

and I'm tracing individual sections.

0:02:230:02:26

Now it's time for the head.

0:02:260:02:27

I've taken all of Jo's tracings.

0:02:330:02:35

I've figured out this is the leg.

0:02:350:02:37

I'm transferring them to all these different kinds of paper.

0:02:370:02:40

We'll combine all these textures,

0:02:400:02:42

stick them to our canvas to make our final painting.

0:02:420:02:44

So I'd better get on with tracing the leg.

0:02:440:02:46

Let's leave Mike and Jo in the opening stages

0:02:500:02:53

of their astounding anteater

0:02:530:02:55

and look back to when I was on the trail of this incredible animal.

0:02:550:02:59

Brazil is nearly 35 times the size of the UK,

0:02:590:03:02

with incredible views, so I decided to explore it from up high

0:03:020:03:05

with my team and tour guide Dudu.

0:03:050:03:07

Oh my goodness!

0:03:070:03:09

This is an animal only found in South America and one

0:03:100:03:13

I've been DYING to see

0:03:130:03:15

because they're incredible and unusual predators.

0:03:150:03:18

Oh, I can't believe how close we are. Look at that!

0:03:180:03:22

This is ridiculous. He is right next to us.

0:03:220:03:26

Right, I think we should leave him alone at the moment cos

0:03:280:03:31

we're probably stressing him out a bit.

0:03:310:03:33

I think our best way of getting close to a giant anteater

0:03:330:03:36

is on foot.

0:03:360:03:37

OK, Dudu?

0:03:370:03:39

That was incredible!

0:03:390:03:41

Absolutely unbelievable.

0:03:410:03:43

But that's not the last glimpse we got of a giant anteater.

0:03:430:03:47

More later. How are Jo and Mike getting on with their art version?

0:03:470:03:50

All the sections of the anteater are cut out

0:03:500:03:54

so I'm sticking them down to create a variety of textures.

0:03:540:03:58

Those wallpaper cuttings add a beautiful texture.

0:03:580:04:00

I've painted this background colour wash in this lovely forest green,

0:04:030:04:08

but check this out...

0:04:080:04:09

I've got a really bright orange which will be the basecoat for the anthill.

0:04:090:04:13

While Jo works on the background, now it's your turn to be

0:04:130:04:16

a budding Deadly Artist.

0:04:160:04:18

Here's Mike with a Deadly Doodle.

0:04:180:04:21

I'm going to show you how to do a Deadly Doodle of a giant anteater.

0:04:210:04:25

All of our doodles are based on simple shapes

0:04:250:04:28

and today our giant anteater is based simply on ovals.

0:04:280:04:31

So we're going to start with a big oval for the body

0:04:310:04:34

in the middle of our page.

0:04:340:04:36

And a little oval for the head.

0:04:360:04:38

And another big oval, that huge, bushy tail they have.

0:04:380:04:41

Another oval for the back leg,

0:04:420:04:44

one for the paw.

0:04:470:04:49

There's another leg on the other side.

0:04:490:04:51

I'll draw that with another oval.

0:04:510:04:54

Then he has his front leg which is another three ovals.

0:04:540:04:58

Now we're going to join all those shapes up.

0:04:580:05:01

With a line and that's going to bring us

0:05:020:05:05

to the nose which is just a cone coming off of that front oval.

0:05:050:05:09

That's our pencil sketch all done.

0:05:090:05:11

Let's go in with our black marker and add in some of the details.

0:05:110:05:15

Add in those ears which are just two C shapes.

0:05:150:05:18

Add in the little eye.

0:05:180:05:20

And come down to the forehead, adding in the nose

0:05:200:05:24

and a little snout at the end which look just like an elephant snout.

0:05:240:05:28

There's the jaw, come back.

0:05:300:05:32

Now all anteaters have these specific markings

0:05:320:05:36

which start from the back of their jaw up to the middle of their back

0:05:360:05:40

and comes back down their leg, like that.

0:05:400:05:43

Which means we can draw in the rest of our leg.

0:05:430:05:46

And anteaters also have these markings which kind of look

0:05:460:05:49

like a furry wrist band on all of their legs so we'll draw that in.

0:05:490:05:52

We'll go back over the back leg here.

0:05:540:05:57

Go to the paw, come back around, add that back into the body.

0:05:570:06:01

Fill in under his belly, and that paw which is in the background.

0:06:030:06:07

Add another leg just tucked in behind that.

0:06:080:06:11

Now I'll start with the fur on top of the body.

0:06:130:06:15

I'm just using a scratchy line to go back over that.

0:06:150:06:18

Come down to the big, bushy tail...

0:06:190:06:22

You can use big zigzag lines here to get all that fur in there.

0:06:220:06:26

Now we have to colour in our anteater correctly

0:06:280:06:31

so we're going to use

0:06:310:06:32

big black lines here on his back leg

0:06:320:06:35

all the way down to his tummy.

0:06:350:06:37

And also one just over his front leg.

0:06:370:06:40

All right, he's looking good!

0:06:420:06:44

Now we're going to add in some claws. Three on each paw.

0:06:440:06:47

And of course he's missing one thing which is...

0:06:500:06:52

his HUGE tongue.

0:06:520:06:55

So we'll draw a big S shape coming out.

0:06:550:06:58

If you want to add a tiny little ant trying to just scurry away,

0:07:000:07:03

three circles... make him look a little bit scared.

0:07:030:07:06

-How's that for a Deadly Doodle?

-Good work, Mike.

0:07:080:07:11

We went to Swindon on a Deadly Day Out

0:07:110:07:13

and here's how you got on when you visited the Deadly Art tent.

0:07:130:07:17

Go back over it like a little snake.

0:07:170:07:19

ALL SHOUT: DEADLY!

0:07:190:07:21

This is my doodle of an anteater.

0:07:230:07:26

ALL SHOUT: DEADLY!

0:07:260:07:28

This is my Deadly Doodle!

0:07:280:07:31

This is my deadly anteater.

0:07:310:07:33

The deadliest bit is the tongue.

0:07:330:07:35

He uses his super long tongue and captures termites or ants.

0:07:350:07:39

I particularly liked all of it.

0:07:390:07:41

Deadly Art is great!

0:07:410:07:44

Mine's deadly!

0:07:440:07:46

-No, it's not!

-It looks pretty deadly to me.

0:07:460:07:48

Well done, you're all budding artists.

0:07:480:07:51

Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio,

0:07:510:07:54

and those fabulous textures are bringing our anteater to life.

0:07:540:07:57

The fabric has been scrunched up and stuck on the tree and the foliage.

0:07:570:08:01

I'm working on the ant hill, so let's get scrunching and sticking.

0:08:010:08:05

All the blue colours are dry now

0:08:080:08:10

so I'm going back over with some white paint to dry brush

0:08:100:08:13

over those textures and really pick out some highlights.

0:08:130:08:15

It's looking like the real thing.

0:08:150:08:18

Back in Brazil, as far as real giant anteaters were concerned,

0:08:180:08:21

we were on a roll.

0:08:210:08:22

(Just come up to here.)

0:08:280:08:31

(Look how close he is.)

0:08:420:08:44

This has got to be one of the most remarkable,

0:08:440:08:47

one of the most bizarre creatures in the whole world.

0:08:470:08:50

This is absolutely perfect for us.

0:08:500:08:52

Because the wind is coming from him towards us.

0:08:540:08:58

He's got his snout right down an ant hole.

0:08:580:09:01

Looks like he's feeding.

0:09:080:09:10

He's actually even...

0:09:100:09:11

looks like he's feeding around the branches of the tree.

0:09:110:09:14

I just can't BELIEVE how close we're getting!

0:09:140:09:17

'Despite all our care,

0:09:190:09:21

'it was only a matter of time before the anteater caught a whiff of us.'

0:09:210:09:24

Look at that.

0:09:270:09:29

He's just stopping to check me out every five metres or so.

0:09:290:09:33

Nose in the air. Look, there you go.

0:09:330:09:35

He's got me and once he starts running it's all over.

0:09:350:09:39

'A fascinating animal.

0:09:400:09:42

'Now, out big art anteater has loads of texture

0:09:420:09:44

'so here's Jo to show you some texturising tips.'

0:09:440:09:47

I'm taking Mike's cool doodle of an anteater

0:09:470:09:50

and make a wax rubbing which is really going to bring it to life

0:09:500:09:52

and give it loads of texture.

0:09:520:09:55

The first thing we'll do is take these sticks,

0:09:550:09:58

which you can get in any craft store.

0:09:580:10:00

Make a little pack together like this with a bit of tape on each end.

0:10:000:10:04

Pack them together nice and tight

0:10:040:10:08

and that's going to give us our fur texture.

0:10:080:10:11

So just lie your drawing over the top of these sticks.

0:10:110:10:15

I'll start with a grey wax crayon and just start colouring it in.

0:10:150:10:20

Press nice and hard

0:10:200:10:23

and as you can see, it gives you that lovely fur texture.

0:10:230:10:27

Moving all the way down to the tip of his nose.

0:10:280:10:31

Change it again, back down his tail.

0:10:310:10:33

Now Jo's using a chunky brown crayon.

0:10:370:10:40

Go in with a different colour, it gives it this cross-hatching effect.

0:10:400:10:43

And the last colour I'm going to take is black

0:10:430:10:46

to go underneath the anteater

0:10:460:10:49

and really give him such shading and definition.

0:10:490:10:52

So that's the rubbing part done.

0:10:550:10:57

I'm going go get rid of my sticks and I'm going to go all over it

0:10:570:11:01

with loads and loads of wax, really build up lots and lots of layers.

0:11:010:11:05

Make sure you build up a really thick layer of wax

0:11:050:11:07

cos we'll do something really cool.

0:11:070:11:09

Almost there.

0:11:090:11:11

Great, now it's really covered in wax.

0:11:120:11:15

Now for the fun bit.

0:11:150:11:17

I'm going to go in with a comb.

0:11:170:11:19

I'm going to give him a hair do.

0:11:190:11:21

This is going to scrape off loads of that wax

0:11:210:11:25

and give another dimension to his fur.

0:11:250:11:27

And as you can see I shows through the colour underneath.

0:11:270:11:31

Now that is one furry anteater.

0:11:330:11:34

The last thing I'll do is go back over all his markings

0:11:340:11:38

with a marker pen.

0:11:380:11:39

Drawing back in over his legs.

0:11:390:11:43

So give it real definition.

0:11:460:11:49

Don't worry if you go out of the edges cos you're going to cut it out.

0:11:490:11:52

Then when you finish your anteater,

0:11:540:11:57

you're going to stick it on to a piece of foam board

0:11:570:12:00

and cut it out, just like we've done here.

0:12:000:12:03

Pop it into his habitat.

0:12:030:12:06

And we've put on a pipe cleaner for that long,

0:12:060:12:08

slurpy tongue about to feed on all of those ants.

0:12:080:12:11

Is that deadly enough for you?

0:12:110:12:12

The pipe cleaner adds that finishing touch. Nice one, Jo.

0:12:120:12:16

Back to the big art.

0:12:160:12:17

Our painting's nearly finished,

0:12:170:12:19

now it's time to add that super-slurpy textured tongue.

0:12:190:12:22

But we're still missing a little something extra.

0:12:250:12:28

-How's it going, Jo?

-This is great.

0:12:280:12:30

I'm making a lino cut of an ant so we can block print

0:12:300:12:32

over and over again on our canvas to make our ant colony.

0:12:320:12:35

I'd better make mine.

0:12:350:12:36

Block printing is such a good way to replicate something

0:12:380:12:40

lots of times in a piece of art.

0:12:400:12:42

That ant look great. In fact all the ants look great.

0:12:450:12:49

If only they knew a brutal predator was lurking close by.

0:12:490:12:52

Well, the giant anteater looks just about finished to me.

0:12:550:12:59

Let's see how it turned out. Oh, I love it!

0:12:590:13:01

It's all about that killer moment. Our anteater is scraping the rock

0:13:010:13:04

-and slurping up all those ants.

-But it's Deadly ART

0:13:040:13:07

and the texture in that collage really brings it to life.

0:13:070:13:11

A living giant anteater right here in the studio.

0:13:110:13:13

So it's nearly time for the Big Reveal.

0:13:130:13:16

I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots

0:13:160:13:19

and turn them into art.

0:13:190:13:21

So let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:210:13:25

This artwork really has frozen a glorious, colourful moment in time.

0:13:250:13:30

It look like our anteater's just about to start hoovering up

0:13:300:13:34

thousands and thousands of tasty ants.

0:13:340:13:37

And the claws look mega sharp.

0:13:370:13:39

I love all the different textures from the wallpapers,

0:13:390:13:42

it really brings it to life.

0:13:420:13:43

Nice work, team.

0:13:430:13:45

What an incredible creation.

0:13:450:13:47

Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:470:13:49

and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
