My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
In this show, my team of artists take my killer moment... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
tricks and techniques so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
'Coming up on Deadly Art, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
'in South Africa, I go diving with some seriously deadly pack hunters.' | 0:00:42 | 0:00:47
That was too close! | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
'The Deadly artists recreate another killer moment.' | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
I love the sheer size of our sharks. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
'And we've got some cool art for you to try at home.' | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
In today's programme, we'll meet the top fish in the sea, the shark. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:06
But we're dealing with a very special, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
particularly spectacular group of sharks | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
that have an unbelievable strategy for catching their prey. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
These are the blacktip sharks. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
'All sharks are predators and will feed on other animals. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
'They have rows of teeth which are replaced throughout their life. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
'They may go through 30,000 teeth in a lifetime, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
'which means they're never short of a sharp tooth or two.' | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
But what makes blacktip sharks particularly deadly | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
is their ability to work together. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
'They're a team. They work almost like a pack of wolves | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
'to make them even more efficient at catching their prey. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
Let's meet our artists in the Deadly Art studio. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
I'm all about getting stuck in. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
'Mike and Michelle are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
'who are always up for a challenge.' | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
And here is the killer moment to inspire the artists. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
Just look at the speed of this shark shoal. It is incredible. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
So, how about this for a challenge? | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Not just one blacktip, but a whole shoal of them. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
Steve's killer moment is all about that shoal. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
So we definitely need more than one shark here. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
We could go with a painting, but in this one, we need movement. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
We want their size, we want them swimming around us | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
to create that real shark experience. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
-So we're going to need this. -And we're going to need THESE. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
'Time for some more Deadly Art.' | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
This is what our finished shark will look like. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
We'll create a whole load of them. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
We're going to make our sharks huge. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
And we're going to make them out of these sheets of styrene plastic. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
We'll draw shapes onto these sheets, cut them out, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
fold them and then fix them together to create a shark like this. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
As you can see, I've started drawing out the tail, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
which looks like a massive butterfly. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
But when you fold this over, you get your tailfin, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
just like on the model here. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
And then, if we move over to the head, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
we need to create a shape that looks just like this. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
I'll borrow that to use as my reference and start drawing the head. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:15
-I'll move onto the body. -OK. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
'I reckon these sharks are going to be huge and fearsome. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
'Judging by the paper model, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
'the largest sculptures are going to be brilliant. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
'We'll take a trip to South Africa, notorious for its wealth of sharks. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
'So on Deadly 60, we braved the stormy seas to find some.' | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
Amazing! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
'So, what makes them deadly? | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
'Well, the blacktip's body shape is like a blueprint | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
'for an underwater hunter.' | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
Look at the way the body's designed. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
Oh! Thanks a lot(!) | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
It's like a torpedo. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Sharp nose, slender, sleek lines. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
So perfect for cutting through the water at speed. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
'They're highly manoeuvrable, | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
'and, just like wolves, they hunt in packs. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
'Working as a team, they sniff out their prey | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
'with their scintillating sense of smell. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
'Corralling it into a tight shoal. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
'And from here on in, it's just chaos. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
'The sharks corkscrew through the fishy feast, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
'snatching with razor-sharp teeth, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
'making mincemeat of entire shoals of fish. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
'Each single shark is a formidable force, | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
'but together as a team, they're unstoppable.' | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
Whoa! | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58 | |
'Despite their teeth, they know exactly what they're doing. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
'And my crew return to the boat all in one piece. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
'Now you can get involved. It's Deadly Doodle time.' | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
I'll show you how to do a Deadly Doodle of a blacktip shark. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
First of all, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
you're going to draw curved lines that meet at the top. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
At the bottom, you're going to draw the strong fin. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Next up, you need to draw a large fin at the top of the shark's head. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
And then one on the bottom. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
And now I'm going to draw in the deadly mouth. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
Now I'm drawing the fin on the side of the shark's body. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
That's another simple curved line | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
going all the way back up to the top. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
Up at the top, we've got the three strong gills. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
These are just like arrow shapes. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
One, two, three. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:08
Now I'm going to draw in that menacing eye. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
Just a series of lines. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
The first one like an upside-down V. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
And for the last bit, it's like a triangle shape. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
Next, we're going to do the lower fins. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
So at the bottom, I'm drawing a teardrop shape, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
and then on the other fin, a hook, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
with a line coming down to meet the bottom fin. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
Now I'm going to draw the smaller fins on the lower part of the body. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
And these are just a series of U shapes. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
Once you've got all those details, | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
put your pencil down and pick up your black marker pen. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
All I'm doing is going all along the outline... | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
just following my lines all the way around. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
Down the bottom of the body. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
So I'm just going around with the black marker pen. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Over our tail. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
And the bottom fin. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
Remember those sharks have that black tip. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
So with my marker pen, I'm just colouring it in. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
And now the same on the bottom. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
And again, with the lower fins, I'm going to do those tips. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
There we go. And now onto the really strong gills. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
And all I'm doing is bringing them up and out. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
So they look 3D and really rigid. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
So I'm just going over those gill lines, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
making them a lot darker and more sketchy. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
And finally, the teeth. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
We're going to go around the pencil line... | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
..and now inside, I'll draw zigzags for those fierce, sharp teeth. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
And there you have your deadly blacktip shark. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
'That shark looks fierce! How did you get on drawing the doodle? | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
'We went to Devon on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
'And here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.' | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
ALL: Deadly Art! | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
BOTH: This is my Deadly Doodle! | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
I've drawn a blacktip shark. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
Mine's a pinktip shark because I had a pink pen. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
My name is Tallulah and this is my Deadly Doodle. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
I'm very happy with my blacktip shark. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
Hi, I'm Ronnie. This is my blacktip shark. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it. It's deadly, without a doubt. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
'They all look brilliant. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
'Keep on doodling. Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
-'Mike's onto the tail.' -Awesome! | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
Our sharks are starting to take shape. Look how big they are! | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
They look amazing. I'm going to leave you to it | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
and focus on the shark's deadly mouth. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
I've got a piece of plastic here. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
I've cut it into a mouth shape, but I need to create an open jaw. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
So to do that, I'm using a heat gun | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
and I'll bend it into position by melting this section here. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
Now, as you heat it, the plastic becomes a lot more pliable. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
So that's the jaw shape, and now for the fierce teeth. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
Again, I'm just using plastic and just cutting some triangles. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
They can be all different sizes. Snap these off. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
I'm going to use my heat gun again... | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
to melt one to the other. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
'This is a great technique, but remember, don't try anything | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
'you see in our Big Art sections. Mike and Michelle are professionals. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:17
'Let's take a breather. Mike's got a very stylish DIY for you.' | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
I'm going to show you how to make | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
this brilliant blacktip shark hoodie. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
With cool eyes, gills and massive fin | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
and, of course, those razor-sharp teeth. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
First, you're going to need a hoodie. I've used a grey hoodie. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
You could use any colour you want, but get permission first | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
because we're going to cut the hoodie up. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
Now, we're going to cut along the back seam of our hood. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
With scissors, cut through, following the seam. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
This is where the fin is going. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
Once you've cut that out, start on the fin. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
Grab two pieces of foam. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
The important thing is, this has to fit inside your hoodie. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
Make sure your hole is big enough. That should work perfectly. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
I'm going to glue these two pieces together. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
You could use craft glue, it just takes longer to dry. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
Once your fin is dry, you can insert the smaller fin. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
It's the same size, just a bit thinner, made out of cardboard. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
And when you slide that in, you can see it no longer flops around. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
Now the base of the fin. We've got another piece of foam, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
just in a rectangle shape, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:19
and we're going to glue that to the bottom, just like that. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
Fit this inside the hoodie. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
Make sure the fin is pointing the right way, like this. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
And you can see the base catches it so it doesn't come out. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
Now we have to glue the base of the fin inside the hoodie. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
It's really important to glue this fin down securely. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
Cos we want it to stand up really straight. OK. And there you go. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
You've got a fin sticking out of your hoodie. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:43
Now, these are called blacktip sharks | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
because at the end of each fin, they have a little black marking. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
So I've got another piece of foam | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
and I'm going to glue one to each side. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
Now we've got our black tip on our fin. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
So next thing we need to do | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
is add in the facial features, just like this one. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
We've got the eye and we've also got these cool gills. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
I wanted mine to have a sweet, cool design, | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
so I started with some really sharp angles. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
All I'm creating is a very urban, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
cool, street-looking eye. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
And then for the gills, I wanted to match those up | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
with some really sharp-looking gills. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
When you've got that drawn out, use this as our template. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
Cut all these pieces out and transfer them to some foam. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
I've got my black foam eye and got the white bit behind. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
So we're going to glue our black eye down to our white piece behind. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:30
So you're going to need two of those. Now you've got your two deadly eyes. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
Cool, right? | 0:11:33 | 0:11:34
Now we need to glue them down to the hoodie, one on each side. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
Now we're going to glue down our gills. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
So I've got three gills for each side. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
Now for the deadly teeth. Start with the red piece of foam. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
We're going to create a gum and teeth sandwich. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
So we've got red gums, white teeth. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
And then on the other side, we've got more red gums. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
Now we have to glue it together. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
I'll make my teeth different sizes. A few short ones, a few long ones, | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
but all deadly sharp. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
You've got a line of gnashers there. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
OK. We're going to glue this inside the hood now. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
Glue the middle to the top of your hood. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
Once that's secure, start gluing down the gums. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
That's your blacktip shark hoodie all finished, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
complete with blacktip fin, eyes, gills and those deadly teeth. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:21
Make sure you give it a try at home. Now, I'm off for a bit to eat. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
'The coolest DIY we've ever done. Back to the Big Art. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
'So, what do you think so far? | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
'I reckon it's going to be great.' | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
Now the plastic's nice and soft, I'm just pushing down through the lines. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:38
And I'm just going to do the same with the rest. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
'I love this!' | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
That's another Deadly Art finished, and they look great! | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
But for me, it's the head. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:49
The way we melted the plastic around the eyes and gills, | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
-it makes them really cool textures. -I love the sheer size of our sharks | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
and the fact we made more than one of them surrounding us, | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
just like when Steve came face-to-face | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
