I'm Steve Backshall. And this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
I'm lucky to travel the world, tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
But in this show, my artists take my Killer Moments... | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
You'll pick up tips, tricks and techniques, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37

The plains of Africa may be known for incredibly fearsome felines. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
The cat family. The lions, the leopards. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
But another predator found there is perhaps even more efficient, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
and actually comes from the dog family. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
This is the African hunting dog. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
African hunting dogs form packs | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
that could be 40 animals strong. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
But it's the lead pair who take charge of running the pack, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
and they hunt using teamwork. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
Their scientific name means "painted wolf," and you can see why. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
They look like a mix of a wolf and a dog. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
The markings down their back are unique to each individual. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
They can hunt prey much larger than they are. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
Antelope, zebra, wildebeest. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
They can reach 60 kilometres an hour. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
But it's their stamina that really sets them apart. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
I'll explain more later. First, here's today's Deadly Art team. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
I'm Jo. I'm painter and a general mess maker. | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
I'm Michelle, and I love working with different materials. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
I'm all about getting stuck in. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
The Deadly Art team are always up for a challenge. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:11
Here are today's Killer Moments to inspire their art. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
The dogs can chase their prey down for miles and miles, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
surrounding or ambushing them. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
They're very efficient predators. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
An unbelievable amount of hunts result in success. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
Time for some more Deadly Art. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
I love that this is the "painted wolf." | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
Perfect for Deadly Art. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
The way they run in packs, chasing their prey, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
makes a great Killer Moment. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
A dramatic, comic book, action-packed painting would be great. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
-Sounds good. -Let's do it. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
A comic book tells a story. Each part is in a different box. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
Our three canvasses each will represent | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
different parts of our story. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
But it's not always in a straight order. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
We'll start here with the first canvas, move here, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and finish here for the end. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
I'm starting on the first canvas, the hunting pack. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
They'll be silhouetted against a moody purple sky. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
That'll be the ground. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
That, the sky. Let's start on the first dog. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
Our second canvas is all drawn out. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
A close-up portrait of our hunting dog. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
Next, I'll add in the vibrant-coloured sky | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
like in comic books. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
Let's see our three blank canvasses | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
evolve into fantastic Deadly Art. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
'Let's head over to Africa, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
'where the Deadly 60 crew and I were looking for our very own | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
'African Hunting Dogs.' | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
If we're to find wild dogs, it'll be like this. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
Oh, look at that! | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
Oh, hippos are back! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
This is beautiful. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
A herd of elephant, drinking at the water. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
There's some real youngsters with them. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
We saw pretty much | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
every species of animal you can find here, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
but no dogs. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:22
'We were unlucky in South Africa, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
'but this footage shows why they're incredible predators. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
'Working as a team, they locate their prey.' | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
Their camouflage lets them get close, but, unlike the cats. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
they don't hope to pounce on their victim. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
They're happy for the prey to run. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
The teams spread out, and the chase begins. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
Their incredible powers of endurance soon become apparent. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
Bodies adapted to run in the ferocious heat of the savannah, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
they can chase prey for up to four hours | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
and can reach an awesome speed of nearly 50 kilometres per hour. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:04
They are the true terminators of the animal world, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
never stopping. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
Their prey finally succumbs. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
And that death-dealing dog bite | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
makes short work | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
of flesh and bone. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
A super-athletic display of strength and stamina. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
Let's head back to the Deadly Art studio now. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
It's great to see Jo and Michelle painting. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
Classic art skills, Deadly style. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
The silhouettes really work against this colour. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
It creates drama. Which is great, as we're telling a story. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
The purples look great, | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
and set the scene in our hunting dog artwork. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
The leg's finished. I'll fill in the rest of the fur with block colour. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:55
Now YOU can get involved. Jo will show you a Deadly Doodle. | 0:05:55 | 0:06:00
I'm going to show you how to draw and paint | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
this African hunting dog Deadly Doodle. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
We'll start with some basic shapes. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
My first one is a circle, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
near the centre of the page. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
Off the top of that, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
round circles. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
Then a baguette, coming out the top. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
Then, a rounded triangle, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
for its nose. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
Then, another triangle, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
coming off that, for its mouth. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Now, we'll do a teardrop shape, upside down, coming from those eyes. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
Then, from the top of your baguette, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
go all the way down to a point at the bottom, like that. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
That will create the dog's head. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
Then for those huge ears. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
Big, round circles. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
Now for those eyes, | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
which are two diagonal lines, with circles underneath them. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
Two more lines, up from the nose. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
That's the basic shapes. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
Now with the black marker pen. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
Just going over those lines, and then back around. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
to make his snout. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
Following those lines up to the nose | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
and give it a bit more shape. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
Colour that in. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
Nice black, wet nose. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
Now, lots of shaggy lines, to make him really furry. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:34
More shaggy lines. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
That ruff around his neck. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
That amazing shaggy fur around his head. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
I'm going over those guide lines for the ears. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
A little definition on the inside. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
Now for those eyes. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
A nice dark pupil. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
Give him a bit of a bottom lip. Colour his mouth. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
And that's the doodle done. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
I'll give him some colour. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
I'll start with this dark blue paint. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
I'll, really roughly, paint him in. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
And give him a bit of shading inside his ear. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
Now, I'll take some yellow paint. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
As he's so shaggy, I'm being really rough with the paint. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:20
Still a bit of shading. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
There you have one African hunting dog. Deadly! | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
The dog looks so beautiful! | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
How did some of you get on? | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
We went to Port Talbot on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
Here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
THEY SHOUT | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
I'm Charlie, and this is my African hunting dog. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
Hello, my name's Megan. This is my African hunting dog. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
My favourite bit was drawing the eyes. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
They look good on the African hunting dog. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
They look BRILLIANT! Keep on doodling. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
Time to colour in that fierce-looking face. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
I've just finished this dog's mouth. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
On to an even bigger mouth. Check out those teeth! | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
This is the final canvas. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
As you can see, the African hunting dog is fierce! | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
I better get on with the canines. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
We'll leave Jo painting. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
Michelle has a super DIY for you. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
I'll show you how to a make a deadly African hunting dog head. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
Believe it or not, this is made | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
from an old shoe, some foam, and some fur. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
With your shoe, get permission first. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
I've grabbed the tongue from the inside of the shoe, | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
brought it to the outside, and stuck it down to the edges. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
This will act as our nose, later on. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
Next, I have some foam. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
I've traced round the outside of the shoe | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
and cut a hole in the middle. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
You just put your shoe back in the hole. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
This acts as our framework for the hunting dog's head. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
Obviously, we need a bit of fur on the face. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
I have some nice brown fur here. With the same technique, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
cut a hole in the middle, and this will fit securely | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
on top of the foam. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
We have a nice "M" shape. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
The same as the one on here. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
Later, our eye sockets will fit in between. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
To make it come to life a bit more, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
I've got some black fur and cut it into a "U" shape. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
It looks like a beard. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
This really helps with the tones of fur on the dog. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
Another distinctive marking is this black strip | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
at the top of the forehead. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
This will stick right here. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
Once that's stuck down, it looks like this. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
I admit it doesn't look very deadly yet, | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
so we'll start adding in all the deadly features. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
To create your ears, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
draw out a nice, large teardrop shape. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
Do the same with your fur. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:17
For the inner part of the ear, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
I have lighter brown fur. Stick it on. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
Make another, and attach. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
Your face is really coming together, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
but it's all about the deadly details. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
So, let's stick on some eyes. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
I have a polystyrene ball, cut in half. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
I'm blending this up. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
We're going to draw a large circle in the centre. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
Then, do a smaller circle | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
inside that one. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
Colour it in. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
There we go. One deadly eye. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
We'll stick them on. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
There we go. This guy has really mad eyes! | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
Next, we need to do the eyelids. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
Once you've stuck the eyelids on, to bring the nose to life a bit more, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
stick it on the tongue of your shoe. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
In the holes where the laces were, | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
I'll thread some pipe cleaners through | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
both the holes. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:13
Because pipe cleaners are bendy, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
you can mould them. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
I know what you're thinking. We need some nice, sharp teeth. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
These are in zigzag shapes. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
You have some glue along the top. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
Stick those in. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
It's really coming to life now. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
There's one final thing to put on it. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
That's a nice, large pink tongue. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
Here you have your seriously deadly African hunting dog head. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:43
There we have it. A DIY from an old shoe. Good stuff! | 0:12:43 | 0:12:47
Back to the Big Art. They've finished. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
I love this Deadly Art as it tells a story, | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
and the dogs look super-fierce. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
For me, the contrasting colours look so vivid. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
They'll look great, hung together later. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
It's nearly time for the Big Reveal. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
I asked the team to recreate these killer shots | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
and turn it into art. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
Let's look at the finished result. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
The art team set out to make a comic book | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
based on the hunting technique of these incredible dogs. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
They've done it! | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
This could be one of the fiercest paintings we've done yet. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
That dog looks ferocious! | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
It really shows up the attitude, the style, | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
endurance and persistence of the hunting dog. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
Nice work. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
What an incredible creation. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
We'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
