'Monitor lizards are Jurassic, quite literally. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
'Their ancestors rubbed noses with dinosaurs 100 million years ago. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
'What's allowed these extraordinary creatures | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
'to survive on earth for so long? | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
'They're hard as nails, with an incredible array of weapons. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
'They can climb, they can swim, they can run, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21

They're scared of absolutely nothing. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
'Another Deadly Art challenge for today's team. Let's meet them.' | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
And I'm up for today's Deadly Art. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
'Mike and Michelle represent the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
'who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
'Here are the killer shots to inspire the artwork.' | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
They're cheeky, fearless and they've got a strong, bulky body. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
And their skin, it's a lovely scaly pattern with loads of texture. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
-This is going to be fun. -You know it! | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
'Time for some more Deadly Art.' | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
Thanks, Michelle. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Our monitor lizard is going to be huge. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
So you need to cut it out of loads of sections of polystyrene. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
So we've got our monitor lizard cut out in a template, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
now I just need to attach it. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
That's the head and body. Check out this tail. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Look how long he's going to be! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
'While Mike and Michelle get on, let's take a look at the time | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
'I travelled to Australia with the Deadly 60 crew. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
'I was about to come face-to-face | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
'with their fiercest reptile.' | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
It was thought until very recently there was only | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
a couple of lizards in the world that were truly venomous. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
But it turns out that this guy here | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
has truly venomous spit. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
And, er...if I got bitten, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
it would not be a good day for me. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
I can almost smell your breath from here, mate. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
He can smell yours as well, Steve. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
He's just snuffling around with his tongue in the leaf litter. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
His tongue just flicked all up my arm. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
Around here, reptiles really are the top predators. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
The crocodiles, monitor lizards, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
they kind of take the place of the lions of the African plains. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
He's a living dinosaur. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
With a venomous bite, a whip for a tail | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
and tearing talons. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32
'Incredible! Let's head back to the Deadly Art studio | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
'to see how the Big Art is getting on. Lots of stones?' | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
When all our pebbles are put together, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
they look like the scaly skin of our lizard. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
We want to capture that in a mould. This takes a while to set. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
Once it has done, you can pull the silicone away from the pebbles | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
and you're left with an amazing textured mould. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
Once this is all pulled off, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
the finished result looks like this. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
It's fantastic! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Next up, I need to brush a layer of latex over the top of this mould. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
Once the latex has set, we'll be able t pull it away | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
and we'll be left with a beautiful pebbly skin. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
'Wow! What a great technique | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
'to create rough, scaly monitor lizard skin.' | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
I've made a start cutting out our monitor lizard. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
I'm using hot wire to cut all around our template. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
Once the pieces are cut out, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
we can put them together and shape them. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
'It's so cool seeing polystyrene models shaped with hot wires. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
'But our artists are professionals. Don't try anything | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
'you see them do in the Big Art challenges. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
'Well, it's all on track, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
'so Mike's going to show you a Deadly Doodle.' | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
I'm going to show you how to draw this deadly monitor lizard. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
As always, you start with simple shapes. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
We're going to start with a circle for the head. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
Then I'm going to draw his mouth. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
I'm just going to make a cone coming off the head. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
For the body, we want him looking like he's lying really flat. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
So we're going to draw a diamond coming out... | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
from the back of his head. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
Now for the legs. So there's one leg that's tucked up behind his head. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
Draw a circle for his paw. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
There's one out to the side. A big paw there. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
There's one tucked up over here | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
and there's another one coming down. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
And it also has a big paw. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
Now, for the tail, I'm going to start at this back leg... | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
and come in a really big, curving line. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
Like a big road, it's going to start small | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
and get bigger as it comes back around. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
OK. That's your pencil sketch. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
Grab a black marker and start with all the details. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
Work from the tail forward. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
Go back over the tail, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
wrap it around to the leg. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
The top of the tail, keep going over your line, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
but this time, go back over, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
all the way down for your belly. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
Draw in that back leg, move over to this back leg | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
and go back over that oval. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
Draw the back side of his belly here, | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
then draw in his big paws on the back. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
Monitor lizards have massive claws at the end of their paws. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
So we'll colour those in as we go. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
Now we're going to go back over this oval for the front leg. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
And this time, draw your paw even bigger because it's closer to us. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
Look at those sharp claws. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
We'll draw in part of his neck. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
Draw another front leg. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
A big paw again. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
Monitor lizards are really strong, so I'll give him muscles on this arm. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:06
Colour in your claws again. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
Deadly! | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
Now for the head. Start with the neck. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
Wrap that around to the mouth. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
Come around again for the other side. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
Now we'll draw in that forked tongue just sticking out to the side. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
Now for those menacing eyes. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:33
Mark out where they go. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
Just like that. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:38
Draw them like that to make them look deadly. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
Two C shapes inside. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
Then give him some angry eyebrows. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
Split his head down the middle. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
To make him even more deadly, add some wrinkles around his eyes. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
Oh, yeah! Add in that nose. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
And two nostrils. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
One very deadly monitor lizard. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
'A full-on, realistic monitor lizard. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
'How did some of you get on drawing this doodle? | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
'We went to Glasgow on a Deadly Day Out. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
'Here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.' | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
ALL: Deadly! | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
Here is my Deadly Doodle of a monitor lizard. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
I'm not normally very good at drawing. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
I think it's turned out really well. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
I'm David and this is my Deadly Doodle! | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
First of all, I thought it was going to be pretty tricky, | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
but when I got to the marker, it got easier and easier. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
'Loving your lizards! | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
'Now let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.' | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
We've used smaller bits of poly on this awesome monitor lizard | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
to make up the legs and feet. I've got the last foot here. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
Just needs a final bit of sanding, then I'll pop it in position. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
The skin's looking good over here. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
When the latex is set, it just peels away from our mould. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
Have a look at that. Beautiful pebbly skin. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
The great thing about a mould is we can make loads! | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
I'll take these over and start layering them onto our lizard. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
-'Love that bubbly texture!' -Those look amazing! | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
-It looks great, doesn't it? -I'll pop the tail in, then give you a hand. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
'Let's leave Mike cracking on with this fantastic Big Art. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
'Michelle has a great DIY you'll want to try for yourself.' | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
Because I'm making the skin on our giant lizard, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
I'm going to show you how to make that lovely scaly skin | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
on your very own monitor lizard. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
The Doodle has been transferred onto a large piece of foam board. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
First, make yourself a textured roller out of corrugated cardboard. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
It's really simple to make. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
All you need to do is grab yourself the inside of a tape roll | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
and cut out of cardboard two circular shapes. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
To get them the right size, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
just draw around the inside of your tape roll. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
These circles just fit on either side, | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
and then you need to get a long strip of corrugated cardboard | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
to fix around the outside, like that. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
I'll show you how to use this later. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
First, we need to add colour to our lizard. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
I'm using yellow, but you could use any colour you like. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
Lizards have wonderful markings, so with my yellow paint, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
I'm going to do some stripes going all the way across the body. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:16
'You must have adult supervision and wear protective gear | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
'if you're using spray paint.' | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
So now I've got my yellow as an undercoat, | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
I'm going to go over it in black paint and then roll through it. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
Now, a tip is to take it section by section. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
Once you've painted a section, | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
you need to go over it with your roller straightaway. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
It's almost like a tractor wheel. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:43
As you can see, I'm just following the lines all the way up. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
You've got the yellow undercoat popping out against the black. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
'Keep the wheels steady and apply carefully. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
'Great textures!' | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Once all your rolling's done, fill in the claws in black. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
So now I want to add some more detail to the lizard's face. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
For this, we've scored around the eyes, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
and all I'm going to do is pop them out with a scalpel. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
But you could also use scissors. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
'You must get an adult to do this bit. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
'Scalpels are dangerous.' | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
To make the eyes look more deadly, I'm colouring the iris red. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
Now it's starting to look really deadly. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
And the pupil black. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
Check that out! I'm using the same technique for the nostrils. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
Finally, we can't forget the lizard's tongue. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
I've cut out a piece of foam and all I'm going to do | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
is stick it underneath. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:17
And there you have it. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
Your very own deadly monitor lizard. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
'A great technique with corrugated cardboard. Give that one a go. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
'Back to the Big Art. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
'And our big monitor lizard is looking fantastic.' | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
The skin has been applied. Now it's all about the painting. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
Shading's really important | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
when it comes to making our monitor lizard look more realistic. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
We're doing lighter colours for the underbelly | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
and working to darker shades on the top, which I'm doing now. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
'That's it. All the stages are complete.' | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
There's a realism to our lizard. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
Those textural tones make it come alive. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
We made a real confident lizard. He's on the prowl. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
Nothing's going to touch him. Nothing's going to get in his way. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
'It's nearly time for the big reveal. I asked the Deadly Art team | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
'to recreate these killer shots and turn them into art. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
'So let's take a look at the finished result. Look at that! | 0:13:15 | 0:13:21
'It just looks like a massive monitor lizard | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
'has wandered right into the Deadly Art studio. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
'It has the long, whip-like tail at the back | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
'and the long tongue at the front. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
'I love how wrinkly the skin is around the joints, | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
'and the claws are huge! | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
'Polystyrene as the texture is perfect for the skin | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
'of this fabulous scaly reptile. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
'Nice work, team!' | 0:13:41 | 0:13:42
What an incredible creation! | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
