My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:020:00:04

I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:070:00:10

In this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...

0:00:130:00:16

..and turn it into art.

0:00:190:00:21

'We'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:220:00:24

'Along the way, you'll get to pick up tips, tricks and techniques

0:00:260:00:29

'so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:290:00:31

'This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.

0:00:330:00:36

'Coming up on Deadly Art,

0:00:410:00:43

'I'm nose-to-nose with today's lethal beast.'

0:00:430:00:46

If I got bitten, it would not be a good day.

0:00:460:00:48

'The deadly artists make another cool, killer work of art.'

0:00:480:00:52

Nothing's going to get in his way!

0:00:520:00:54

'And we'll show you how to draw another Deadly Doodle.'

0:00:540:00:57

Today's Deadly Art animal is the monitor lizard.

0:00:580:01:02

'Monitor lizards are Jurassic, quite literally.

0:01:020:01:06

'Their ancestors rubbed noses with dinosaurs 100 million years ago.

0:01:060:01:10

'What's allowed these extraordinary creatures

0:01:100:01:13

'to survive on earth for so long?

0:01:130:01:15

'They're hard as nails, with an incredible array of weapons.

0:01:150:01:18

'They can climb, they can swim, they can run,

0:01:180:01:21

'they have very, very sharp teeth, sharp claws and a whip-like tail.'

0:01:210:01:25

They're scared of absolutely nothing.

0:01:270:01:29

'Another Deadly Art challenge for today's team. Let's meet them.'

0:01:290:01:33

Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist.

0:01:330:01:35

And I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:350:01:37

I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials.

0:01:380:01:42

'Mike and Michelle represent the Deadly Art team,

0:01:420:01:44

'who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:440:01:47

'Here are the killer shots to inspire the artwork.'

0:01:470:01:50

They're cheeky, fearless and they've got a strong, bulky body.

0:01:540:01:58

And their skin, it's a lovely scaly pattern with loads of texture.

0:01:580:02:01

-This is going to be fun.

-You know it!

0:02:010:02:03

'Time for some more Deadly Art.'

0:02:030:02:06

Thanks, Michelle.

0:02:060:02:08

Our monitor lizard is going to be huge.

0:02:080:02:11

So you need to cut it out of loads of sections of polystyrene.

0:02:110:02:14

So we've got our monitor lizard cut out in a template,

0:02:160:02:19

now I just need to attach it.

0:02:190:02:20

That's the head and body. Check out this tail.

0:02:200:02:23

Look how long he's going to be!

0:02:240:02:27

'While Mike and Michelle get on, let's take a look at the time

0:02:270:02:30

'I travelled to Australia with the Deadly 60 crew.

0:02:300:02:33

'I was about to come face-to-face

0:02:330:02:35

'with their fiercest reptile.'

0:02:350:02:37

It was thought until very recently there was only

0:02:370:02:39

a couple of lizards in the world that were truly venomous.

0:02:390:02:42

But it turns out that this guy here

0:02:420:02:45

has truly venomous spit.

0:02:450:02:48

And, er...if I got bitten,

0:02:480:02:51

it would not be a good day for me.

0:02:510:02:54

I can almost smell your breath from here, mate.

0:02:590:03:03

He can smell yours as well, Steve.

0:03:030:03:06

He's just snuffling around with his tongue in the leaf litter.

0:03:070:03:12

His tongue just flicked all up my arm.

0:03:120:03:14

Around here, reptiles really are the top predators.

0:03:140:03:19

The crocodiles, monitor lizards,

0:03:190:03:21

they kind of take the place of the lions of the African plains.

0:03:210:03:25

He's a living dinosaur.

0:03:260:03:28

With a venomous bite, a whip for a tail

0:03:280:03:31

and tearing talons.

0:03:310:03:32

'Incredible! Let's head back to the Deadly Art studio

0:03:320:03:36

'to see how the Big Art is getting on. Lots of stones?'

0:03:360:03:39

When all our pebbles are put together,

0:03:390:03:41

they look like the scaly skin of our lizard.

0:03:410:03:45

We want to capture that in a mould. This takes a while to set.

0:03:450:03:48

Once it has done, you can pull the silicone away from the pebbles

0:03:480:03:51

and you're left with an amazing textured mould.

0:03:510:03:55

Once this is all pulled off,

0:03:550:03:57

the finished result looks like this.

0:03:570:04:00

It's fantastic!

0:04:000:04:02

Next up, I need to brush a layer of latex over the top of this mould.

0:04:020:04:06

Once the latex has set, we'll be able t pull it away

0:04:060:04:09

and we'll be left with a beautiful pebbly skin.

0:04:090:04:12

'Wow! What a great technique

0:04:120:04:14

'to create rough, scaly monitor lizard skin.'

0:04:140:04:16

I've made a start cutting out our monitor lizard.

0:04:160:04:19

I'm using hot wire to cut all around our template.

0:04:190:04:22

Once the pieces are cut out,

0:04:220:04:24

we can put them together and shape them.

0:04:240:04:26

'It's so cool seeing polystyrene models shaped with hot wires.

0:04:310:04:35

'But our artists are professionals. Don't try anything

0:04:350:04:39

'you see them do in the Big Art challenges.

0:04:390:04:42

'Well, it's all on track,

0:04:460:04:47

'so Mike's going to show you a Deadly Doodle.'

0:04:470:04:51

I'm going to show you how to draw this deadly monitor lizard.

0:04:510:04:55

As always, you start with simple shapes.

0:04:550:04:58

We're going to start with a circle for the head.

0:04:580:05:01

Then I'm going to draw his mouth.

0:05:010:05:03

I'm just going to make a cone coming off the head.

0:05:030:05:05

For the body, we want him looking like he's lying really flat.

0:05:050:05:09

So we're going to draw a diamond coming out...

0:05:090:05:13

from the back of his head.

0:05:130:05:16

Now for the legs. So there's one leg that's tucked up behind his head.

0:05:160:05:19

Draw a circle for his paw.

0:05:190:05:22

There's one out to the side. A big paw there.

0:05:220:05:25

There's one tucked up over here

0:05:250:05:29

and there's another one coming down.

0:05:290:05:32

And it also has a big paw.

0:05:320:05:34

Now, for the tail, I'm going to start at this back leg...

0:05:340:05:38

and come in a really big, curving line.

0:05:380:05:41

Like a big road, it's going to start small

0:05:410:05:44

and get bigger as it comes back around.

0:05:440:05:46

OK. That's your pencil sketch.

0:05:460:05:49

Grab a black marker and start with all the details.

0:05:490:05:51

Work from the tail forward.

0:05:510:05:54

Go back over the tail,

0:05:540:05:56

wrap it around to the leg.

0:05:560:05:58

The top of the tail, keep going over your line,

0:05:580:06:01

but this time, go back over,

0:06:010:06:03

all the way down for your belly.

0:06:030:06:06

Draw in that back leg, move over to this back leg

0:06:060:06:10

and go back over that oval.

0:06:100:06:12

Draw the back side of his belly here,

0:06:120:06:15

then draw in his big paws on the back.

0:06:150:06:18

Monitor lizards have massive claws at the end of their paws.

0:06:200:06:24

So we'll colour those in as we go.

0:06:270:06:30

Now we're going to go back over this oval for the front leg.

0:06:350:06:39

And this time, draw your paw even bigger because it's closer to us.

0:06:390:06:43

Look at those sharp claws.

0:06:450:06:47

We'll draw in part of his neck.

0:06:470:06:49

Draw another front leg.

0:06:510:06:54

A big paw again.

0:06:540:06:56

Monitor lizards are really strong, so I'll give him muscles on this arm.

0:07:010:07:06

Colour in your claws again.

0:07:060:07:09

Deadly!

0:07:100:07:12

Now for the head. Start with the neck.

0:07:130:07:17

Wrap that around to the mouth.

0:07:170:07:19

Come around again for the other side.

0:07:210:07:24

Now we'll draw in that forked tongue just sticking out to the side.

0:07:260:07:30

Now for those menacing eyes.

0:07:320:07:33

Mark out where they go.

0:07:330:07:36

Just like that.

0:07:370:07:38

Draw them like that to make them look deadly.

0:07:380:07:42

Two C shapes inside.

0:07:420:07:44

Then give him some angry eyebrows.

0:07:440:07:47

Split his head down the middle.

0:07:490:07:51

To make him even more deadly, add some wrinkles around his eyes.

0:07:510:07:55

Oh, yeah! Add in that nose.

0:07:550:07:58

And two nostrils.

0:07:580:08:00

One very deadly monitor lizard.

0:08:000:08:03

'A full-on, realistic monitor lizard.

0:08:030:08:06

'How did some of you get on drawing this doodle?

0:08:060:08:09

'We went to Glasgow on a Deadly Day Out.

0:08:090:08:11

'Here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.'

0:08:110:08:13

ALL: Deadly!

0:08:160:08:18

Here is my Deadly Doodle of a monitor lizard.

0:08:180:08:22

I'm not normally very good at drawing.

0:08:220:08:24

I think it's turned out really well.

0:08:240:08:26

I'm David and this is my Deadly Doodle!

0:08:260:08:29

First of all, I thought it was going to be pretty tricky,

0:08:290:08:33

but when I got to the marker, it got easier and easier.

0:08:330:08:36

'Loving your lizards!

0:08:360:08:38

'Now let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.'

0:08:380:08:41

We've used smaller bits of poly on this awesome monitor lizard

0:08:430:08:46

to make up the legs and feet. I've got the last foot here.

0:08:460:08:49

Just needs a final bit of sanding, then I'll pop it in position.

0:08:490:08:53

The skin's looking good over here.

0:08:530:08:55

When the latex is set, it just peels away from our mould.

0:08:550:08:59

Have a look at that. Beautiful pebbly skin.

0:08:590:09:03

The great thing about a mould is we can make loads!

0:09:030:09:05

I'll take these over and start layering them onto our lizard.

0:09:050:09:08

-'Love that bubbly texture!'

-Those look amazing!

0:09:080:09:11

-It looks great, doesn't it?

-I'll pop the tail in, then give you a hand.

0:09:110:09:15

'Let's leave Mike cracking on with this fantastic Big Art.

0:09:150:09:18

'Michelle has a great DIY you'll want to try for yourself.'

0:09:180:09:21

Because I'm making the skin on our giant lizard,

0:09:210:09:24

I'm going to show you how to make that lovely scaly skin

0:09:240:09:28

on your very own monitor lizard.

0:09:280:09:30

The Doodle has been transferred onto a large piece of foam board.

0:09:300:09:34

First, make yourself a textured roller out of corrugated cardboard.

0:09:340:09:37

It's really simple to make.

0:09:370:09:40

All you need to do is grab yourself the inside of a tape roll

0:09:400:09:43

and cut out of cardboard two circular shapes.

0:09:430:09:46

To get them the right size,

0:09:460:09:48

just draw around the inside of your tape roll.

0:09:480:09:51

These circles just fit on either side,

0:09:510:09:53

and then you need to get a long strip of corrugated cardboard

0:09:530:09:57

to fix around the outside, like that.

0:09:570:10:01

I'll show you how to use this later.

0:10:010:10:03

First, we need to add colour to our lizard.

0:10:030:10:05

I'm using yellow, but you could use any colour you like.

0:10:050:10:08

Lizards have wonderful markings, so with my yellow paint,

0:10:080:10:12

I'm going to do some stripes going all the way across the body.

0:10:120:10:16

'You must have adult supervision and wear protective gear

0:10:170:10:21

'if you're using spray paint.'

0:10:210:10:23

So now I've got my yellow as an undercoat,

0:10:270:10:29

I'm going to go over it in black paint and then roll through it.

0:10:290:10:32

Now, a tip is to take it section by section.

0:10:320:10:34

Once you've painted a section,

0:10:360:10:38

you need to go over it with your roller straightaway.

0:10:380:10:41

It's almost like a tractor wheel.

0:10:410:10:43

As you can see, I'm just following the lines all the way up.

0:10:440:10:48

You've got the yellow undercoat popping out against the black.

0:10:480:10:52

'Keep the wheels steady and apply carefully.

0:11:110:11:14

'Great textures!'

0:11:140:11:17

Once all your rolling's done, fill in the claws in black.

0:11:260:11:29

So now I want to add some more detail to the lizard's face.

0:11:320:11:36

For this, we've scored around the eyes,

0:11:360:11:38

and all I'm going to do is pop them out with a scalpel.

0:11:380:11:41

But you could also use scissors.

0:11:410:11:43

'You must get an adult to do this bit.

0:11:430:11:45

'Scalpels are dangerous.'

0:11:450:11:48

To make the eyes look more deadly, I'm colouring the iris red.

0:11:480:11:52

Now it's starting to look really deadly.

0:11:520:11:56

And the pupil black.

0:11:580:12:00

Check that out! I'm using the same technique for the nostrils.

0:12:040:12:08

Finally, we can't forget the lizard's tongue.

0:12:100:12:13

I've cut out a piece of foam and all I'm going to do

0:12:130:12:16

is stick it underneath.

0:12:160:12:17

And there you have it.

0:12:170:12:20

Your very own deadly monitor lizard.

0:12:200:12:23

'A great technique with corrugated cardboard. Give that one a go.

0:12:230:12:26

'Back to the Big Art.

0:12:260:12:28

'And our big monitor lizard is looking fantastic.'

0:12:280:12:31

The skin has been applied. Now it's all about the painting.

0:12:310:12:34

Shading's really important

0:12:340:12:36

when it comes to making our monitor lizard look more realistic.

0:12:360:12:39

We're doing lighter colours for the underbelly

0:12:390:12:41

and working to darker shades on the top, which I'm doing now.

0:12:410:12:44

'That's it. All the stages are complete.'

0:12:500:12:52

There's a realism to our lizard.

0:12:570:12:59

Those textural tones make it come alive.

0:12:590:13:01

We made a real confident lizard. He's on the prowl.

0:13:010:13:05

Nothing's going to touch him. Nothing's going to get in his way.

0:13:050:13:08

'It's nearly time for the big reveal. I asked the Deadly Art team

0:13:080:13:11

'to recreate these killer shots and turn them into art.

0:13:110:13:15

'So let's take a look at the finished result. Look at that!

0:13:150:13:21

'It just looks like a massive monitor lizard

0:13:210:13:23

'has wandered right into the Deadly Art studio.

0:13:230:13:26

'It has the long, whip-like tail at the back

0:13:260:13:29

'and the long tongue at the front.

0:13:290:13:31

'I love how wrinkly the skin is around the joints,

0:13:310:13:34

'and the claws are huge!

0:13:340:13:36

'Polystyrene as the texture is perfect for the skin

0:13:360:13:39

'of this fabulous scaly reptile.

0:13:390:13:41

'Nice work, team!'

0:13:410:13:42

What an incredible creation!

0:13:420:13:45

Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY

0:13:450:13:47

and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
