This is Deadly Art. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
so you can make some art yourself. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
This is no ordinary art show. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
This is Deadly Art. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Coming up on Deadly Art, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
I dive deep with a surprisingly deadly marine predator. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
The Deadly artists push art to the max. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
And we've got a very cool deadly doodle to show you. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
Today's Deadly Art animal has up to 21 arms and could be | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
one of the most destructive animals I've ever dealt with. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
This is the crown of thorns starfish. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
The spines that cover the starfish can deliver | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
a venomous toxin, which, if I were to stand on it, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
would be incredibly painful. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
But that's not what makes them deadly. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Imagine an army of mini killing machines, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
travelling over a coral reef and eating it as they go, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
turning this | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
into this. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Their killing method is one of the most grotesque I have ever seen. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
I'll tell you more later on, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
but first of all, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
let's meet the artists who are waiting in the Deadly Art studio. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
I'm Nicola. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
I'm a power tool queen. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
Nicola and Michelle represent the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
And these are the killer shots to inspire their artwork - | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
their lethal spines and their strength in numbers | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
mean that these lethal killing machines are simply unstoppable. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
You don't expect a starfish to be so destructive. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
They're like an army crawling across the seabed, destroying the coral. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
We should represent that in the artwork. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
-So steel for the seabed and foam for the starfish. -Let's get on with it. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
'Time for some more Deadly Art.' | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
We've got a sheet of steel. This is going to represent our ocean bed. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
The perfect backdrop for our story. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
We'll have the destroyed coral down here, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
the army of starfish here making their way up here. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
-The starfish are on a mission of destruction. -That's our seabed. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Let's make the starfish. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
'I think it's really important that art can relay an important theme, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
'the destruction of coral by the deadly crown of thorns.' | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
For the starfish, we're using expanding foam. This is amazing. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:53
As I spray it into the shape, it expands. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
-How cool is that? -As it expands, it sets. We're making loads of them. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
When they're dry, we'll paint them. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
'Great foam spray! | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
'There are some superb techniques in this challenge. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
'While they get on, on Deadly 60, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
'I went diving in the beautiful waters of Mozambique. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
'I was on the lookout for the deadly crown of thorns.' | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
Look at this! | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
This is exactly what I was hoping to find! | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
This big, bizarre, pin-cushion-like creature in front of me | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
is a starfish. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
But it's a special kind of starfish. I'm not going to pick this one up. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:43
It's a crown of thorns. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
All these spines covering the arms have venom | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
and certainly, this far underwater, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
the last thing I'd want would be to get nailed by this. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
It potentially could kill me. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
However, that's not the reason why this, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
the crown of thorns starfish, is going on the Deadly 60. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:11
'No, I've not gone completely bonkers. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
'This is a starfish, and if you think starfish | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
'are just like star-shaped rocks, take a look at them speeded up. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
'Our starfish, the crown of thorns, hunts and kills coral. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
'They creep up on their defenceless prey on tube-like feet. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39
'To eat, they throw up their stomach lining out through their mouths, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
'over the living coral. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
'That's the yellow stuff that looks a bit like cabbage. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
'Its stomach contains highly toxic digestive juices | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
'which dissolve the coral, killing it. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
'So the starfish pulls in its stomach | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
'and using those tube-like feet, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:07
'moves on to feast on a fresh part of the coral reef. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
'Just one of these deadly critters is destructive enough, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
'but if there's lots of them, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
'they can devastate a once lush coral garden, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
'reducing it to a brittle, lifeless skeleton. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
'Let's check out how our Deadly Art team are getting on.' | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
We've decided to introduce a bit of pop art theme. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
That's why I'm using all these fabulous colours. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
I've got pinks, yellows. It's going to be great. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
'Amazing colours.' | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
The crown of thorns has loads of venomous spines. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
We're making them out of silicon. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
'Those spikes look great, but there's a lot to do. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
'Michelle's going to take time out from the Big Art now | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
'to show you a Deadly Doodle.' | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
This is a crown of thorns starfish. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
I'm going to show you how to draw one. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
I'm going to draw three large ovals in the middle of your paper. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:13
One large one in the centre and then inside that, a smaller one. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
Inside that one, a really small one. Now I've got my three ovals, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
I'll draw lines connecting the inner circle to the outer circle | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
and these lines are going all the way round the starfish. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
I've got my lines drawn in. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
Now to build up our starfish, I'm drawing a curvy line up | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
and back down again, like a V shape. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
And repeating this on the other ones. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
When I get to the back, I'm bringing the line up and out, instead of in. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:50
Like that. And coming back round the other side of the starfish, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
for my bottom line, I'm just drawing a line up to connect it. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
All the pencil lines are drawn in, so I'm changing to the pen. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
I'm just going over these original lines, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:05
bringing them out with the black marker. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
At this front bit, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
I'm drawing an oval shape cos this is the leg right in front of you. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
And the same for this one as it's right at the front. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
As I'm going round the back, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
I'm just following the lines round, making them nice and bold. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:23
Now I'm going to go down each leg, drawing a central line. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:35
To really bring the starfish to life, I need to add the thorns. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:43
These are just short vertical lines. You can add as many as you like. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
Just make sure you keep these short lines pointing up. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:56
There's a lot of thorns! | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
I'm going to bring the centre of the starfish together | 0:07:58 | 0:08:03
by joining up all those lines. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
In the centre, I'm adding some more thorns. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
For the final part, all you need to do is rub out the pencil lines. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:17
Without those pencil markings, | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
you can see the lovely shape of the starfish. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
Brilliant! There you have your crown of thorns starfish! | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
'Brilliant, Michelle! How did some of you get on drawing this doodle? | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
'We went to Port Talbot in Wales | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
'and here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.' | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
You go up like that and down. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
ALL: Deadly Art! | 0:08:41 | 0:08:46
ALL: This is my crown of thorns starfish. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
I liked drawing the spikes on my starfish. It was easy. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:53
I like the way we drew the ovals and it suddenly turned into a starfish. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
This is my doodle. I liked drawing the circle and the spiky legs. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
I enjoyed watching the picture slowly turn into a starfish. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
'They all look brilliant. Keep on doodling! | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
'Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
'I'm looking forward to this bit.' | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
I'm finishing off this section of the seabed. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
It's going to represent the beautiful coral. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
The sad side of our story is that the starfish destroy that coral. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
That's my job right now. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
'Remember, Nicola is a trained professional. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
'Don't even think about attempting anything you see in this Big Art. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:37
'Smouldering! Welding is a great way to demonstrate the destroyed coral. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
'Now Nicola's got a starfish DIY for you to make at home.' | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
These deadly creatures are simple to make. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
You can make your own crown of thorns starfish | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
by getting hold of some basic kitchen sponges. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
Stick two together, end-to-end, using double sided sticky tape. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
This will give you the perfect length | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
for each leg of your starfish. Two sponges makes two legs. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:09
Draw a line from corner to corner and cut through it. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:14
Mind your fingers. Get an adult to help you. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
'You can use scissors, but be careful.' | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Discard one of them and we'll concentrate on making one leg. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
This is where your sculpting skills will come in handy. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
We want our leg to look a bit more natural, | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
so trim off the corners of each side, so it becomes rounded. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:35
When your leg is rounded, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
you'll need to make a little point at the end. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
You also need to take off the corner from the top edge. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
They need to fit together. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
By taking away this corner, they'll fit nice and snug. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
Don't throw these away. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
We'll use them to create this detail down the centre of each leg. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
We need to make a slit up the centre, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
leaving a section at the top and a section at the bottom. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:09
I'm going to use a blue off-cut from one I made earlier. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
I've stuck two together | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
and the friction of the sponge will keep this in place. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
Feed it in, all the way down and trim it off. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:23
Now it's time for those deadly spikes! I'm using pipe cleaners. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
Cut them into small segments | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
and fold over the top to remove any sharp edges. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
'You must bend the pipe cleaners over, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
'otherwise you might hurt yourself.' | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
Using a scalpel, make some small holes all the way down, | 0:11:41 | 0:11:46
each side of the leg. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
You must get an adult to help you. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
Then pop each one into place and once again, | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
the friction of the sponge will help keep it secure. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
And there it is, one starfish leg. Time to finish it off. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
I've got six more and this will fit securely into place | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
with some double sided sticky tape. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
If you put magnets on here, it'll go anywhere, like the real thing. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
Finished! Now it's time for our starfish to join his deadly friends. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:18
'Good work, Nicola. Back to the Big Art and it's looking good. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:25
'That's it. They've reached the finish line.' | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
I love the bright, funky colours of the starfish. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
That pop art theme works well. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
Especially in contrast to that industrial metal. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
Welding it was cool! | 0:12:54 | 0:12:55
We've captured the deadly nature of those crown of thorns starfish. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
Good work! | 0:12:59 | 0:13:00
'It's time for the big reveal. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
'I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
'and turn them into art. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:07
'Let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
'Wow! Look at all those colourful starfish! | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
'The starfish are all colours of the rainbow, | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
'but on the flipside they are killing machines on the hunt. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
'You can sense this army of starfish laying waste to a coral reef. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:25
'From the dark remains of the coral to the blazing display | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
'of the starfish, this is a kaleidoscope of marine munching! | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
'Nice work, team! Art doesn't get any deadlier than this!' | 0:13:34 | 0:13:39
That was a sublime work of art. Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
