This is Deadly Art! | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments... | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
..and turn it into art. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
'And we'll reveal another unique creation. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
'Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
'tricks and techniques, so you can make some art yourself.' | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
'This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art!' | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
'Coming up on Deadly Art... | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
'I travel to Mexico and come face to face with a giant of the deep.' | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
Amazing! Absolutely amazing! | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
'My artists recreate another killer moment.' | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
With the red against the black, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
it really makes this huge monster stand out. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
'And you can make some deadly art at home too.' | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
Today's creature from the deep is one of the most fearsome | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
and deadly killers in the ocean. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Nicknamed "the Red Devil," | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
these killer molluscs are like something out of a sci-fi movie. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
Meet the Humboldt squid. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
These creatures can be two metres long, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
which is longer than I am tall. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
But it's not just their size that makes them deadly. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
They have suckers ringed with razor-sharp teeth, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
and a beak that can bite clean through bone. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
They're totally fearless and have been known to attack sharks | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
and even to threaten divers. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
What will our artists make of this monster? Let's meet them. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
I'm Jo, I'm a painter... | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
..sculptor... | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
..and a general mess maker! | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
I'm Nicola. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
I'm an ice-sculptor, a sand sculptor, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
and a power tool queen. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
Jo and Nicola are representing the Deadly Art team, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
who are always up for a challenge. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
And this is the unusual killer moment I've chosen | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
to inspire our artists. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
'When I got a little bit too close to this squid for its liking, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
'it squirted a cloud of defensive ink right at me!' | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Well, this squid is like a sea monster from a sci-fi movie. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
We're going to do a painting, but it's going to be enormous. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
Yes, really bright, really bold and, as with all sci-fi movies, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:26
let's use special effects on that killer moment. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
'Great! Time for some more Deadly Art.' | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
'I haven't got a clue what all that equipment's for. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
'Can't wait to see this one take shape. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
'On Deadly 60, the crew and I travelled to the Sea of Cortez | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
'in Mexico, to meet these incredible but seriously scary squid.' | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
During the day, these squid are about 200 metres plus underwater. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
But it's dusk, the sun's going down, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
and they'll be coming closer to the surface to feed. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
They're going to see if they can pull something in. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
And when they do, we'll see our first squid. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:04
'I have so much respect for these fishermen, dragging up squid | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
'with just a line, a lure and a whole lot of sweat.' | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
We've got something big coming in. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
I'm just so excited! | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
How much line has he put in here?! | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
I see it! I see something! I can see a light shape coming up towards us. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
Here it comes. Oh, look at that! Yes! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
Yes! Wow! Look at the colours pulsing down the body. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:45
I can't believe it! | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
There's the beak, he's pointing out to us there. That's the danger end. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
I can't believe he's letting fingers get that close to it! | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
Look at that, it's like a giant parrot's beak. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
It can cut straight through flesh and even bone. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
It would easily take off one of my fingers. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Right, look down the length of all these tentacles. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
Each one has sucker-cups running all the way down the length of it, | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
and every one of those sucker-cups is wringed with razor-sharp teeth. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
Look at that. They're like the teeth of a piranha. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
They'll slice through flesh, | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
and they use those to catch a hold of slippery sardines | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
and small fish that they're going to be eating, and draw them in. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
I don't believe it. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:30
Our next step has to be get in the water | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
and get close to them in their own environment. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
'We returned the squid to the sea, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
'and you'll see just how frightening they can be later on. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
'How are Jo and Nicola getting on with the Deadly Art version?' | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
I started by sketching in the squid. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
I want him to look dramatic and full of movement. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
His tentacles are going to come out from the beak and go everywhere. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
Look at this gorgeous red I've mixed. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
This is going to be the base coat. Let's start getting those arms in. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
'Our squid will look striking with that vivid palette.' | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
I'm creating a gloomy atmosphere using this dark, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
murky paint I've mixed up. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:06
And that's going to create a real monster-of-the-deep feel. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:11
This squid is really taking shape, and with the red against the black, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
it really makes this huge monster stand out. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
'This canvas is going to look great. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
'I'm really excited about seeing the finished result later. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
'Jo's going to take a break. She's got a Deadly Doodle for you.' | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
I'm going to show you how to draw this Deadly Doodle | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
of a Humboldt squid. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:33
We're going to start off with our pencil, | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
make a triangle in the top corner of the page, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
and then two bowed lines coming down into the middle. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
And two ovals for its eyes. Now for its arms. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
'A squid has eight arms. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
'The diamonds represent the clubs on the two longer feeding tentacles. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:55
Now I'm, with my black pen, just going over all of my lines. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:02
These arms that are curling round like that, they're a bit tricky. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
So you go up like this and around. Stop. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
Come to here, and you're just fattening them up. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
Then the diamonds... | 0:06:17 | 0:06:18
And then, I'm going to bring round the tentacles to the body. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:25
We need two more, a bit further in the background. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
Let's put those deadly eyes in, make him look really fierce. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
And all we're doing for the suckers is tiny little squiggly circles, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
all the way along the underside of his arms, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
and then onto the diamonds. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
Bit of definition. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
And there you have it! The deadly Humboldt squid. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
Is that deadly enough for you? | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
'Well done, Jo. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:55
'We visited Crawley on a Deadly Day Out. Here's how your squid looked | 0:06:55 | 0:07:00
'when some of you drew them in the Deadly Art tent.' | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
So I'm going to go directly over this line... | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
like that. The tentacles or the arms... | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
ALL: Is that deadly enough for ya?! | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
This is my squid doodle! | 0:07:12 | 0:07:13
I enjoyed doing my squid doodle cos it was really fun for me. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
This is my squid doodle! | 0:07:17 | 0:07:18
I really enjoyed it. Jo's a really good artist | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
and she really helped me with it. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
-I'm Ellie. -And I'm Elizabeth. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
BOTH: And we've just drawn a squid doodle. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
I'm Megan and this is my squid doodle. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
'Those squid look sensational. Keep practising your doodles. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
'Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio, and our vibrant canvas!' | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
So, the base coat of our giant squid is complete. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
And I've used some different shades of red here, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
to give some shadows and some shading to the arms and tentacles, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
to really show off that three-dimensional effect. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
And now, using this peachy, skin colour, I'm adding on the suckers. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:57
'The colours are so striking. I love the tentacles!' | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
I'm using these amazing ultraviolet paints, | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
which is our science-fiction special effect. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
Look at this. When you shine the ultraviolet light on it, it glows. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:12
-Who-o-o-a, that's amazing. -Looking good. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
'What a great idea! | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
'In Mexico, we weren't sure how giant a squid we were going to find. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:21
'So, to protect ourselves from their sharp teeth and beak, | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
'we needed chain mail suits, like underwater Medieval knights. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
'But we found a giant!' | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
Look at it now, covering the camera! | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Oh, look at the colour change there! | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
Bright red, look at the pulsing there! | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
'Even though this squid seems calm, | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
'you can never be too careful with a fierce predator like this. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
'Good job safety diver Scott was on hand.' | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
It's actually...AGH! Dear me, this...A-AGH! | 0:08:50 | 0:08:55
The strength of the beak! | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
It just actually bit me through the chain mail suit! | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
It really pinched my arm! | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
You can see how easy it would be for a creature like this | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
to power itself away using that siphon. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
But also, to create that smokescreen that's going to make it | 0:09:16 | 0:09:21
almost impossible for another predator that uses sight to hunt by | 0:09:21 | 0:09:26
to find the Humboldt squid. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
That really is one of the weirdest, | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
most beautiful creatures I've ever seen. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
OK, Scott. I'm just going to release it, now. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
Amazing! Absolutely amazing! | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
'So beautiful as it swims off. Now, ever wished you had squid tentacles? | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
'Nicola has a dazzling DIY for you.' | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
Check this out. Giant squid arm. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
I'm going to show you how to make one of these. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
Take a piece of foam tubing, and some wire. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
Fold the end over and post it in like that. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:12
And then spiral the wire... | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
Get an adult to help you for this bit. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
This will enable you to bend | 0:10:17 | 0:10:18
and pose your squid arm any which way you like. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
Next, take a big triangle of foam... | 0:10:21 | 0:10:26
'You can get foam from any craft shop.' | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
We're going to fix this tubing all the way down, leaving a section | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
at the top and a piece sticking out at the bottom for a handle. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
'You can use craft glue, but it just takes a little longer to dry.' | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
When that's firmly in position, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
wrap this edge around to meet this one, | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
and fix it using some tape. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
When that's secure, finally pull this flap down. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
Now we're ready to make our sucker section. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
For that, use a big piece of foam and draw on a big triangle. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
And cut it out. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
'Be careful when you use scissors.' | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
Next, mark on where you want your suckers to be. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:26
And then using these suction cups, | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
which you can get from any DIY store... | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
'Make sure an adult does this section.' | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
..we'll attach those by cutting out a small diamond | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
on each of these marks. Pop one of these into each hole, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:42
flip it over, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
and with a little bit of glue fix them into position. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
When you've done that all the way down, | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
it should look like this. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
Take your squid arm and glue this over the tape. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
Finished! | 0:12:10 | 0:12:11
And now, if you make two of them, you can have your own pair of squid arms! | 0:12:11 | 0:12:17
'Great fun! I'll persuade the Deadly 60 team to make some! | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
'Back to the Big Art. It's all coming together nicely.' | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
OK, the squid is almost complete, except for one secret ingredient. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
In this airbrush is invisible, ultraviolet paint, | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
and when we switch the ultraviolet light on, all will be revealed. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
-'What a superb special effect!' -OK, Nic! | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
Yes, let's check it out. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
That UV paint really brings that killer moment to life. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
Those vibrant colours on that huge body make it stand out | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
against the dark depths. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:50
I'm so happy, those suckers look really dramatic. Totally deadly. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:55
'It's nearly time for the Big Reveal. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
'I asked the team to recreate this killer moment, and turn it into art. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:02
'Let's take a look at the finished result. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
'That is one of the most breathtaking pieces | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
'we have ever had on Deadly Art. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
'The colours are so vibrant against that black background. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
'It's just like the pulsating red devil of the deep | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
'against the darkness of the deep sea. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
'Oh, what a transformation! | 0:13:20 | 0:13:21
'When the UV lights are switched on, it really comes to life. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
'That ghostly glow is just transfixing, | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
'tendrils of ink just billowing out through the water. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
'Brilliant! Well done, Team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.' | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
What an incredible creation! Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY, | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art! | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
