Oh, slugs give me the heebie-jeebies.

They're so slimy.

I need a way to let the slugs know

they are not welcome in the vegetable garden.

I actually know something that might help get the slugs out your garden.

Eggshells.

Eggshells?

Yes, sprinkle broken eggshells round the plants you want to protect.

Those slimy slugs won't shimmy across anything sharp and pointy

like broken eggshells. They have very sensitive tummies.

A barrier to stop the slugs getting to the lettuces in the first place.

I'm trying to keep the slugs away from my lettuces.

They're completely destroying them.

Do you know anything about slugs?

I know they have 2,700 teeth.

Well, that would explain how they can eat so much lettuce.

Grubby suggested I use crumbled eggshells

to keep the slugs away.

That's not a bad idea,

but my favourite way to make the slugs stay away is...

the common nasturtium.

It's a super-stinky plant.

I like the smell of nasturtiums.

Slugs don't agree. They smell those and they're soon to skedaddle.

That's a great idea, Ken.

I can plant nasturtiums around the lettuces

and it will make an invisible, smelly fence.

To keep the slugs away.

I'm on slug watch.

I know slugs do an important job.

Slugs rot things like wood, break them down and turn them into soil.

But, when slugs eat the lettuces, slugs turn into pests -

big problem.

So, what to do about pests?

I like to shoo the pests away from the garden naturally,

making barriers or spraying the plants with natural sprays

like onion water, makes the plants taste yucky to the pests

and off they go.

Or maybe, I could give the slugs their own lettuce,

so they stop eating mine.

I don't think we should be feeding the slugs doughnuts. Over.

naturally.

Hmm, garden snails eating the vegetables.

Rolled-up wet paper makes a good trap...

..and so does milk.

That'll keep the pests away.

If I mulch around the lettuces,

it'll be really difficult for the slugs to just slide over it

and eat the juicy lettuce leaves.

Brilliant idea.

These eggshells really are sharp.

No slimy slug will get across this barrier.

This should definitely stop the invasion.

If they do get past the eggshells,

they won't get past the super-stink of the nasturtiums.

Or the spiky, mulching hay.

Or the doughnuts.

Sandpaper doughnuts.

You place this ring around the plant,

to protect the lettuce from the slugs.

They won't go near it. It would scratch their tummies.

Eugh!

The slugs can't get across the eggshells.

Too pointy.

Or going anywhere near the nasturtiums.

Too smelly.

And there's no way they're going

anywhere near the sandpaper.

There's just one more thing I want to check.

Oh, look, it's working.

They're only eating the lettuce I asked them to.

I don't mind if they eat that one.

Now there will be enough lettuces for sandwiches.

It's all about balance.

My best, worst bug is still a slug.
