Let's find out! | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Yeah! Yeah! | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
SHE LAUGHS Woohoo! | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Hello, I'm Maddy, and today I'm having a fun day out. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
I'm at a water park. | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
Have you been to a water park? I LOVE them. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
Playing in the different pools, splashing round, getting wet. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
Remember, you must never play near water without an adult. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
Slides are my favourite. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
But I love really big slides, like those ones. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
Do you know how a water slide works? | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
Can you see all that water coming down the slide? | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
The water helps to move you down and it also makes you go faster | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
and stops you getting stuck. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
But where does all that water come from and where does it go? | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Let's find out. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
When you go on a water slide, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
the first thing you need to do is climb to the top. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Now, this is the top of the slide. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
And can you see there's lots of water running down it? | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
This is what's going to help me slide down. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
But first, I need to sit down, like this. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
All I need to do is push off. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
But first, I'm going to put my special camera on my head | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
so you can see exactly what it looks like as I go down the slide. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:19
Are you ready? | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
Whoo! | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25 | |
Yeah! | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27 | |
Yay! | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30 | |
'The water is going really fast - and taking me with it.' | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
SHE CHUCKLES | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Oh, no! Oh, no! | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
SHE SCREAMS | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
'It's good my special camera is waterproof!' | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
That was so much fun. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Did you see how the water was carrying me down the slide? | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
The water is always flowing downwards | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
and when you go on a slide, you go down too. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
And that's because of something called gravity. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
Gravity is what makes things fall to the ground. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
It's what keeps us and everything around us firmly on the ground | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
instead of floating around in the air. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
Things like this ball. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
What do you think will happen when I let go of this ball? | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
Will it go up, or will it go down? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
What do you think? Let's go. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
The ball fell down and that's because of gravity. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
But if gravity pulls things down, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
how does the water get to the top of the slide? | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
To find out, I need to get dried. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
Ta-da! | 0:03:41 | 0:03:42
Come with me. I've got something exciting to show you. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
Right now we are underneath the swimming pool. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
Not very many people get to come down here. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
It's called the pump room, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
and it's full of pipes and machines called pumps. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
A pump is a machine that moves liquids, like water, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
from one place to another through pipes | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
like these all around me. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
These pumps are working all the time to pump water | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
to all those slides around the park. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
And this is how a water pump works. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
Underneath the pool is a tank called the sump. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
The water is sucked up from the sump and into a big pipe. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
It's a bit like sucking a drink with a straw. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
The water travels along the pipe to a big spinning wheel. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
The wheel spins the water around very fast | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
and pushes it up another pipe. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
The water is pushed up and up until it reaches the top of the slide. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:53
Now gravity makes it fall down the slide, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
and when it gets to the end, it whooshes into the swimming pool. | 0:04:56 | 0:05:01
At the side of the swimming pool is a hole called an inlet. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
Some of the water goes into the hole so that the pool doesn't overflow. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
It's a bit like the hole on the side of your bathtub. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
This water goes through a filter, which cleans it, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
and then along the last pipe into the sump, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
where it's ready to be used again. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
How interesting is that? | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
So this pipe here is the one that sucks the water up from the sump, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
which is just behind this wall, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
and inside this blue bit of machinery is the spinning wheel | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
which whizzes the water round really fast | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
and pushes it up to the top of the water slide. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
It looks a bit like a blue snail, doesn't it? | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
Let's see what happens when Mike turns the pump on. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
MACHINERY WHIRS Ooh! | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
Listen to the sound of the pump. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
Wait a minute, there's another stage. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
MACHINERY WHIRS | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
Ooh! That's the sound of the spinning wheel whizzing round | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
and all that water being pushed up to the top of the slide. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
Can you hear? | 0:06:09 | 0:06:10
MACHINERY WHIRS Zzz! | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
Being underneath the swimming pool was so exciting. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
I loved seeing all of that water rushing out of the slide too. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
What was your favourite bit? | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
Do you remember the name of the machine | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
that sends water around the water park? | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
That's right, it's the pump. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
Did you hear the sound the big spinning wheel inside the pump made? | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
MACHINERY WHIRS | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
And did you see how the water flowed down the slide when I was on it? | 0:06:40 | 0:06:45
SHE SCREAMS | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
So, the next time you go on a water slide | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
you'll know just how it works. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
There are lots of different places you can go to on a fun day out. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
But there's always one thing I like to have as a special treat. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
Do you know what it is? | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
It's ice cream. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
Hello. Can I have a strawberry ice cream with sprinkles, please? | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
-Of course you can. -Thanks. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
-Ooh! Thank you. -You're welcome. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
Ooh, what a treat! | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
What's your favourite ice cream? | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
Mine is strawberry. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
But do you know what this bit is called? | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
This is the ice cream cone, and it's a really clever shape | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
cos it holds the ice cream whilst you're eating it | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
and then you can eat the cone afterwards. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
But do you know how an ice cream cone is made? | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
Let's find out. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
An ice cream cone gets made here, in a huge ice cream cone factory. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
The ingredients that make up the ice cream cones | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
have to be carefully weighed. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
This big machine is called a mixer. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
Ice-cold water and sugar are put inside and mixed together | 0:08:18 | 0:08:23
until the sugar completely dissolves. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
Wow! | 0:08:27 | 0:08:28 | |
Oh, it smells so sweet. It smells a bit like popcorn. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
Now other ingredients are added, and the main ones are vegetable oil, | 0:08:36 | 0:08:41
which your family might use, | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
and flour, just like you use to make a cake. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
But flour can get a little bit messy. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
In it goes! | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
There's flour absolutely everywhere. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
'Next, it's time for the vegetable oil. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
'Here it comes!' | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
MACHINERY WHIRS Whoa! | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
Listen to that sound. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
It's churning and gurgling like the inside of a volcano. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
MIXTURE GURGLES In the middle of the mixer, | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
there's a metal arm that is spinning round and round. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
Let's get a closer look with my special camera. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
The mixture is getting lovely and smooth. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
And the metal arm makes sure that it's light | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
and has lots of air in it. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
'When the mixing is finished, it's poured into another container.' | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
SHE LAUGHS | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
The finished mixture is called batter, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
and it's just like the batter you use to make pancakes. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
Look at the way it's just splatting into this big tank. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
And now we're off to the cone-making machine. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
Beep, beep! | 0:10:03 | 0:10:04
Our tank of batter is hooked up to the machine | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
and we're ready to go. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
The batter is pushed along this blue pipe | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
and into this metal moving arm, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
and at the end is a nozzle which squirts out five blobs of batter | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
onto this hot moving plate. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
The five blobs of batter look a little bit like | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
a flower at the beginning. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
The moving hotplate is really special | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
cos it has lots of little squares cut into it | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
and that's what gives the ice cream cones that crisscross pattern | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48
and it's called a waffle pattern. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
Now, watch how a lid closes down on each blob of batter | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
and squashes it into a pancake shape. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
It's ready to be cooked. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
And that happens in here. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
The moving plate loops around this hot oven, | 0:11:06 | 0:11:10
giving each circle of batter a quick bake. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
And here are the cooked circles. They look like pancakes, don't they? | 0:11:22 | 0:11:27
At the moment, the pancakes are still warm and bendy. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:33
But the moment they start to cool down, they go hard. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
So this machine has to twist them into a cone shape really quickly | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41
otherwise they'll cool down and it will be too late. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
The pancakes are twisted into shape | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
and they pop out of a chute at the end of the machine. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
Now the cones are being pushed onto this conveyor belt so they | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
can cool down and eventually be put into packets at the other end. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:05
And here is a finished ice cream cone. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
It looks great, doesn't it? | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
Look! You can even see that lovely waffle pattern. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
All that's missing is some ice cream. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
Some of the cones are made extra special by decorating them. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:30
There are lots of different types of ice cream cones. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
Some are dipped in chocolate and covered in sherbert. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
Some are covered in sprinkles. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
And now they're ready to eat for a special treat. Yummy! | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
What was your favourite bit about seeing how ice cream cones are made? | 0:12:47 | 0:12:52
Can you remember the name of the mixture | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
used to make ice cream cones? | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
Yes, it's called batter. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
Did you hear the sound the mixer made? | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
MACHINERY WHIRS | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
And did you see the batter being squirted onto the hotplate? | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
So the next time you go to a water park | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
and have a go on a water slide, you'll know how it works, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
and if you have an ice cream as a special treat afterwards, | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
you'll know how the cone was made | 0:13:27 | 0:13:29
and how it gets that lovely waffle pattern. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
This is very yummy, and I'll see you next time. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
