I know just the book.

-Is everybody settled down and ready to listen?

Story Time!

And all of you, sitting down comfy and ready to listen?

-We're ready.

-Today, we're going to read a poem

and it's called Captain Scratch

by Charles Hodges.

The pictures are by Adam Stothard.

Now Captain Scratch is a pirate cat who sails the ocean blue

He helps any animal down on its luck because it's the right thing to do

He stopped to rescue an octopus He bandaged a dolphin's tail

When it was stranded and stuck on a beach

He rescued a great humped-back whale.

That's really kind.

-Especially for a pirate.

-Yes.

Captain Scratch is very kind, isn't he? Helping everyone.

But one night a storm blew up It tore his sails to shreds

"Oh, no!" cried the captain, "Now we're stuck."

But then the sea animals said, "You helped us when our luck was down

"So now we're helping you.

"We'll give you a tow to an island we know.

"You'll find lots of treasure there too."

-What's the treasure going to be?

-Gold and jewels.

Or carrots.

They pulled the ship through rolling waves

Until they sighted land

They dug without rest Till they found a great chest...

of sardines Then they danced on the sand.

The end.

It was good the way Captain Scratch helped the sea animals

-and then they helped him.

I'm digging for the treasure.

I can see the buried treasure.

We've found it.

Let's do a treasure dance

with Captain Scratch.
