-Is everyone settled down and ready to listen?

It's story time.

-And all of you? Sitting down comfy and ready to listen?

This story is called Too Busy For Birthdays.

It was written by Smriti Prasadam-Halls

and the pictures are by Anna Laura Cantone.

Trinny woke up early.

Today was no ordinary day.

Today was her birthday.

She sprang out of bed and raced downstairs,

ready for all her surprises.

Trinny burst into the kitchen.

She was sure Dad would have an excellent birthday surprise for her.

But no. Dad was just busy baking.

Ooh! I think I can see some birthday candles!

Oh, yes! Me too!

Trinny bounced into the lounge.

Her sister was bound to have a birthday surprise for her.

But no. Esther was busy painting.

Poor Trinny!

Trinny skipped into the garden.

Mum would have a birthday surprise for her.

But no.

Mum was just busy working.

"Never mind," thought Trinny.

"Gabe will have a birthday surprise for me."

And she ran down the lane to see her friend.

But no. Gabe was just busy doing music practice.

"Everyone's just too busy for birthdays!" sighed Trinny.

And slowly and sadly, she headed home again.

When Trinny got to her house,

everything seemed very still and very quiet.

Then, Trinny opened the front door.

"Surprise!"

yelled Mum and Dad and Esther and Gabe, jumping out.

Dad had baked a wonderful birthday cake.

Esther had painted a beautiful picture,

and Mum had blown up the best ever bouncy castle.

"Happy birthday, Trinny!" sang everyone,

as Gabe strummed his guitar.

"Did you think we'd forget your birthday?"

"What a brilliant birthday surprise!" laughed Trinny.

And she danced and bounced and ate cake

and bounced some more, all day long,

and so did everyone else.

After all, it had been a very busy birthday for everyone.
