Twinkle has been looking for our friends. Who has she found?

-'Look, there's Loopy.'

-'Yeah, Precious is there too.'

'So is Hip, he's bouncing on the trampoline.'

-'And where there's a Hip...'

-'There's always a Hop.'

-'Over there! There she is!

-'Building sandcastles.'

You're right. It's Loopy, Precious and Hip and Hop.

Oh, well done, Hip! You're bouncing!

-'We're going to have a story.'

-'It may be a bouncy-boingy one.'

-'It may be about learning something new.'

-'Yeah!'

I know just the book. Is everyone settled down and ready to listen?

-I'm ready.

-Ready.

And all of you? Sitting down comfy and ready to listen?

This story is called Not Today, Thank You,

and it was written by Gareth Edwards

and the pictures are by Susanne Baekby Oleson.

"Once in a forest, there was a hollow tree

"and inside there lived an owl who didn't like visitors.

"He had a comfortable room to sit in

"and a front door with a large door-knocker.

"But whenever Squirrel, Badger or Rabbit knocked on the door to ask

"if Owl would like some company, he would say, "Not today, thank you."

"Not today, thank you."

"One day, it began to rain in the forest. "I know," said Squirrel.

"Maybe Owl will let me shelter in his tree."

"She knocked on Owl's door.

"Who's that?" said Owl.

"Just Squirrel wanting shelter from the rain."

"Not today, thank you," said Owl.

"Next to Owl's front door was a big old toadstool

"so Squirrel sheltered underneath it like a spotty red umbrella."

-Oh, Squirrel won't get wet under there.

-No.

"Not long after, Owl heard another knock.

"Who's that?" "Just Rabbit wanting shelter from the rain."

"Not today, thank you," said Owl.

"Now it was pouring and the wind was blowing so Rabbit had to try

"and keep dry under the toadstool next to Squirrel.

"It was a bit of a squash. Pretty soon, Owl heard another knock.

"Who's that?" "Just Badger wanting shelter from the rain."

"Not today, thank you," said Owl.

"But now it was a storm and the wind was roaring.

"Inside his hollow tree, Owl shivered.

"Outside, Badger tried to squeeze under the toadstool

"next to Rabbit and Squirrel

"while the wind rocked the toadstool back and forth.

"You're too big," said Squirrel.

"There's not enough room," said Rabbit.

"Then all of a sudden, whoosh!

"A huge gust of wind blew the toadstool and the animals

"right out of the ground and straight through Owl's front door.

"Bup!

"Squirrel and Rabbit and Badger landed in a heap,

"right in the middle of Owl's carpet.

"What are you lot doing in here?" said Owl.

"Sorry," said Squirrel, Badger and Rabbit.

"At that moment, there was an enormous boom of thunder

"and all the animals leapt into Owl's armchair."

Oh! Boom! That made me jump!

"When it was quiet again, Squirrel and Badger and Rabbit peeked out.

"Would you like us to go?"

"But Owl realised, he didn't want to be on his own. "Not today," he said.

"And as the animals snuggled up safe and warm together,

"Owl whispered very quietly, "Thank you."

-"The end." Did you enjoy that story?

-Yes.

I liked how everyone ended up all warm and cosy.

Even though Owl said he wanted to be on his own at first.

-He liked having the others there after all.

-Now it's your turn.

-We're jumping in puddles.

-Now it's raining!

It's very windy and rainy.

-Let's shelter under the toadstool.

-It's a bit cold!

-Woah!

-The wind is blowing us about with Rabbit, Badger and Squirrel.

-Let's see if Owl is at home.

Let's knock on Owl's door.

-Is anyone there?

-Crash, boom!

-The lightning made me jump.

-Oh, no, look out!

-Has the thunder stopped?

-That lightning made my legs wobble.

Let's keep warm by the fire.

Aah.

Well done, everyone. Thanks for showing me the story.

Owl didn't want to ask his friends to come inside,

but when it thundered, he was glad they did.

A bit like me, but I'm glad I did ask for help bouncing on the trampoline.

You were really good at it once you learned how to do it.
