I crunched my carrot and made a wish!

Wow! Maybe it's a special carrot.

Yeah, a wishing carrot!

I've never heard of one of those before,

but who knows, it just might be.

Oh, yes, we could do that.

Come on, Twinkle, let's go and find Hip.

We'll need sand.

Have you found your pirate island yet?

No, the wishing carrot doesn't work.

Mm, I think I know what you need.

-All pirates need a parrot.

-Ha-ha! Twinkle, my own pirate parrot!

Maybe she knows the way to a pirate island.

These would make great pirate binoculars.

Twinkle, it's a pirate island!

-Or hidden treasure.

Who's ready for a story then?

Ready already, Driver Dan.

Ah-ha! I know just the book.

-Is everybody settled down and ready to listen?

-Yes.

And all of you? Sitting down and ready to listen?

Ready, Driver Dan.

This story is called Marat The Camel.

It was written by Georges Estephan

and the pictures are by Hatem Fathy Aly.

The oasis creatures were playing in the noon day sun.

"What fun it is to splash in the spring!" giggled the little camels,

kicking up the fresh water with their hooves.

They were so busy playing, they didn't notice

a new little camel, Marat, had arrived at the oasis.

Marat trotted over. "Hello there," he called cheerfully.

"My name is..."

But he didn't get any further, for the other camels squealed

and galloped to the other side of the water.

-Oh, that wasn't very friendly.

-No, it wasn't Hip.

"How strange," thought Marat.

He spotted a jerboa.

"Hello there," he began again.

"My name is..." But before he could finish,

Jerboa had scampered off into her burrow, squeaking, "Help!"

The same thing happened when Marat went to talk to Ibex

and to Lizard.

Finally, he gave up with a sigh and settled himself in a lonely spot.

-Poor Marat.

-Yes, poor Marat.

"I'm afraid it's a question of humps,"

said Falcon, the wisest creature in the desert, who had been watching.

He perched close to Marat.

"In these parts, camels only have one hump

"and you, my friend, have two.

"I'm sorry to say the other camels are afraid."

Marat was surprised.

"I guess they don't know how great it is to have two humps," he said.

"Great?" asked Ibex from behind a tree.

"Really?" murmured Jerboa, peaking out of her burrow.

"Why, yes," cried Marat.

My extra hump keeps me lovely and warm on cold nights.

"Oooh," cooed Lizard, creeping closer.

"And I can store twice as much food as you,"

said Marat to the little camels who were trotting over.

"Wow!" they gasped.

"You see, in the country I come from,

"all camels have two humps," said Marat.

Yes, camels with two humps live in a country a long way away

from camels with one hump.

That's right, Precious, a long, long way away.

That afternoon, the oasis creatures listened to

Marat's enchanting stories about the far off land he came from

and about the many other beautiful places he had travelled to.

That night, they dreamt of the desert sun,

of far off lands and of their new friend, Marat,

the two-humped camel.

-The end. Did you enjoy the story?

-Oh, yes!

No, thanks. I'd rather wish for a snack.

Ha, ha, ha!

-Hello, Lizard.

I'm flying like the falcon.

Me, too. Flappity flap!

We're moving like Marat.

Do a camel walk!

Time for bed.

Marat went on a long journey to the land with one-humped camels.

Hip went on a journey, too, all the way to Pirate Island.
