We're all ready, Driver Dan.

Hmm. What about...? Ah-ha!

I know just the book.

Is everybody settled down and ready to listen?

And all of you? Comfy and ready to listen?

'I'm ready!'

This story is called The Rolling Ball.

Rania Zbib Daher wrote it, and the pictures are by Manal Haddadin.

One day, Samir's grandfather came to visit. He had a gift for Samir.

It was a shiny green ball.

"Thank you, Grandad, it's great!" yelled Samir excitedly,

as he tossed the ball in the air and caught it again.

Ooh! A shiny green circle.

Well spotted, Sweetie!

That afternoon, Samir and his grandfather went to the playground.

Samir hugged his ball proudly. Then, he kicked it high.

So high, that it went flying over the wall!

It landed with a thud on the other side, next to a small, grey cat.

-GIGGLES

-Watch out, little cat!

The little cat peered curiously at the ball,

nudging it about with her nose,

and trying to hold it down with her paws.

Samir giggled and skipped through the gate to join the game.

But, as he reached them, the ball slipped away from the cat's paws,

and was off - down a grassy slope,

and straight into a muddy field full of fluffy sheep.

It was caught between the legs of the playful lambs,

who kicked it this way and that as they skipped about the field.

The shiny ball wasn't looking shiny any more.

BAA!

You're right - they're very fluffy sheep, aren't they?

Samir had almost caught up with it,

when the ball tumbled along to the riverbank,

and a fat little frog perched right on top of it. "Ribbit!"

Samir laughed out loud, and the sound startled the frog.

He hopped off quickly, and...plop!

The green ball bounced into the river.

Samir watched in disappointment as it floated away.

"That's it, I'll never get it back now!" he groaned.

Oh, no! It splashed away!

Just then, a fisherman and his son Walid came by in a rowing boat.

Walid plucked the green ball from the river.

The water had washed it clean, and it sparkled in the sunlight.

He held it up and waved to Samir. "Is this yours?"

Soon, the ball was safely back in Samir's hands.

"Thank you," grinned Samir. "Fancy a game?"

"Definitely!" cheered Walid.

"I love my shiny green ball," thought Samir,

as he kicked it to his new friend.

"But having someone to share it with is even better. Goal!"
