Hello, Hip and Hop. What are you looking for?

-He said he'd be back soon to play with us.

But he's been gone for ages!

Oh! Hi, everyone.

There you are! We've been waiting for you.

Oh. Whoops! I forgot.

Sorry. You see, I saw Tallulah, and, er, well, er...

-And she wanted me to tell everyone something,

but I can't remember what it is.

Oh, Loopy, you forgot again.

Oh, sorry, everyone. So, what game shall we play?

Ooo! I've got a great idea for a new game.

No. It's a game to help you remember things, Loopy.

Oh, brilliant! How do we play?

There are five things here. We're going to take one away

and you have to remember which has gone.

-Have a good look first.

Now, turn away. No peeping.

-You can look again now.

-What thing has gone that was there before?

Oh! I can't remember what the thing was.

-Would you like a clue, Loopy?

-Oh, yes, please, Hip!

Oh, it's no good. I just can't remember by myself.

I've been waiting for ages.

Is everybody settled down and ready to listen?

-Yes, thank you.

-Ready!

And all of you sitting down comfy and ready to listen?

Ready, Driver Dan.

This story is called, Brilliant Baisa.

It was written by Nathalie G Habib

and the pictures are by Michele Standjofski.

Sinjab Squirrel, Sammy Skunk and Baisa Beaver

took care of their comfortable cedar-tree home together.

Each morning, Sinjab scurried onto the forest branches,

giving them a shake and carefully collecting all the fallen acorns,

while Sammy swept the house clean with his bushy tail

and Baisa stored away the supplies.

I wish I had a big bushy tail like Sammy!

One sunny morning, Sinjab scampered home with a huge sack of acorns.

"Excellent," clapped Sammy.

"Now we must store them away."

"Oh," said Baisa. "Couldn't we just nibble a few now?"

"There'll be plenty of time for that later," chuckled Sinjab.

"We must finish the chores first.

"Your job is to make sure the acorns are put away in the storeroom."

"Yes, yes," said Baisa with a yawn.

"I'll just finish my little snooze first."

Ha-ha-ha-ha! I'm having a snooze, too.

Oh, Loopy!

That night, the wind picked up and howled through the trees.

Thunder and lightning lit up the sky.

Snow covered the whole mountain.

The next morning, Sinjab, Sammy and Baisa peered out at the forest.

"I won't be able to gather nuts," said Sinjab.

"Thank goodness we've got a big supply stored safely away."

"Oh, no!" cried Baisa, with a yell,

dashing to the storeroom.

"I forgot to put the nuts in the storeroom!"

Ha-ha! I wouldn't have forgotten.

All the acorns had blown away.

"But what will eat now?" cried Sammy, worriedly.

"We could gather fallen acorns from the mountain,

but we can't get there in this snow."

"I've got a brilliant idea," said Baisa.

She started carving away at a fallen branch with her strong front teeth.

The others watched as she worked. At last, she was finished.

Baisa had made a super sled.

"Wait here," she called, and off she sped.

All the way to the mountain.

It was very hard work collecting acorns

and carrying the heavy sack all the way back up the mountain.

But Baisa knew what she had to do.

"It's my fault we lost all our acorns," said Baisa to her friends.

"But I hope you'll help me eat these new ones."

Sammy and Sinjab couldn't believe their eyes

when they saw the enormous sack of delicious acorns.

"Thank you, Baisa," they cried.

"You're brilliant!"

It's a long way through the snow.

Now there's loads to eat.

We've got lots of acorns back.

I don't think Baisa will forget to put the acorns away again.

She could play the memory game like we did.
