Hi, I'm Amelia. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
Our class has two guinea pigs. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
They're called Angelina and Raphael. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
We look after them. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
They're so cute. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
We love them very much. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09

Hello, everybody. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
-ALL: -Hi, Ferne. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
That was such a fantastic song. I loved it. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
-Hi, Miss Smith. -Hi, Ferne. Would you like to meet | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
-our class guinea pigs? -Yes, please, that would be awesome. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
-Where are they? -We'll show you. -You'll show me? Thank you. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
-See you soon. -Bye. -Bye. Bye-bye. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
Look at these gorgeous guinea pigs. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
You girls are so lucky to have them in your classroom. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
-Do you like having guinea pigs? -Yeah. -Yeah. -Which one is Raphael? | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
The one with the hair fringe. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
He's got lots of hair. Angelina's the smooth one, and | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
-Raphael's the really big, fluffy one? -Mm-hm. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
They are absolutely gorgeous. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
Guinea pigs are part of the rodent family, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
like mice and rats, and they are some of my favourite animals. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
-Shall we get one out for a cuddle? -Come on out now. -Go. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
There we go. Hello. GUINEA PIG SQUEAKS | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
-Would you like to hold her? -Ah. -And I'll just close the cage. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
-Well done. -Nice girl. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
Wow, she is fantastic, isn't she? | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
Look how friendly she is. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
What is your favourite thing to do when you look after the guinea pigs? | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
-I love holding them. -I love feeding them. -Yeah. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Do you like feeding them? They love chewing on things, don't they? | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Is that guinea pigs chatting to you? | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
-Can I hold Angelina? -Yeah. -Well, they are looking fantastic, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
but I hear that sometimes someone has to come and visit them. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
-Who's that? -Vet Kate's coming. -Did you hear that, Angelina? | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
Vet Kate's coming to see if you're OK. Fantastic. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
GUINEA PIG SQUEAKS | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
This is vet Kate. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
She knew she wanted to be a vet | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
when she was five years old. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
She has once helped a very large swan. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
And when she treats ferrets, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
she finds them really smelly. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
-Morning, guys. -Hi, Kate. -Hi, Kate. -Hi. -It's really special | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
that you get to come to the school to check out the guinea pigs. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
-It's fantastic. -Oh, thank you for having me. It's really cool | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
-cos I can show you what I do. -Which guinea pigs should we start with? | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
-Angelina. -Angelina. -Good idea. -Fantastic. Oh, look at her. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
-Where do you need to start? -We're going to use this special torch | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
-to look into her eyes there. -Why do you use the torch? | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
So I can see right to the back of her eyes and make sure that she can | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
see me, and I'm looking to make sure there's no signs of infection, | 0:04:01 | 0:04:05
so sometimes they get like snotty discharge and crusty bits, | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
and soreness, so we can see that when we've a look. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
Her eyes are really clear, so now we look the nose for snot, to make sure | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
that that's nice and clean. Have a look at those big teeth. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
Wow. Can you see those teeth? They are massive. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
Wow. Rodents' teeth never stop growing, so that's why | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
they need lots of things in their cage that they can gnaw on. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
-So, Angelina's teeth are looking good. -Really, really good. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
Ears, OK. Again, we're looking for infection of sinus. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
Next up, we're going to use this. Do you know what this is called? | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
-A stethoscope. -That's right. This is a stethoscope. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
And I use this to listen to her heart and her lungs. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
HEART BEATS | 0:04:48 | 0:04:49
Guinea pigs have fast hard rates because they're little, but she's | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
nice and relaxed, and that's cool. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
Would you like to have a listen as well? Hear her heart there. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
-What does it sound like, Lily? -SHE TAPS RHYTHMICALLY | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
-It's really fast, isn't it? -I heard that. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Can you hear that? Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick... | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
How do you think her heart sounds, Emilia? Is it a healthy heart? | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
-Yeah. -I think it's a healthy heart as well. -Well done. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
So then, the next job on the list is to feel her tummy. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
What do you feel for in her tummy? | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
So, we're making sure she's comfortable, | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
and we're making sure that she hasn't got any food stuck. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
-She's got quite a chubby tummy, doesn't she? -She does yes, | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
but guinea pigs often do, so it's fine. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
And actually, although she's got a bit of extra, she's not too bad. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
-So she can have treats? -I think so. The next thing we've to do, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
and she may not like us doing this, but we've to flip over and just have | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
a very quick look at her tum-tum. We're checking to make | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
sure she's clean, so that's perfect. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
Angelina is looking great, and now it's Raphael's turn. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
She gets the same check over from Vet Kate. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Eyes. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58 | |
Nose. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00 | |
Teeth. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:01
Ears. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03 | |
Heart and lungs. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:04
And tummy. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:07
Is Raphael as chubby as Angelina? | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
She isn't as chubby, no. She's a nice weight. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
She's got lots more fluff, hasn't she? | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
-Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
That's why I love Raphael's fringe. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
Yeah, I love Raphael's fringe, too. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
She's got a tiny little bit of matted fur there, so we ought to | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
just help her out with that, and I think she could do with a claw clip, | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
but other than that, ten out of ten on the health front. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
-Ten out of ten. -Yay! | 0:06:33 | 0:06:34
SHE LAUGHS | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
Let me explain. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
Guinea pigs' nails grow just like ours. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
So, without regular trimming, it could lead to them overgrowing and | 0:06:40 | 0:06:45
curling into their foot pads, which could be very sore for them. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
Each nail has a blood vessel, known as the quick, which is pink or red | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
in colour. So it's important to let your vet or someone experienced trim | 0:06:53 | 0:06:58
your guinea pig's nails so they are always cut in the correct place. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
-Right, so it's nail clipping time. -Absolutely. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
So we're just going to take the very end off there, look. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
See, she's not bothered one tiny bit. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
So this isn't hurting Raphael at all. It's just like us | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
-getting our own nails clipped. -Good girl, Raphael. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
You can see this one here, girls, is actually quite curly. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
-Good girl. Good job, team. Excellent. -Well done. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
So her feet are looking a lot better, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
but there's one more thing Raphael that needs, isn't there? | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
Yeah. She has got a little bit of a hair disaster going on. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
Matting like this can be prevented by brushing long haired guinea pigs | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
every day, but today Kate is going to give Raphael a bit of a trim. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
So this is to make sure she doesn't get any poo or wee stuck in here. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:51
-It doesn't hurt at all. -She's making loads of noise, | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
but that's cos she's a guinea pig. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
This is just like us getting our own hair cut. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
-I'm just going to take that little one off as well. -Fantastic. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
-Good girl. -Raphael, that's all we were doing. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
Good job, Raphael. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:07
-Kate, how are the class guinea pigs doing? -I'm really pleased with them. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:12
While we take these guinea pigs for some much needed play time, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
let's see what else has been happening at Kate's vets. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
Back at the vet practise, Vet Kate and her team had a busy day. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
Betty the Jack Russell terrier was here for a check-up. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
George and Alfie the West Highland terriers were in | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
to have their teeth cleaned. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
And Charlie the black cockapoo was in for some tests. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
He had some blood samples taken before being reunited | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
with his owner, Ned. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:50
Lily and Amelia, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
I've had a wonderful time meeting you two and your gorgeous classroom | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
guinea pigs, Angelina and Raphael. I'd love to come back and see | 0:09:01 | 0:09:05
-how they're getting on. Would that be all right? -Yeah. -Yes. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
Thank you very much. I wonder what Rory's been up to today. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
HORN HONKS | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
This safari park near Stirling | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
is home to some fantastic birds of prey. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
Today I'm with head vet Paddy, as he checks up on some of these | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
magnificent animals. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
BIRD SQUAWKS | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
-Rory, this is Dominic, our keeper. -Good to meet you. -How's it going? | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
-And who is this? -This is Willow. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
-She's a six-year-old female lanner falcon. -She is an absolute beauty. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
Lanner falcons are found in Africa and Asia parts of Europe, | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
and they're among the fastest birds in the world. What are we going to | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
-be doing for this lovely lady today? -We're going to cope her beak so the | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
beak carries on growing, it's just like your fingertips and | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
-as that grows, it needs filing down. -Okey doke. So as you say, | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
birds' beaks keep on growing and in the wild they'd have rocks and trees | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
to rub their beak against and wear it down. What have we got to do? | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
We're going to put a hood on her so she believes it's night-time, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:19
-calm so she doesn't get bothered. -Great. -Dave's going to come across, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
-He's made sure she's restrained. -You're holding the wings tight, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
-so they don't jump out. -And I hold the head, keep the bottom part | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
of the beak closed and just file away. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
This doesn't hurt the bird. It's like getting your fingernails done. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
Paddy, how often would have to do this kind of thing on a falcon? | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
So it depends on what they're being fed, activity levels, so | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
there's no hard and fast rule about when you need to do it. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:49
Just need to keep an eye on them. And Willow seems really calm. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
-Is that your all good, Dom? -That's it, yeah. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:55
So just like in the wild, a nice little extra bit on the end there. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
-Paddy, are you quite happy? -Absolutely. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
Nicely shapen, so that should do her fine. We're going to go have a look | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
at a hooded vulture, to have a look at the feet and talons. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:10
Dom, you've got Kevin in your hands here. What's going on? | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
Kevin has got a small crack in one of his pads just under his toe. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
And what are you going to be looking for here, Paddy? | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
I want to see the crack is getting smaller and there's no | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
swelling or infection around the area. We're going to look underneath | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
and pull his talons out. Just to see. This cut is just on this toe. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
Just on the inside there. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:33
A couple of weeks ago, that was a little bit red and raw and that's | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
-now healing up quite nicely. -Great. So who are we going to look at next? | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
We're going to see the barn owl who has got a problem with his foot. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
-So who have we got in here then? -We have Nemo. He's our barn owl. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
-We're going to look at his foot. -Hello, Nemo. -I'm just going to put | 0:11:49 | 0:11:53
-him in a cloth to keep him nice and calm. -What are we checking for? | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
Nemo had a problem with one of the talons and unfortunately it | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
got really badly infected and the talon dropped off. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
We're just really checking to make sure that Nemo is comfortable and | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
that there is no swelling on the foot or any signs of any scabs | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
-or problems that, and everything is looking lovely. -And he's not going | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
-to suffer too much from lose that talon there? -No. If it was a back | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
talon like this one here then he might have a few issues perching, | 0:12:20 | 0:12:24
but at the moment, he's got the other two, which will act fine, | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
so he shouldn't have any problems. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
I have had an amazing time seeing all these birds of prey. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
-I think they're awesome. Thank you. -No problem. -You're welcome. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
Not long ago, I met Amelia, Lily and their class's pet guinea pigs, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
Angelina and Raphael, and I'm back to see how they're getting on after | 0:12:46 | 0:12:50
their visit from the vet. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:51
-Hi, Ferne. -Hi, Ferne. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
Hi, girls. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:00
-How are you? -Good. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
And how are these gorgeous guinea pigs doing? | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
They're looking really good. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
They are so good. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
They are looking wonderful. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
How are they since they got their nails clipped? | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
-They're good and it didn't hurt at all. -Great. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
Raphael was making lots of noise, but it didn't hurt and the hair | 0:13:17 | 0:13:21
-is looking good as well. -Yes. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
