Hello. My name is Duncan. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
This is my little sister, Floraidh. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
We live on a farm and have loads of sheep and lambs. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
I really like their woolly fur and their sweet faces. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
The lambs are so cute! | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
I really like stroking them. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
I love living in a farm | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
and helping out with the lambs every day. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
We put out fresh straw | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
to make it nice and cosy for them. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
When I grow up, I want to be a sheep farmer. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
-Hello, Rory. -Hello, Duncan. Who else have we got? Floraidh. Hiya. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
-Rebecca. -Hi, there. -And this must be Evan. Hi. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
Do you want to come see our lambs? | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
-I would love to. -Come on. -OK. -Let's go. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
-This is where the lambs live. -Oh, it's a big shed. -Yes. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
Oh, wow! | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
What cuties. Hello. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
So, do these lambs have names? | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
This one's Cherry, this one's Fluffy, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
and Sally, Bob, and this is Feather. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
-How old are your lambs? -Six weeks old. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Still quite young, aren't they? Yes. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
-What's your favourite thing about the lambs? -They're fluffy and also | 0:02:05 | 0:02:10
-they're very cute. -Oh, they are. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
What do lambs normally drink? | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
-Milk. -Absolutely right. Normally, lambs get milk from their mothers | 0:02:14 | 0:02:19
but if the mum has too many babies, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
she can't feed them all and we have to give them the bottle. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
-It's time to feed them. -Excellent. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Oh, look. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
She is thirsty. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
-She's guzzling it. -Look at her go! RORY CHUCKLES | 0:02:32 | 0:02:37
Oh, Sally is trying to get in on the action here. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
Good work. That's it, Sally. Oh, she's so cute. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
-The farm vet's coming to check the sheep and lambs. -Cool! | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
I've never met a farm vet before. This is going to be exciting. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
This is vet Alistair. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
He's been a vet for five years. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
He has looked after | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
red deer and stags in New Zealand, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
and treated lots of alpacas. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
-Hi, Alistair. -Oh, hi, Rory. Hi, Duncan. Hi, Floraidh. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
-How are you doing? -Good. -Excellent. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
What are you checking the sheep for? | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
-I'm checking this ram for hoof problems. -A ram is a male sheep, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
-isn't it? -That's correct. -I'll come and give you hand. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
-What are we looking at here? -So, Rory, as you can see, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
this hoof's overgrown around the edge. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
It's a bit untidy. If we clip a bit of this away, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
-it might make him feel a little bit better. -There we go. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
These are the tools I use, these clippers here, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
-and I'll just take away a little bit of this loose stuff. -OK. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
That's like our nails, right? | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
-Yes. It's very similar to clipping the nails. -Does it hurt the sheep? | 0:03:54 | 0:03:59
No. It doesn't hurt any more than cutting your own nails. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
If these bits got too overgrown, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
there's a chance infection could build up inside it. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
Hopefully if we take this away, he'll feel more comfortable. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
-Infection's like nasty bugs and whatever? -Exactly. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
It'd look red, maybe swollen, if it was infected. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
-If it got infected, wouldn't it be sore? -Yes, it would be very sore. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
-It'd be very painful for him. -What's that you're chipping off? Dirt? | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
Exactly. This is mud. I want a good look inside to make sure | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
-there's no build-up. -They're being cleaned. Dirt's off, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
they're trimmed. Anything else to do? | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
A quick spray with medicine to make sure they're all right. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
-I'll dry out the hoof. -It's blue - | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
is that so you know where you sprayed? | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
-Exactly. It gets all over your fingers! -Oh, great fun. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
-How's the sheep done? -Brilliant! -Marvellous. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
Now the ram's hooves are trimmed, Alistair has some lambs to look at. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
Guys, come on in, let's go. Let's have a look at these lambs. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
-What are you checking for here, Alistair? -We'll look at the lambs, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
cos sometimes if they're bottle-fed milk, they get upset stomachs. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
-If you look at this one... -Oh, wow! -..it's got a bloated tummy. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
"Bloated" is when the stomach sticks out, right? | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
Exactly. Sticking out bigger than normal. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
When it's swollen, it's uncomfortable for the lamb. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
We don't want that. Shall we get this one looked at? | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
-Yeah. We'll have a proper look. -Let's have a closer look. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Some lambs need to be bottle-fed formula milk by the farmer. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
The formula milk is very similar to ewes' milk, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
but it can occasionally upset lambs' tummies. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
This upset can cause a build-up of the wrong bacteria and gas | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
in their guts, which can make their tummies swell and can be very sore. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:53
The lamb needs medicine from the vet to help them get better. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
SHEEP BLEAT | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
-Hello. So who's this? -Cherry. -Cherry. -Cherry. Hello, Cherry. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
Normally, the tummy would be tight in here, | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
but if they drink too much milk, their tummies can become expanded - | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
-sometimes it's uncomfortable. -Like us having a sore tummy? -Exactly. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
I imagine if we give him some medicine, he'll feel better. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
There we go. Good boy. Well done. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
Good boy. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:28
-Will that medicine make his tummy better? -Yes, Duncan. I hope so. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
-Oh, fingers crossed, Cherry. -Good boy. Good boy. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
Cherry's sorted. What's next? | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
-We'll look at the rest, make sure they're OK. -OK. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
-Do you want to give me a hand, Duncan? -Yeah. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
-This one? -Yeah. -Ah, that's good. Good spot. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
Looks like this one's got a sore eye. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
-Let's have a look. -Well, Duncan rightly pointed out to me | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
that this one here has a bit of a gunky eye. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
If you look at them, they're sticky around it. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
-Oh, yeah. Poor thing. -Will you make it better? | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
I have medicine in my bag, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
some cream I can put on the eyes. Hopefully it'll help. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
-Rory, you hold it. -Will that hurt? -No, Floraidh, it won't hurt. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
It's a bit messy, Rory, but as long as we get some in the eye, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
it'll help make it better. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
Great. Good work there. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
Got to move it around, make sure the whole eye's covered. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
Oh, what a brave lamb. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
It looks weird now. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:26
It looks weird now, but that'll make it feel better. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
Fantastic. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
Let's see who else Alistair the farm vet has been checking up on today. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:36
There was a lot for vet Alistair to do on the farm today. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
He gave some other lambs a check-up, | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
including listening to their breathing for signs of infection | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
and checking their teeth. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
Alistair checked the sheep's legs and knees | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
to check they were working OK. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
And there were other farm animals, too. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
In the shed, Alistair visited the cows | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
to make sure they were all in good health. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
COWS MOO | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
Well, Duncan and Floraidh, thank you for having me here at your farm, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
-and for introducing me to your sheep and lambs. -You're welcome. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
I'd love to come back and visit to see how they get on. Is that cool? | 0:08:22 | 0:08:26
Yes, please. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
Awesome. Let's see what Ferne's been up to today. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
Today, I've come to this zoo with lots of animals. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
They are looked after by keepers and a team of special vets. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
Justine is the head vet here, | 0:08:44 | 0:08:45
and Amy is one of the zookeepers for these beautiful creatures. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
-So who have we got? -Kiri and Sula over here. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
Kiri and Sula are white rhinos from southern Africa. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
They are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
They use their lovely, big, wide mouths | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
to graze a lot of different grasses. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
What are the girls being checked for? | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
We're going to look at their eyes and ears. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
They've had issues with runny eyes, a bit like an allergy, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
like we get allergies, and also look at their ears, | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
as the flies have really been bothering their ears in the hot sun. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
Our first patient is Kiri. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
-Are they used to coming in here? -Yes, they come in here quite often, | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
and they get their favourite food, lucerne, while they're here. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
What do we need to check first with Kiri? | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
We'll start with checking her eyes. We want to make sure they're clean. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
At the moment, they look really good, | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
but I'll clean them with a swab and clean water | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
to make sure we wipe away any problems, any discharge. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
This is because they've got allergies | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
-and their eyes can get a bit sore? -Exactly. -Like us and hay fever. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
Very similar - it tends to happen just in the summer, | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
just for a few weeks when it's really hot. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
We give them eye drops once a day, | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
which makes their eyes nice and healthy. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
While we're here, we can look at her ears. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
They've had trouble with flies, so we want to clean their ears, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
then put some spray on, which stops the flies biting. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
They have big ears, as you can see, and really thick skin. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
They've got a big mud wallow outside, | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
where they can bathe in the mud to cool them down, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
and protect their skin as well, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
but sometimes we like to give them a bit of extra help, too. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
They actually don't like the way it feels | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
to have the spray go straight on their ear, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
so we tend to spray it on a paintbrush, then paint their ears. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
It has silver in it, which is why it's this colour. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
It helps prevent any infection and nourish the skin, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
and it stops the flies biting. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
She should feel more comfortable on that side. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
Now we have to do the same on the other side. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
That should help keep Kiri's eyes and ears nice and clean. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
Good girl. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
And now it's Sula's turn. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
Come on, Sula. Hello. Good girl. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
-Is she getting the same check-up as Kiri? -Exactly. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
We're going to check her eyes. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
There's irritation and it's a bit sore round there, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
so we're going to give that a good clean | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
and then give her the same drops. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
-And that's the drops in there. -Now her ears? -Ears, the same again. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:23
So, if I hold her ear, if you want to paint it on, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
-that would be fantastic. -Almost done. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
-I don't think any flies will get in there. -That's brilliant. Thank you. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:33
Thank you so much for letting me join you | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35
to see how you look after these incredible animals. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
Recently, I met Duncan and Floraidh at their farm. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
I'm back to find out how their lambs have got on | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
since their visit from the farm vet. Come on. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
There you go. | 0:11:57 | 0:11:58
Right. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:00
-Hey, guys, good to see you. -Hello. -Hey, Rory. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
Look at the size of your lambs. They're massive! | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
They're so much bigger than last time. Where are you taking them? | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
As they're older, we're taking them to the field. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
-Awesome. Can I come? -Of course. -Right, let's open the gate. Come on. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:20
Here comes Mum. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
Right, you guys go in. I'll close the gate. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
-This is the lambs' new home? -Yes. -What will they like about the field? | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
-Grass. -Of course! It will be their first taste of grass. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
-Let's get them out. -Perfect. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
Right, down, down, down, down. Go in and shoo them out. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:53
Come on, lambs. The grass is here. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
Look at that. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
Wow. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:01 | |
-I think they like their new home. -They really do, don't they? | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
-Are the lambs better since the farm vet came to see them? -Yes. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
-That one's tummy's better and that one's eye's better. -Oh, brilliant. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
-Looking great and very happy out here. -I know. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
I have had a brilliant time at your farm, | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
meeting your amazing sheep and lambs. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
-Thank you, Rory. -You are welcome. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
I hope you've enjoyed finding out about farm vets | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
and seeing the sheep and lambs, too. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:29
See you next time for more Ferne and Rory's Vet Tales. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:33
-ALL: -Bye! | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
