CHICKENS CLUCK | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
Hi, I'm Charlie, and this is my little brother Jack. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
These are our chickens. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
We have six. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Some even lay eggs. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Eggwina is my favourite. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
She likes to sit on my lap. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
She's a rescue chicken, so I give her so much love. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
-Hello, Rory. -Hi, Charlie, hi, Karen. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
-Hi, Rory. -You can come and see my chicken, Eggwina. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
I'd love to. Let's go. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Wow! Look at all these lovely chickens. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
-Are they all girls? -Yeah. -Yeah, I thought so. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Female chickens are called hens once they start laying eggs, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
and male chickens are known as cockerels or as cocks. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
What's this very special chicken house called? | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
-A coop. -Absolutely right. It's a chicken coop - | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
the name of a chicken's house. Who do we have here? | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
-That one's Taylor. -With the fancy hairdo? -Yes. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
-I love it. -And that one's called Charlie. -Charlie, just like you! | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
-And who else? Who's under here? -And Eggwina. -Eggwina, there she is! | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
Isn't she lovely? | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
I would quite like to get a closer look at our friend Eggwina, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
-because that's who I'm here to see, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
Let's take her out. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
Let's go and sit down. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
Tell me about Eggwina. What's going on with her? | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
She's got a poor chest and we don't know what's happened to her. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
She does, doesn't she? Some feathers have come out, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
-it's quite red. She's a rescue chicken? -Yeah. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
You've taken her in and looked after her, it's lovely. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
It's an important thing. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
You need to keep an eye on your pets | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
to make sure their looks or behaviour don't change too much - | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
it could mean they're getting poorly and need medical attention. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
-What's the plan today? -We're taking her to the vet's. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
-Awesome. I'd love to come. Is that OK? -Yeah. -Let's take her. Come on. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
This is Ben. He's been a vet for eight years. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
His favourite animal is the manatee - | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
and he once had to remove a pair of pants | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
from a Cavalier King Charles spaniel's tummy. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
-Hello, Ben. -How are you doing? -All right. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
Good to see you. Hi, Rory. And how's Eggwina been doing? | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
All right, but she's still got a little bit of a poor chest. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
A bit of redness on her chest still? | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
-OK. -So you've seen Eggwina recently, Ben? | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
That's right, yes, about a week ago. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
She had red patches all over her skin | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
and some areas that didn't have any feathers on. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
What would you say it is? Why's it all red? | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
There's a few things that can cause redness and loss of feathers. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
-Sometimes it can be related to parasites. -OK. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
We started off trying with some parasite treatment, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
some drops that we put across her skin. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
It looks like things are looking a bit better so far. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
This area at the front's still quite red - | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
there was a lot of redness there before, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
and it's still a bit red, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:25
-but there's definitely some improvement. -Yeah. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
So, Eggwina has been treated for parasites. Let me explain. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
A parasite is another name for a tiny organism or creature | 0:04:33 | 0:04:38
that lives on or inside an animal. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
The parasite gets its food and shelter from the animal, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
and the animal is known as the host. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
Some parasites can cause disease, which can harm the animal, | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
so it's best to get rid of the nasty ones. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
I think the next thing we should do, to start off, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
we can look at some of these feathers under the microscope, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
make sure there's no sign of anything else going on - | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
but there's signs of new feathers starting to grow. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
Look at this! Can you see the new feathers coming in? | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
-Amazing. -When they grow through, we should get some nice coverage there. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:20
They look quite funny when they've not grown in yet. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
Like a tube with the feather coming out of the top. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
Some of the parasites and things living on the skin | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
are really small, so you can't see them just with your eyes. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
If we look under the microscope it makes them big so we can see - | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
hopefully there won't be anything there, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
but we can check that the treatment's done the job. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
Let's have a look under the microscope and see what we can see. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
Ben's having a look at one of Eggwina's feathers | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
-to see if there's any parasites. -All looks nice. -Yeah? | 0:05:50 | 0:05:56
No sign of anything there. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
-Do you want to have a look, Charlie? -Yes. -Jump up. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
-What can you see? -Straight lines and light. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
Let me see. That is very cool. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
Ben, are you happy with that? | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
Brilliant - no sign of any parasites now. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
-I think we're on the right track. -Awesome. OK. -Excellent. -Let's go. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
So, you've had a good look at Eggwina, Ben. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
What's the next step? | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26
The next thing is to give an injection of an anti-inflammatory | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
to make her more comfortable. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
An anti-inflammatory takes down the swelling and redness, | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
so that should help make her feel better. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
-It's not going to hurt too much, is it, Ben? -Not at all. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
-Have you had an injection before, Charlie? -Yes. -Was it sore? -No. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
It wasn't sore? That's good. So, this should be OK for Eggwina? | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
-That's good. Here comes the injection. -Right, here we go. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
We can just do it in this area here. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Right, so, that should be it. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
OK. Right. Not a problem at all. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
She was very brave there! She didn't even move, hardly. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
What can I do to help Eggwina at home? | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
We'll give you some drops to do at home | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
so you can carry on giving her the medication, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
making sure she's nice and comfortable, if that's all right. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
An injection today and then some drops at home. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
You can do that? Excellent. How long do you think that'll take? | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
We'll do it for about a week and see how things go after that. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
-We'll have another check after a week and see what's happening. -OK. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
Eggwina, I hope you get better soon. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
I think that's going to help very much. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
While we get this lady ready to go back to the coop, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
let's see what else has been happening at the vet's today. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
There were lots of different animals | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
for Ben and the team of vets and nurses to see today. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
Baxter, a West Highland terrier, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
had a grass seed that was stuck in his paw removed. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
Tiny Tim, a Netherland dwarf rabbit, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
came in to have his teeth checked... | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
..and Pippa, a Staffy cross, had an appointment | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
to get her nails trimmed. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:20
All in a day's work for the staff at this busy vet's. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
Charlie, I've had an awesome time meeting you | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
and your very cool chickens. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
-Can I come back soon and see how Eggwina's getting on? -Yeah. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
-Is that OK? -Yeah. -Awesome. Now, I wonder what Ferne's been up to. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:47
BEEP! BEEP! | 0:08:53 | 0:08:54
At this zoo in Whipsnade, they look after lots of different animals. | 0:08:56 | 0:09:01
Today, one of the vets who helps care for them, Nick, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
is going to introduce me to two very special new arrivals. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
This way. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
This is very exciting, because I hear you've had | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
some babies born at the zoo recently. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
It's true. Two white storks, which are about to arrive now. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
Fantastic! They're beautiful. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
They're so much bigger than I thought. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
It's amazing. They're just over six weeks old. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
They've still got some growing to do, but they'll be enormous. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
-We want to check they're fit and well. -Perfect. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
We're doing a physical exam from their beak to their tail. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
-Great. Shall we get started? -We need to check their eyes | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
to make sure they're healthy and haven't got any scratches. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
That looks completely normal. Can I have a look inside your mouth? | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
What are you looking for? | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
Make sure that there's no fungal plaques or anything. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
Making sure there's nothing growing that could make them ill? | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
Yes, we want to feel down the neck to check the tubes | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
that go down to their lungs and stomach are all OK. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
What are you listening for with that? | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
I can hear the heart beating quite nicely, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
I can hear air moving through their air sac and lung system, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
and that all sounds completely normal. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
-That's all good. -So far, so good. -I'm just feeling their chest | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
to see how well developed these muscles are. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
That feels good. They're in good body condition. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
They've been practising their flight? | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
Yes, which we want, flapping and getting strong. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
I'll take one of these wings out, we can extend it a long way. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
-Wow. -This is the equivalent of their elbow. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
-Beautiful. -They are still quite pale, these feathers. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
That looks good, and that extends and flexes properly. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
You can see the legs are starting to change colour. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
Still quite grey higher up, then lower down they get pinker. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
Make sure their feet are healthy. These look good, nice and supple. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
We also want to take a bit of blood from this bird, | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
to see whether it's a boy or girl. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
-So you can't tell by just looking at them? -They all look identical. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
Well done. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
So this chick's blood will be sent away, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
and get tests to find out whether it's a boy or girl. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
Does taking the blood hurt them? | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
There's a tiny pricking sensation when you put the needle in. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
As soon as it's in, it's not painful any more. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
-That's why the bird's so calm. -Yeah. It's done really well. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
I think someone else is excited for their checkup next! | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
The other stork chick gets the same checkup, and in a few weeks, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
they will be big enough to join the adult storks at the zoo. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
Nick, it's been great meeting you | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
and finding out how you take care of these white stork chicks. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
-Thank you so much. -Pleasure. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
Not too long ago, I visited Charlie and his pet chickens. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
One of them, Eggwina, was poorly and had a rash on her tummy. | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
I'm back to see how she's getting on. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Hi, Charlie, hi, Karen. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
-Hello, Rory. -Hi, Rory! -And this must be little brother Jack. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:18
High five! Yeah! | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
-So how's Eggwina doing? -All right. She's still got a bit of a rash. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:24
I think we should take a closer look. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
-Yeah. -Let's head in. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
-OK, Charlie, where's Eggwina? -She's the one in the corner. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
Right. I'll fetch her. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
OK. Got her. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
I can see that Eggwina's rash is still there, | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
but the vet says if she is still quite happy, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
it's nothing too much to worry about. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
She's really happy, Rory. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:57
She's roaming around and pecking away. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
Those little brown spikes | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
look like they might be new feathers coming through. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
She's probably going to be OK, I think. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
Well, she is doing fantastic. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
Charlie, I've had a great time meeting you, | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
and the wonderful Eggwina the chicken. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
-Thanks for having me. -Thank you for coming. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
You're very welcome. Hope you've had fun | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
finding out about Eggwina the marvellous chicken. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
