Spritz and Blitz the Goats Ferne and Rory's Vet Tales

Hi, I'm Ferne. Today I'm in London to meet Skyler and Jayden.

Together we're off to see some gorgeous goats at a city farm,

and I hear the farm vet's coming too.

I'm Rory. I'm here at a safari park in Stirling in Scotland

to see how the vet here keeps all the animals fit and healthy.

-Hello, my name's Skyler.

-Hello, my name is Jayden.

We like going to city farms.

There are lots of animals at this city farm -

pigs, ducks, chickens,

rabbits, cows, sheep,

guinea pigs and goats.

There are big goats and small goats.

The little ones are called Spritz and Blitz.

They're pygmy goats.

It's so much fun going to the farm.

Not all farms are in the countryside.

City farms are in the middle of busy areas

where you can go to visit lots of different animals.

-BOTH:

-Hi, Ferne!

-Hi, Skyler. Hi, Jayden.

-Hi, Alice.

-Hi, Ferne.

-Alice works here at the city farm.

-So, who have we got here?

-Barry and Kate.

-They are super cute.

-Can anyone tell me what type of goat they are?

-A British Alpine goat.

Wow, they are gorgeous, aren't they?

There's too little goats that I see in the back there. What are they?

-They're pygmy goats.

-They're so cute, aren't they?

-Jayden, do you know what their names are?

-Spritz and Blitz.

Those are great names!

Something special is happening today, isn't it?

-They are going to the vet.

-Oh, wow!

Alice, how are we going to take these goats to the vet?

We're going to put them on their leads and we'll walk them down.

-So is this Spritz with the white face?

-Yeah.

-This is Spritz, yeah.

-He's beautiful, isn't he, Skyler?

-Yes.

Come on, Spritz and Blitz!

-How was that, Jayden?

-Good.

-Yeah?

-You go on.

-Come on.

All right, to the vet! Come on.

This is vet Tim.

He's been a vet for 14 years.

He once treated a wallaby with a sore tooth.

And helped a reindeer whose tummy was blocked up.

-Hi, guys.

-Hello.

-Hello.

-So, this is Spritz and that's Blitz.

-OK.

What do you need to check first today?

Today they are having their vaccinations,

but I want to check that they're healthy first,

so we make sure they're OK before their injections.

Let's start with Spritz. Head facing me.

We'll check his eyes are nice and clear,

no cloudiness, no whiteness.

-That's to make sure he can see properly.

-Absolutely.

We want to make sure his teeth are all healthy.

-They've only got bottom teeth.

-Absolutely.

-That's right.

-Why do they have that?

-Because they love chomping grass.

-That is exactly right.

-So happy on that front.

-Oh, well done.

So if you hang on to him for a second,

I'll have a listen to his heart and lungs.

I just need to get in behind his elbow.

-HEARTBEAT

-Just listen to his heart.

I want to check how fast it's beating

to make sure it's working healthy,

and that it's nice and regular.

-It all sounds good so far. A nice strong heartbeat.

-Well done, Spritz.

So we listen over his lungs to make sure there's no wheezes

or other noises that we wouldn't expect.

Really happy from that point of view. If you can turn him round.

-All right.

-I want to take his temperature.

So this is a bit tricky, isn't it?

It's a little bit uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt.

He's got a thermometer now. Well done, Spritz.

What's the ideal goat temperature?

About 39 degrees which is pretty much spot on for where he is.

So we're all happy and healthy from that point of view.

-Good job, Spritz.

-OK, so Spritz is all good to go.

-I'm happy to give him his vaccination.

-OK.

Vaccinations are injections, just like we might have to get.

Goats need to be vaccinated to help protect them

and stop them from getting many different diseases.

They get some when they are a few weeks old,

more after a few months,

and then some vaccinations once every year.

VAN BEEPS

-So, I need to get in just around here behind his shoulder.

-OK.

-He may not like this quite so much.

-But it's just like a scratch.

So it's just like us getting our injections.

-Look at that, didn't even notice.

-Wow!

Well done, Spritz! Is that him all done?

-That's him all done for the moment.

-You've been a very brave boy.

While Skyler and Jayden give Spritz some well-earned treats,

it Blitz's turn for her check over.

Teeth look good.

Vet Tim does the same checks on Blitz

and she's ready for her vaccination as well.

-BLITZ BLEATS Oh, well done.

-Aw.

There we go. All done.

Spritz and Blitz have had their health check

and they're looking good.

They've also had their vaccinations. What's next for the goats?

We're going to check their hooves.

If they're overgrown, we're going to trim them.

-Why is that important?

-So that they're happy walking on them.

We don't want them in pain, so we check their hooves regularly.

-Shall we start with Spritz?

-OK. You hold her tight.

-Yes.

I'm going to pick up the hoof.

Can you see on the end there we've got a little bit of overgrowth?

They shouldn't feel it.

-Is it a bit like getting your fingernails cut?

-It is.

-And does that hurt?

-No.

-Stand nice and still.

-That's one foot done.

-Great.

So you can see overgrown there

so we're going to cut that little bit off.

OK. You can see that's now been nicely trimmed back.

-It looks a lot cleaner already.

-Absolutely.

-Are you OK there, Ferne?

-Yep.

Done, Spritz. One more little leg.

Is Blitz having a good look?

-BOTH:

-She's very curious.

-All done.

-Well done, Spritz.

-It's your turn, Blitz.

-Yes.

OK. We'll go nice and quickly.

So, again, a little bit of overhang there. We just trim that back.

It doesn't hurt them at all.

-Do you think it might tickle a little bit?

-I think so.

-You can see where the dirt gets built up.

-Oh, yeah.

Often when they're moving around, jumping up on things,

they'll wear it down themselves,

but we want to check every few months to make sure it's going down.

OK. Last hoof. There we go.

So, nice and level. There we go.

-That looks so much better.

-Well done.

-Nice and quick, doesn't hurt them at all.

-No. There we go.

While these little goats get some well-deserved treats,

let's see who else vet Tim is checking up on today.

Vet Tim had a few other animals to check on at the city farm today.

Pigs Amelia and Penelope were having their six-month checkup.

Gordon the sheep was having his teeth checked.

Tim looked at a newborn silver-laced Sebright chick

to make sure its muscles were growing properly.

And he checked on Kane,

a British Alpine goat whose horn is growing down instead of up.

-That was great, wasn't it?

-Yeah!

Skyler and Jayden, I've had so much fun meeting you

and finding out about these gorgeous goats.

Do you think we can come back and see how they're getting on?

-Yeah!

-Yeah, of course we can.

-Good idea.

While Spritz and Blitz get to play with their friends,

let's see what Rory's been up to.

Today I've come to the safari park near Stirling.

I'm here to meet head vet Paddy and keeper Lynn

who are going to introduce me to a real-life giant.

She's been brought in to the safe enclosure for a check over.

-Hi, Lynne. Hi, Paddy.

-Hi.

-Hi, Rory.

-And we've got a great big elephant here as well.

-Yes, we do.

-Who's this?

-This is Mondula, an African elephant.

She is absolutely gorgeous.

African elephants are the largest land mammals in the world.

They can be up to four tonnes in weight and four metres in height,

which is about the size of a double-decker bus,

and sometimes even bigger than that!

What are you checking out with Mondy today?

We've come in for our routine checks

and also Lynne has pointed out a lump behind the ear

that we need to look at and make sure it's OK.

Because Mondy is so big and powerful, she has to stay

in this special enclosure while she gets her checkup.

How are you going to get close to have a look safely?

I've got these nice long target sticks here.

Mondy's trained to touch them with different parts of her body.

Every time she touches, I'll click so she knows she's done

-the right thing and she'll get a vegetable reward.

-Delicious!

-Wow.

-What are you checking here?

-We're checking the nail quality.

Any signs of redness or inflammation on the nails, that's soreness.

Then checking the pads of her feet to make sure

there are no abnormalities that could cause problems

-when she's walking.

-OK. How's it looking?

-Looking fine.

Mondy, target. Good girl.

-So I'll just weigh her now.

-Is this a big weigh station here?

Yeah, so these are her scales.

-So she is 4,028.

-4,028 kilograms!

That's heavier than the weight of two cars! Is that a good weight?

Is that what you'd expect for an elephant of her age and size?

Yes, it's about average for Mondy, around four tonne is good for her.

-OK, that's good.

-Mondy, ear.

-Steady, Mondy.

-So, where is this lump?

-It's just this wee lump here.

-Oh, yeah.

-It's a slight swelling.

We're having a feel, making sure that's OK and she's comfortable

-when you're moving it around.

-Any idea what it is?

It looks like a fatty lump so it should be nothing to worry about

but we'll probably take some samples to see what's inside it.

-To find out if you should be concerned about it.

-Exactly.

-Then we can take appropriate measures.

-Mondy, trunk!

-CLICK Good, Mondy.

-Wow.

-What have we got in the mouth?

-They only have four teeth.

They have two at the top and two at the bottom.

-They are big, long teeth, sort of in the shape of a brick.

-Wow.

-Are the teeth looking good?

-They're looking nice and healthy.

-We don't have any concerns.

-Excellent. Good aim, Lynne!

Recently I met Skyler and Jayden at a city farm and now I'm back

to find out how the goats are getting on

after their visit from the farm vet,

and we've got two new friends joining us

who love visiting the farm too. This is going to be fun!

They were staying nice and healthy

because they've had their vaccinations.
