Hello. I'm Doctor Ranj. Welcome to our very special hospital,

0:01:030:01:07

just for children. Come on, I'll show you around!

0:01:070:01:10

Lots of clever people, like doctors and nurses, work here...

0:01:170:01:21

and they're specially trained to care for children, just like you.

0:01:210:01:26

You may come here because you're not feeling well...

0:01:290:01:33

Or you need to have a test...

0:01:330:01:36

Or an operation.

0:01:360:01:37

Hello!

0:01:390:01:40

Hello, Doctor Ranj.

0:01:400:01:44

But don't worry! Whatever you're here for,

0:01:440:01:47

there'll be someone like me to check that you're healthy

0:01:470:01:50

or to help you get well soon.

0:01:500:01:52

This is my floor. I'd better get to work.

0:01:530:01:57

Hello. I'm in one of our wards.

0:01:590:02:01

This is where you stay, before and after an operation,

0:02:010:02:04

or if you're not well enough to be at home.

0:02:040:02:07

I'm here visiting a friend today.

0:02:070:02:09

Who's having a visit from me? Who will it be?

0:02:090:02:12

Can you guess which friend it is? Let's see.

0:02:120:02:16

I know who that is! It's...

0:02:180:02:20

0:02:530:02:56

Hello, Kiwa!

0:02:560:02:58

Hello, Doctor Ranj.

0:02:580:02:59

-I hope I'm not interrupting anything.

-No, it's OK.

0:02:590:03:02

I was just reading a book about wizards, look.

0:03:020:03:05

"Frog-ius-pog-ius!"

0:03:050:03:07

-TWINKLING SOUND

-Oh.

0:03:070:03:10

You were supposed to turn into a frog.

0:03:100:03:12

I'm glad I didn't. I'm fine as I am, thank you.

0:03:120:03:16

-But, how are you feeling today?

-I feel OK.

0:03:160:03:19

Doctor Ranj, I'm going to have an operation.

0:03:190:03:22

I know, Kiwa. That's why you're here and that's why I've come to see you.

0:03:220:03:26

Um...

0:03:260:03:28

Why am I in bed when it's not bedtime?

0:03:280:03:31

It's so that we can look after and get you ready for your operation.

0:03:310:03:35

Oh. What do you have to do, Doctor Ranj?

0:03:350:03:39

Well, today we're going to fit you with a nasogastric tube.

0:03:390:03:42

Really?

0:03:420:03:44

Why do I need a noisy plastic shoe?

0:03:440:03:46

DOCTOR RANJ LAUGHS You don't, Kiwa. I said, "Nasogastric tube".

0:03:460:03:50

Huh?

0:03:500:03:51

Naso...gastric...tube.

0:03:510:03:54

Naso...gastric...tube.

0:03:540:03:58

That's it! We call it an N G tube, for short.

0:03:580:04:02

Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?

0:04:020:04:05

N G tube is much easier to say,

0:04:050:04:08

but I still don't know what it is.

0:04:080:04:10

An N G tube is a soft, bendy tube that goes from your nose

0:04:100:04:15

down to your tummy.

0:04:150:04:17

-KIWA GASPS

-Into my tummy?

-Yes.

0:04:170:04:20

Ah, through my bellybutton.

0:04:210:04:23

DOCTOR RANJ LAUGHS No, Kiwa. It goes down into your

0:04:230:04:26

tummy by going inside your nose.

0:04:260:04:28

-Inside? You mean up my nose?

-Yes.

0:04:280:04:34

-Ew!

-It sounds strange, I know, but an N G tube means that we can give

0:04:350:04:40

you special food, or medicine, if we need to.

0:04:400:04:43

But, how does the tube go from my nose to my tummy?

0:04:430:04:48

I mean, my tummy's all the way down there.

0:04:480:04:51

I'll show you, look.

0:04:510:04:53

The tube goes into your nose,

0:04:570:05:00

to the back of your throat,

0:05:000:05:01

and from there it slides down into your stomach,

0:05:010:05:05

the same way as when you swallow food and drink.

0:05:050:05:09

But I don't put food and drink up my nose, Doctor Ranj.

0:05:090:05:12

I know, and you shouldn't put anything up your nose,

0:05:120:05:15

but doctors and nurse are specially trained

0:05:150:05:18

to put an N G tube in your nose safely, so that's OK!

0:05:180:05:21

How do you do it, Doctor Ranj?

0:05:210:05:23

Well, first we need to measure so we know how far to put the tube down.

0:05:230:05:28

Ooh.

0:05:280:05:29

With the tube we measure from your nose

0:05:290:05:33

to your ear

0:05:330:05:34

and then to the bottom of your chest, like this.

0:05:340:05:38

Oh.

0:05:380:05:39

-We need to go down to 55 centimetres.

-Ooh.

0:05:390:05:42

-Shall we see if we can slide it down to your tummy, now?

-OK. But...

0:05:420:05:48

Will it hurt, Doctor Ranj?

0:05:480:05:50

No, Kiwa, it won't hurt. It might feel a bit funny when I

0:05:500:05:53

first put it into your nose.

0:05:530:05:55

-It might tickle or make you cough.

-Oh.

0:05:550:05:58

You may even sneeze.

0:05:580:05:59

Sometimes it helps if you try to swallow as it goes down.

0:05:590:06:03

OK, I'll try.

0:06:030:06:04

Once the tube is in place, you'll soon get used to it

0:06:040:06:07

-and you'll be able to breathe and swallow normally.

-Oh, good.

0:06:070:06:11

To help it slide smoothly, I'm going to put some gel on the tip

0:06:110:06:15

of the tube and then we're ready to go, OK?

0:06:150:06:18

OK. Ready.

0:06:180:06:19

SQUIDGE!

0:06:220:06:25

Great. Now, try and keep as still as you can

0:06:260:06:29

and it won't take long at all.

0:06:290:06:31

KIWA COUGHS

0:06:310:06:33

That's great, Kiwa. You're doing very well. Nearly done.

0:06:330:06:38

And...

0:06:380:06:40

There. All in place. Now, if you just hold still for a tiny bit longer.

0:06:400:06:45

I just need to stick some tape on your cheek.

0:06:450:06:49

And there. All done. How's that?

0:06:490:06:52

Uh... It felt funny.

0:06:520:06:53

It still feels funny. It tickles!

0:06:540:06:57

I know. You'll soon get used to it.

0:06:570:06:59

You'll probably forget it's even there.

0:06:590:07:02

Really? Forget what's even where?

0:07:020:07:04

THEY LAUGH You've forgotten already.

0:07:040:07:07

I haven't really.

0:07:070:07:08

You'll get used to it. Don't worry.

0:08:140:08:18

So, there you go, Kiwa. Your nasogastric tube helps us to look

0:08:240:08:28

after your stomach and what goes inside it.

0:08:280:08:31

It's really important that we look after our stomachs.

0:08:310:08:34

Thanks, Doctor Ranj. And I think I'm getting used to it already.

0:08:340:08:38

That's good, Kiwa. Now, you can get back to your book

0:08:380:08:41

and I'd better go before you learn how to turn me into a frog.

0:08:410:08:45

Don't worry, Doctor Ranj. I'm not that good, just yet.

0:08:450:08:48

Let's see if together we can magic you up a sticker, shall we?

0:08:480:08:52

A sticker? OK. We can try. Ahem...

0:08:520:08:57

"Trickius-stickius!"

0:08:570:08:59

TWINKLING SOUND Tah-dah!

0:08:590:09:02

-Ah! It worked! Thanks, Doctor Ranj.

-You deserve it. Well done, Kiwa.

0:09:020:09:09

I'll see you again, soon.

0:09:090:09:11

-OK. Bye, Doctor Ranj.

-Bye, Kiwa!

0:09:110:09:13

It's time for me and everyone here

0:09:180:09:20

at the children's hospital to say goodbye now.

0:09:200:09:23

Thanks for coming to see us. See you next time.

0:09:230:09:26

But, until then, be happy, be healthy and get well soon!

0:09:260:09:30

If you're not feeling well, it's always best

0:09:490:09:52

to go and see your own doctor and get well soon!

0:09:520:09:57

At the hospital, Dr Ranj visits Kiwa who is in bed on one of the wards. Kiwa is going to be having an operation and needs to have a naso-gastric tube fitted so the doctors can give her special food and medicine. Dr Ranj explains that a naso gastric, or NG tube, is fitted by being placed up Kiwa's nose and then down her throat to her tummy. First Dr Ranj must measure how much tube is needed which he does by measuring from Kiwa's nose to her ear and then down to the bottom of her chest. He then puts some gel on the tube and puts it in her nose. He says it may tickle or make Kiwa cough. Kiwa says it feels funny but Dr Ranj reassures her that she will get used to it. NG tube all fitted, Kiwa sings a song with Dr Ranj about how an NG tube works. Kiwa then gets a special sticker for having being so good during her visit.
