Coming up...

0:00:040:00:07

on Hero Squad...

0:00:070:00:08

..six wannabe heroes...

0:00:100:00:12

..facing the worst nature can throw at them.

0:00:160:00:19

There's a new emergency crew in town.

0:00:220:00:25

I'm Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad!

0:00:260:00:29

Six ordinary school kids.

0:00:330:00:35

Their mission - to learn how to save lives.

0:00:370:00:42

But do they have what it takes to become real life heroes?

0:00:440:00:49

In just two days, these six cadets need to transform themselves

0:00:530:00:57

into mountain rescuers and take on an extraordinary challenge.

0:00:570:01:01

They must rescue a stranded young walker who has injured her leg

0:01:090:01:13

and can't move.

0:01:130:01:15

Help!

0:01:150:01:16

Her last and best hope are the Hero Squad cadets

0:01:190:01:22

they have just 24 hours to learn the skills they need to save the day.

0:01:220:01:28

Get lost or injured out here

0:01:290:01:32

and you're in a world of trouble.

0:01:320:01:34

So our six intrepid cadets are going on a mission with Dartmoor's

0:01:340:01:37

search and rescue team.

0:01:370:01:39

They're going to learn how to navigate these moors

0:01:390:01:41

and treat a casualty.

0:01:410:01:43

Good luck cadets, you're going to need it.

0:01:430:01:45

This is Dartmoor National Park in Devon,

0:01:480:01:52

and it covers a massive 370 square miles.

0:01:520:01:56

It's a remote part of the world

0:01:560:01:58

and it's patrolled by a squad of mountain rescue experts.

0:01:580:02:03

Lower leg injuries are the most common injury out here,

0:02:030:02:06

and the weather can change in a flash,

0:02:060:02:08

turning these rolling hills into hostile territory.

0:02:080:02:12

When needed, these heroic mountain rescue volunteers are ready

0:02:150:02:19

to drop everything, put their lives on the line

0:02:190:02:22

and step in to rescue people in trouble.

0:02:220:02:26

One of those experts is our cadets' mentor, Tim Hughes.

0:02:260:02:31

Tim serves in the Dartmoor Mountain Rescue Team

0:02:310:02:34

and he's taken part in hundreds of rescues.

0:02:340:02:38

The cadets are expecting to meet their mentor here.

0:02:380:02:42

But so far, there's no sign of him.

0:02:420:02:45

Morning, cadets. Welcome to Dartmoor.

0:02:480:02:51

Today you're going to be working with the mountain rescue team.

0:02:510:02:54

But you need a mentor and we don't have one here.

0:02:540:02:58

You might think he's running late,

0:02:580:03:00

he is in fact on the end of this radio.

0:03:000:03:02

-Shall we give him a call?

-Yes.

0:03:020:03:04

This is Rav to mentor Tim. Mentor Tim, are you receiving, over?

0:03:040:03:07

Morning. My name is Tim Hughes.

0:03:070:03:09

If you can turn round and face the moor.

0:03:090:03:13

Can you see the two Hero Squad flags,

0:03:130:03:15

roughly about 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock?

0:03:150:03:18

Your job is to come and find me. Simple enough.

0:03:180:03:21

On this blast, you have three minutes to find your mentor. Go!

0:03:210:03:25

BLAST!

0:03:250:03:27

I can see them approaching, they're not doing very well so far.

0:03:320:03:36

The second horn blast will be the ending.

0:03:360:03:39

Tim and his team frequently

0:03:390:03:41

have to search for lost walkers in this area.

0:03:410:03:44

But this is the first time a group of unsupervised 12 and 13 year olds

0:03:440:03:48

have been asked to do the same.

0:03:480:03:51

Can you see anyone?

0:03:510:03:53

Quite looking forward to this.

0:03:530:03:55

When the weather changes and puts people in danger,

0:03:550:03:59

Tim's team may have to search the whole of Dartmoor.

0:03:590:04:02

The cadets are being asked to search just the equivalent

0:04:020:04:05

of five football pitches.

0:04:050:04:08

He's got to be hiding somewhere.

0:04:080:04:11

Better be careful, Luci, this can be dangerous work.

0:04:110:04:18

Mentor Tim is looking for someone to make squad leader

0:04:180:04:20

at the end of today's training

0:04:200:04:23

and this is his first chance to spot anyone's potential.

0:04:230:04:26

The cadets should be spreading out,

0:04:260:04:29

systematically searching the area bit by bit.

0:04:290:04:32

But I can't see much of a system here, though

0:04:320:04:35

it's more follow my leader - or for Andy and Alex, follow my Kiera!

0:04:350:04:39

Three minutes.

0:04:420:04:43

HORN BLARES

0:04:430:04:46

That's it. Three minutes and they didn't find him.

0:04:460:04:50

Found him!

0:04:510:04:53

-Shall we go and meet him?

-Yeah.

-Come on.

0:04:530:04:56

Having to find him was a real surprise.

0:04:560:05:01

Any of the other times we've met our mentor, we didn't have to search.

0:05:010:05:06

-Enjoy that?

-Yeah.

0:05:060:05:08

I thought we had quite a good chance cos there were six of us.

0:05:080:05:12

It didn't seem that big an area, but I was proved wrong.

0:05:120:05:15

Good morning, I'm Tim Hughes, I'm with the mountain rescue team,

0:05:150:05:19

and I'm going to be your mentor.

0:05:190:05:21

We've got lots to teach you so you will be able to find people.

0:05:210:05:26

Tim's first challenge is for the cadets to find

0:05:290:05:32

20 Hero Squad objects, and some chocolate,

0:05:320:05:36

he has placed on the moor.

0:05:360:05:39

The technique Tim is teaching the cadets is called a line search

0:05:390:05:42

and is used by mountain rescue teams to locate injured people or

0:05:420:05:46

the clues that might reveal where they are.

0:05:460:05:49

Remember to keep your spacing, don't bunch together.

0:05:490:05:52

Found a torch.

0:05:520:05:54

Found a horn.

0:05:540:05:55

-Two chocolate bars.

-Two chocolate bars!

0:05:550:05:58

Found a boot and a horn.

0:05:580:05:59

The team start well, and 12-year-old Andy,

0:05:590:06:01

who normally spends a lot of time inside playing computer games

0:06:010:06:05

can sniff a chocolate bar out from 50 paces!

0:06:050:06:08

What's that, Andy?

0:06:080:06:10

-Chocolate bar.

-Good.

0:06:100:06:12

Oops, take your time, Willy Wonka!

0:06:140:06:16

The cadets have found 15 of the most obvious objects.

0:06:160:06:22

And as they comb the search area for a second time,

0:06:220:06:25

just like a real mountain rescuer, Alex takes the line leader role.

0:06:250:06:29

Keep your line, nice straight line.

0:06:290:06:34

Keep checking and keep looking behind.

0:06:360:06:39

This is much, much better from the cadets on the way back.

0:06:390:06:42

They're quiet, they're structured, they're keeping the line

0:06:420:06:45

and they're listening to Alex giving the words of command. Really good.

0:06:450:06:50

Well done, Katy.

0:06:500:06:52

Slow down a bit or you'll get ahead of yourself.

0:06:520:06:55

Out of all the cadets, Andy's found by far the most objects

0:06:550:07:00

and he tops it off with one last bar of chocolate.

0:07:000:07:04

He's obviously enjoying himself and he's been looking forward to

0:07:040:07:07

the mountain rescue challenge for quite some time.

0:07:070:07:12

I'm looking forward to the mountain rescue so we can go on hikes

0:07:160:07:21

looking for people.

0:07:210:07:23

Let's see how his haul helped with the total...

0:07:230:07:26

The higher the number,

0:07:260:07:28

the higher the probability of detection, or POD.

0:07:280:07:33

You've found 18 out of 20 items.

0:07:330:07:36

So that's a very good 90% POD, so well done.

0:07:360:07:39

So, over a total distance of 600 metres and in a time of 30 minutes,

0:07:390:07:46

the cadets found 90% of the Hero Squad objects.

0:07:460:07:49

It was a particularly good start for Andy,

0:07:490:07:52

who found nearly half of the cadets' total of 18 objects.

0:07:520:07:55

This chocolatey challenge was a success for the cadets,

0:07:550:07:58

but tomorrow, it's a different ball game.

0:07:580:08:01

They've got a huge area of Dartmoor to search

0:08:010:08:05

and a real life Hero Squad casualty to locate and evacuate.

0:08:050:08:09

Tim's brought the cadets back to the mountain rescue team HQ.

0:08:160:08:21

There's a lot to learn, so he's splitting the group in two.

0:08:210:08:25

Nationally, mountain rescue teams

0:08:270:08:30

perform about 1,500 rescue operations a year

0:08:300:08:33

and every one of them will involve navigation and map reading.

0:08:330:08:37

So the navigation cadets, Kiera, Alex and Lewis

0:08:370:08:40

must learn how to read them properly.

0:08:400:08:43

That's where we are. First task, can anyone open the map?!

0:08:430:08:48

Let's check out how first aiders Andy, Katy and Luci

0:08:480:08:51

are getting on downstairs.

0:08:510:08:54

They've been learning how to treat leg injuries using something

0:08:540:08:56

called a vacuum splint,

0:08:560:08:58

how to keep a casualty warm in a special tent...

0:08:580:09:02

We can now stay here as long as we need to.

0:09:020:09:06

..and how to assemble a lightweight stretcher.

0:09:060:09:10

I think our first-time first-aiders could do with some practice

0:09:110:09:15

on a real-life casualty.

0:09:150:09:18

Keep going, lift your leg up.

0:09:180:09:20

We're trying to get the casualty off to hospital as quickly as possible.

0:09:200:09:24

Argh.

0:09:240:09:26

Now Andy's making sure I'm kept nice and warm.

0:09:260:09:31

-Is that about the right height?

-Slight hold-up with the wheel.

0:09:310:09:36

Thanks, guys.

0:09:360:09:38

It's the navigators leading the Hero Squad convoy

0:09:430:09:47

with the first-aiders bringing up the rear.

0:09:470:09:51

Amazingly, the mountain rescue team have let Hero Squad cadets

0:09:510:09:56

take charge of their specially adapted vehicles,

0:09:560:09:59

which are worth £50,000 each!

0:09:590:10:02

-So, right at this junction, yeah?

-No, left.

-Left? OK.

0:10:060:10:11

They've got to navigate five miles until the road runs out

0:10:110:10:15

and then they must travel by foot to a place called Windy Cross.

0:10:150:10:20

But there's trouble brewing in one vehicle.

0:10:250:10:28

-Where was the junction?

-There.

0:10:280:10:30

-I know, but look.

-Look, school.

0:10:300:10:34

-That's where it is.

-There's a school there.

0:10:340:10:37

-OK, so what's that feature we were just talking about?

-Cattle grid.

0:10:370:10:41

Thanks to Lewis, they're under way again...

0:10:410:10:44

Keep on going straight.

0:10:440:10:46

Always keep going straight.

0:10:460:10:48

..and they've made it.

0:10:480:10:49

Yeah.

0:10:490:10:52

OK, cadets, well done.

0:10:540:10:57

But just like in a real rescue operation, when they've

0:10:570:11:00

gone as far as they can by car, they've got to do the rest by foot.

0:11:000:11:05

They're looking for a spot called Windy Cross and eagle-eyed Alex

0:11:120:11:16

spots where it is.

0:11:160:11:18

Down there I think.

0:11:180:11:21

-Well done, cadets.

-It's definitely a windy cross.

0:11:230:11:26

I think I'm quite good with a map now.

0:11:260:11:29

I can tell where I am without getting lost.

0:11:290:11:33

The navigation team got us here really well.

0:11:330:11:36

There were no wrong turns.

0:11:360:11:38

After their walk, the cadets think they're done for the day.

0:11:380:11:42

But Hero Squad is full of surprises, and they're about to find out

0:11:420:11:46

that next, they're working with Dartmoor's team

0:11:460:11:49

of search and rescue dogs.

0:11:490:11:50

What do you think?

0:11:500:11:52

Oh, it's dogs! Yay!

0:11:520:11:54

I got such a shock when the dogs came down the hill.

0:11:540:11:57

I didn't realise dogs helped.

0:11:570:12:00

We were really surprised when the dogs came.

0:12:000:12:03

We thought the day was over.

0:12:030:12:06

We have here Ronnie, Poppy and Jillie.

0:12:060:12:10

Animal-loving Alex has been looking forward to working

0:12:100:12:14

with these search dogs.

0:12:140:12:16

# Who let the dogs out? Who who... #

0:12:160:12:21

Good girl, good boy.

0:12:210:12:23

This is Penny, my dog. She's seven. I've got another dog called Patch.

0:12:230:12:28

If we were to work with rescue dogs,

0:12:330:12:35

I think I'd be fine as I'm not scared of any dogs.

0:12:350:12:40

I'll miss my dogs cos they're awesome.

0:12:400:12:43

DOGS GROWL

0:12:430:12:45

Sorry guys, this isn't play time - these are working dogs

0:12:450:12:49

and you need to learn from their handler James how best to

0:12:490:12:52

use their talented noses.

0:12:520:12:54

This bit takes some dog handlers two years to get the hang of,

0:12:540:12:58

so you've got a lot of work to do. We need to show you how scent works.

0:12:580:13:02

Tim's gone and hidden himself behind a rock again

0:13:020:13:06

and it's the dog's job to find him.

0:13:060:13:09

For this demonstration,

0:13:090:13:10

he's using a flare to show how scent is carried in the wind.

0:13:100:13:13

The skill the cadets need to learn is how to

0:13:130:13:16

position their search dog downwind from a casualty.

0:13:160:13:20

Once it's found the scent, it'll keep cruising left and right

0:13:200:13:24

until it's got to the body.

0:13:240:13:27

A dog like Poppy does the work of dozens of human searchers.

0:13:270:13:31

In no time, she's got a whiff of mentor Tim and zeros in on him.

0:13:320:13:38

These super dogs have got a success rate

0:13:380:13:41

of over 96% in training exercises.

0:13:410:13:45

Wish I'd done that well in my exams!

0:13:450:13:47

-Who's impressed with that then? ALL:

-Me!

0:13:490:13:53

The cadets get their chance to get to know the dogs.

0:13:530:13:57

I think the dog is much better than people.

0:13:570:14:00

A dog would definitely help you see people.

0:14:000:14:03

A dog is the equivalent to 40 people.

0:14:030:14:06

Don't think he's listening Lewis.

0:14:080:14:10

I didn't realise that they could have so much obedience.

0:14:100:14:15

Andy's got the hang of things

0:14:160:14:18

and soon they're all learning how to use the wind to their

0:14:180:14:23

and their dogs' advantage.

0:14:230:14:25

It's been really fun playing with them

0:14:250:14:28

and learning about how they can help.

0:14:280:14:32

I've learnt how to put the dog's scent

0:14:320:14:36

into the direction of the wind.

0:14:360:14:39

This is the best thing so far. I've loved it.

0:14:390:14:43

Their training is complete.

0:14:520:14:54

The cadets have learnt how to search for clues...

0:14:540:14:57

-Chocolate bar!

-..navigated the moors and worked with rescue dogs.

0:14:570:15:03

They will need to master all of this

0:15:030:15:05

and more in tomorrow's challenging Hero Squad rescue.

0:15:050:15:07

But which cadet will be the squad leader?

0:15:070:15:11

Cadets, well done.

0:15:150:15:17

You've taken a lot of information in. We have two new noisy recruits.

0:15:170:15:22

The time has come for us to award the squad leader.

0:15:220:15:26

This is going to go to someone who we want to give the opportunity

0:15:260:15:30

to really show what he's made of and lead the rest of you tomorrow.

0:15:300:15:34

So Andy this is for you to wear tomorrow

0:15:340:15:37

and lead the rest of you. Well done.

0:15:370:15:39

Well done, Andy. Good for you.

0:15:400:15:43

Big challenge tomorrow team. Big challenge.

0:15:430:15:46

Andy's definitely been a leader today, showing the team

0:15:460:15:50

how to search efficiently and using the rescue dogs to great effect.

0:15:500:15:56

Quick find!

0:15:560:15:58

The sun rises on Hero Squad rescue day

0:16:030:16:07

and a young girl is out walking her dog.

0:16:070:16:09

The dog breaks free and in her panic the girl runs after it.

0:16:120:16:17

She slips and falls behind a rock 200 metres from the path

0:16:170:16:22

She has injured her leg and is unable to walk.

0:16:220:16:25

After she's been missing for some time,

0:16:250:16:28

the girl's mother sounds the alarm.

0:16:280:16:31

Sarah! Yes, I'd like to speak to the police.

0:16:310:16:35

-My daughter's gone missing.

-Help!

0:16:350:16:38

Our Hero Squad casualty is relying on the cadets to come and save her.

0:16:380:16:41

But first they must find her somewhere in the vast

0:16:410:16:45

expanse of Dartmoor.

0:16:450:16:47

The cadets stayed in a Hero Squad hotel overnight.

0:16:500:16:53

Just like the volunteers who staff mountain rescue,

0:16:530:16:57

when a call comes through, they must be ready to drop everything

0:16:570:17:02

at a moment's notice.

0:17:020:17:04

I've just received details of an emergency situation.

0:17:040:17:08

I'm going to send that to mentor Tim who's with them

0:17:080:17:11

and let's see how long it takes them to get here.

0:17:110:17:14

-BEEPING

-We need to get upstairs quick.

0:17:140:17:16

Back here in three minutes, that's all you've got.

0:17:160:17:20

They've got three minutes and counting

0:17:200:17:22

to get changed into their specially adapted Hero Squad clothing.

0:17:220:17:26

We could easily beat the boys. They're slowcoaches.

0:17:260:17:30

I can't get my trousers on.

0:17:300:17:34

We should have cleared up last night.

0:17:340:17:37

Their clothes are waterproof and protective.

0:17:370:17:41

They're going to need them out there.

0:17:410:17:43

One, two, three, four,

0:17:440:17:47

five cadets. We're just missing one cadet. Come on Lewis, faster.

0:17:470:17:52

Two minutes 47. Well done, Hero Squad.

0:17:520:17:56

SIRENS WAIL

0:17:560:17:58

Fully loaded with rescue equipment, the cadets

0:17:580:18:01

navigate their vehicles to the missing girl's last known location.

0:18:010:18:04

For a missing person report, the police are usually

0:18:040:18:08

first on scene, but when the search and rescue operation

0:18:080:18:12

is in a wild place like Dartmoor, they hand over to the experts.

0:18:120:18:17

The Hero Squad officer escorts the girl's mother to

0:18:170:18:20

the cadets and it's now their responsibility to get all

0:18:200:18:23

the information they can from her.

0:18:230:18:26

She shouldn't have gone over there at all, not by the rocks.

0:18:260:18:31

I've looked round here and I've called and called here.

0:18:310:18:34

And she's wearing black?

0:18:340:18:35

Good to see Alex taking some notes. They'll need those later.

0:18:350:18:40

The police have given you the responsibility of finding Sarah.

0:18:400:18:45

Particularly your responsibility, Andy,

0:18:450:18:47

because you're going to be running this job.

0:18:470:18:50

Now Andy has this information about the girl's

0:18:500:18:53

last known location,

0:18:530:18:55

he should be dividing the search area into grids

0:18:550:18:58

and sending his teams out to search for clues

0:18:580:19:02

like the lead left behind when the dog broke free.

0:19:020:19:05

Bizzie!

0:19:050:19:07

The cadets don't seem happy with Andy's leadership

0:19:070:19:11

and are just stood around arguing.

0:19:110:19:14

Take charge of the navigation.

0:19:140:19:16

Mentor Tim needs to choose a Hero Of The Day after the rescue,

0:19:160:19:20

and no-one is looking good here.

0:19:200:19:23

He's reaching boiling point.

0:19:230:19:25

The sooner we get going, the sooner we can find her and reunite

0:19:250:19:30

her with her mum.

0:19:300:19:31

-Yeah.

-OK, are we going to find her?

0:19:310:19:34

Come on, guys, let's go.

0:19:340:19:36

So Andy has sent one team out to search by foot,

0:19:360:19:39

and using a GPS tracking system, he can monitor

0:19:390:19:41

exactly where they are.

0:19:410:19:43

But from the direction his foot search team are going,

0:19:430:19:47

it looks like he has totally ignored the information about

0:19:470:19:51

the girl going up the path behind his van and the mother has noticed!

0:19:510:19:54

Can we ask you how many miles per hour are you going, over?

0:19:540:19:59

I'm a bit concerned they've gone down the road because I said

0:19:590:20:03

my daughter went up the path.

0:20:030:20:06

And it's not just the mother.

0:20:060:20:08

13-year-old Kiera, who was in the navigation group yesterday,

0:20:080:20:12

has used her map-reading skills and spotted they're in the wrong place.

0:20:120:20:16

I don't know why we're here because the mother showed us the path there.

0:20:160:20:20

What's going on Hero Squad?

0:20:200:20:23

Andy you need to get a grip.

0:20:230:20:25

It's messed up because they sent us the wrong way.

0:20:250:20:29

It's cold and the Hero Squad casualty is

0:20:290:20:31

relying on you and the team to find her.

0:20:310:20:34

Alex steps in and makes his team leader accept they've sent

0:20:340:20:39

-the foot search team the wrong way.

-We're lost!

0:20:390:20:43

Hero Squad 2, this is Hero Squad 1, can you get back to the...

0:20:430:20:48

And Andy contacts them with orders to go back to where they started.

0:20:480:20:54

Oh my word, we were lost!

0:20:540:20:57

We can't afford to lose any more time.

0:20:570:21:01

In what could be the nick of time, a search dog's just arrived.

0:21:010:21:08

Now we're getting somewhere!

0:21:080:21:10

Katy hands over the dog to the foot search team,

0:21:100:21:14

and that extra bit of help gets the whole of Hero Squad going again.

0:21:140:21:18

There are some great bits of monitoring and organisation.

0:21:180:21:23

The foot search team are finally on the right path.

0:21:230:21:26

They're thinking back to their training yesterday...

0:21:260:21:30

Remember to keep your spacing, don't bunch together.

0:21:300:21:33

They're spreading out

0:21:330:21:35

and they're performing a line search just as they were taught.

0:21:350:21:39

It's her lead.

0:21:390:21:42

And their organised approach pays off

0:21:420:21:45

-they find a potentially vital clue.

-Bizzie. It's hers.

0:21:450:21:49

Hero Squad 1, this is Hero Squad 2. We have found the dog's lead.

0:21:490:21:55

It's here that the dog broke its lead

0:21:550:21:57

and the Hero Squad casualty left the path.

0:21:570:22:00

She's only 200 metres away.

0:22:000:22:02

If the cadets read the wind and use their search dog correctly,

0:22:020:22:07

they should find her in no time.

0:22:070:22:09

Just think about which way the wind's going.

0:22:090:22:13

Lewis gives the command.

0:22:130:22:16

-Quick find!

-And off she goes.

0:22:160:22:18

With Jillie and her handler's help, they are now covering huge

0:22:180:22:22

areas of the hillside.

0:22:220:22:25

And then the long search for the Hero Squad casualty is over.

0:22:370:22:42

The dog discovers her and the recovery operation can begin.

0:22:420:22:48

We have found the casualty and are treating her with first aid, over.

0:22:480:22:52

I've been with squad leader Andy all this time,

0:22:520:22:55

but I want to see how the team are going to get the casualty

0:22:550:22:57

on the stretcher and off the mountain.

0:22:570:23:00

As the only trained first-aider, Luci takes control of

0:23:000:23:06

the situation and begins to fit the vacuum splint to the damaged ankle.

0:23:060:23:11

The girl's freezing cold,

0:23:150:23:18

so thinking quickly, Lewis breaks out the tent and begins warming

0:23:180:23:22

her up as the stretcher team makes progress towards them.

0:23:220:23:27

Hero Squad 2, this is Hero Squad 3.

0:23:300:23:33

Alex is strong as an ox there, carrying supplies,

0:23:330:23:36

pushing the stretcher and reading the map.

0:23:360:23:40

They have decided to stick to the path, might be a bit further

0:23:400:23:44

but will certainly be easier.

0:23:440:23:47

This is much, much better from the team.

0:23:470:23:50

Three, two, one, lift.

0:23:500:23:53

Faster then, she's freezing.

0:23:530:23:55

OK, sit now.

0:23:550:23:58

Let's get her strapped in.

0:23:580:24:00

Hero Squad 2, this is Hero Squad 1. Can you tell me your ETA?

0:24:000:24:05

The ETA is about 15 minutes, over.

0:24:050:24:09

Alex spots a simple mistake that could have serious repercussions.

0:24:090:24:14

The bolt isn't in the right place.

0:24:140:24:18

Even the first aid team struggled with this in training yesterday.

0:24:180:24:25

-Yeah, that's got it, yeah.

-What's happening?

0:24:250:24:29

-We're just putting the wheel on.

-Slight hold-up with the wheel.

0:24:290:24:34

With the bolts in the right place, they can head for home.

0:24:340:24:37

Hero Squad 2, this is Hero Squad 1, the ambulance has been arranged.

0:24:370:24:42

As squad leader Andy co-ordinates the rescue from the control vehicle.

0:24:420:24:47

This is standard practice for mountain rescue teams,

0:24:470:24:50

but it's also tough terrain for a group of 12 and 13 year olds.

0:24:500:24:55

They've got to get the stretcher over a rocky mountainside descent

0:24:550:24:58

of over 1km.

0:24:580:25:01

Alex got the stretcher up the mountain

0:25:030:25:06

and now he's taking control as they guide it back down again.

0:25:060:25:10

There we go, we're down.

0:25:100:25:13

-Well done.

-Stop here.

0:25:130:25:15

-Keep going.

-Well done.

0:25:180:25:21

Katy, last push.

0:25:210:25:23

The Hero Squad cadets reunite the injured girl with her mother.

0:25:230:25:26

Help take the weight. Lewis move the wheel.

0:25:260:25:29

Set her down gently.

0:25:290:25:31

Your mum's right here.

0:25:340:25:37

And as they carefully place the Hero Squad casualty in the ambulance,

0:25:370:25:42

it's another success for the cadets. Job well done, guys.

0:25:420:25:47

The people who do this for real are amazing.

0:25:520:25:57

They have to know everything.

0:25:570:25:59

They have to know how to navigate and they have to know first aid.

0:25:590:26:02

Mentally, it was hard for me. Physically it was hard for them.

0:26:020:26:07

The mountain rescue team really impressed me.

0:26:070:26:09

They go out whatever the weather is like

0:26:090:26:12

and they do some amazing things.

0:26:120:26:14

It's been a demanding day for the cadets,

0:26:140:26:17

but they've navigated like the pros...

0:26:170:26:20

-Always keep on going straight.

-Jillie, find!

0:26:200:26:23

..used a search dog to comb the mountainside to find their casualty

0:26:230:26:27

and they've evacuated her across Dartmoor's treacherous terrain.

0:26:270:26:31

Their transformation from rookies to mountain rescuers

0:26:340:26:39

is now complete.

0:26:390:26:41

Now all that's left is for Tim and I to choose a Hero Of The Day.

0:26:490:26:53

I think Kiera did very well, she was very good in the car.

0:26:530:26:58

For me, Alex.

0:27:010:27:03

He did very well, he was almost leading the navigation.

0:27:030:27:06

But one cadet's impressed more than the others.

0:27:110:27:15

So the person we thought did a particularly good job

0:27:150:27:19

and should be awarded today's Hero Of The Day is...

0:27:190:27:22

-Alex. Well done.

-Thank you.

0:27:220:27:26

Hero Of The Day Alex led the way on this rescue

0:27:260:27:30

with his map-reading skills...

0:27:300:27:33

and his strength when carrying a stretcher.

0:27:340:27:37

Well done, Alex.

0:27:370:27:39

I'm really happy that I'm Hero Of The Day

0:27:390:27:42

because practice makes perfect.

0:27:420:27:44

It proved today that dogs are awesome.

0:27:440:27:48

Coming up on Hero Squad - the cadets face a daring sea emergency.

0:27:530:27:57

Will they be able to rescue an injured windsurfer?

0:27:570:28:01

Find out next time.
