These wannabe heroes are working together to perform daring rescues.

0:00:020:00:06

Over the toughest terrain...

0:00:160:00:17

..experiencing the highs...

0:00:200:00:22

..and the lows.

0:00:240:00:26

There's a new emergency crew in town.

0:00:280:00:31

I'm Rav Wilding and this is Hero Squad.

0:00:330:00:36

Six ordinary schoolkids.

0:00:400:00:42

Their mission? To learn how to save lives.

0:00:430:00:47

But do they have what it takes to become real-life heroes?

0:00:500:00:54

Last time out, the sky was the limit for the cadets

0:01:000:01:03

when they teamed up with London's air ambulance.

0:01:030:01:06

All six proved they were real high flyers

0:01:060:01:09

when they ably assisted a badly injured builder.

0:01:090:01:12

He's fallen from the top there.

0:01:120:01:14

And when it came to choosing a Hero of the Day,

0:01:140:01:17

it was just too close to call.

0:01:170:01:19

All of you.

0:01:190:01:21

ALL CHEER

0:01:210:01:22

This time, the cadets are heading for the hills.

0:01:220:01:26

And after just 24 hours of intensive training,

0:01:260:01:29

they'll be facing a rescue

0:01:290:01:31

on a scale they've never experienced before.

0:01:310:01:34

Two climbers are enjoying a day out on a Welsh mountainside.

0:01:360:01:40

They're working their way up a 1,000-metre rock face

0:01:400:01:44

when disaster strikes.

0:01:440:01:47

One of the climbers loses her footing

0:01:470:01:49

and falls onto a ledge below.

0:01:490:01:51

She's not only injured, but she's stuck on the side

0:01:510:01:53

of one of the tallest mountains in North Wales

0:01:530:01:56

and it's down to the cadets to rescue her.

0:01:560:01:59

To bring the Hero Squad casualty to safety,

0:01:590:02:01

it's going to take a lot of physical and mental effort

0:02:010:02:04

and they're going to need a lot of this.

0:02:040:02:07

Snowdonia in North Wales.

0:02:070:02:10

Home to some of the biggest mountains in Britain.

0:02:100:02:14

Millions of visitors come to the area each year

0:02:140:02:17

and for many of them, scaling one of these

0:02:170:02:20

is at the top of their activity list.

0:02:200:02:22

And making sure everyone stays safe is the job

0:02:220:02:25

of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue organisation.

0:02:250:02:28

Its team of 45 volunteers is on standby

0:02:280:02:31

24 hours a day, seven days a week.

0:02:310:02:35

And when an emergency call comes, they drop everything

0:02:350:02:39

and put their own lives on the line to save others.

0:02:390:02:41

-Good morning, cadets!

-ALL: Morning!

0:02:430:02:45

Welcome to North Wales and the next stage of your Hero Squad adventure.

0:02:450:02:49

Can anyone guess what you might be doing today?

0:02:490:02:51

-Mountain rescue?

-Well, are you ready to meet your mentor and find out?

0:02:530:02:56

-ALL: Yes!

-Good morning, cadets!

0:02:560:02:59

I am Jim and I am your mentor.

0:03:050:03:08

Didn't expect that, did you?

0:03:080:03:10

I was really surprised when Jim came down the cliff.

0:03:120:03:16

And it was really exciting,

0:03:160:03:17

because he came really fast and none of us expected it.

0:03:170:03:21

It was really cool when we saw Jim appear,

0:03:230:03:25

because he came down like Spiderman.

0:03:250:03:27

Jim has been rock-climbing for over 15 years

0:03:310:03:34

and in his role as a mountain rescuer,

0:03:340:03:37

he's brought countless stranded walkers and climbers to safety.

0:03:370:03:40

Being a mountain rescue volunteer is a fantastic opportunity

0:03:400:03:44

to join a wonderful team of people who are dedicated to

0:03:440:03:47

helping people who are in distress or discomfort.

0:03:470:03:50

And we go out and we help save people's lives.

0:03:500:03:53

At the mountain rescue headquarters,

0:04:000:04:02

it's an Aladdin's cave of equipment.

0:04:020:04:05

They've got pretty much everything you can think of

0:04:050:04:07

when it comes to mountain rescue work,

0:04:070:04:10

from tents...

0:04:100:04:12

to torches

0:04:120:04:13

and helmets to horns.

0:04:130:04:16

Steady on there, Myles!

0:04:180:04:19

They also have around three kilometres

0:04:190:04:22

of specialist climbing rope in a range of different lengths.

0:04:220:04:26

And one cadet who already knows her helmets from her harnesses

0:04:260:04:30

is Maria.

0:04:300:04:32

I love rock-climbing. I'm not scared of heights,

0:04:380:04:40

so I like to sometimes look down and see how high up I am.

0:04:400:04:44

It's not necessarily a life skill that you need, but it's great fun.

0:04:440:04:48

Maria may be raring to go when it comes to rock-climbing,

0:04:480:04:52

but when it comes to rescuing an injured climber

0:04:520:04:54

off the side of a mountain,

0:04:540:04:56

this is one piece of kit she won't want to be without.

0:04:560:04:59

This is a bell stretcher.

0:04:590:05:01

They've been in operation with mountain rescue across the country

0:05:010:05:04

for well over 30 years.

0:05:040:05:06

Pass that down. Just feel the weight of it.

0:05:060:05:08

And I'll pass this

0:05:080:05:11

down your side...

0:05:110:05:12

It looks light, but it's not!

0:05:120:05:16

To make it easier to carry,

0:05:160:05:18

the stretcher comes in two pieces,

0:05:180:05:20

which means a bit of DIY is in order.

0:05:200:05:23

Off you go, cadets.

0:05:230:05:25

Can you hold the top bit up here?

0:05:250:05:27

That's it. That goes there.

0:05:270:05:29

Through there...

0:05:290:05:31

Well, it's taking all six cadets at the moment

0:05:310:05:35

to put this stretcher together, but in reality,

0:05:350:05:37

Jim and his team would have to do this with just two or three of them

0:05:370:05:41

up the side of a mountain.

0:05:410:05:43

And with so much kit to carry,

0:05:450:05:46

the team need some seriously reliable all-terrain transport.

0:05:460:05:50

And they don't come much more rugged than this.

0:05:510:05:54

The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team

0:06:000:06:02

has two of these bad boys at its disposal.

0:06:020:06:04

And the cadets are about to try them out for size.

0:06:040:06:07

Hold on tight, guys - this is going to be a bumpy ride!

0:06:090:06:13

Your head's bouncing everywhere in different directions.

0:06:180:06:21

Sometimes you couldn't see straight.

0:06:210:06:23

Definitely the bumpiest ride of my life.

0:06:230:06:25

It was turning and jerking and all sorts of things.

0:06:280:06:31

That was great! We went through fields and then we ended up

0:06:330:06:37

going through a stream. It was so cool.

0:06:370:06:39

I think this vehicle

0:06:470:06:48

is so important to the mountain rescue service,

0:06:480:06:51

because it can get over that terrain really quickly.

0:06:510:06:53

It was really, really fun!

0:06:550:06:57

The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue organisation

0:07:060:07:09

respond to over 100 call-outs a year.

0:07:090:07:11

Every member of the team needs to be a competent mountaineer.

0:07:110:07:15

And that includes the new recruits.

0:07:150:07:17

Just over here, we've got a fantastic abseil for you.

0:07:170:07:21

-You excited?

-ALL: Yeah!

0:07:210:07:23

We're going to see who's got a head for heights.

0:07:230:07:25

And this is the rock face that the cadets will be training on.

0:07:250:07:28

At 15 metres tall,

0:07:280:07:30

it's about the same height as three double-decker buses.

0:07:300:07:34

This could prove to be a particularly difficult challenge

0:07:400:07:43

for one of the cadets.

0:07:430:07:45

London girl Kyra may be a whizz on her roller skates...

0:07:500:07:54

Sometimes it's really quite nerve-wracking.

0:07:540:07:56

You have to have really good balance.

0:07:560:07:58

..but when it comes to heights, it's a totally different matter.

0:07:580:08:02

Kyra's first experience of being lowered on a rope

0:08:020:08:05

was during the urban search and rescue training

0:08:050:08:08

and it's fair to say it didn't go too well.

0:08:080:08:10

And it doesn't look like she's too confident

0:08:140:08:16

about today's challenge either.

0:08:160:08:18

First to go over the rock is Josh.

0:08:190:08:21

It's a long way up!

0:08:230:08:25

Look up. We want a smile.

0:08:250:08:28

It's a confident start.

0:08:300:08:32

-Well done, Josh!

-Well done, Josh.

0:08:340:08:36

Josh hasn't put a foot wrong so far.

0:08:360:08:39

Oops! Looks like I spoke a bit too soon!

0:08:420:08:44

That's it.

0:08:440:08:46

But it's a quick recovery.

0:08:460:08:49

And in no time at all, Josh has reached the ground.

0:08:490:08:52

Safe!

0:08:520:08:54

A little scary moment in the middle there. I saw you slipped,

0:08:540:08:58

-but you recovered. What happened?

-My foot just slipped

0:08:580:09:01

and hit the flush face, but I didn't take much of an impact,

0:09:010:09:04

so I picked it back up and carried on.

0:09:040:09:06

And you remembered what you were told by your instructors.

0:09:060:09:08

You kept it together and made it safely to the bottom.

0:09:080:09:11

-Well done, Josh!

-Thank you.

-Off you go.

0:09:110:09:12

Sam's up next.

0:09:150:09:17

Let's see how well he does.

0:09:170:09:18

Come on, Sam!

0:09:180:09:20

Sam, that's fantastic. Well done.

0:09:200:09:22

Lean right back into it.

0:09:220:09:24

Nice and comfy. Look up.

0:09:240:09:25

That's the position, isn't it?

0:09:250:09:27

This is really good. He's making it look easy!

0:09:330:09:36

You did great, Sam. You made it all the way down. Look how high it is!

0:09:410:09:45

-Yeah!

-You did good. Off you go and join Josh.

0:09:450:09:47

-Well done, Sam!

-Well done.

0:09:470:09:50

Maria's next. Now, she's a keen rock climber. She should find this easy.

0:09:500:09:54

Perfect.

0:09:540:09:56

-Yeah!

-You've done it before, haven't you?

-Yeah.

0:09:560:09:59

Brilliant, Maria! Well done.

0:10:100:10:12

-You're down. What do you say?

-Thank you!

0:10:140:10:16

-No! Safe?

-Safe, Maria?

0:10:160:10:19

-Safe!

-"Thank you"?!

0:10:190:10:20

Well done, Maria!

0:10:230:10:25

And now it's the moment of truth for Kyra.

0:10:250:10:29

For a person who's afraid of heights,

0:10:290:10:31

she's done incredibly well even to get this far.

0:10:310:10:34

Kyra's at the top.

0:10:340:10:36

And I think she's just seen how high this is,

0:10:360:10:39

and she seems to be getting quite upset.

0:10:390:10:41

Nothing wrong with that.

0:10:410:10:42

That is a LONG way up.

0:10:420:10:44

So let's see how she gets on.

0:10:440:10:46

Jim does his best to reassure Kyra.

0:10:510:10:53

What you need to do - just think about it in little steps.

0:10:530:10:56

Put a little bit of weight onto the rope.

0:10:580:11:00

Focus with what you're doing with your feet.

0:11:010:11:03

But she just can't bring herself to go over the edge.

0:11:100:11:13

So she heads back to safety,

0:11:130:11:15

where Lily is quick to comfort her.

0:11:150:11:18

With the Hero Squad rescue less than 24 hours away,

0:11:210:11:24

this is a major setback for Kyra.

0:11:240:11:26

Tomorrow she's going to be an important part of the team

0:11:290:11:32

when they head into the hills to assist an injured climber.

0:11:320:11:34

CLIMBER YELLS IN PAIN

0:11:340:11:37

The casualty has fallen

0:11:380:11:39

and is stranded over 100 metres up.

0:11:390:11:41

So it's crucial that Kyra conquers her fear of heights.

0:11:410:11:45

Hopefully, the final two cadets will fare a little better

0:11:480:11:50

when it comes to their abseil training.

0:11:500:11:53

But Lily is no fan of heights either.

0:11:530:11:56

How does that feel, Lily?

0:11:560:11:57

For someone who doesn't like heights,

0:11:570:11:59

she is doing amazingly well.

0:11:590:12:01

Fast as you want to. You're doing really well.

0:12:010:12:04

And then last but by no means least, it's Myles.

0:12:080:12:11

Well done, Myles. Looking good!

0:12:140:12:16

I got off to a good start.

0:12:240:12:25

I think I did really well.

0:12:250:12:27

Congratulations, everyone. How did you find that, cadets?

0:12:270:12:30

Great!

0:12:300:12:31

Jim, I thought they did extremely well. What about yourself?

0:12:310:12:34

Fantastic. No fuss. Got up there, did what you were told

0:12:340:12:37

-and you enjoyed it.

-But of course, sometimes there will be situations

0:12:370:12:40

where you have to abseil down with a casualty.

0:12:400:12:44

And you will have to lower that person down,

0:12:440:12:47

possibly with a stretcher.

0:12:470:12:49

So we're going to test that.

0:12:490:12:51

But we won't be using a human.

0:12:510:12:53

We've got something EGGS-tra special.

0:12:530:12:55

So let's get cracking!

0:12:550:12:56

To really test the cadets, we're putting a handful of eggs

0:12:580:13:01

into a clear plastic tube that's been strapped to a rescue stretcher.

0:13:010:13:05

The aim is to carefully abseil down the rock face,

0:13:050:13:08

keeping as many eggs as intact as possible.

0:13:080:13:10

Two cadets are ready to go

0:13:100:13:12

and Kyra's one of them. It's great to see.

0:13:120:13:14

She's willing to have a go. She's right on the edge now.

0:13:140:13:17

We don't want an omelette!

0:13:180:13:20

It's an EGGS-tremely tough challenge,

0:13:200:13:23

but in a real rescue, the way a casualty is handled

0:13:230:13:26

could affect their ability to walk again

0:13:260:13:29

or even save their life.

0:13:290:13:31

Brilliant team work, you two!

0:13:310:13:33

This is perfect, Myles!

0:13:350:13:37

This is perfect.

0:13:370:13:39

It's a cracking performance from the cadets.

0:13:430:13:45

Actually, there was no cracking at all.

0:13:450:13:47

All of the eggs have been safely transported over the cliff.

0:13:470:13:50

In fact, the only thing that's come out of its shell is Kyra.

0:13:500:13:53

She's beaten her earlier fears

0:13:530:13:55

and scrambled over the rock face with ease.

0:13:550:13:58

I'm really proud. I'm really pleased with myself

0:13:580:14:01

at overcoming my fear of coming down the side.

0:14:010:14:03

I thought that I'd give it a go and in the end, I really enjoyed it.

0:14:030:14:07

It made a big difference having the eggs in the tube,

0:14:090:14:12

because it was something to concentrate on

0:14:120:14:14

and we had to focus all our attention

0:14:140:14:16

on making sure the eggs were safe.

0:14:160:14:18

We worked really well as a team.

0:14:190:14:21

Yeah, we were an EGGS-traordinary team!

0:14:210:14:24

The cadets' training is over.

0:14:290:14:31

They now know how to tie the perfect knot.

0:14:310:14:34

They've had a hair-raising ride in a 4x4...

0:14:350:14:38

..and they've been shown the ropes when it comes to the abseiling.

0:14:400:14:44

Nice and comfy. Look up.

0:14:440:14:45

Their transformation from cadets to mountain rescuers

0:14:510:14:54

is almost complete.

0:14:540:14:56

And let's hope they've been paying attention,

0:14:560:14:59

because tomorrow they'll need to put all of their training

0:14:590:15:01

into practice when they're called on to rescue an injured climber.

0:15:010:15:05

You don't have to be in extreme locations

0:15:100:15:12

to be part of the Hero Squad.

0:15:120:15:14

Head to the CBBC games page now

0:15:140:15:16

to find out more.

0:15:160:15:18

Jim, you've seen all six cadets today

0:15:210:15:23

and we've now got to pick a Squad Leader

0:15:230:15:25

for a very, very tough challenge you've set them tomorrow.

0:15:250:15:29

What are your thoughts? Any cadets you think have particularly shone?

0:15:290:15:32

I think there were three exceptional cadets today.

0:15:320:15:36

The first person to catch Jim's eye today was Josh.

0:15:360:15:40

Not only has he thrown himself into every challenge,

0:15:400:15:42

but he's been quick to offer encouragement

0:15:420:15:44

to his fellow cadets too.

0:15:440:15:46

This is perfect, Myles!

0:15:460:15:48

Myles, on the other hand, has been the strong, silent type.

0:15:480:15:51

He's remained focused, kept his concentration

0:15:510:15:54

and confidently worked his way through

0:15:540:15:56

every element of the training.

0:15:560:15:57

And finally, Maria.

0:15:570:16:00

With her previous experience of climbing,

0:16:000:16:02

she's been a strong candidate from the start.

0:16:020:16:05

Safe!

0:16:050:16:06

Well done, cadets. How was that?

0:16:060:16:09

ALL: Great!

0:16:090:16:10

-Good training?

-Yeah.

0:16:100:16:11

-Tough, though, right?

-Yeah!

0:16:110:16:13

What we're looking for for tomorrow's challenge

0:16:130:16:16

is someone that can lead the others.

0:16:160:16:18

We think the cadet that should be Squad Leader

0:16:180:16:22

for tomorrow's challenge

0:16:220:16:23

is...

0:16:230:16:25

Myles.

0:16:290:16:30

This is your Hero Squad armband.

0:16:320:16:35

There you go. That's yours, Myles.

0:16:350:16:38

We thought that you need the chance to shine,

0:16:380:16:40

to show the others what you can do. All right?

0:16:400:16:43

The cadets today have done exceptionally well.

0:16:430:16:46

As good as we can expect.

0:16:460:16:48

Tomorrow we've got a big day ahead of us,

0:16:480:16:50

a big challenge, and it will really test them.

0:16:500:16:52

Early the next morning,

0:16:550:16:57

and the Hero Squad cadets are busy in the kit room.

0:16:570:16:59

When an emergency call comes in,

0:17:010:17:02

the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue unit

0:17:020:17:05

aim to have a team ready on the road in under 30 minutes,

0:17:050:17:08

so it's vital everything is in its place

0:17:080:17:10

and good to go.

0:17:100:17:12

And the cadet's response time is about to be tested.

0:17:120:17:15

A few miles away in a remote part of Snowdonia,

0:17:170:17:20

two experienced mountaineers

0:17:200:17:22

are enjoying a day out in the hills.

0:17:220:17:24

They've reached an altitude of around 100 metres,

0:17:240:17:27

which is about the same height as London's Big Ben.

0:17:270:17:30

Everything's going well,

0:17:300:17:33

when suddenly one of the climbers loses her footing.

0:17:330:17:35

SHE YELLS

0:17:350:17:37

In just a few seconds,

0:17:390:17:41

an enjoyable day's climbing

0:17:410:17:43

has turned into a major incident.

0:17:430:17:44

-It's my leg - I'm really hurt.

-I'm going to call 999.

0:17:440:17:48

I'll get the rescue services here.

0:17:480:17:51

The Hero Squad casualty is injured

0:17:510:17:54

and is stranded on one of Wales's highest mountains.

0:17:540:17:57

The call has come in

0:17:590:18:01

and the cadets are quick to react.

0:18:010:18:03

And with their blue lights flashing and their sirens wailing,

0:18:050:18:09

it won't take Myles and his team of mountain rescuers long

0:18:090:18:12

to reach their destination.

0:18:120:18:13

Here they come.

0:18:150:18:16

But despite these vehicles' awesome off-road abilities,

0:18:160:18:20

they can only take the cadets so far.

0:18:200:18:22

They've still got a long walk ahead of them.

0:18:290:18:31

After a tiring trek,

0:18:340:18:36

there's still no sign of the stranded climber

0:18:360:18:39

until eagle-eyed Kyra spots something

0:18:390:18:41

on the side of a 1,000-metre high mountain.

0:18:410:18:44

I see someone's set off a smoke...

0:18:440:18:47

Something to do with smoke, so we can see.

0:18:470:18:50

We need to go quickly, before it runs out.

0:18:500:18:52

The kit is heavy, and the weather appears to be turning.

0:18:520:18:56

But spurred on by the sight of the casualty,

0:18:560:18:59

the cadets heroically march on.

0:18:590:19:01

In no time at all, they're at the bottom of the mountain,

0:19:040:19:06

and it's time for Squad Leader Myles to reveal his master plan.

0:19:060:19:09

Four people are going to go up there

0:19:110:19:13

and two people are going to stay down here.

0:19:130:19:15

-On comms, I would like Josh.

-Yeah.

0:19:150:19:18

I would like Maria and Sam

0:19:180:19:20

to go down with the person on the stretcher

0:19:200:19:24

and Lily, I want you to stay down here with me.

0:19:240:19:27

You can help down here with the rope system.

0:19:270:19:29

OK, Myles, let's get it done.

0:19:290:19:31

The first four have headed up the mountain, and Lily and Myles

0:19:370:19:40

have stayed behind to set up one long rope all the way up to the top,

0:19:400:19:43

and without it, the rescue can't take place.

0:19:430:19:46

While Myles and Lily get busy at the base of the mountain,

0:19:490:19:51

the ascent team are bravely making their way up the rock face.

0:19:510:19:55

It's tough terrain,

0:20:010:20:03

so the cadets are tied together for safety.

0:20:030:20:06

And after a tricky 20-minute climb,

0:20:060:20:09

they finally reach the casualty.

0:20:090:20:11

-This is Sam. I'm Maria. And you're the witness, right?

-Yeah.

0:20:130:20:17

-Sir, what's your name?

-Ivan.

0:20:170:20:19

-Hello, Ivan.

-This is Rachel.

0:20:190:20:21

Hero Squad Lily to Hero Squad Josh. What is the state of the casualty?

0:20:220:20:25

'Hero Squad Josh to Hero Squad Myles.'

0:20:250:20:29

The state of the casualty... Her leg is out straight.

0:20:290:20:32

I think it's a lower limb injury.

0:20:320:20:33

Does it feel like your leg's broken?

0:20:330:20:35

We'll put a splint on that leg.

0:20:350:20:38

Put a splint on that leg.

0:20:380:20:41

-Would you lie anything to keep you warm?

-I'm OK at the moment.

0:20:410:20:44

-And you, Ivan?

-I'm all right.

0:20:440:20:45

This is amazing.

0:20:450:20:47

Despite having had less than 24 hours of training,

0:20:470:20:50

our 12- and 13-year-old cadets are showing

0:20:500:20:52

all the qualities of experienced mountain rescuers.

0:20:520:20:56

They've assessed the casualty

0:20:560:20:58

and now Lily and Myles's rope is ready,

0:20:580:21:00

they need to get her off the dangerous rock face.

0:21:000:21:03

We are now getting the splint ready.

0:21:030:21:06

That's easier said than done, though.

0:21:070:21:09

Stretcher lowers are one of the trickiest manoeuvres

0:21:090:21:12

that Jim and his team have to perform.

0:21:120:21:15

I just hope the cadets have got what it takes to pull this off.

0:21:150:21:17

Stretcher's ready to go. We'll bring it down to you in a second.

0:21:190:21:22

Hero Squad Josh to Hero Squad Lily.

0:21:220:21:24

The training is really paying off.

0:21:260:21:28

Kyra only learned to put a rescue stretcher together

0:21:280:21:31

less than 24 hours ago

0:21:310:21:33

and now she's doing it on the side of a mountain!

0:21:330:21:36

It's an incredible achievement for someone

0:21:360:21:38

who doesn't like heights.

0:21:380:21:40

Well, it's cold and windy down here,

0:21:430:21:45

but imagine how bad it will be up there.

0:21:450:21:47

But the cadets are bravely battling through the cold.

0:21:470:21:51

The casualty is now in the stretcher

0:21:510:21:54

and ready to be lowered to the ground.

0:21:540:21:56

At the bottom of the mountain,

0:21:590:22:00

Squad Leader Myles is keeping an eye on his team

0:22:000:22:03

and Lily's putting the final touches to rope

0:22:030:22:06

that will be used to take the weight of the stretcher and Sam and Maria.

0:22:060:22:10

Technically, their life on my knot.

0:22:120:22:14

Wow! I hope you tied it right.

0:22:140:22:16

I hope so too.

0:22:160:22:18

It's the moment of truth.

0:22:180:22:20

Bottom station, please take in the guide line.

0:22:220:22:25

Sam and Maria performed brilliantly in yesterday's training.

0:22:300:22:34

But back then, they were practising with eggs.

0:22:340:22:37

Today their load is a lot more valuable,

0:22:370:22:40

the rope is a lot longer

0:22:400:22:42

and the mountain is much, much bigger.

0:22:420:22:45

Ready?

0:22:470:22:48

That was hairy!

0:22:480:22:51

One wrong move here

0:22:510:22:53

and the casualty could sustain further serious injuries.

0:22:530:22:57

And the cadets need to think about their own safety too.

0:22:590:23:02

You need to guide the line in more or I'll crash into...

0:23:020:23:05

At the moment, though, they're so focused on the rescue,

0:23:050:23:08

they seem to be completely oblivious to the fact

0:23:080:23:10

they're hanging off the side of one of the tallest mountains in Wales.

0:23:100:23:14

Guide line in!

0:23:140:23:16

Lower slow.

0:23:170:23:19

It's another incredible moment in the cadets' journey.

0:23:190:23:22

They're lifting an injured climber off a rock face

0:23:240:23:27

and are gently lowering her to the ground.

0:23:270:23:30

It won't be as bumpy...

0:23:320:23:35

If you've got any problems, please let us know.

0:23:350:23:37

We have touchdown!

0:23:370:23:40

Nice work, cadets.

0:23:400:23:41

Stretcher has arrived at destination.

0:23:410:23:44

Guide line up.

0:23:440:23:45

Lily rushes over to join her team-mates.

0:23:460:23:49

But the work isn't over yet.

0:23:490:23:51

You're only halfway through, guys! Halfway through.

0:23:540:23:57

You've still got to get the casualty

0:23:570:23:58

all the way through those mountains to the ambulance.

0:23:580:24:01

ALL: One, two, three...

0:24:040:24:05

Lift!

0:24:050:24:07

After such a physically challenging rescue,

0:24:070:24:10

it's taking every ounce of the cadets' strength

0:24:100:24:13

to carry the casualty back to the ambulance.

0:24:130:24:16

It's now been over four hours since they were called into action.

0:24:170:24:21

This is by far the longest rescue they've ever encountered.

0:24:210:24:25

But it's all in a day's work

0:24:250:24:27

for the dedicated men and women of the mountain rescue service.

0:24:270:24:31

SIREN WAILS

0:24:310:24:33

Well done!

0:24:340:24:35

In less than 48 hours, the Hero Squad cadets

0:24:370:24:39

have transformed themselves into master mountain rescuers.

0:24:390:24:44

Now all that's left to do is choose a Hero of the Day.

0:24:450:24:48

OK, cadets, well done today.

0:24:530:24:55

How did you find the challenge?

0:24:550:24:57

ALL: Really good.

0:24:570:24:58

I told you it was going to be hard, didn't I?

0:24:580:25:00

But we were seriously impressed with the teamwork

0:25:000:25:02

that you showed, and some really good work

0:25:020:25:06

-amongst all of you, actually.

-Absolutely.

0:25:060:25:08

Very, very challenging. Big mountains.

0:25:080:25:10

And the weather - it's really windy still.

0:25:100:25:12

So we do have to pick a Hero of the Day.

0:25:120:25:15

And it has been a tough decision.

0:25:150:25:17

The first person that we thought that did some very good work...

0:25:170:25:20

Lily.

0:25:200:25:22

You didn't have the most glamorous job down at the bottom,

0:25:230:25:26

but rigging up all those ropes and making sure you were responsible

0:25:260:25:31

for the safety of your team-mates coming down the abseil...

0:25:310:25:34

Yeah, good work today.

0:25:340:25:36

Sam.

0:25:370:25:38

You were someone

0:25:380:25:40

that did some extraordinary work over the last two days.

0:25:400:25:42

You listened, did what you had to. You weren't fazed by the situation.

0:25:420:25:46

So, fantastic.

0:25:460:25:47

And we couldn't praise you, Sam,

0:25:470:25:49

without praising your courageous team-mate, Maria.

0:25:490:25:52

Every single challenge you were given,

0:25:520:25:54

you just took it on, no questions,

0:25:540:25:57

safely and efficiently.

0:25:570:25:59

It has been a very difficult decision,

0:25:590:26:01

because you've all done some really good work.

0:26:010:26:03

But the person we both think should be Hero of the Day is...

0:26:030:26:07

Maria.

0:26:120:26:14

Well done, Maria.

0:26:140:26:16

Brilliant over the two days.

0:26:170:26:19

The cadets today have really surprised me. They've really shone.

0:26:200:26:23

What they did today is very technical

0:26:230:26:26

and adults would struggle

0:26:260:26:28

to be able to do what they have coped with today.

0:26:280:26:30

I can't believe I've got Hero of the Day today.

0:26:300:26:32

At times, it was really cold, which made it really hard to concentrate

0:26:320:26:36

on what we were doing,

0:26:360:26:38

so I had to really focus all of my attention

0:26:380:26:40

on doing the rescue, and I'm really pleased with myself.

0:26:400:26:44

And Maria's reward for such a magnificent mountainside performance

0:26:440:26:48

is to sit back, relax

0:26:480:26:51

and enjoy a nice hot drink by the fire.

0:26:510:26:54

No such luck for the others, though.

0:26:540:26:56

They've been roped into packing away the rescue kit.

0:26:560:27:01

I thought it was a very challenging rescue,

0:27:010:27:03

especially pushing our teamwork skills,

0:27:030:27:05

but I think we all really upped our game today.

0:27:050:27:08

I'm really pleased with Maria for getting Hero of the Day,

0:27:080:27:11

because I think she did that little bit more than me.

0:27:110:27:14

I really think she deserved it.

0:27:140:27:16

I'm Hero of the Day. Yes!

0:27:180:27:20

Next time on Hero Squad...

0:27:200:27:22

In the cadets' next challenge, there's no room for seasickness,

0:27:220:27:26

as they are plunged into freezing cold water

0:27:260:27:29

as they take part in a daring and demanding rescue.

0:27:290:27:32

That's next time on Hero Squad.
