Who wants to know what we're going to cook today

-ALL: Me!

-I thought so.

Today's recipe is delicious.

-We're going to cook soda bread!

-ALL: Mmmm!

It's really yummy. Before we start cooking,

there's something important we have to do first.

-What do you think it is?

-ALL: Wash our hands!

That's right. Off you go.

Let's get started.

The first thing we have to do is weigh some wholemeal flour.

These weights weigh the same amount as the flour we need.

We will add the flour to this side of the scales

until the two side balance - like a see-saw.

Keep an eye on the red point.

When it's in the middle, the scales are balanced.

Shall we pretend to be scales? Go like this.

Put your arms out wide.

Put the weights on this side.

And put the flour on the other side. Whoop!

Keep adding more or less like this.

Until the scales balance like that.

So, who wants to play a weighing game?

-ALL: Me!

-You can come and help me.

You are going to use this spoon

to put the flour on the scales. OK?

Everyone else, you will tell us if we need to put in more

or less flour.

We need a tiny bit less.

A tiny bit less. Take a bit out.

We add the wholemeal flour to a bowl of oats and plain flour.

We add to this bowl some linseed.

Linseeds contain things that are really good for us.

And they're lovely to feel. Can you do this with them?

-They're soft.

We're going to measure two level tablespoons.

This is a tablespoon. It's a very big spoon.

Dip it into our pot of linseeds, then use our finger to pat it down.

Pat, pat, pat, pat, pat, pat. Until it's all flat.

You've got to pat till it's flat.

Then you put them into the bowl.

And then take another one.

The next thing to add is baking soda and sugar.

Baking soda is magic!

It makes the soda bread rise up really, really big

when we put it in the oven.

Shall we pretend to rise up?

You get down like this, and we go...

Like soda bread. Put baking soda into our bowl.

Then add sugar.

The sugar will balance the flavours in the bread.

We need to give it a good mix.

Use your spoon to mix everything up.

So, it must be yoghurt.

There will be yoghurt in our soda bread.

Let's see if we can find out more about yoghurt on my computer.

To make natural yoghurt, you need some milk.

This is cow's milk. The milk is then pasteurised.

Which means it is heated up to make it safe to use.

It is then cooled down and something called culture is added

which makes the milk thicken and gives the yoghurt its taste.

It needs to be left until the next day

to thicken even more.

Then the yoghurt is tested to make sure it is ready.

The yoghurt is drained into buckets

ready to pour into a potting machine.

The potting machine puts the right amount of yoghurt into the pots.

-Interesting.

-That was so interesting.

Let's go back to the kitchen.

We're going to use cow's milk yoghurt in our soda bread.

What noise does a cow make?

-ALL: Moo!

-Moo!

-Can you moo like a cow, as well?

-ALL: Moo!

OK. Let's put half of the mug in.

And then mix it with your spoon and this will make the mixture sticky.

If you put too much yoghurt in, it will be too sticky.

-Too sticky.

-That's right. Give it a good old mix.

And then we'll turn our dough out onto the mat.

Pick it up with your fingers,

then put your dough on your mat,

then we'll sprinkle flour all over our mat so the dough doesn't stick.

Let's have a snow storm! Woo!

Hehe!

Can I put it upside down and do more?

That's enough. Now, flatten and squeeze the dough

until it turns into a ball, like this.

That's easy.

If it starts sticking, you can add more flour.

-Now it's rolling around everywhere!

-It's going roly-poly, roly-poly!

Give it a squeeze like this.

Go squeeze, squeeze, squeeze!

Can you pretend to squeeze with us?

Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze!

Oh, no. Look at my hands!

ALL: Eugh!

I love getting my hands messy when I cook.

When you've got a nice dome shape like that - can you see?

We're going to put it onto our baking tray.

Bring your baking tray onto your mat and put it in, like that.

Then use your hand to flatten it down a bit.

Make it into a nice ball.

Let's give our hands a quick wipe.

The next bit is to put an X on top of our soda bread.

We'll use a table knife.

Some knives can be quite sharp so you do have to be very careful

but a table knife is the same kind of knife you eat with at home,

so it's fine to use.

Cut one line across like that.

Make it quite deep, everyone.

Then do another line the other way.

The last thing we have to do is paint the top of the soda bread

with the rest of the yoghurt we didn't use.

To do this, we'll need a little brush.

Why don't you do some brushing with us at home, like this -

brush, brush, brush!

ALL: Brush, brush, brush!

That's it! You've made it. You put all the ingredients together

for your soda bread all by yourself.

Now it's time to put our soda bread in the oven

but remember the oven is hot, so don't go near.

Ask a grown-up to help you here. Come on, everyone.

While we wait for our soda bread to cook,

there's one thing left for us to do.
