I'm looking through my dressing-up box.

I forgot I had this old thing.

It's great fun to get dressed up, isn't it?

Now, what have I got in here?

Don't think it's quite me, is it?

Yee-ha! Well, how y'all doing there, folks?

Woof, woof! Ha-ha, ha!

You must think I'm barking!

Sorry, bad joke.

Oh, I could do this for hours!

You know, lots of Jewish children get dressed up

for a festival called...

Purim.

And twins, Eden and Lulu, are getting ready for a fun-filled day.

Shall we see what they're up to?

I'm Eden!

And I'm Lulu!

Today we're getting ready for...

TOGETHER: Purim!

We're going shopping for our fancy-dress costumes

with our mummy and big sister, Eva.

I might like to be a queen with this tiara.

There will be a costume parade at our school

to celebrate the Jewish festival of Purim,

so we're looking for really fun costumes to wear.

I'm going to look at costumes on the other side, girls!

Look at all of these costumes!

-Boo!

-Boo!

SHE LAUGHS

'And look at the masks!'

I like this chicken mask!

'And look at those wigs!'

THEY GIGGLE

I can't wait to try my costumes!

I'm a caterpillar!

ALL: Wow!

That's the best!

'I'm going to be an elephant!'

It's my turn to try the costumes now.

Come out, Lulu, come out!

'I've chosen to be a queen!'

Now that we've got our costumes...

It's time for us to go home and get everything else ready for Purim.

Purim is the time to make lots of noise!

RATTLE!

So we're making these noisemakers called graggers.

First you have to get an empty plastic bottle.

Then, you have to take the lid off the bottle

and fill it with beans and seeds.

I'm putting these big seeds in.

I'm putting some big and little seeds in mine.

There, that's enough.

And next we decorate the bottle!

This is my favourite bit!

I'm sticking stars on my bottle.

I'm sticking red pompoms on.

I'm sticking one of these felt flowers on my bottle.

I'm sticking some glitter glue on. It will make it look sparkly.

There, I'm finished now! Look at my gragger!

Mine's finished too!

Let's see how they sound!

Purim is a time to remember families and friends.

We all give each other goody bags filled with yummy treats.

I'm going to give mine to my friend Joshua.

He loves football and he's really excited about Purim too.

These are our favourite treats called hamantaschen.

They are pastry shaped like triangles.

And I'm giving my bag to my friend Sam.

He loves to perform and he really likes to eat hamantaschen.

I think Sam would like this apple.

Joshua likes fruit too.

We can't wait for Purim!

Those bags of goodies look delicious.

I do hope Sam and Joshua like them.

Now, because of all those gorgeous hamantaschen,

I think I should get dressed up as...

a chef! Bonjour!

Purim is a very special celebration for Jews.

They remember the story of one young Jewish woman who became...

a queen.

# Celebrate! #

Many years ago, there lived a powerful king.

In his vast kingdom there lived many Jews,

including Esther, who lived with her uncle Mordechai.

One day, the king decided to choose a new queen.

The king had thousands and thousands of women paraded before him.

But no matter how many he saw, none were quite right...

until he saw Esther. She was beautiful.

And instantly, he fell in love.

He announced that she would be his wife

and they got married in a huge wedding ceremony.

Esther became Queen Esther.

From that day on, Esther was royalty,

but she never forgot her uncle Mordechai

and the Jewish friends she had left behind.

Now, the king had a special helper called Haman,

but nobody realised that Haman was wicked.

And he hated Esther's uncle Mordechai.

Years before, Haman had demanded that all the Jews bow down

and worship him as if he were a god.

But Mordechai refused and Haman swore he would get his revenge.

So, one day, Haman told lies to the king!

He said some people in the kingdom didn't obey the king's laws.

Haman told the king to command that these people be put to death!

But these people, the Jews, were Esther's people

and, not realising that Queen Esther was a Jew,

the king agreed to Haman's wicked scheme.

Mordechai told Esther she must speak to the king,

or else her friends and family would be killed.

Who knows? Maybe the whole reason God had helped her become queen

was so she could rescue the Jews.

So, days later, Esther found the courage to meet with the king,

where, nervously, she explained that someone wanted to kill her.

The king was furious and demanded to know who it was.

"It's him!" she cried, pointing at Haman.

"I am Jewish and he wants to kill me and all my people!"

The king was outraged.

His advisor had betrayed him.

Immediately, he ordered his guards to take Haman away.

Esther had saved her people.

Mordechai and Esther declared that Jews

should celebrate with feasts and parties,

to give gifts to their friends and to the poor.

And that's why the festival of Purim is celebrated to this very day.

Isn't that a fantastic story?

Queen Esther stopped Haman's wicked plan.

I need to put my costumes away now.

But it's time for Eden and Lulu to dress up

for their Purim celebration.
