for a festival called... | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Purim. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05

Today we're getting ready for... | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
TOGETHER: Purim! | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
We're going shopping for our fancy-dress costumes | 0:01:25 | 0:01:30
with our mummy and big sister, Eva. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
I might like to be a queen with this tiara. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
There will be a costume parade at our school | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
to celebrate the Jewish festival of Purim, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
so we're looking for really fun costumes to wear. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
I'm going to look at costumes on the other side, girls! | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53

I'm an elephant! | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
That's the best! | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
'I'm going to be an elephant!' | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
It's my turn to try the costumes now. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Come out, Lulu, come out! | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
'I've chosen to be a queen!' | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
Now that we've got our costumes... | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
It's time for us to go home and get everything else ready for Purim. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
-ALL: Bye! -Have a lovely time! | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
Purim is the time to make lots of noise! | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
RATTLE! | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
So we're making these noisemakers called graggers. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
First you have to get an empty plastic bottle. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Then, you have to take the lid off the bottle | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
and fill it with beans and seeds. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
I'm putting these big seeds in. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
I'm putting some big and little seeds in mine. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
There, that's enough. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
And next we decorate the bottle! | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
This is my favourite bit! | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
I'm sticking stars on my bottle. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
I'm sticking red pompoms on. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
I'm sticking one of these felt flowers on my bottle. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
I'm sticking some glitter glue on. It will make it look sparkly. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:13
There, I'm finished now! Look at my gragger! | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
Mine's finished too! | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
Let's see how they sound! | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
RATTLE! RATTLE! | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
THEY LAUGH | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
Purim is a time to remember families and friends. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
We all give each other goody bags filled with yummy treats. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
I'm going to give mine to my friend Joshua. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
He loves football and he's really excited about Purim too. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
These are our favourite treats called hamantaschen. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
They are pastry shaped like triangles. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
And I'm giving my bag to my friend Sam. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
He loves to perform and he really likes to eat hamantaschen. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:03
I think Sam would like this apple. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Joshua likes fruit too. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
We can't wait for Purim! | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
Those bags of goodies look delicious. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
I do hope Sam and Joshua like them. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
Now, because of all those gorgeous hamantaschen, | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
I think I should get dressed up as... | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
a chef! Bonjour! | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
Purim is a very special celebration for Jews. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
They remember the story of one young Jewish woman who became... | 0:05:34 | 0:05:39
a queen. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
Would you like to hear the story? | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
Then watch this. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
# Celebrate! # | 0:05:45 | 0:05:46
Many years ago, there lived a powerful king. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
In his vast kingdom there lived many Jews, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
including Esther, who lived with her uncle Mordechai. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
One day, the king decided to choose a new queen. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
The king had thousands and thousands of women paraded before him. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
But no matter how many he saw, none were quite right... | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
until he saw Esther. She was beautiful. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:17
And instantly, he fell in love. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
He announced that she would be his wife | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
and they got married in a huge wedding ceremony. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
Esther became Queen Esther. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
From that day on, Esther was royalty, | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
but she never forgot her uncle Mordechai | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
and the Jewish friends she had left behind. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
Now, the king had a special helper called Haman, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
but nobody realised that Haman was wicked. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
And he hated Esther's uncle Mordechai. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Years before, Haman had demanded that all the Jews bow down | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
and worship him as if he were a god. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
But Mordechai refused and Haman swore he would get his revenge. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:03
So, one day, Haman told lies to the king! | 0:07:03 | 0:07:09
He said some people in the kingdom didn't obey the king's laws. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:14
Haman told the king to command that these people be put to death! | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
But these people, the Jews, were Esther's people | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
and, not realising that Queen Esther was a Jew, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
the king agreed to Haman's wicked scheme. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
Mordechai told Esther she must speak to the king, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
or else her friends and family would be killed. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
Who knows? Maybe the whole reason God had helped her become queen | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
was so she could rescue the Jews. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
So, days later, Esther found the courage to meet with the king, | 0:07:48 | 0:07:54
where, nervously, she explained that someone wanted to kill her. | 0:07:54 | 0:08:00
The king was furious and demanded to know who it was. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
"It's him!" she cried, pointing at Haman. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
"I am Jewish and he wants to kill me and all my people!" | 0:08:08 | 0:08:13
The king was outraged. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
His advisor had betrayed him. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
Immediately, he ordered his guards to take Haman away. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:22
Esther had saved her people. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
Mordechai and Esther declared that Jews | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
should celebrate with feasts and parties, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
to give gifts to their friends and to the poor. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
And that's why the festival of Purim is celebrated to this very day. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:41
# Celebrate! # | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
Isn't that a fantastic story? | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
Queen Esther stopped Haman's wicked plan. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
I need to put my costumes away now. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
But it's time for Eden and Lulu to dress up | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
for their Purim celebration. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
Can you remember what costumes they chose? | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
Let's see if you're right! | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
School is really crazy on Purim! | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
We can get all dressed up and have so much fun! | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
We don't have to do any lessons on Purim. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
CAMERAS CLICK | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
The catwalk is really exciting. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
Look, there's Eva! Wow! | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
SCREAMING AND APPLAUSE | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
Look at all the costumes! | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
There's Eden showing off her elephant costume! | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
I really like being an elephant! | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
It's so fun to have all your friends watching you. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
Look at the two grannies! | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
There's Lulu, look at her go. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
Go, Lulu! | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
That was brilliant! | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
Now we're going to the synagogue | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
to hear the story of Queen Esther read to us. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
Whenever we hear the baddie's name, Haman, | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
we have to make lots of noise. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
SHOUTING AND SCREAMING | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21

'You may not understand the language, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
'but see if you can hear the baddie's name being read.' | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01

'Look at all the graggers shaking! | 0:11:23 | 0:11:27
'That was so much fun, making lots of noise! | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
'Now, we're going to Sam and Joshua's houses | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
'to give them their goody bags.' | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
Here's Joshua's house! I hope he likes his goody bag. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
