Hello. Hello? Oh! | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
I don't know where she's gone, Sprockett. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
Oh! Hello! I'm Thomas, Thomas Ticker, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
the biggest fan of all kinds of celebrations and parties. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
I was just on the phone to my mum. She only lives down the road, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
but she like me to call every day. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Here she is. Yes! | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
-Aww, little mumsy wumsy! -HE LAUGHS | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
-HE CLEARS HIS THROAT -The festival I've got to show you today | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
is all about being part of a big family. It's called Vaisakhi. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
And it also celebrates the Sikh New Year. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
I've got a friend who's getting ready for the big day. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
Would you like to meet him? | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
Hi, I'm Sarbjot. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
I'm a Sikh, and today is a really special day for me, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
because it's the beginning of Vaisakhi! | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
Vaisakhi is a festival where we remember the special day, many, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
many years ago when the Sikh community became like one big family. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
We're going to make a Vaisakhi flag. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
We need brushes, glitter, scissors, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
paint, sticky-back plastic, paper and sticks. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:41
On the paper, Dad's drawn a Khanda. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
The Khanda is a special sign for Sikhs. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
This is fun. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
It's looking sparkly. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Now we're going to put sticky-back plastic on it. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
-Careful what you're doing. -Now we're going to put the stick on. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
I'm using the sticky-back plastic to fasten it. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:13
I'm going to use the scissors to trim on the sides. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
There we go. Finished! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Tomorrow, I'm going to wave my flag for everyone to see. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
ALL: Happy Vaisakhi! | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
Today, I've come to the place where we come together to worship. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
It's called a Gurdwara. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Before we go into the Gurdwara, we take our shoes off, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
and cover our head to show respect. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
This room is where we worship. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
At the front, is our holy book. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
It's called Guru Granth Sahib. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
HE PRAYS | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
When we arrive, we bow down to the holy book, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
and sometimes make an offering. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
The Guru Granth Sahib is read non-stop | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
for many hours for Vaisakhi. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
I like listening to the readings. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
HE PRAYS IN PUNJABI | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
Tomorrow will be a busy day, with lots of people, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
so there's lots of food to get ready. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
The food will be shared by all the people who come here. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:53
I'm helping by washing up. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
-Thank you! Good boy! -Thank you! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Tomorrow will be a big parade. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
I'm helping make the decorations. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
-Which colour do you think should be next? -Yellow. -Yellow. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
Break one for me, please? | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
The parade is going to be so colourful. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
I can't wait for my mum to see me on the float tomorrow. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
I'm going to be so proud. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
It's time for us to go home now. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
The streets are quiet, but tomorrow they will be full of people, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:40
and everybody will be celebrating. I can't wait. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:45
I can't wait either. All those flowers and all that food! Gosh! | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
My mum's a great cook. She brought me this cake round yesterday, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
and I've been looking forward to trying it. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Mmm. That tastes like... | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
Like toothpaste! | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
Oh! I think I need a story to take my mind off the taste. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:07
There's a brilliant story which Sikhs remember at Vaisakhi, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
about how they all came to be like one big family. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
Would you like to hear it? | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
# Celebrate! # | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
In the year 1699, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
Guru Gobind Singh called together thousands and thousands of Sikhs, | 0:05:22 | 0:05:28
to celebrate the harvest festival of Vaisakhi. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
The guru came out of his tent carrying a sword and announced | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
that anyone prepared to give up his life should come forward. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:43
The crowd gasped. What was he going to do?! | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48
Everyone became quiet. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
Slowly, one man made his way through the crowd and Guru Gobind Singh | 0:05:51 | 0:05:56
took him into the tent. After a while, the guru came out, | 0:05:56 | 0:06:02
all alone, still holding his sword. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
But where had the other man gone? | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
Everyone wondered what had happened inside. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
Guru Gobind Singh asked for more people to step forward, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:19
people ready to give up their lives. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
And one by one, he took four more men inside the tent. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:27
Each time returning without them. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
Everyone watching was very worried. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
What was the guru doing?! | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
But Guru Gobind Singh opened the flap to his tent | 0:06:37 | 0:06:43
and revealed all five men, happy and healthy. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
This was a test, the guru explained, | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
to see who was brave enough and willing to dedicate themselves | 0:06:52 | 0:06:57
to God. To defend their faith and to care for the poor. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:02
The guru then took a bowl of sweetened water called Amrit. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
He stirred it with a small sword, said some prayers | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
and gave it to the five men to drink. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
He sprinkled what was left of it on their heads and eyes. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
The five men became know as the Panj Pyare, or the beloved five. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:24
From that point onwards, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
to show that they were all part of the one big family, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
all Sikh men were given the same surname, Singh, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
meaning Lion, and all the women were given | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
the name Kaur, meaning princess. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
Isn't that a great story? | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
It would be amazing to have a name like lion or princess, wouldn't it? | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
-My middle name is Tarquin. -PHONE RINGS | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
Hello. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
No, Mam, I'm not saying I don't like the name Tarquin, | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
it's just not as exciting as lion, is it? | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
Yes, I got your cake. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
It was...different. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:03
Yes, I think it was toothpaste. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
Never mind, at least my teeth are clean. I've got to go. Bye. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
Let's see how Sarbjot is getting on at the Vaisakhi celebrations. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
I hope he has fun! | 0:08:14 | 0:08:15
Hello! | 0:08:17 | 0:08:18
Today is the day of the big Vaisakhi celebration. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
I'm feeling very excited. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
Today, I'm wearing my special Bangla outfit. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
There will be dancing at the celebrations later. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
We're all getting ready. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
Our hair is very long, | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
so I wear a patka and Dad wears a turban. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
The turban is a really long cloth. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
Dad's really good at doing it, but I'm still learning. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:54
Dad's wearing The Five Ks. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
These are five things beginning with a K. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
Kesh is uncut hair. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:07
This is Kirpan. Kirpan is sort of like a sword. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:12
And this is a Kanga. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
It's like a comb, and stays in dad's hair. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
This is a Kara. Kara is a steel bracelet. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:24
I have one too. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
This is a Kachera. It looks like shorts. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:32
We're going to the Gurdwara now. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
Everybody is enjoying the food that was prepared yesterday. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
There's so many people here today. Look how busy it is. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:54
Those men at the front are called the five beloved ones, | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
and they will lead the procession. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
Look, here comes the Guru Granth Sahib. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
That's the holy book that was read earlier. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
It's time to begin. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
It's very exciting. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:22
We're going to walk around the town in a huge parade. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:27
Look at all the crowds. Everybody can take part. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:32
THEY SING | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
It's a perfect time for me to play my dhol. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
CHEERING | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
Look out for my family. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
I can't wait to see their faces when they see me go by. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
Look at the dancers. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
Look at the amazing patterns they're making. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
This is called Gatka. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
One of the best things is that local people give us sweets. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:59
Hey, look, there's my family! | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
