Hi, guys. Welcome to Lessons In The Lounge.

Today we're going to be talking about finding our own voice.

Everyone on the show has their own unique style,

which I think is what kind of makes it so great.

It's all about not just copying your idols or your inspirations

as musicians, it's finding your own way of singing that works for you.

And not pushing too hard.

So you'll notice that our version of I Found My Voice

is so different than Alex's.

Ours was a lot slower and a lot quieter, but it was just as good.

When I first started singing, I sang very breathy.

I find that it was really hard on my voice.

I had a close friend who was like,

"Man, you should take some singing lessons."

And I kind of took that at first as like,

"Dude, people tell me I'm good."

And, like... Yeah. And I was kind of offended at first,

but then when I thought about it I was like,

"Dude, you can always improve."

So I took singing lessons and it really helped,

and now I really just found my voice

and I'm just that much more versatile -

I can sing so many more styles

and I can belt when I want to, I can sing breathy when I want to...

And just know that you can always improve -

no matter how awesome you are, you can always be "awesomer."

I think for me, like, the way I found my voice

was ever since I was really young

I was always trained really classically.

And when I started doing, like, private singing lessons

I sang a lot more jazz and blues, and then when I got my guitar

and I started writing my own songs I would write a lot more

indie and folk stuff, and, like...

All of those are such different genres

and I think, it was so cool to just, like,

pick exactly what I liked out of all of them

and kind of make my own kind of genre, just, like...

And that's really what it is - just find all the things you love

about what your voice can do and all these different styles

and just make it your own.

Yeah. You just have to explore and figure out what works for you,

-and find your voice.
