-Hey, guys.

-Today, we're doing a song called...

-Living The Dream.

0:00:100:00:15

We really like this one because we have definitely more of

0:00:150:00:19

a pop/indie feel with more of an alternative feel,

0:00:190:00:22

so it adds a little bit something different.

0:00:220:00:24

-And this one's for you guys.

-Yeah. Hope you like it.

-Yeah.

# I can give you what you want

0:00:400:00:43

# Even when it hurts

0:00:430:00:45

# I can sing another song

0:00:450:00:48

# I can find the words

0:00:480:00:50

# And it's true that I can be somebody

0:00:500:00:54

# But right now, I don't know who

0:00:540:00:57

# So when all the world's a stage

0:01:000:01:03

# And the curtain's drawn

0:01:030:01:05

# You gotta bear everything

0:01:050:01:08

# And come a little undone

0:01:080:01:09

# Cos it's true

0:01:090:01:11

# If you want to be somebody

0:01:110:01:13

# You better have nothing to lose

0:01:130:01:16

# How did it get to be so complicated?

0:01:200:01:25

# Sometimes it gets me down

0:01:250:01:28

# Sometimes I'm spinnin' round

0:01:280:01:30

# But I won't disappear

0:01:300:01:33

# You'll see me standing here

0:01:330:01:35

# Just holding down the dream

0:01:350:01:40

# So when all the lights go down

0:01:530:01:56

# And the music's done

0:01:560:01:59

# I am here and left without Everybody's gone

0:01:590:02:03

# And it's true that I can be somebody

0:02:030:02:06

# But right now, I don't know who

0:02:060:02:10

# How did I get to be

0:02:130:02:16

# So hard and jaded?

0:02:160:02:19

# Sometimes it gets me down

0:02:190:02:21

# Sometimes I'm spinnin' round

0:02:210:02:24

# But I won't disappear

0:02:240:02:26

# You'll see me standing here

0:02:260:02:29

# Just holding down the dream

0:02:290:02:33

-BOTH:

-# Holding down

0:02:340:02:40

# The dream. #

-Hey, guys, welcome to Lessons In The Lounge.

-Hey, hey.

0:03:010:03:04

Today, we're going to talk about our rendition of Living The Dream.

0:03:040:03:07

So what are we talking about exactly?

0:03:070:03:09

We're going to talk about how to use

0:03:090:03:11

a sustain pedal when you're playing the piano.

0:03:110:03:13

Now, that is the pedal that's on the ground underneath a piano,

0:03:130:03:17

and its purpose is to lengthen the sound of the notes you're

0:03:170:03:21

playing so that when you're switching between chords,

0:03:210:03:24

there's no awkward pauses in between,

0:03:240:03:26

-there's no silence, it just really...gives it a flow.

-Mm-hm.

0:03:260:03:30

So, I can take you over to the keyboard

0:03:300:03:32

and show you a little example.

0:03:320:03:34

-Fo' sho'!

-Fo' sho'!

0:03:340:03:37

-And this is the sustain pedal right here.

-Yes.

0:03:370:03:40

-If I was playing a little bit of our song from earlier...

-Mm-hm.

0:03:410:03:46

And I wasn't using the sustain pedal,

0:03:460:03:48

it would sound something like this.

0:03:480:03:50

And the musical term for how precise and how clean and knit and tight

0:03:580:04:02

that is is called staccato, which means it is very fast and very...

0:04:020:04:06

-Abrupt.

-It all closes and ends... Yes, abrupt.

0:04:060:04:08

-Yes.

-Abrupt is a very good word.

0:04:080:04:10

OK, so this time, I'm going to use the pedal,

0:04:100:04:13

-and it's going to sound a lot more flowy.

-Mm-hm.

0:04:130:04:16

Do you always keep your foot on the pedal or do you take it...?

0:04:250:04:28

Like, when do you take your foot off of the pedal?

0:04:280:04:31

-Usually, you hold it while you're playing the chord.

-Yep

0:04:310:04:36

And then you hold it through until you switch chords,

0:04:360:04:39

but once you hit that next chord,

0:04:390:04:41

you want to take your foot off and put it back on because

0:04:410:04:44

sometimes the first chord and the second chord can clash...

0:04:440:04:47

-Right.

-..and not sound too great together.

0:04:470:04:49

-And it's not very clean.

-Yeah.

0:04:490:04:50

So I like to take it off and put it back on every time I change chords.

0:04:500:04:55

-Yeah.

-So that's basically what a sustain pedal is.

-Yeah.

0:04:550:04:59

Awesome. We hope you guys learned a little thing or two from our lessons

0:04:590:05:02

today and join us next time.

0:05:020:05:05

-Yeah. See you guys.

-Take care.
