-Hey, guys. -Today, we're doing a song called... -Living The Dream. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:15
We really like this one because we have definitely more of | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
a pop/indie feel with more of an alternative feel, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
so it adds a little bit something different. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
-And this one's for you guys. -Yeah. Hope you like it. -Yeah. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27

# I can sing another song | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
# I can find the words | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
# And it's true that I can be somebody | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
# But right now, I don't know who | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
# So when all the world's a stage | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
# And the curtain's drawn | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
# You gotta bear everything | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08

-Hey, guys, welcome to Lessons In The Lounge. -Hey, hey. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Today, we're going to talk about our rendition of Living The Dream. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
So what are we talking about exactly? | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
We're going to talk about how to use | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
a sustain pedal when you're playing the piano. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
Now, that is the pedal that's on the ground underneath a piano, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
and its purpose is to lengthen the sound of the notes you're | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
playing so that when you're switching between chords, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
there's no awkward pauses in between, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
-there's no silence, it just really...gives it a flow. -Mm-hm. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
So, I can take you over to the keyboard | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
and show you a little example. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
-Fo' sho'! -Fo' sho'! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
-And this is the sustain pedal right here. -Yes. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
-If I was playing a little bit of our song from earlier... -Mm-hm. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
And I wasn't using the sustain pedal, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
it would sound something like this. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
And the musical term for how precise and how clean and knit and tight | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
that is is called staccato, which means it is very fast and very... | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
-Abrupt. -It all closes and ends... Yes, abrupt. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
-Yes. -Abrupt is a very good word. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
OK, so this time, I'm going to use the pedal, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
-and it's going to sound a lot more flowy. -Mm-hm. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
Do you always keep your foot on the pedal or do you take it...? | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
Like, when do you take your foot off of the pedal? | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
-Usually, you hold it while you're playing the chord. -Yep | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
And then you hold it through until you switch chords, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
but once you hit that next chord, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
you want to take your foot off and put it back on because | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
sometimes the first chord and the second chord can clash... | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
-Right. -..and not sound too great together. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
-And it's not very clean. -Yeah. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:50
So I like to take it off and put it back on every time I change chords. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
-Yeah. -So that's basically what a sustain pedal is. -Yeah. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
Awesome. We hope you guys learned a little thing or two from our lessons | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
today and join us next time. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
-Yeah. See you guys. -Take care. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07 |
