0:00:400:00:41

Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:430:00:45

First, I have to tell you that today's minibeast

0:00:450:00:47

is not everybody's favourite.

0:00:470:00:49

But I think they're really cool.

0:00:490:00:51

Today, we're going on a fly adventure.

0:00:510:00:54

So what's in here?

0:00:540:00:56

I'll show you.

0:00:560:00:57

They look a bit like caterpillars, don't they?

0:01:000:01:03

Well, they kind of ARE caterpillars, but are flies.

0:01:030:01:07

These are baby flies called maggots.

0:01:070:01:09

They hatch out of eggs and, just like caterpillars,

0:01:090:01:12

they eat and eat and grow bigger and bigger.

0:01:120:01:16

And, do you know what happens to a caterpillar when it's fully grown?

0:01:160:01:20

It wraps itself up into a pupa, goes to sleep

0:01:200:01:23

and wakes up as a beautiful butterfly.

0:01:230:01:25

The same thing happens with maggots.

0:01:250:01:28

Have a look in here.

0:01:280:01:29

These are fly pupae.

0:01:310:01:33

Inside, a maggot is slowly turning into a fly, growing wings,

0:01:330:01:37

eyes and legs.

0:01:370:01:39

It's totally amazing that all that is happening

0:01:390:01:43

inside this tiny package.

0:01:430:01:45

In a few days, a fly emerges from the pupa.

0:01:450:01:49

Like these.

0:01:490:01:51

Look!

0:01:510:01:52

They have shiny wings,

0:01:520:01:54

huge big, red eyes and six legs.

0:01:540:01:58

Look at this one washing its face.

0:01:580:02:01

And this one is feeding on a banana.

0:02:030:02:06

What a massive, fat tongue it has!

0:02:060:02:09

Isn't it incredible how quickly that maggot turned into this fly,

0:02:090:02:13

which is quite a different creature?

0:02:130:02:16

Even more amazingly, the fly can lay eggs after just three days.

0:02:160:02:21

So, it goes egg, maggot, pupa, fly

0:02:210:02:25

and the flies lay more eggs and they hatch into maggots

0:02:250:02:28

which turn into pupa, which hatch into flies and they lay more eggs

0:02:280:02:32

and so it goes round and round again.

0:02:320:02:35

And that's the fly's life cycle.

0:02:350:02:37

Flies live everywhere so I'm sure there's some living near you.

0:02:370:02:41

Shall we go and find some?

0:02:410:02:43

Come on!

0:02:440:02:46

Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:02:540:02:59

Hi, Justin. Hi, Stanley.

0:03:040:03:06

BOTH: Hi, Jess.

0:03:060:03:08

-Today, we're going on a fly adventure.

-OK.

0:03:080:03:12

-Have you seen any flies around here?

-Yes.

0:03:120:03:15

-Over there.

-Great!

0:03:150:03:17

Get your feelers ready then.

0:03:170:03:19

Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:190:03:22

ALL: We're off on a minibeast adventure.

0:03:220:03:26

-There's lots of flies over here.

-Can you see any?

0:03:320:03:35

Look! There's a fly.

0:03:350:03:37

-Yes.

-Do you think you can catch it?

0:03:370:03:39

Wait. It might come on my hand.

0:03:390:03:42

-Can you see any flies that...

-Yeah!

0:03:420:03:45

-Did you see that? How on earth are we going to catch these?

-I saw...

0:03:450:03:49

-Oh, look. Oh!

-Where have the nets gone?

0:03:490:03:52

-You've got nets?

-Yeah, we've got some nets.

0:03:520:03:55

Then we can catch it with.

0:03:550:03:57

Oh, yeah!

0:04:000:04:02

Here you go, Stanley.

0:04:020:04:04

Look, there's one there. Can you get it?

0:04:040:04:07

Oh! Ooh!

0:04:070:04:09

JESS LAUGHS

0:04:090:04:12

-There's one over there.

-Where?

-Oh, it's far away.

0:04:120:04:15

Shall we look over there?

0:04:150:04:17

I found one!

0:04:170:04:19

Oh, there's lots of them.

0:04:190:04:21

There's one. There's one!

0:04:210:04:23

Look by your feet.

0:04:230:04:25

-Oh!

-Another one!

0:04:260:04:28

-Flies!

-There's one. There's one. There, there, there!

0:04:290:04:33

There's one there. That's just...

0:04:330:04:35

..a spider!

0:04:350:04:36

-Fly!

-There's one. There's one!

0:04:360:04:39

Oh, you were so close. Did you get it? Look!

0:04:410:04:44

It's a massive one!

0:04:440:04:46

-Look, it's walking on my hand.

-It's a little bit like a spider.

-Why?

0:04:480:04:53

Because it's...

0:04:530:04:55

The hair on the legs makes it sticky and then it walks on.

0:04:560:05:03

It's got very sticky feet, hasn't it?

0:05:030:05:06

For an insect, I think that's big.

0:05:080:05:11

Yeah, really big.

0:05:110:05:12

Do you think they have very good eyesight?

0:05:120:05:15

-Yeah.

-No.

0:05:150:05:17

Oh! Justin thinks yes. Stanley thinks no.

0:05:170:05:20

When I was trying to catch one, he was really fast.

0:05:200:05:23

He just flew away quickly.

0:05:230:05:24

Yes, if you're a flying insect, you do need really good eyesight.

0:05:240:05:28

If someone tries to catch you,

0:05:280:05:29

you have to be able to change direction really quickly.

0:05:290:05:33

If I was a fly and I was a friend of yours, I would let you catch me.

0:05:330:05:37

Oh, that's nice!

0:05:370:05:39

Flies have sticky stuff on their feet to help them climb.

0:05:420:05:47

They can even walk upside down.

0:05:470:05:50

Imagine if you could do that!

0:05:520:05:56

HE GIGGLES

0:05:560:06:00

What do flies like to eat?

0:06:000:06:02

Don't they like to eat poo?

0:06:020:06:05

Yes, actually, flies do like to eat poo, don't they?

0:06:050:06:08

That's great because what would happen to all the poo everywhere

0:06:080:06:12

-if flies didn't eat poo?

-It would be all over the place.

0:06:120:06:16

Yeah, it would be, wouldn't it?

0:06:160:06:18

Flies do like to eat other things apart from poo, don't they?

0:06:180:06:22

So, we thought we'd do an experiment

0:06:220:06:24

to see which foods they like the best.

0:06:240:06:26

-What have you got on your plate, Justin?

-Cat food and pizza.

0:06:260:06:30

Here you go. Here's a picture of some cat food and pizza

0:06:300:06:33

for you to record how many flies land there.

0:06:330:06:36

-What have you got, Stanley?

-I've got hummus and jam.

0:06:360:06:39

There's your clipboard. I've got banana and sausage.

0:06:390:06:44

THEY GIGGLE

0:06:440:06:46

So, which one is going to attract the most flies?

0:06:460:06:49

There's a fly! There's a fly! Oh, it's eating the cat food.

0:06:520:06:55

One to Justin.

0:06:570:06:58

He's actually eating it with his hands.

0:07:000:07:03

-Shall we move over there to see if they come if we move away?

-OK.

0:07:030:07:07

Oh, pizza!

0:07:070:07:09

And cat food. Oh, oh, it's gone to my plate. Aw!

0:07:100:07:14

Cat food!

0:07:140:07:16

Pizza.

0:07:160:07:18

-It's on the cat food as well.

-Yeah, baby.

-You got one. You got one!

0:07:180:07:22

There's another one. Oh, oh...

0:07:240:07:27

-Pizza.

-NO!

0:07:270:07:29

Two on my plate! Oh!

0:07:290:07:32

Cat food.

0:07:320:07:34

They love your plate, Justin. Shall we add up how many flies we got?

0:07:340:07:38

-Yeah.

-Yes? Well it's easy for me to do. Zero.

0:07:380:07:42

Jam got one.

0:07:420:07:44

-Pizza, four.

-How much did cat food get?

0:07:450:07:48

One, two, three, four, five, six,

0:07:480:07:51

seven, eight, nine.

0:07:510:07:53

Nine!

0:07:530:07:56

That's probably because it was the smelliest.

0:07:560:08:00

I think we lost, didn't we, Stanley?

0:08:000:08:02

I think I was the second to lose.

0:08:020:08:05

Yes, I completely lost. OK.

0:08:050:08:09

That was a funny minibeast adventure, wasn't it?

0:08:130:08:16

Maybe you could go on a fly adventure too.

0:08:160:08:19

They're pretty easy to find,

0:08:190:08:20

especially if you're around cat food.

0:08:200:08:23

See if you can spot their big fly eyes

0:08:230:08:25

and, if you watch them feeding,

0:08:250:08:27

maybe you can see their big fat tongues.

0:08:270:08:30

Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:300:08:32

Happy hunting, adventurers!
