Welcome to my tree house. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
First, I have to tell you that today's minibeast | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
is not everybody's favourite. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
But I think they're really cool. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Today, we're going on a fly adventure. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
So what's in here? | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
I'll show you. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
They look a bit like caterpillars, don't they? | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Well, they kind of ARE caterpillars, but are flies. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
These are baby flies called maggots. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
They hatch out of eggs and, just like caterpillars, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
they eat and eat and grow bigger and bigger. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
And, do you know what happens to a caterpillar when it's fully grown? | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
It wraps itself up into a pupa, goes to sleep | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
and wakes up as a beautiful butterfly. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
The same thing happens with maggots. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Have a look in here. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
These are fly pupae. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
Inside, a maggot is slowly turning into a fly, growing wings, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
eyes and legs. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
It's totally amazing that all that is happening | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
inside this tiny package. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
In a few days, a fly emerges from the pupa. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
Like these. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Look! | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52 | |
They have shiny wings, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
huge big, red eyes and six legs. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Look at this one washing its face. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
And this one is feeding on a banana. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
What a massive, fat tongue it has! | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
Isn't it incredible how quickly that maggot turned into this fly, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
which is quite a different creature? | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
Even more amazingly, the fly can lay eggs after just three days. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
So, it goes egg, maggot, pupa, fly | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
and the flies lay more eggs and they hatch into maggots | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
which turn into pupa, which hatch into flies and they lay more eggs | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
and so it goes round and round again. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
And that's the fly's life cycle. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
Flies live everywhere so I'm sure there's some living near you. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
Shall we go and find some? | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Come on! | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure! | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
Hi, Justin. Hi, Stanley. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
BOTH: Hi, Jess. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
-Today, we're going on a fly adventure. -OK. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
-Have you seen any flies around here? -Yes. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
-Over there. -Great! | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Get your feelers ready then. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
Feelers out, what's about? | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
ALL: We're off on a minibeast adventure. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
-There's lots of flies over here. -Can you see any? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Look! There's a fly. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
-Yes. -Do you think you can catch it? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
Wait. It might come on my hand. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
-Can you see any flies that... -Yeah! | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
-Did you see that? How on earth are we going to catch these? -I saw... | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
-Oh, look. Oh! -Where have the nets gone? | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
-You've got nets? -Yeah, we've got some nets. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Then we can catch it with. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Oh, yeah! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Here you go, Stanley. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
Look, there's one there. Can you get it? | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
Oh! Ooh! | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
JESS LAUGHS | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
-There's one over there. -Where? -Oh, it's far away. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Shall we look over there? | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
I found one! | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
Oh, there's lots of them. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
There's one. There's one! | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
Look by your feet. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
-Oh! -Another one! | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
-Flies! -There's one. There's one. There, there, there! | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
There's one there. That's just... | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
..a spider! | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
-Fly! -There's one. There's one! | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
Oh, you were so close. Did you get it? Look! | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
It's a massive one! | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
-Look, it's walking on my hand. -It's a little bit like a spider. -Why? | 0:04:48 | 0:04:53
Because it's... | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
The hair on the legs makes it sticky and then it walks on. | 0:04:56 | 0:05:03
It's got very sticky feet, hasn't it? | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
For an insect, I think that's big. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
Yeah, really big. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:12
Do you think they have very good eyesight? | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
-Yeah. -No. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
Oh! Justin thinks yes. Stanley thinks no. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
When I was trying to catch one, he was really fast. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
He just flew away quickly. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
Yes, if you're a flying insect, you do need really good eyesight. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
If someone tries to catch you, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
you have to be able to change direction really quickly. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
If I was a fly and I was a friend of yours, I would let you catch me. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
Oh, that's nice! | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
Flies have sticky stuff on their feet to help them climb. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:47
They can even walk upside down. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
Imagine if you could do that! | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
HE GIGGLES | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
What do flies like to eat? | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
Don't they like to eat poo? | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
Yes, actually, flies do like to eat poo, don't they? | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
That's great because what would happen to all the poo everywhere | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
-if flies didn't eat poo? -It would be all over the place. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
Yeah, it would be, wouldn't it? | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
Flies do like to eat other things apart from poo, don't they? | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
So, we thought we'd do an experiment | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
to see which foods they like the best. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
-What have you got on your plate, Justin? -Cat food and pizza. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
Here you go. Here's a picture of some cat food and pizza | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
for you to record how many flies land there. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
-What have you got, Stanley? -I've got hummus and jam. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
There's your clipboard. I've got banana and sausage. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:44
THEY GIGGLE | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
So, which one is going to attract the most flies? | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
There's a fly! There's a fly! Oh, it's eating the cat food. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
One to Justin. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:58
He's actually eating it with his hands. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
-Shall we move over there to see if they come if we move away? -OK. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
Oh, pizza! | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
And cat food. Oh, oh, it's gone to my plate. Aw! | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
Cat food! | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
Pizza. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
-It's on the cat food as well. -Yeah, baby. -You got one. You got one! | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
There's another one. Oh, oh... | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
-Pizza. -NO! | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
Two on my plate! Oh! | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Cat food. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
They love your plate, Justin. Shall we add up how many flies we got? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
-Yeah. -Yes? Well it's easy for me to do. Zero. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
Jam got one. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
-Pizza, four. -How much did cat food get? | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
One, two, three, four, five, six, | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
seven, eight, nine. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
Nine! | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56 | |
That's probably because it was the smelliest. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
I think we lost, didn't we, Stanley? | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
I think I was the second to lose. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
Yes, I completely lost. OK. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
That was a funny minibeast adventure, wasn't it? | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
Maybe you could go on a fly adventure too. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
They're pretty easy to find, | 0:08:19 | 0:08:20
especially if you're around cat food. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
See if you can spot their big fly eyes | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
and, if you watch them feeding, | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
maybe you can see their big fat tongues. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
Feelers out, what's about? | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Happy hunting, adventurers! | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34 |
