With Jess!

0:00:390:00:41

Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:420:00:44

I've got some beautiful minibeasts in here.

0:00:440:00:47

Painted lady butterflies.

0:00:470:00:49

I've grown them since they were caterpillars.

0:00:490:00:52

First, they were eggs, then they hatched into caterpillars,

0:00:520:00:55

and they ate and ate and got bigger and bigger,

0:00:550:00:59

and finally they wrapped themselves in a chrysalis and went to sleep.

0:00:590:01:03

This morning, something amazing happened.

0:01:030:01:07

The chrysalis opened up.

0:01:110:01:14

And out came...a butterfly!

0:01:220:01:26

Isn't it the most incredible thing,

0:01:290:01:31

that change from caterpillar to butterfly?

0:01:310:01:35

I've put the butterfly in here with its friend to show you

0:01:350:01:39

before I let them fly away. Let's have a closer look.

0:01:390:01:42

Butterflies have four wings. One, two, three, four.

0:01:420:01:48

Sometimes, you can see butterflies sunbathing,

0:01:480:01:51

opening their wings to warm them in the sun.

0:01:510:01:55

Butterflies have six legs and two antennae,

0:01:550:01:59

which they use for sensing the world around them.

0:01:590:02:04

Butterflies feed by sucking through a thing called a proboscis,

0:02:040:02:09

which is like a long drinking straw.

0:02:090:02:12

They drink nectar from flowers, but this one is drinking orange juice!

0:02:120:02:17

Look at the way the proboscis rolls up and then unwinds.

0:02:170:02:22

That's a great word, isn't it? "Proboscis".

0:02:220:02:26

Have you seen a butterfly where you live?

0:02:260:02:28

There's sure to be one nearby. Shall we go and find one?

0:02:280:02:33

Come on!

0:02:330:02:34

Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:410:02:47

-Hi, Joseph. Hi, Florence.

-Hi, Jess!

-Great to see you.

0:02:520:02:57

Today, we're going on a butterfly adventure.

0:02:570:03:00

And a spider adventure. And a flower adventure.

0:03:000:03:04

-All of those minibeasts are things we might see...

-And a worm.

0:03:040:03:08

Who knows what we're going to see? Get your feelers ready.

0:03:080:03:11

Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:110:03:14

We're off on a Minibeast Adventure! Come on, then!

0:03:140:03:19

Can you see any? Oh, look!

0:03:260:03:29

-There, I see it!

-Butterfly!

0:03:290:03:32

There's a butterfly right here, look. Isn't that beautiful?

0:03:320:03:37

-It's orange and black.

-Where did the white one fly?

0:03:370:03:42

There was a white one there, this one is orange and black.

0:03:420:03:46

-What about that one?

-That's a bee.

-Bees collect pollen to make honey.

0:03:460:03:52

That's exactly right, bees do collect pollen to make honey!

0:03:520:03:56

-I don't see any.

-You have to look really, really carefully.

0:03:560:04:01

-There is one! I saw it. Now it's gone.

-I missed it.

0:04:010:04:07

Did you see it, Joseph?

0:04:070:04:09

I missed it. What colour was it, Florence? It was a white one.

0:04:090:04:13

-Another white butterfly. Lovely.

-How about vegetables?

0:04:130:04:19

-A vegetables butterfly?

-Yes.

-What butterflies live on vegetables?

0:04:190:04:24

Black or white.

0:04:240:04:26

That's so right - there is a butterfly that lives on cabbages

0:04:260:04:31

called the cabbage white. And it's a white butterfly.

0:04:310:04:34

You're so smart, Florence.

0:04:340:04:37

-Do you know how butterflies eat from flowers?

-They eat honey.

0:04:370:04:41

That was right, did you see what Joseph just did?

0:04:410:04:44

And what Florence said was right as well.

0:04:440:04:46

They eat the honey, the nectar, from the middle of the flowers,

0:04:460:04:51

using what?

0:04:510:04:52

Exactly like that! With their long tongues, like this.

0:04:520:04:57

Is your tongue as long as a butterfly?

0:05:000:05:03

Butterflies' tongues are so long that they have to curl them up

0:05:030:05:07

to put them in their mouth.

0:05:070:05:10

-Can you imagine that?

-Why do they have to curl them up?

0:05:100:05:14

Because their tongues are so long, like this long,

0:05:140:05:17

-so they have to curl it up to put it inside their mouth.

-Like this.

0:05:170:05:22

Like that, yes, a bit like that. Oh!

0:05:220:05:26

-I saw one flew to a flower and then it did this.

-Really?

0:05:280:05:33

That's exactly what happens.

0:05:330:05:35

They fly like this to a flower, and they stop and drink

0:05:350:05:39

and shut their wings like that.

0:05:390:05:42

Butterfly, butterfly, eat some honey.

0:05:420:05:45

They don't eat honey!

0:05:470:05:49

They drink the nectar from the flower, that's what they do.

0:05:490:05:54

I'm flying to a flower, I've got my wings shut and I...

0:05:540:05:58

HE SLURPS

0:05:580:06:00

Ha-ha! Little butterflies!

0:06:000:06:02

How do you taste your food?

0:06:020:06:06

With your mouth and tongue, of course.

0:06:060:06:10

But a butterfly tastes its food with its feet.

0:06:100:06:13

Imagine doing that! Mum wouldn't be very pleased if you did.

0:06:160:06:22

If you want to attract butterflies, you can make a butterfly feeder.

0:06:240:06:29

We're making butterfly feeders that look like flowers!

0:06:290:06:32

Now, Florence and Joseph have decorated their petals

0:06:320:06:36

beautifully for their flowers, haven't you? That's lovely.

0:06:360:06:40

-I did a flower.

-You did a beautiful flower.

-And I did.

0:06:400:06:44

Those are your flowers, and we've got water bottles as the stems.

0:06:440:06:50

So, we're going to take our flowers and put them onto the stems,

0:06:500:06:55

like that. Can you do that?

0:06:550:06:57

Excellent, that's great. So, the flowers are on the stems.

0:06:590:07:03

-All that's left is... What do butterflies eat?

-Honey!

0:07:030:07:09

Honey, the nectar in the middle of the flowers.

0:07:090:07:12

So that's what we need next.

0:07:120:07:14

We need nectar for our butterflies to drink.

0:07:140:07:17

Would you like to choose a bit of cotton wool?

0:07:170:07:19

You push that just in the top of the bottle, not all the way in.

0:07:190:07:24

-Why?

-Because the bit that matters is this bit here.

0:07:250:07:29

I'm going to put some sweet sugar water on there which is

0:07:290:07:34

like nectar from flowers.

0:07:340:07:36

Do you think butterflies are going to come and drink this water?

0:07:360:07:40

It's very sweet. There. I think they're ready now.

0:07:400:07:44

-So, where shall we put our butterfly feeders?

-Over there!

-Come on then!

0:07:440:07:50

Now, all we have to do is wait for the butterflies to come

0:07:540:07:57

and eat from our feeders.

0:07:570:08:00

-Let's watch.

-Yes, let's watch.

0:08:000:08:03

I loved our butterfly adventure.

0:08:060:08:08

Making those feeders was so much fun.

0:08:080:08:10

Maybe you could have a butterfly adventure too.

0:08:100:08:14

Find a sunny, flowery spot and wait

0:08:140:08:16

and the butterflies will come to you.

0:08:160:08:20

Now, it's time to release my butterflies.

0:08:200:08:23

I hope they lay lots of eggs around here.

0:08:230:08:27

Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:390:08:41

Happy hunting, adventurers!
