With Jess!

0:00:400:00:41

Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:420:00:45

This minibeast has lots of legs.

0:00:450:00:48

Insects like ladybirds, butterflies and bees

0:00:480:00:51

have six legs.

0:00:510:00:52

Spiders have eight legs.

0:00:520:00:54

But this minibeast has even more than that.

0:00:540:00:57

It's a millipede.

0:00:580:01:00

And just look at all those legs.

0:01:000:01:03

Can you see them running along the bottom?

0:01:030:01:05

When you say the word 'millipede',

0:01:100:01:12

it sounds like they might have one million legs.

0:01:120:01:15

Million-pede.

0:01:150:01:16

But they don't actually have that many.

0:01:160:01:19

These ones have about 150,

0:01:190:01:21

and that's still a lot more than any other creature.

0:01:210:01:24

Millipedes are very good at burrowing.

0:01:260:01:29

They move their bodies like waves

0:01:290:01:31

and push themselves through the soil,

0:01:310:01:33

a bit like a worm.

0:01:330:01:35

A lot of people mix up millipedes with centipedes.

0:01:460:01:49

And they do look quite similar.

0:01:490:01:51

So, I've got both of them for us to have a look at.

0:01:510:01:54

There's quite a lot of differences.

0:01:540:01:56

Have a look at this centipede.

0:01:560:01:59

It's much flatter,

0:01:590:02:00

and its body comes in big sections.

0:02:000:02:03

Now, if we look at the millipede,

0:02:080:02:10

can you see it has much smaller sections,

0:02:100:02:13

and a lot more short legs,

0:02:130:02:15

like a brush underneath its body.

0:02:150:02:18

Centipedes are designed for speed

0:02:190:02:21

and like to rush around to hunt small insects.

0:02:210:02:24

But a millipede moves more slowly

0:02:240:02:27

and its legs move like a wave.

0:02:270:02:29

Centipedes are meat eaters

0:02:310:02:33

and eat insects and worms,

0:02:330:02:35

whilst millipedes are vegetarians

0:02:350:02:37

and eat dead wood, plants and leaves.

0:02:370:02:39

I think it's time we went to see if there's a millipede living near you.

0:02:400:02:44

We might have to look really carefully, as they're hiding

0:02:450:02:49

during the day.

0:02:490:02:50

Shall we give it a try?

0:02:510:02:53

Come on!

0:02:550:02:56

Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:040:03:08

-Hi, Mia. Hi, Talia.

-Hi, Jess.

-Hello, Jess.

0:03:140:03:17

Great to see you.

0:03:170:03:18

Today, we're off on a millipede adventure.

0:03:180:03:22

What's a millipede?

0:03:220:03:23

A millipede is long and wiggly, a bit like a worm,

0:03:230:03:27

but it's got lots and lots of legs and a hard shell.

0:03:270:03:30

Are we going to find one?

0:03:300:03:32

I hope so.

0:03:320:03:33

Shall we get our feelers ready?

0:03:330:03:35

-ALL:

-Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:350:03:39

We're off on a minibeast adventure.

0:03:390:03:42

-Do you think there might be a millipede down here?

-Yep.

0:03:490:03:52

Where do you think a millipede lives?

0:03:520:03:55

Down, down, down and down.

0:03:550:03:57

Down, down, down, on the floor.

0:03:570:03:59

You've got to dig for this.

0:03:590:04:00

What's that?!

0:04:000:04:02

BOTH: A spider!

0:04:020:04:03

Wow, isn't that beautiful?

0:04:030:04:05

It made a spider web.

0:04:050:04:06

-How many legs does a spider have?

-Eight.

0:04:060:04:09

And we are looking for an animal that has even more legs than eight.

0:04:090:04:13

Then more...more than 200.

0:04:130:04:16

-Shall we have a look over there?

-Yep.

-Come on, then.

0:04:160:04:19

I think we have to dig for some.

0:04:230:04:25

-BOTH:

-Ah!

0:04:260:04:29

-Two worms!

-No, those are not worms,

0:04:290:04:31

-although they look like worms.

-They're centipedes!

0:04:310:04:34

No, these are what we were looking for.

0:04:340:04:37

These are millipedes.

0:04:370:04:39

MIA SCREAMS

0:04:390:04:40

And another one!

0:04:400:04:42

-Can I hold it?

-Yeah.

0:04:420:04:43

What does it feel like?

0:04:430:04:46

SHE SCREAMS

0:04:460:04:47

It feels tickly.

0:04:470:04:49

Ha-ha.

0:04:490:04:51

-Would you like to hold it, Talia?

-It's not scary.

0:04:510:04:54

-Take it.

-You don't want to?

0:04:540:04:55

-Do you want to have a really close look at it?

-Yeah.

0:04:550:04:58

OK, let me get a box out of my kit bag.

0:04:580:05:00

So, you're going to see it really closely.

0:05:000:05:03

Wow.

0:05:030:05:04

There you go, Talia. Look through there, it's magnified.

0:05:040:05:07

It has these things.

0:05:070:05:08

It does have those things, feelers.

0:05:080:05:11

What do you think it feels with its feelers?

0:05:110:05:13

My one's trying to climb up to get out.

0:05:130:05:16

Oh.

0:05:160:05:17

Shall we see how they walk?

0:05:190:05:20

-Yeah.

-Shall we put one in here?

0:05:200:05:22

They walk strange.

0:05:260:05:28

Look at its legs!

0:05:280:05:30

So many.

0:05:300:05:32

Ha-ha, loads of legs.

0:05:320:05:33

They actually have got lots of legs. Bleurgh.

0:05:350:05:38

How many legs do you think?

0:05:380:05:40

199.

0:05:400:05:42

-199? That could be quite accurate.

-Wow.

0:05:420:05:45

-Can I hold it again?

-Yes, of course you can.

0:05:450:05:48

-I like holding it.

-Do you?

0:05:480:05:50

-Yeah.

-Look, they are walking with their legs.

0:05:500:05:54

-Are they good at walking?

-Yes, I think so.

0:05:540:05:56

Well, they are. Not think so - I think they are.

0:05:560:05:59

No, not think so - they are!

0:05:590:06:01

-Ha-ha.

-They are very clever at walking.

0:06:010:06:05

How do you breathe?

0:06:070:06:08

You use your nose and mouth.

0:06:110:06:13

But a millipede breathes through holes along the side of its body.

0:06:150:06:19

Ha-ha.

0:06:230:06:24

Sometimes it can seem like there's no minibeasts about at all.

0:06:290:06:33

That's because minibeasts love to hide,

0:06:330:06:35

and if you look beneath the surface, there might be something hiding.

0:06:350:06:39

I'm going to take a scoop from Mia's garden to see what we can find.

0:06:390:06:43

Shall we see what's hiding in your garden, Mia?

0:06:460:06:50

-A snail.

-Is there a snail? Where?

0:06:500:06:53

Oh, yes!

0:06:530:06:55

Shall we put that in here to have a look at it?

0:06:550:06:58

-It's a baby one.

-I think...

-Look! It's blowing bubbles!

0:06:580:07:02

-Wow, it is! Can you see that, Mia?

-ALL:

-Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

0:07:020:07:05

-Look!

-Eurgh!

0:07:070:07:09

Wow!

0:07:090:07:10

Ha-ha-ha.

0:07:100:07:12

Some people call them daddy-longlegs.

0:07:120:07:15

-Cos they've got long legs.

-My dad calls it that.

-Does he?

0:07:150:07:18

That's called a harvestman.

0:07:180:07:20

Eugh, slug.

0:07:200:07:22

-No, it's a worm.

-That is a slug.

0:07:220:07:24

Urgh.

0:07:240:07:26

I thought it was a snail.

0:07:260:07:28

-What is that?

-Earwig, I think.

0:07:280:07:30

Oh, it is the same colour as an earwig.

0:07:300:07:32

That one is called a centipede.

0:07:320:07:35

-I told you.

-Did you?

-You said it isn't a centipede.

0:07:350:07:38

-You said it was an earwig.

-Oh, yes, I said it was an earwig.

0:07:380:07:42

-BOTH:

-Aw.

0:07:420:07:43

-They're so little.

-Does anyone know what that is?

0:07:430:07:46

-A woodlice.

-A woodlouse.

0:07:460:07:48

I found something.

0:07:480:07:50

What is that?!

0:07:500:07:52

A centipede.

0:07:520:07:53

Oh, not a centipede.

0:07:530:07:55

Millipede.

0:07:550:07:57

What a lot of minibeasts we found in your garden.

0:07:570:08:01

And the last thing we found was this lovely millipede, wasn't it?

0:08:010:08:04

Yeah.

0:08:040:08:06

This is cool.

0:08:060:08:07

I loved that minibeast adventure.

0:08:120:08:14

It's amazing how many creatures you can find, wherever you live.

0:08:140:08:18

Maybe you could go on a millipede adventure too.

0:08:180:08:21

There's sure to be one living near you.

0:08:210:08:23

Look in dark, damp places.

0:08:230:08:25

A grown-up adventurer might need to lift things up

0:08:250:08:28

to look underneath.

0:08:280:08:30

Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:300:08:32

Happy hunting, adventurers.
