With Jess! | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
Welcome to my tree house. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
This minibeast has lots of legs. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Insects like ladybirds, butterflies and bees | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
have six legs. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
Spiders have eight legs. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
But this minibeast has even more than that. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
It's a millipede. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
And just look at all those legs. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Can you see them running along the bottom? | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
When you say the word 'millipede', | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
it sounds like they might have one million legs. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Million-pede. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
But they don't actually have that many. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
These ones have about 150, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
and that's still a lot more than any other creature. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
Millipedes are very good at burrowing. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
They move their bodies like waves | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
and push themselves through the soil, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
a bit like a worm. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
A lot of people mix up millipedes with centipedes. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
And they do look quite similar. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
So, I've got both of them for us to have a look at. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
There's quite a lot of differences. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Have a look at this centipede. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
It's much flatter, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
and its body comes in big sections. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Now, if we look at the millipede, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
can you see it has much smaller sections, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
and a lot more short legs, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
like a brush underneath its body. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
Centipedes are designed for speed | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
and like to rush around to hunt small insects. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
But a millipede moves more slowly | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and its legs move like a wave. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
Centipedes are meat eaters | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
and eat insects and worms, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
whilst millipedes are vegetarians | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
and eat dead wood, plants and leaves. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
I think it's time we went to see if there's a millipede living near you. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
We might have to look really carefully, as they're hiding | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
during the day. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
Shall we give it a try? | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
Come on! | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure! | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
-Hi, Mia. Hi, Talia. -Hi, Jess. -Hello, Jess. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Great to see you. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
Today, we're off on a millipede adventure. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
What's a millipede? | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
A millipede is long and wiggly, a bit like a worm, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
but it's got lots and lots of legs and a hard shell. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
Are we going to find one? | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
I hope so. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
Shall we get our feelers ready? | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
-ALL: -Feelers out, what's about? | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
We're off on a minibeast adventure. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
-Do you think there might be a millipede down here? -Yep. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Where do you think a millipede lives? | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Down, down, down and down. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Down, down, down, on the floor. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
You've got to dig for this. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:00
What's that?! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
BOTH: A spider! | 0:04:02 | 0:04:03
Wow, isn't that beautiful? | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
It made a spider web. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:06
-How many legs does a spider have? -Eight. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
And we are looking for an animal that has even more legs than eight. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
Then more...more than 200. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
-Shall we have a look over there? -Yep. -Come on, then. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
I think we have to dig for some. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
-BOTH: -Ah! | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
-Two worms! -No, those are not worms, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
-although they look like worms. -They're centipedes! | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
No, these are what we were looking for. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
These are millipedes. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
MIA SCREAMS | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
And another one! | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
-Can I hold it? -Yeah. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:43
What does it feel like? | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
SHE SCREAMS | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
It feels tickly. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
Ha-ha. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
-Would you like to hold it, Talia? -It's not scary. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
-Take it. -You don't want to? | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
-Do you want to have a really close look at it? -Yeah. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
OK, let me get a box out of my kit bag. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
So, you're going to see it really closely. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
Wow. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:04 | |
There you go, Talia. Look through there, it's magnified. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
It has these things. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:08
It does have those things, feelers. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
What do you think it feels with its feelers? | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
My one's trying to climb up to get out. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
Oh. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:17 | |
Shall we see how they walk? | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20
-Yeah. -Shall we put one in here? | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
They walk strange. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
Look at its legs! | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
So many. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
Ha-ha, loads of legs. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:33
They actually have got lots of legs. Bleurgh. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
How many legs do you think? | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
199. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42 | |
-199? That could be quite accurate. -Wow. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
-Can I hold it again? -Yes, of course you can. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
-I like holding it. -Do you? | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
-Yeah. -Look, they are walking with their legs. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
-Are they good at walking? -Yes, I think so. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Well, they are. Not think so - I think they are. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
No, not think so - they are! | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
-Ha-ha. -They are very clever at walking. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
How do you breathe? | 0:06:07 | 0:06:08
You use your nose and mouth. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
But a millipede breathes through holes along the side of its body. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
Ha-ha. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:24
Sometimes it can seem like there's no minibeasts about at all. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
That's because minibeasts love to hide, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
and if you look beneath the surface, there might be something hiding. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
I'm going to take a scoop from Mia's garden to see what we can find. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
Shall we see what's hiding in your garden, Mia? | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
-A snail. -Is there a snail? Where? | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
Oh, yes! | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
Shall we put that in here to have a look at it? | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
-It's a baby one. -I think... -Look! It's blowing bubbles! | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
-Wow, it is! Can you see that, Mia? -ALL: -Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
-Look! -Eurgh! | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
Wow! | 0:07:09 | 0:07:10 | |
Ha-ha-ha. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
Some people call them daddy-longlegs. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
-Cos they've got long legs. -My dad calls it that. -Does he? | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
That's called a harvestman. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
Eugh, slug. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
-No, it's a worm. -That is a slug. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
Urgh. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26 | |
I thought it was a snail. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
-What is that? -Earwig, I think. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
Oh, it is the same colour as an earwig. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
That one is called a centipede. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
-I told you. -Did you? -You said it isn't a centipede. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
-You said it was an earwig. -Oh, yes, I said it was an earwig. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
-BOTH: -Aw. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:43
-They're so little. -Does anyone know what that is? | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
-A woodlice. -A woodlouse. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
I found something. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
What is that?! | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
A centipede. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
Oh, not a centipede. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
Millipede. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
What a lot of minibeasts we found in your garden. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
And the last thing we found was this lovely millipede, wasn't it? | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
Yeah. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06 | |
This is cool. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:07
I loved that minibeast adventure. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
It's amazing how many creatures you can find, wherever you live. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
Maybe you could go on a millipede adventure too. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
There's sure to be one living near you. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
Look in dark, damp places. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
A grown-up adventurer might need to lift things up | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
to look underneath. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
Feelers out, what's about? | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Happy hunting, adventurers. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34 |
