I'm very lucky in my tree house

0:00:440:00:46

that lots of spiders have decided to make their homes here.

0:00:460:00:51

And this is my special spider friend, Sophie.

0:00:510:00:54

Sophie is so happy here that she's even decided to lay some eggs.

0:00:560:01:01

I can't wait till they hatch

0:01:010:01:02

and there's lots of tiny spiderlings around.

0:01:020:01:06

I know that lots of people think spiders are scary,

0:01:060:01:10

but Sophie and I are here to tell you they're not.

0:01:100:01:13

They're amazing.

0:01:130:01:15

And actually they're quite shy, and tend to hide away from people.

0:01:150:01:19

In some countries, spiders are considered good luck.

0:01:190:01:23

So let's take a closer look at how brilliant Sophie really is.

0:01:230:01:27

Like all spiders, she has eight legs.

0:01:270:01:31

Spiders can also have up to eight eyes.

0:01:320:01:35

Can you see Sophie's eyes?

0:01:350:01:38

She has six.

0:01:380:01:39

And look at the hairs on her legs.

0:01:420:01:45

She uses those hairs to sense movements in her web.

0:01:450:01:49

But not all spiders make webs.

0:01:580:02:00

Some catch insects by chasing them, like wolves.

0:02:000:02:03

Come and have a look.

0:02:030:02:05

Here's another special spider friend of mine. This is Nancy.

0:02:060:02:11

Isn't she beautiful?

0:02:110:02:13

Some people think she looks a bit scary

0:02:130:02:16

but there is really no reason to be scared of her.

0:02:160:02:19

So let's take a closer look.

0:02:190:02:21

Wolf spiders and house spiders don't have webs,

0:02:230:02:26

so they have to chase insects to catch and eat them.

0:02:260:02:29

Look how fast Nancy is.

0:02:320:02:35

And she has really good eyesight too.

0:02:350:02:38

I wonder if there is a Sophie or a Nancy living near you.

0:02:410:02:45

Shall we go and see?

0:02:450:02:47

Come on.

0:02:470:02:48

Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:02:560:03:01

-Hi, Noaz, hi, Katima.

-Hiya.

-Hello.

0:03:060:03:10

I'm so happy you're here

0:03:100:03:12

because today we're going on a spider adventure!

0:03:120:03:15

-Have you ever seen a spider before?

-BOTH:

-Yeah.

0:03:150:03:17

-Where do you think we might find them?

-Over there.

-Down there?

0:03:170:03:21

Come on, then. Get your feelers ready.

0:03:210:03:24

-ALL:

-Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:240:03:27

We're off on a minibeast adventure! Let's go.

0:03:270:03:30

Where do spiders live?

0:03:340:03:37

-Um, in...

-Spider webs.

0:03:370:03:40

Yeah, spider webs.

0:03:400:03:41

In spider webs?

0:03:410:03:44

-Can you see any spider's webs anywhere?

-There.

0:03:440:03:48

-Where?

-Right there.

0:03:480:03:50

-Are there any spiders in it?

-Um, just take it.

0:03:500:03:55

Oh, I can see it, look. Sssh.

0:03:550:03:59

-SHE WHISPERS:

-It's right there at the back.

0:03:590:04:02

-It's at the back. Can you see?

-I can't see.

0:04:020:04:04

-Did you see it move?

-Yeah!

-Wow. What do you think she's doing?

0:04:040:04:09

Trying to catch flies.

0:04:090:04:11

Find them right over there.

0:04:110:04:13

That's pretty, isn't it?

0:04:150:04:17

I think it looks striped like a tiger.

0:04:170:04:21

-What about that one up there?

-Yes!

0:04:210:04:25

-I think it looks like a monster.

-Like a monster?

0:04:250:04:29

Yeah, like a monster.

0:04:290:04:31

-There's another one here!

-Oh, wow. What's her web like?

0:04:310:04:35

-Like a trampoline.

-It does look a bit like a trampoline!

0:04:360:04:41

-Why have they made so many webs?

-So they can catch flies.

0:04:410:04:45

So they can catch flies to eat, yeah.

0:04:450:04:48

There are some spiders called wolf spiders that live under logs.

0:04:480:04:53

Should we have a look under this log to see if we can find any?

0:04:530:04:57

I'm going to lift this up and I need you to look really carefully

0:04:570:05:01

and tell me if you spot any spiders, OK?

0:05:010:05:04

-Go!

-I saw one.

-Where?

-There.

0:05:040:05:08

Wow.

0:05:080:05:10

-What is that white thing? Have you got any idea?

-A bum.

0:05:120:05:16

It does look like a bum, doesn't it?

0:05:160:05:18

That's actually her eggs!

0:05:180:05:20

Her baby spiders are going to come out of there.

0:05:200:05:23

-Why is the spider not putting it down?

-The eggs?

0:05:230:05:27

-Yeah.

-That's so they hatch safely so she protects them until they hatch.

0:05:270:05:33

Is that a bag in there?

0:05:330:05:35

We call it an egg sac and it's like a bag full of baby spiders.

0:05:350:05:39

One day the bag opens and there's lots of tiny, tiny,

0:05:390:05:43

little spiders and they run everywhere.

0:05:430:05:46

-and make their own...

-Spider webs?

0:05:460:05:48

This type of spider doesn't make a spider web.

0:05:480:05:51

That's why it hides under logs. Let's put her back.

0:05:510:05:55

-ALL:

-Bye-bye, spider.

0:06:000:06:02

A spider builds a web in about an hour.

0:06:060:06:09

Imagine if you could build a home that quickly.

0:06:150:06:19

Wow!

0:06:230:06:24

So now we thought we'd make our own web.

0:06:260:06:29

I've started us off here with some bits of the web,

0:06:290:06:32

-but what should we add on next?

-I don't know.

0:06:320:06:36

-Should we go around here like this?

-Yes.

0:06:360:06:38

Do you think you can do that, Katima?

0:06:380:06:41

Put that through there

0:06:410:06:44

and around like that,

0:06:440:06:45

and then you've got the next bit.

0:06:470:06:49

Do you think you can do that here? Go on, here you go.

0:06:490:06:53

Brilliant! Pass it to Noaz.

0:06:540:06:57

Katima.

0:07:010:07:02

It's really starting to look like a spider web now, isn't it?

0:07:050:07:10

How long do you think it takes a spider to make a spider web?

0:07:140:07:19

-30 minutes?

-30 minutes? Some of them probably could do it in 30 minutes.

0:07:190:07:24

They're quite quick at it.

0:07:240:07:26

Katima, where are you going to put it next?

0:07:270:07:31

-OK.

-I want to climb on it.

-Do you think it would be strong enough?

0:07:310:07:35

-Yes.

-Oh, I don't know.

0:07:350:07:38

Spider silk is very, very, very strong, but wool...

0:07:380:07:43

I'm not sure you could climb up wool.

0:07:430:07:45

That's why spiders are so amazing.

0:07:450:07:48

-Their webs are so strong they can climb up them.

-They're beautiful.

0:07:480:07:52

Oh, spiders are beautiful. What do you think of our spider web?

0:07:520:07:56

-It's very cool.

-It is cool, isn't it?

0:07:560:07:59

Wow, we really discovered how difficult it is to make

0:08:040:08:07

a spider's web, didn't we?

0:08:070:08:09

Sophie is such a clever minibeast.

0:08:090:08:12

Maybe you could have a spider adventure too.

0:08:120:08:15

Have a look for a web and see if you can see a spider hiding nearby.

0:08:150:08:20

Feelers out, what's about? Happy hunting, adventurers!
