With Jess!

0:00:400:00:42

Welcome to my treehouse! These minibeasts are brilliant hunters.

0:00:420:00:47

They've been around for millions and millions of years.

0:00:470:00:50

Since before the dinosaurs. Have a look.

0:00:500:00:53

These are centipedes. There's one!

0:00:540:00:57

It's got lots and lots of legs so it can run really fast.

0:00:570:01:01

Let's have a closer look.

0:01:030:01:05

Lots of people think centipedes have 100 legs,

0:01:050:01:09

but centipedes in this country usually have about 30.

0:01:090:01:13

With all those legs, you'd think they might trip up.

0:01:130:01:16

But cleverly, each pair of legs

0:01:160:01:18

is a little bit longer than the ones before.

0:01:180:01:20

Can you see?

0:01:200:01:22

Probably because they spend so much time in the dark,

0:01:250:01:28

centipedes don't have very good eyesight.

0:01:280:01:31

So they feel their way around using these antennae

0:01:310:01:35

at the front of their bodies.

0:01:350:01:37

They also have two extra-long legs at the back

0:01:390:01:41

that they use for feeling behind.

0:01:410:01:44

And these legs can also help them run backwards.

0:01:440:01:47

When a centipede goes hunting,

0:01:470:01:50

it catches smaller creatures with its two sharp claws at the front.

0:01:500:01:55

I think it's time we went on a hunt for these hunters.

0:01:580:02:01

I'm sure there's one living really near you,

0:02:010:02:03

although you might not have seen it because they sleep in the daytime.

0:02:030:02:07

Shall we go and look for a centipede?

0:02:070:02:09

Come on!

0:02:090:02:11

Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:02:190:02:23

-Hi, Keira. Hi, Evalina.

-BOTH: Hi, Jess!

0:02:290:02:32

Thank you for letting me come to your house.

0:02:320:02:34

-Today, we're having a centipede adventure!

-Whee!

-Yes!

0:02:340:02:38

-Have you ever seen a centipede?

-BOTH: Yes.

-What are they like?

0:02:380:02:42

They're very tickly when they walk all up your neck and your hand.

0:02:420:02:46

-Hopefully we'll do some of that today.

-And he makes me laugh.

0:02:460:02:49

-They make me laugh, too.

-And me because they tickle me.

0:02:490:02:52

They normally come out at night-time,

0:02:520:02:54

so we're going to have to find them where they're hiding.

0:02:540:02:57

That's likely to be somewhere damp and dark.

0:02:570:02:59

-Is there anywhere like that around here?

-A bush and mud!

-Brilliant!

0:02:590:03:05

Well, let's go and have a look, then. Get your feelers ready.

0:03:050:03:08

Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:080:03:12

We're off on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:120:03:15

Minibeasts love to hide, so I'm going to lift them up

0:03:220:03:25

and I want you to look under and tell me what you can see.

0:03:250:03:27

-OK? Ready?

-Yeah.

0:03:270:03:30

Action, now!

0:03:310:03:33

-Oh! What's that?

-That's a woodlouse!

0:03:340:03:37

That is a woodlouse.

0:03:370:03:40

-It's going to be tickly!

-Whee!

0:03:400:03:42

Can I hold it?

0:03:420:03:43

-There we go.

-Oh! It's tickly! Ah! Can I have it off now, please?

0:03:460:03:51

-Yeah. Do you want to hold this one?

-Yes.

0:03:510:03:54

-Now, you need to keep your hands very still.

-I held it.

0:03:540:03:57

-It's so tickly.

-It's so tickly! There you go.

0:03:570:04:00

I was so happy, wasn't I?

0:04:000:04:02

Ha-ha-ha! It's moving funny!

0:04:040:04:07

It's going around in circles.

0:04:090:04:11

That's what I meant.

0:04:110:04:13

They can curl up in balls and they've got curly lines on them.

0:04:130:04:19

Yes. They have got lines on their backs, haven't they?

0:04:190:04:23

Are you going to put it back?

0:04:240:04:27

-That's great. It's back with its friends now.

-That's a woodlouse.

0:04:270:04:30

I've seen something under here.

0:04:300:04:33

Come on, then, let's lift the next one up.

0:04:330:04:36

-Let's go around there.

-Look what I've found!

-What?

0:04:360:04:41

This. Look, that looked like a woodlouse or a centipede!

0:04:410:04:46

-Did it? Where?

-Look!

-Oh, that is a centipede!

-Wow!

0:04:460:04:51

Oh, my goodness! Right on top of the rock.

0:04:510:04:54

Oh, I've got a pot in my pocket. Be very careful, Keira.

0:04:540:04:57

You've got it! Put it in this pot.

0:04:570:05:00

-Wow! Well done!

-Put the lid on, put the lid on!

0:05:000:05:03

-Centipede!

-Would you like to hold it?

0:05:030:05:05

-Yes!

-I don't want it.

0:05:050:05:08

-No, just in the pot, like this.

-Oh, yeah.

0:05:080:05:10

It's very tickly when you hold it on your hand.

0:05:100:05:13

Yeah, they are tickly, aren't they?

0:05:130:05:15

It's silly. It's moving, like, really slow and it's silly. Look.

0:05:150:05:19

Can you see? It's moving silly.

0:05:190:05:22

LAUGHTER

0:05:220:05:25

-How many legs do you think it's got?

-100!

0:05:250:05:28

Ah, lots of people do think centipedes have 100 legs,

0:05:280:05:31

but actually, they have much less than that.

0:05:310:05:34

-What's that big long thing?

-Which long thing?

-That thing.

0:05:340:05:38

-These things that look like this?

-They're antennae.

0:05:380:05:41

Yes, they are, they're antennae!

0:05:410:05:44

BOTH: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.

0:05:440:05:50

17 on that side

0:05:500:05:52

and 17 on the other side,

0:05:520:05:56

so that makes 34 legs!

0:05:560:05:58

As you get older, your legs get longer.

0:06:000:06:03

But as a centipede gets older, it simply grows more legs.

0:06:070:06:12

Imagine if that happened to you.

0:06:120:06:14

LAUGHTER

0:06:140:06:16

We know centipedes come out at night,

0:06:180:06:20

so we thought we'd make them a cosy centipede corner

0:06:200:06:23

to hide in during the day.

0:06:230:06:26

Which of these things do you think they'd like in their cosy corner?

0:06:260:06:29

-Er...this!

-Yeah, OK.

0:06:290:06:31

So, shall we make it here, under this tree?

0:06:310:06:33

I think that would be a nice place for them to hide.

0:06:330:06:36

You're going to put moss in? That looks great.

0:06:360:06:38

I think they'd love to hide under that.

0:06:380:06:40

-Um...he can go under this stone.

-Yeah.

0:06:400:06:45

When they come.

0:06:450:06:48

-Ooo!

-This!

-Yeah, you can put that in.

0:06:480:06:51

They come here. This can be, er...

0:06:530:06:59

-The step?

-Step.

-And the bridge.

0:06:590:07:02

Yeah, the bridge.

0:07:020:07:04

-OK.

-What about the grass?

-Grass.

0:07:040:07:08

-Yeah, you can put some of that on.

-A pillow!

0:07:080:07:10

Oh, that can be a pillow. Excellent! Where do we want to put this?

0:07:100:07:14

That's going to go there.

0:07:140:07:17

-That can be the pillow, actually.

-OK.

0:07:170:07:21

-Put those here.

-Yeah, that's nice!

0:07:230:07:26

And this is going to be the thing that they get up on.

0:07:260:07:31

-This can be their door, like that.

-OK.

-Yeah.

0:07:310:07:34

When they go inside, they can go, doo-doo-doo, doo-doo.

0:07:340:07:38

LAUGHTER

0:07:380:07:40

-What about this?

-That can be their radio.

0:07:400:07:44

Yeah, the radio!

0:07:440:07:46

Listen to jumpy music.

0:07:460:07:49

What do centipedes listen to? What sort of music?

0:07:490:07:52

-Um...rap music.

-Rap music?

0:07:520:07:55

OK, that can be the radio for the centipedes' rap music.

0:07:550:07:58

That looks great!

0:07:580:08:00

I think they're going to love their cosy centipede corner!

0:08:000:08:03

-Shall we put a centipede in now?

-Yes.

-Now.

0:08:030:08:06

-Put him in there! Put him in there because that's really soft.

-OK.

0:08:060:08:11

-Come on.

-Bye-bye. Bye, centipede.

0:08:110:08:16

So let's leave that alone now and see how many centipedes

0:08:170:08:21

and other minibeasts come and move in.

0:08:210:08:23

I loved that minibeast adventure.

0:08:240:08:27

And that amazing palace Evalina and Keira made for their centipedes.

0:08:270:08:31

Maybe you could have a centipede adventure, too.

0:08:310:08:34

There's a very good chance there's a centipede living right near you.

0:08:340:08:37

Maybe you could make a cosy centipede home for it to move into.

0:08:370:08:42

Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:420:08:44

Happy hunting, adventurers!
