Welcome to my tree house. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Maybe you've seen one of these before. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
It's called a woodlouse. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
They look a bit like sea creatures, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
like crabs or lobsters. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
But woodlice live a long way from the sea, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
in places like my garden. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
Let's have a closer look. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
It looks like it's wearing a suit of armour, doesn't it? | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
We have bones inside us. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
You can feel them under your skin. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Go on, have a feel. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
That's your skeleton. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
Well, a woodlouse has its skeleton on the outside. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
That hard shell is its skeleton | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
and protects it, just like a suit of armour. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Can you see how its shell is made up of lots of bits that overlap? | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
They help the woodlice to bend. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
Some woodlice can even curl up into a tiny ball if they're in danger. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
Woodlice have two antennae at the front to help them | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
find their way around. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
They do have eyes, but they don't see very well, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
so they explore their world with these antennae. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
They like to live in damp, dark places | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
and eat rotting plants and wood, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
so they're one of nature's recyclers. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
They don't like the light, and usually hide in the day | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
and come out at night. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
I'm sure there's one hiding near you. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Shall we go and find it? | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
Come on. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure! | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
Hi, James. Hi, Betsy. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
-Hi, Jess. -Hi, Jess. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Fantastic to see you. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
Today, we're going on a woodlouse adventure. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
Do you know what a woodlouse is? | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
-No. -No? | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
They're minibeasts that like damp, dark places. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
-Do you know anywhere like that around here? -I do. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
Do you? Where? | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
It's over where the raspberries are. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Next to the raspberries? | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Shall we go and have a look, then? | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
-Yes. -Get your feelers ready. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
ALL: Feelers out, what's about? | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
We're off on a minibeast adventure! Come on. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
-Can you see anything? -I might think under here. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
-OK, let's have a look under there. -I think it's in the balls. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
I found a little, little snail. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
Oh, that's tiny! | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
-Wow, do you know what they are? -No. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
These are earwigs. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
Ew. Do they live in ears? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
They don't live in ears, at all. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
They live in houses and they live in gardens. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
On their back is a hook. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:42
Yeah. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44 | |
What do you think those hooks are for? | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
I don't know. They pinch. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
Yeah, they're for pinching. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
So, they can use them for pinching food, or if they're scared, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
they can use them for pinching whatever's scaring them. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
-Do you think we should put this back, now? -Yeah. -OK. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
Now, to find woodlice, we need to look UNDER something. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
-So, where are there some more things we could look under? -I know! | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
-The plant pots. -Oh, where are they? | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
-They're over there. -Come on, then. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
Oh! | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22 | |
Look at that. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
We found what we were looking for. This is a woodlouse. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
His legs are funny. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
-How many has it got? -I don't know. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
James, would you like to look with a magnifying glass | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
-to count how many legs it's got? -Yeah. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
-Seven? Seven on this side? -Can I look at it? | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
And seven on the other side. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
So, that means it's got 14 legs! | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
Wow, look. What are those things on the front of its face? | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
-Antennae. -Antennae, yes. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
That's exactly what they are. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
Shall we put it in the tray to have a closer look? | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
-Yeah. -Yeah. -OK. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:02
-There we go. -I found another one of them. -Did you? Where? | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
Oh, you're right, Betsy! There's a whole family of them down there. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
Oh, we can have a really good look at them in this tray. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
Can you see those? What are they? | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
They're baby beetles. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
Oh, they do look like baby beetles, don't they? | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
But they're actually baby woodlice. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
-Aren't they tiny? -Like... | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
Woodlice are really, really good mummies. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
-They look after their babies. -What about the sisters? | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
Well, they're all brothers and sisters, probably. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
They probably all come from the same mummy. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
Oh, they're so sweet. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
When you have had a big drink, you'll probably want to go to the toilet. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:59
But however much a woodlouse drinks, it never does a wee. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
Instead, its shell lets out a smelly gas. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
Phewie! | 0:06:09 | 0:06:10
Now that we know that woodlice like damp, dark places, | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
-I thought we could make them a woodlouse castle. -That would be fun. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
It will be fun, won't it? | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
We've collected some things that we think woodlice | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
might like to hide in. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
-Shall we make a pile here to make a woodlouse castle? -OK. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
What about this for the door? | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
Yeah, that's perfect. So, put the door at the front. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
-Here it is. -What else can we put in? -This. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
And that could be the stairs. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
OK, that can be can be the stairs. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
Shall we put them flat, though? | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
Then there's more space for the woodlice to hide. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
-Should we put some woodlice food in? -OK. -Go on, then. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
Put it down here, shall we? | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
Because remember, the woodlice hide under, | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
so all the woodlice are going to be under here. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
I might even turn this, this way | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
so they've got more space to hide underneath. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
Do you think that'd be better? | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
Yes. It might be for the bed. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
Yeah, this can be the bed. Perfect. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
-Feel that. -That feels soft. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
Feels like perfect woodlouse food. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
-And it's sticky. -It is a bit sticky. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
Would you like to put that in, James? | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
-This? -Yes, perfect. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
For the roof? | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
OK, put it on the top, then. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
Look at this, it's crumbling. Oh! | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
-There's a woodlouse already in there, look. -Where? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
There, can you see it? | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
We've definitely chosen the right bits for our woodlouse castle. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
What about this? | 0:07:43 | 0:07:44
-That would be up there. -Oh, look, it's crawling over the top. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
Oh, they love our castle. We've done such a good job. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
Can I get the woodlice out? | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
Yeah, and put it in the castle somewhere and see what they think. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
Do you think they've got lots of places to hide? | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
-Yes. -Where can they hide? | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
-Under their beds. -Brilliant. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
Oh, I think the love their castle. Do you think they're happy? | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
-I think they are happy with us making the castle. -Yeah. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
I loved that minibeast adventure and the great castle that | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
Betsy and James made for their woodlice. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
Maybe you could go on a woodlice adventure, too. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
There's definitely a woodlouse near you. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
Look in damp places, like under pots and stones. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
You could even make a castle for your woodlice, like we did. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
Feelers out, what's about? Happy hunting, adventurers! | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39 |
