Get ready for an arty adventure

around the world!

Today, we're off to Australia

to show you how to make a recycled robot

in under a minute.

Find out how to make your own toy canal boat

as we make a brilliant, big picture in the countryside.

But first, it's time for a fabulous firework party in South America.

Try making a pipe cleaner firework picture

and your making time will go with a bang.

But first, we'll need somewhere to make it.

Now we just need some arty things to make our picture.

We don't need one of your joke milkshakes, thank you.

But we do need a paper plate. Can you find me one?

Brilliant, we've got everything we need.

Although, it does feel like something's missing.

and you're just in time to help me make our picture!

It's a really colourful pipe cleaner firework picture.

-So, Liam, are you ready?

-Yeah.

Great! Are you ready?

Fantastic, let's get making!

Now, Liam, this picture can get a little bit messy.

So it's a good idea to put down some newspaper first

AND I think we should put on some aprons.

So follow me, my friend.

Excellent! We look great.

Let's find our pipe cleaners.

Help me count these pipe cleaners, Liam.

We've got...

One, two, three, four,

five, six, seven.

Seven! That's right!

Now, Liam, you hold on to one of those for me.

Let's push the pipe cleaners together

and twist them in the middle.

Liam, can I please have that other pipe cleaner?

Thank you.

We can use this one to twist around the middle like this.

Now, that makes a handle.

Now, we can spread out all the loose ends to make bendy, curly shapes.

BOING!

Excellent! Liam, what do you think this looks like?

-A spider.

-It does look like a spider.

You look after our spider there.

Cos now it's time to bring in some paper.

What we're going to do,

is we're going to cover this in a layer of coloured chalk.

Just rub brightly-coloured chalk across the paper

in different colours.

BOING!

Until you have lots of coloured stripes!

Use your fingers to smudge all of the chalky stripes together.

BOING!

We've finished smudging and now we have a sky

for the background of our picture.

Let's just put it to one side

cos now we're going to make some fireworks!

Can you pass me a paper plate, please, Liam?

Thank you. And we're going to squirt some paint onto this.

Just add a squirt in the middle,

with lots of brightly-coloured rings around it.

There.

Now, Liam, can you put that bottle back for me, please?

Cos I've got a very important job for you.

Can you take this plate of paint...?

Like that.

And find our spider that we made earlier.

And very gently push all of the spider legs into the paint.

That's it.

Well done, Liam.

Let's bring our sky back in then.

We're going to very carefully pick up the spider and print

it onto the sky to make a shape that looks like an exploding firework.

Keep printing until you've filled your page.

BOING!

And then leave it to dry. And we've cleaned our hands again

cos we need our fingers.

Now, Liam, can you please squirt some white paint

onto that plate for me, please?

Well done, my friend.

Now dip your finger into the paint

and use it to paint extra dotty explosions onto the picture.

-BOING!

-We've finished, Liam.

And it's also time to do the robot.

WHIRRING

Well done, everyone.

Nice robot moves.

And the reason we're all doing the robot is because of this!

It's what we're going to make today -

a recycled robot,

built out of all different bits and bobs.

And we build one by using these things.

We've got two small boxes.

A glue stick.

Some modelling clay.

Some plastic lids.

Some stickers.

And some glittery pipe cleaners.

Now, do you think it's possible

to make THIS recycled robot in just one minute?

ALL: Don't be silly!

Really, well, I think I can.

I will have to be very quick.

But don't worry, I'll remind you how to do it at the end.

-Are you ready?

-ALL: Yes!

Are you ready?

Brilliant, let's make it in a minute!

ALL: Three, two, one!

Start the clock!

The first thing we do

is build the parts of our robots.

So let's put on some stickers for eyes.

There's white stickers there.

Then we can put some black stickers

inside the white ones for the pupils.

There's one and another one there.

We're going to bring in some modelling clay.

Like this.

We're going to stick one of the pipe cleaners

and then stick that inside the head.

There we go.

Now, let's make some arms with these.

Bring in some more clay.

If we get these two pipe cleaners,

we can wind them around our finger

and then stick them in here like this.

This makes the robot's arms.

Start building our robot.

We're going to put glue everywhere.

Glue there, glue at the side,

glue there and glue at the bottom.

Then we stick everything together.

He's also got a tummy.

We've got some feet.

There he is, some feet there.

His arms at the side.

And his robot head.

-HORN BEEPS

-We've done it everyone.

KIDS: Yeah!

I did it just in time.

It's a recycled robot, made in a minute.

But if you've got MORE than a minute,

you could try these other ideas too.

How about a brightly-coloured robot with a round tube for a body?

Or you could even try a silver robot with lid eyes.

Why don't you try it?

Here's a reminder of how to do it.

Let's go back and take another look.

First, add stickers to a plastic lid for eyes.

Then push a pipe cleaner into modelling clay

and push this into the lid.

Twist two pipe cleaners and stick them inside two of the lids

with modelling clay to make arms.

Stick the boxes together.

Stick lids on the bottom for legs.

Stick the arms on the sides.

And, finally, stick on the head.

Your recycled robot is finished!

ALL: Boat picture!

A boat picture. Oh, I love boats.

-Is it going to be a very small boat?

-ALL: Big boat!

-How long is the boat going to be?

-This long.

Wow, that's very long.

-And what else will be in the picture?

-Blue sky.

-Sunny.

-Trees.

-Oh, lovely trees.

-Are we ready?

-ALL: YES!

Let's make it together.

BOTH: We're making the river.

This is a bridge.

BOTH: We're making trees.

And we need a hilly background.

That's it, let's put up the bridge.

Oh.

We're having great fun making our big picture.

And that's just given me an idea.

Why don't YOU make something too?

Try making your very own colourful canal boat

that's fun to play with.

You will need...

two boxes.

Glue.

Card paper and tissue paper.

A brush, stickers and a pencil.

Sticky tape and string.

First, glue a strip of card around a thin box, curving the end like this.

Then, stick your smaller box on top.

Cover the top part of the boat with gloopy glue

and pieces of tissue paper,

making sure you cover the gaps at either end.

Then leave it to dry.

Stick a thin piece of paper all around the boat like this.

Decorate the boat with card rectangles.

And stickers.

Now, carefully push a small pencil through the top of the box.

Ask an adult to help you with this.

Then, tape some wool, or string, to the front of the boat.

Wind it around the pencil...

and tape it to the other end of the boat.

Lastly, take some stickers and fold them

along the string to make brightly-coloured flags.

Your fantastic canal boat is finished and ready to play with.

What a great idea. Why don't you try it,

but right now, it looks like our Mini Makers are gardening.
