So I'm having a little rest before I get on with things.

One of the best things about a sunny day like this in the garden

is that you get to play with all the outdoor toys.

It won't work without batteries, no, cos that's where

it gets its energy from.

Oh, well, no batteries, we can't use the bubble machine. Shame.

But it doesn't matter because I've got the best outdoor toy of all -

Compo's full of energy today.

But what about plants? Where do they get their energy from, eh?

The sun.

From the sun, that's right.

The leaves collect all that energy and use it

to turn water and air into food.

Let's go and see what plants in my nursery

get their energy from the sun. Come on.

They're not getting very much sunshine, are they, Natasha?

No. And if they don't get sunshine,

they won't get any energy, will they?

What's getting in the way of the sunshine for these tomato plants?

The leaves.

Yeah, that... Tiddlers, where...? That is absolutely right.

Oh! It's this bushy plant, isn't it?

I think this plant has grown so big that it's hogging all the sunshine.

That means our little tomato plants are getting no energy at all.

What do you think we could do, Katie?

You could cut that one down.

We could give this plant a trim, couldn't we?

and for these tomato plants to get their energy.

It goes back hundreds of years to the Battle Of Pumpkin Field in 1148.
