This story belongs to James and Alana and their Grampa Dougie.

0:00:220:00:27

It's a tiny tale of Grampa Dougie's life

0:00:320:00:36

and the holidays he went on when he was a little boy.

0:00:360:00:40

Now it's time for him to share his memories

0:00:410:00:45

and take twins Alana and James on a journey of discovery.

0:00:450:00:50

It's holiday time and Grampa Dougie's back to take the twins

0:01:000:01:04

to a very special place close to his heart.

0:01:040:01:08

-Hi there, kids. Are you ready to go on your holidays?

-Yeah!

-Yeah!

0:01:090:01:14

-Are you sure?

-Yeah!

-Yeah!

-Have you got your buckets and spades?

-Here.

0:01:140:01:18

Have you got your bags? Let me see your bags. That's it.

0:01:180:01:23

Grampa's got his bag. He used to take it on his holidays.

0:01:230:01:26

Where did you go on your holiday when you were wee, Grampa?

0:01:260:01:31

We're going where I went when I was a wee boy,

0:01:310:01:34

-a place called Millport. Do you know how we get there?

-Across the water.

0:01:340:01:40

That's right. Across the water on a ferry.

0:01:400:01:43

OK. Are we ready? Off we go!

0:01:430:01:47

Grampa Dougie is taking Alana and James to Millport,

0:01:470:01:51

a town on the little island of Cumbrae,

0:01:510:01:54

not far from his hometown of Glasgow.

0:01:540:01:57

And look, here he is in Millport when he was a little boy.

0:02:050:02:10

The special thing about Millport, it's so near,

0:02:100:02:13

but it feels so far away,

0:02:130:02:15

because you go on the boat and go across the water.

0:02:150:02:18

You feel as though you're miles away from anywhere.

0:02:180:02:22

When we were wee, myself and my brothers, it was way before people

0:02:220:02:27

could go away on aeroplanes and fly all over the world

0:02:270:02:30

to places where it was always sunny.

0:02:300:02:34

We used to go places where it was quite often rainy.

0:02:340:02:37

The main thing is most people went on holiday to the seashore.

0:02:370:02:41

And guess where Grampa Dougie is taking Alana and James now.

0:02:450:02:49

On the very boat that he took to go on holiday when he was little,

0:02:490:02:52

the Waverley.

0:02:520:02:54

When I was little, my family never had a car.

0:02:540:02:57

When we went on holiday, we used to go on the train as far as it would go

0:02:570:03:03

-and then go on a paddle steamer.

-What's a paddle steamer?

0:03:030:03:06

A paddle steamer's a boat and it takes you across the sea

0:03:060:03:09

and do you know what? We're going on it today.

0:03:090:03:13

-Are you ready? Let's go!

-Yeah!

0:03:130:03:15

OK, on you go.

0:03:180:03:20

And off they go to Millport.

0:03:210:03:24

-The water's turning white!

-What?

-The water's all turning white!

0:03:250:03:30

-Bye-bye, Largs!

-Bye-bye!

0:03:320:03:35

The Waverley is the only paddle steamer in Britain

0:03:370:03:40

that can sail on the sea.

0:03:400:03:42

Grampa Dougie tells the twins all about the paddle steamer.

0:03:420:03:46

They're in the engine room.

0:03:480:03:51

Oh, that is noisy!

0:03:510:03:53

Grampa tells James and Alana all about the big engine.

0:03:530:03:58

The engine has to be huge and powerful to push the old boat.

0:03:580:04:04

There's the paddles, through the window.

0:04:040:04:08

Can you count them as they're going round?

0:04:080:04:11

The engine moves the big paddles round and round,

0:04:110:04:14

pushing the boat through the water.

0:04:140:04:17

And here they are in Millport.

0:04:270:04:30

It's goodbye to the Waverley, hello holidays!

0:04:300:04:33

-Did you enjoy the paddle steamer? BOTH:

-Yeah!

0:04:330:04:36

That's great. Come on, then.

0:04:360:04:39

When Grampa Dougie was a young boy,

0:04:540:04:56

people didn't fly to holidays in different countries.

0:04:560:05:00

Nearly everybody stayed at home. They took boats and trains instead

0:05:000:05:05

and went to the beaches and countryside near where they lived.

0:05:050:05:10

For Grampa Dougie, it was holidaying in Millport.

0:05:100:05:13

Many others in Scotland left the big cities

0:05:130:05:16

and took the train to board other boats

0:05:160:05:20

to other holiday towns. If the sun shone, that was great.

0:05:200:05:24

But even in the rain, everybody had fun.

0:05:240:05:27

Millport holds many happy memories for Grampa Dougie.

0:05:400:05:44

Look, here he is as a young man on holiday.

0:05:460:05:50

But the fun there stretches all the way back to his childhood.

0:05:500:05:55

-Do you know where we are now?

-No.

0:05:580:06:00

This is a house where I used to come when I was a wee boy for my holidays.

0:06:000:06:05

Up these stairs, into that house there.

0:06:050:06:08

And Grampa and his mummy and daddy and his brothers

0:06:080:06:12

all came here for a whole month in July in the summer.

0:06:120:06:17

And when Grampa Dougie grew up and got married, do you know what?

0:06:180:06:23

He took his family to Millport.

0:06:230:06:25

They've been going ever since for their summer holidays.

0:06:250:06:29

-When you come here, where do you stay?

-A caravan.

0:06:290:06:33

-In a caravan? Are you going to show me?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:06:330:06:36

Right, on we go, then.

0:06:360:06:38

And off they go to find out more.

0:06:490:06:52

-BOTH:

-This is my mummy!

0:06:520:06:56

And look! Here she is on holiday in Millport.

0:06:570:07:01

When I was a girl, we didn't stay in a house in the holidays.

0:07:010:07:05

We stayed in this caravan. Why don't we go in and show Grampa around?

0:07:050:07:09

It's been a while since he's been in it. Come on, let's go.

0:07:090:07:13

A caravan is just like a house, but in mini version.

0:07:130:07:18

This is the living room.

0:07:180:07:22

Oh, that's nice.

0:07:220:07:23

Oh, lovely!

0:07:230:07:25

What else can you show me?

0:07:250:07:27

The kitchen.

0:07:270:07:29

The kitchen? Do you cook dinner here?

0:07:290:07:32

-No, Mummy does.

-Mummy does!

0:07:320:07:36

This is the bedroom.

0:07:360:07:38

Oh, that's cosy!

0:07:380:07:39

What else is there?

0:07:390:07:41

This is the bathroom.

0:07:410:07:43

Oh! Lovely.

0:07:430:07:45

But there are some things that haven't changed

0:07:540:07:57

since Grampa Dougie was a little boy.

0:07:570:07:59

When he was young, everybody who went to Millport

0:07:590:08:03

cycled round the tiny island.

0:08:030:08:05

To this day, holidaymakers and day-trippers still do.

0:08:050:08:09

Now it's time for Alana and James to join in the fun

0:08:090:08:14

and give it some pedal power!

0:08:140:08:16

What a funny bike they've picked!

0:08:180:08:21

Look who's doing all the work, though!

0:08:210:08:25

It's an easy ride for James and Alana.

0:08:250:08:28

No peddling there!

0:08:280:08:30

Ah, there's the Crocodile Rock!

0:08:300:08:32

And it's in this old film, too!

0:08:320:08:35

And there's Grampa Dougie and his brothers sitting on it

0:08:360:08:40

when they were young.

0:08:400:08:42

For years, holidays in Millport meant walks along the promenade,

0:08:490:08:54

visiting the shops and playing on the beach.

0:08:540:08:58

But for cyclists, it also meant stopping off at a special cafe.

0:08:580:09:02

It was great for catching your breath halfway round the island.

0:09:020:09:07

People still visit it today,

0:09:070:09:09

including Grampa Dougie, Alana and James.

0:09:090:09:13

When I was a boy, I used to come to this cafe.

0:09:130:09:15

When I was cycling with my mummy and daddy, we stopped here for a drink.

0:09:150:09:20

-Would you like a drink? BOTH:

-Yeah.

0:09:200:09:23

Yeah? Well, when we came in for a drink,

0:09:230:09:26

I used to get a special iced drink, which is fizzy juice with ice cream.

0:09:260:09:30

-Would you like to try one? BOTH:

-Yeah.

0:09:300:09:33

Oh, look at this!

0:09:330:09:36

Oh!

0:09:360:09:38

Wow! They're enormous.

0:09:380:09:40

Ice cream and lemonade together!

0:09:400:09:45

Sounds great.

0:09:450:09:47

-Do you like that?

-Yeah!

0:09:470:09:50

Yummy!

0:09:510:09:54

A well-deserved break.

0:09:540:09:56

Oh, what's that?

0:10:080:10:10

Ah, it's a seal!

0:10:100:10:11

Now it's time for some fun on the beach.

0:10:120:10:15

Building sandcastles, of course.

0:10:150:10:18

When I was wee, I lived in a town. It was full of cars, buses and houses.

0:10:190:10:25

I used to love to come to the seaside,

0:10:250:10:27

and I used to play on the beach for hours and hours on end.

0:10:270:10:32

-What do you like to do on the beach?

-Make sandcastles.

0:10:320:10:35

-And you, James?

-Make sandcastles.

-Make sandcastles?

0:10:350:10:40

Grampa's favourite thing to do is to go to the rock pools.

0:10:400:10:43

-Would you like to go?

-Yeah!

0:10:430:10:46

Right! We need nets and buckets, OK?

0:10:460:10:49

Yeah.

0:10:490:10:51

On we go.

0:10:510:10:53

And off they go to find fishy things.

0:11:070:11:10

Come down here.

0:11:130:11:15

Who's got a bucket?

0:11:150:11:16

-Me.

-Me.

0:11:160:11:18

I'll put some water in it in case we catch anything.

0:11:180:11:21

And we have to put it in a bucket.

0:11:210:11:24

And another bucket.

0:11:240:11:26

That's good.

0:11:260:11:28

-Right. Now what we'll do... Will we look under our rock?

-Yeah.

0:11:280:11:34

Watch for anything moving.

0:11:340:11:37

Oh, I think I saw something there.

0:11:370:11:40

Let's try.

0:11:400:11:41

You might be in luck, Grampa.

0:11:430:11:46

Oh, it got away.

0:11:460:11:47

There!

0:11:470:11:49

-Oh, goodness me.

-What?

0:11:490:11:51

There's lots under here.

0:11:510:11:53

Can I see?

0:11:530:11:54

How many things are under here?

0:11:540:11:56

They all ran away. Try under there.

0:11:560:11:59

No, nothing there.

0:12:010:12:03

All you found was a big bit of seaweed!

0:12:040:12:07

Always the way, Alana!

0:12:070:12:09

If you catch anything and you put it in your bucket,

0:12:090:12:13

you've always got to put it back in the water.

0:12:130:12:16

You keep that seaweed safe, Grampa Dougie.

0:12:160:12:19

-Did you enjoy my story about what I did when I was a boy?

-Yes!

0:12:340:12:38

And Grampa's story?

0:12:380:12:40

Yeah!

0:12:400:12:41

What a holiday for Alana and James with their Grampa Dougie.

0:12:430:12:47

He took them to his favourite holiday place when he was a boy.

0:12:470:12:52

They travelled back on a very special paddle steamer.

0:12:520:12:56

They played on the beach, went to the rock pool and caught seaweed,

0:12:560:13:01

and don't forget the caravan, the bike ride

0:13:010:13:04

and that yummy ice cream drink.

0:13:040:13:06

-What was your favourite, Alana?

-The big bike!

0:13:060:13:10

-And what was your favourite bit, James?

-The beach!

0:13:100:13:13

Well, you know, Grampa enjoyed every bit of it,

0:13:130:13:17

being with you and Alana on holiday. Do you want to give me a big hug?

0:13:170:13:23

What a fabulous heap of fun.

0:13:230:13:26

That was James and Alana's and their Grampa Dougie's

0:13:260:13:30

tiny tale about the holidays he used to take when he was young,

0:13:300:13:34

and the things he loved to do and why he has an old suitcase.

0:13:340:13:38

Now that Grampa Dougie has shared his story with them,

0:13:380:13:42

it's time for James and Alana to start their own story.

0:13:420:13:45

Do you know someone who has a story to share?
