This story belongs to Veer

0:00:200:00:22

and his Grandad David.

0:00:220:00:24

It's a tiny tale about Grandad David's life

0:00:260:00:30

and the things he used to do.

0:00:300:00:32

Now it's time for him to share his memories

0:00:330:00:35

and take Veer on a journey of discovery.

0:00:350:00:38

HE LAUGHS

0:00:380:00:40

And another good save.

0:00:400:00:42

Waah!

0:00:420:00:44

Thanks, Veer, for helping me. We need these thick, warm socks.

0:01:030:01:07

Now this looks like an adventure!

0:01:070:01:09

And this nice warm fleece.

0:01:090:01:11

And we need some sunscreen. OK? Going to put this in our bags.

0:01:140:01:19

-Have you got your wellies?

-Yeah.

0:01:190:01:21

Can I have a look?

0:01:210:01:23

Oh, that's good.

0:01:230:01:24

We're going to do something I used to do when I was a little boy.

0:01:240:01:27

We're going to go rambling.

0:01:270:01:29

What's rambling?

0:01:290:01:30

Rambling is like going on a big walk.

0:01:300:01:33

And sometimes you need a map to find out where you're going to.

0:01:330:01:37

And sometimes you need a compass as well.

0:01:370:01:39

I'm going to show you something that I found when I was a little boy.

0:01:390:01:42

Can you read the date on this?

0:01:420:01:44

Yep. 1...8...6...2.

0:01:440:01:50

That's right, 1862. And this is my treasure.

0:01:500:01:53

Ever since I found this old coin,

0:01:530:01:56

I've always been collecting coins and looking for places to find them.

0:01:560:02:00

Rambling and old coins!

0:02:000:02:04

This sounds like a good old-fashioned treasure hunt!

0:02:040:02:07

Look at these old pictures of a country called India.

0:02:160:02:20

It's a very big country which has big, busy cities,

0:02:200:02:25

small villages and lots of countryside too.

0:02:250:02:28

It's the country where Grandad David was born.

0:02:280:02:33

When Grandad David was still a little boy,

0:02:330:02:36

he moved to Cardiff in Wales,

0:02:360:02:38

which is a long way away from India.

0:02:380:02:41

He moved with his parents and brothers and sisters.

0:02:440:02:49

Cardiff is a big, busy city...

0:02:490:02:54

which has many interesting places to visit too.

0:02:540:02:58

So back to this treasure hunt.

0:03:070:03:09

We're going to need a treasure map.

0:03:090:03:11

Trees? Maybe it's a forest?

0:03:250:03:28

Water? Maybe it's the sea?!

0:03:280:03:31

Veer, what do you think of the treasure map?

0:03:460:03:49

Great!

0:03:490:03:51

The treasure map is looking good, Veer.

0:03:560:03:59

Let's get ready to ramble!

0:03:590:04:02

So what is rambling?

0:04:020:04:05

Well, rambling is going for a lovely walk in the countryside

0:04:050:04:08

often with family and friends.

0:04:080:04:10

Look at these old pictures.

0:04:180:04:20

People have been enjoying rambling for many, many years

0:04:200:04:23

and it's a great way to explore and see all kinds of different things,

0:04:230:04:27

like walking in the woods or climbing a hill.

0:04:270:04:29

And you might even see some wild animals.

0:04:290:04:33

-Are you ready to go rambling, Veer?

-Yes!

0:04:490:04:52

Can you see the old ruin down by there?

0:04:520:04:55

That's where we need to go.

0:04:550:04:56

-Shall we have a look at our treasure map and see here we are?

-Yep.

0:05:000:05:04

We are here.

0:05:040:05:06

And where do we need to go to get to the treasure?

0:05:060:05:09

In through the trees, down the path.

0:05:090:05:12

-Past the pirate ship?

-Yep.

0:05:120:05:15

-Down to the old broken house?

-Yep.

0:05:150:05:18

-That's where the treasure is?

-Yeah.

0:05:180:05:20

-Shall we go?

-Yeah.

0:05:200:05:23

Hold onto that.

0:05:250:05:27

When you look from here, it looks like a blue eagle and a red bird.

0:05:270:05:33

Watch out for this mud.

0:05:330:05:35

So when Grandad David was a small boy,

0:05:350:05:37

he found some treasure when he was out rambling.

0:05:370:05:39

I wonder what they may find today?

0:05:390:05:43

Well, Veer, can you see the old house just down by there?

0:05:430:05:46

Yes, I can.

0:05:480:05:50

-What can you see?

-The old window!

0:05:500:05:56

Good spotting, Veer.

0:05:560:05:58

That looks like somewhere that might have treasure.

0:05:580:06:02

-What's that, Grandad?

-Those are bluebells, V.

0:06:020:06:05

Shall we have a look at the map to see how far we came?

0:06:050:06:09

So which way have we got to go now?

0:06:170:06:19

We went through the forest,

0:06:190:06:21

then went by the path,

0:06:210:06:25

-we need to go down the path.

-Yeah. That's the path just there.

0:06:250:06:30

-Shall we go?

-Yes.

0:06:300:06:32

Let's go.

0:06:340:06:35

It's hard work being a rambler with lots of walking,

0:06:380:06:41

but it's also fantastic to be outside in the fresh air

0:06:410:06:44

with your grandad.

0:06:440:06:45

But, of course, you never know what the weather's going to be like.

0:07:010:07:05

The rain is coming down heavily, but Veer and his grandad

0:07:050:07:08

have found a heritage centre to visit in the woods

0:07:080:07:11

and shelter from the rain.

0:07:110:07:13

What a find!

0:07:130:07:14

And it wasn't even on the treasure map!

0:07:140:07:18

Look at all these chicks, Veer.

0:07:200:07:22

They look like brothers and sisters.

0:07:220:07:24

Do you know how many brothers and sisters I've got?

0:07:240:07:27

-13.

-That's correct.

0:07:270:07:30

We're six brother and seven sisters.

0:07:300:07:33

Wowwee! Look at this old picture of some of Grandad David's brothers

0:07:330:07:38

and sisters taken a long time ago.

0:07:380:07:40

What was it like playing with all those brothers and sisters?

0:07:400:07:44

Oh, it was lots of fun, Veer. We had a very big garden

0:07:440:07:47

and when it was raining, we had a table in the garden as well

0:07:470:07:51

and we used to sit underneath the table and pretend we were pirates.

0:07:510:07:54

Pirates?! Now that sounds like fun!

0:07:540:07:58

Wait till you see who else is at the heritage centre.

0:08:000:08:04

Veer, this is Phillip the goat.

0:08:080:08:11

-Would you like to stroke him?

-Yeah.

0:08:110:08:13

Hello, Phillip.

0:08:190:08:21

Did you know goats sometimes live high up in the mountains?

0:08:210:08:24

-No.

-That reminds me of a story.

0:08:240:08:27

A couple of years ago, me and your mum,

0:08:270:08:30

we went up high in the Himalaya mountains.

0:08:300:08:32

Now long did it take you to go there?

0:08:320:08:35

Oh, it took us a very long time.

0:08:350:08:37

We left early in the morning and we got there late in the evening.

0:08:370:08:42

It was very high up.

0:08:420:08:44

What did you see at the top of the mountain?

0:08:440:08:46

Oh, we had a fantastic view.

0:08:460:08:48

You could see the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest.

0:08:480:08:51

And it was covered in snow.

0:08:510:08:53

We saw the blue sky and we could see for miles around us.

0:08:530:08:56

Oh, wow!

0:08:560:08:59

The Himalayas are a huge range of mountains

0:09:070:09:09

that are so big that they reach across a few different countries,

0:09:090:09:13

including India where Grandad David was born.

0:09:130:09:16

The Himalayas are a long way from Wales.

0:09:160:09:20

And look how beautiful they are!

0:09:220:09:24

Here's a goat climbing up the mountains.

0:09:260:09:29

How did it get up there?!

0:09:290:09:31

Grandad David and Veer's mummy Sharon

0:09:350:09:37

walked up a footpath that took them very, very high up a mountain.

0:09:370:09:42

The very biggest mountain in the Himalayas is called Mount Everest

0:09:420:09:46

and Grandad David has seen it, but didn't climb it.

0:09:460:09:50

Only expert mountain climbers can climb Mount Everest.

0:09:500:09:55

I wonder what else they might find at the heritage centre?

0:10:000:10:03

Veer, when we were small we used to camping all the time

0:10:070:10:10

with my brothers and my friends.

0:10:100:10:12

And sometimes it would be raining

0:10:120:10:14

and we used to just sit inside our tents.

0:10:140:10:17

But sometimes we used to go fishing.

0:10:170:10:19

We used to sit for ages on the sides of the riverbank

0:10:190:10:22

waiting for a fish to come.

0:10:220:10:25

Have you caught anything?

0:10:250:10:27

No, I never caught anything at all.

0:10:270:10:30

I wish I did.

0:10:300:10:31

Veer, would you like to go fishing?

0:10:310:10:34

Yes, please!

0:10:340:10:36

So Grandad David enjoyed fishing as a young boy.

0:10:360:10:40

That sounds like fun.

0:10:400:10:41

Let's get back to their treasure hunt.

0:10:410:10:43

And, guess what, it's stopped raining and the sun has come out!

0:10:430:10:48

Time to find that treasure.

0:10:480:10:49

-Can you see how the sea's coming in and hitting the rocks?

-Yeah.

0:10:550:10:59

There's lots of sand here, isn't it?

0:11:050:11:07

Yeah. But there's not lots of sand here, it's just rocks everywhere.

0:11:070:11:13

This is called Rock Way Out.

0:11:130:11:16

-It's slippery.

-Almost there.

0:11:160:11:19

-Water!

-Yes.

0:11:190:11:22

Wow!

0:11:220:11:24

They've arrived at the old house. So where is that treasure?

0:11:250:11:29

Shall we have a look on the map and see where we are?

0:11:290:11:32

-Yeah.

-We must be close to the treasure.

0:11:320:11:34

Where's the cross, Veer? Where do you think it is?

0:11:370:11:41

-Here.

-X marks the spot!

0:11:410:11:43

It must be just by here. Let's have a look.

0:11:430:11:46

I can see the treasure.

0:11:520:11:55

-Where?

-On the window!

0:11:550:11:58

That's right. Shall we get the treasure?

0:11:580:12:02

OK.

0:12:020:12:03

-Oh, look at this!

-What are they?

-Gold coins.

0:12:040:12:09

The pirates left the coins here.

0:12:110:12:13

That's right.

0:12:130:12:15

Fantastic! Lots of coins too! It looks just like the old coin

0:12:150:12:19

Grandad found when he was a young boy.

0:12:190:12:22

But, guess what, they're not real.

0:12:220:12:24

They're made of chocolate!

0:12:240:12:26

I think Grandad David and Veer

0:12:320:12:34

will enjoy munching on that chocolate treasure.

0:12:340:12:37

So you want a sweet, Grandad?

0:12:370:12:39

Thank you, Veer.

0:12:390:12:42

Grandad, thank you for taking me rambling.

0:12:420:12:45

Thank you, Veer, for spending time with me on our adventure.

0:12:450:12:48

What part do you like the best, Veer?

0:12:480:12:50

The treasure hunt.

0:12:500:12:52

Veer, you're a rambler now just like your grandad.

0:12:520:12:58

What a fantastic treasure map you drew.

0:12:580:13:02

And we found out all about Grandad's love of rambling

0:13:020:13:05

and got to meet Phillip the goat, too.

0:13:050:13:08

Grandad David was right, rambling is good fun.

0:13:080:13:12

So now they can eat their special treasure.

0:13:120:13:16

-Would you like to come rambling again with me?

-Yes.

0:13:160:13:18

That would be cool!

0:13:180:13:21

What a fabulous heap of fun!

0:13:240:13:27

That was Veer and Grandad David's tiny tale

0:13:270:13:30

about the things Grandad David used to do

0:13:300:13:33

and the fun he had and why he has an old coin.

0:13:330:13:37

Grandad David has shared his story with Veer

0:13:370:13:40

and now Veer is starting his own story.

0:13:400:13:42

Do you know someone who has a story to share?
