This story belongs to David

0:00:220:00:24

and his Grandad Billy.

0:00:240:00:26

It's a tiny tale about Grandad Billy

0:00:330:00:36

and the things he used to do.

0:00:360:00:39

Wayyy...!

0:00:400:00:41

Whoopee!

0:00:410:00:43

Wayyy!

0:00:440:00:46

Now it's time for Grandad Billy

0:00:470:00:50

to take David on a journey of discovery

0:00:500:00:53

and share his memories of when he was younger.

0:00:530:00:56

Grandad Billy had a very important job -

0:00:590:01:02

he was a lighthouse keeper on a small island called North Ronaldsay,

0:01:020:01:07

which is part of the Orkney Islands, off the coast of Scotland.

0:01:070:01:10

Lighthouses can be found on the mainland, on small islands -

0:01:100:01:14

like Grandad Billy's -

0:01:140:01:16

and out at sea on their own.

0:01:160:01:19

A lighthouse is a tall building with a light on top of it.

0:01:200:01:23

The light, at night, lets sailors know

0:01:230:01:26

that they might be sailing too close to land,

0:01:260:01:29

or dangerous rocks hidden in the sea.

0:01:290:01:32

There are nearly 300 lighthouses around the coast of Britain.

0:01:320:01:36

Have you seen one?

0:01:360:01:38

Grandad Billy and David are playing a card game in the kitchen.

0:01:380:01:42

Snap!

0:01:420:01:44

We used to play cards in the lighthouse.

0:01:440:01:48

And look here at this old film.

0:01:480:01:50

There are some other lighthouse keepers playing cards

0:01:500:01:54

and doing the dishes, too!

0:01:540:01:57

-Would you like to come and visit the lighthouse, David?

-Yes, Grandad.

0:01:570:02:01

Wow! A trip to the lighthouse sounds like great fun.

0:02:060:02:09

I wonder how they're going to get there.

0:02:090:02:12

They're strapping themselves in.

0:02:160:02:18

Is it a boat to get them to the island?

0:02:180:02:21

There you go, you're safe now.

0:02:210:02:24

No, it's an aeroplane!

0:02:280:02:31

How exciting!

0:02:310:02:33

David lives on the biggest island in Orkney,

0:02:410:02:43

and Grandad Billy is taking him to visit the small island

0:02:430:02:46

he lives and worked on.

0:02:460:02:48

If a lighthouse is out at sea,

0:02:510:02:53

people have to get there by helicopter or boat.

0:02:530:02:57

They have to be lowered down by ropes onto the lighthouse

0:02:570:03:00

or the rocks beside it.

0:03:000:03:03

Ah, there it is - Grandad Billy's lighthouse!

0:03:040:03:08

The building with white stripes.

0:03:080:03:11

It's time to land the plane and explore the lighthouse.

0:03:110:03:16

Grandad Billy and David talk about being a lighthouse keeper.

0:03:320:03:37

Well, David, I have been a lighthouse keeper for many years.

0:03:370:03:40

I've lived here all my life,

0:03:400:03:43

and as a young boy growing up on the island,

0:03:430:03:45

I watched the lighthouse tower above the island,

0:03:450:03:49

and I eventually became a keeper here at this lighthouse.

0:03:490:03:53

It's one of the oldest working lighthouses in Scotland,

0:03:530:03:58

and Grandad Billy has worked in it for many, many years.

0:03:580:04:01

-So this is the lighthouse flag, David.

-Oh.

0:04:150:04:18

-It used to be raised every morning at nine o'clock.

-OK.

0:04:180:04:22

-And would you like to help me raise it?

-Yes, Grandad.

0:04:220:04:26

There we go.

0:04:270:04:30

Pull!

0:04:300:04:32

Well done.

0:04:330:04:34

The flag is raised

0:04:340:04:36

when very important people come to visit the lighthouse,

0:04:360:04:39

and today the flag has been raised because David is visiting!

0:04:390:04:43

It's time for Grandad Billy and David

0:04:450:04:47

to climb to the top of the lighthouse.

0:04:470:04:50

It's very tall!

0:04:530:04:55

I wonder how many stairs there are.

0:04:550:04:57

..174...

0:04:570:04:59

175...

0:04:590:05:01

176...

0:05:010:05:04

Phew!

0:05:040:05:06

176 stairs...!

0:05:060:05:08

That is a long way up!

0:05:080:05:10

Right, David, you see out there?

0:05:130:05:16

See the skerry?

0:05:160:05:17

That's where there's been many a shipwreck over the years.

0:05:170:05:21

Lots of them.

0:05:210:05:24

Well, David, your great-grandfather

0:05:240:05:27

was on one of the boats that crashed onto the rocks

0:05:270:05:31

away out in the bay there,

0:05:310:05:33

and he jumped overboard for safety.

0:05:330:05:36

And this is a photo of the actual ship he was on...

0:05:360:05:39

sinking.

0:05:390:05:41

It was in big trouble.

0:05:410:05:43

But don't worry, David's great- grandfather was quickly rescued

0:05:430:05:47

and was taken to safety.

0:05:470:05:49

I wonder what else they can see from the top of the lighthouse.

0:05:490:05:53

Can you see anything out here?

0:05:530:05:55

What are these things bobbing in the sea?

0:05:580:06:00

I can see seals.

0:06:020:06:04

-Seals?

-Seals.

0:06:040:06:06

Seals, a way out there.

0:06:060:06:08

Beautiful seals.

0:06:100:06:12

What do you see away out here?

0:06:120:06:14

-Where?

-Away out here?

0:06:140:06:16

-A ship.

-That's right.

0:06:210:06:24

That's a big ship.

0:06:240:06:26

Will that ship see our lighthouse, David, do you think?

0:06:260:06:29

-Yes.

-Yes, that's good.

0:06:290:06:31

So, now we are thinking about winding up the machine here.

0:06:440:06:47

And that's what the light-keepers had to do to keep the light turning.

0:06:470:06:52

I will show you now how to wind it up.

0:06:520:06:54

You have to be strong.

0:06:560:06:59

There you go, there you go.

0:06:590:07:02

Heavy, isn't it?

0:07:030:07:05

I think that'll do for the moment.

0:07:070:07:09

Look at this old film of a lighthouse keeper

0:07:090:07:12

winding up the machine in the same lighthouse as Grandad Billy's.

0:07:120:07:16

And the lighthouse keeper has to wind the machine every hour.

0:07:160:07:21

Imagine running up those 176 stairs every hour!

0:07:210:07:25

Lighthouse keepers must have been really fit.

0:07:250:07:29

This is how we do it nowadays.

0:07:290:07:31

We don't have to wind the light any more.

0:07:310:07:34

We just have to push this green button.

0:07:340:07:37

-So, would you like to help me push this button?

-Mm-hm.

0:07:370:07:40

Right, away you go. One, two, three!

0:07:400:07:44

There it goes.

0:07:440:07:45

Let it go now. That's lovely.

0:07:450:07:47

Pushing the button turns on the machine,

0:07:490:07:51

which makes the light turn.

0:07:510:07:54

Now it's time for Grandad Billy

0:08:030:08:06

to show David where the light comes from.

0:08:060:08:09

-So, David, do you see this lamp here?

-Yes.

0:08:140:08:17

-This was used to shine the light out. In the old days.

-Oh.

0:08:170:08:23

In the olden days, the lamp was lit using a liquid called paraffin.

0:08:230:08:29

The paraffin was lit by a match.

0:08:290:08:32

So what do you think they are?

0:08:330:08:35

Light bulbs.

0:08:350:08:38

They're giant light bulbs. Big ones.

0:08:380:08:41

Nowadays, the giant light bulbs are lit using electricity,

0:08:420:08:47

and come on automatically when it gets dark.

0:08:470:08:50

How clever!

0:08:500:08:51

Wow! Look how bright those lamps are!

0:08:540:08:57

Look, some fog has appeared at the lighthouse.

0:09:110:09:14

Do you think the sailors can still see the lighthouse through the fog?

0:09:140:09:18

In the old days, when it got foggy,

0:09:180:09:20

they used something very noisy -

0:09:200:09:23

a fog horn.

0:09:230:09:25

-So, David, this is the fog horn.

-OK.

0:09:270:09:31

And when sailors couldn't see the light, when it was foggy,

0:09:310:09:35

we sounded the fog horn.

0:09:350:09:37

OK.

0:09:370:09:39

So, would you like to do an impression of the fog horn?

0:09:390:09:41

Yes, Grandad.

0:09:410:09:43

ERRRRRRRRRRRRR!

0:09:430:09:46

That's very good!

0:09:460:09:48

-Can I do one now?

-Yeah.

0:09:480:09:50

ARRRRRRRRR!

0:09:500:09:52

That's not so good.

0:09:520:09:54

-No.

-Would you like to hear the real thing?

-Yeah!

0:09:540:09:57

Let's put these on, David.

0:09:570:09:58

Grandad Billy and David must put headphones on

0:09:580:10:01

to protect their ears from what they are about to hear.

0:10:010:10:04

So, let's hear the fog horn.

0:10:040:10:06

One, two, three...

0:10:060:10:09

VERY LOUD LONG BLAST

0:10:090:10:13

-How loud was that, David?

-Really loud.

0:10:140:10:17

Who do you think heard it?

0:10:170:10:19

The whole island.

0:10:190:10:20

The whole island, I think, indeed. Yes.

0:10:200:10:24

So when the sailors couldn't see the light, they heard the fog horns

0:10:240:10:29

which told them to keep away from the dangerous rocks.

0:10:290:10:33

-We had good fun.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:10:460:10:49

Grandad Billy wants to show David some treasure he collected

0:10:510:10:54

from boats that were shipwrecked many years ago.

0:10:540:10:58

Look, they're sitting next to an old shipwreck

0:10:580:11:00

that's been washed ashore.

0:11:000:11:03

I wonder what hidden treasures David will find.

0:11:030:11:06

Look at this, David, this is treasure.

0:11:060:11:09

Whoa, that's really shiny.

0:11:090:11:11

-See the lovely gold coin in the middle?

-Yeah.

0:11:110:11:14

-That's treasure. Real treasure.

-OK.

0:11:140:11:18

-Would you like to have a lucky dip in the chest?

-Yes, Grandad.

0:11:200:11:24

I'll help you to open it. Whoops...!

0:11:250:11:27

What is this, David?

0:11:300:11:34

I think it's a whale's tooth.

0:11:340:11:36

-It looks very old to me.

-Yeah.

0:11:360:11:40

-And that was washed ashore on the beach, too.

-OK.

0:11:400:11:42

Very exciting.

0:11:460:11:48

This looks like a golden spoon.

0:11:480:11:50

Oh, yes. That's a golden spoon

0:11:500:11:53

that was washed ashore here

0:11:530:11:55

a long time ago.

0:11:550:11:57

OK.

0:11:570:11:59

So, all this treasure was found on the island near the lighthouse.

0:12:020:12:06

So, David did you have fun?

0:12:130:12:15

Yes! Lots of fun.

0:12:150:12:17

We played cards.

0:12:170:12:20

Snap!

0:12:200:12:21

We went on a tiny aeroplane.

0:12:230:12:26

We raised a flag.

0:12:270:12:30

Well done!

0:12:300:12:32

We looked in the light room.

0:12:320:12:35

-What do you think they are?

-Light bulbs.

0:12:350:12:38

We looked for seals.

0:12:380:12:41

-Seals.

-Seals, a way out there.

0:12:410:12:44

We heard the fog horn.

0:12:450:12:47

One, two, three...

0:12:470:12:49

LOUD BLAST

0:12:490:12:51

We looked at old treasure.

0:12:550:12:58

This looks like a golden spoon.

0:12:580:13:01

What have you enjoyed the most?

0:13:010:13:03

Raising the flag!

0:13:030:13:05

Because it's really important.

0:13:050:13:07

Would you like to give me a really big hug now?

0:13:070:13:11

-Yes, Grandad.

-Come on, then.

0:13:110:13:14

What a fabulous heap of fun!

0:13:180:13:21

That was David and Grandad Billy's tiny tale

0:13:210:13:24

about being a lighthouse keeper.

0:13:240:13:26

Now Grandad Billy has shared his story with David,

0:13:260:13:30

it's time for David to start his very own story.

0:13:300:13:33

Do you know someone with a story to share?
