This story belongs to Callum and Gabriel and their mum Mary.

0:00:220:00:27

It's a tiny tale about Mum Mary and the things she used to do.

0:00:310:00:35

Yes, very good. Ready, steady, go.

0:00:400:00:43

Oh, great catch, Mum!

0:00:430:00:44

Now it's time for Mum Mary to share her memories

0:00:510:00:55

and take Callum and Gabriel on a journey of discovery.

0:00:550:00:59

Callum, what is that? That's lovely.

0:01:020:01:04

It's a picture of our house.

0:01:040:01:06

Gabriel, let's take a look at Callum's picture.

0:01:060:01:09

That's a lovely picture. How many rectangles did Callum draw?

0:01:090:01:14

Will we count them?

0:01:140:01:15

One, two,

0:01:150:01:17

three,

0:01:170:01:19

four,

0:01:190:01:21

oh, five.

0:01:210:01:23

There's a lot of rectangles.

0:01:230:01:25

Mum Mary is telling Callum and Gabriel about her job.

0:01:250:01:28

She is an architect.

0:01:300:01:32

An architect is a person who designs the buildings we live and work in.

0:01:320:01:37

Architects do lots and lots of line drawings,

0:01:370:01:41

so that builders know how to build them.

0:01:410:01:44

Would you like to see some drawings that I did one time

0:01:440:01:48

-when I was in Italy?

-Yes.

0:01:480:01:50

Gabriel, look at this.

0:01:500:01:52

What kind of building is that there?

0:01:520:01:55

-A church.

-Yes, very good. Well done.

0:01:550:01:58

Mum Mary was born in a country called America.

0:02:090:02:13

As a little girl, Mum Mary loved old buildings

0:02:130:02:16

and dreamed of living in a big city with lots of beautiful architecture.

0:02:160:02:21

I first became interested in architecture when I was a little girl

0:02:210:02:25

and I really enjoyed drawing and looking at pictures of houses

0:02:250:02:30

and I always used to think about

0:02:300:02:32

what kind of house would I like to live in.

0:02:320:02:36

Because I loved architecture so much,

0:02:360:02:38

I wanted to live in a much bigger city

0:02:380:02:41

because I loved to see all the big, beautiful buildings there.

0:02:410:02:45

After university, I was really lucky

0:02:450:02:48

and got to move to places like Italy and Ireland.

0:02:480:02:52

And then later Scotland as well.

0:02:520:02:55

While travelling in Scotland, Mum Mary met Dad Mark.

0:02:550:02:58

They fell in love and decided to get married and live in Glasgow.

0:02:580:03:02

Oh, look, someone else has joined the table. I wonder who it is.

0:03:130:03:18

-This is my dad.

-Hello.

0:03:180:03:21

I have an idea, boys.

0:03:210:03:24

Why don't we play a game, a "design a house" game?

0:03:240:03:27

What we are going to do is we are going to add the things

0:03:270:03:31

that are missing from this house.

0:03:310:03:33

Can anybody think of something that is missing?

0:03:330:03:36

-Callum, what do you think is missing?

-Some doors and windows?

0:03:360:03:40

Ah, good point. Right, let's see.

0:03:400:03:42

Callum, could you maybe choose a door for this house?

0:03:420:03:46

Where do you think it should go?

0:03:460:03:48

Very good.

0:03:480:03:50

Gabriel, what is missing from up here?

0:03:500:03:53

I think that we're missing the roof. Shall we put the roof on?

0:03:530:03:58

Here we go. Let's stick that down there.

0:03:580:04:02

What else could we do with, Callum, maybe some windows?

0:04:020:04:06

-Oh, brilliant. That looks brilliant.

-Excellent effort.

0:04:060:04:10

Boys, did you know that your grandad Martin was an architect as well,

0:04:100:04:15

-just like Mummy?

-Yes.

0:04:150:04:17

In fact, there's something very special about the house

0:04:170:04:21

that Daddy grew up in.

0:04:210:04:22

Grandad Martin designed that house.

0:04:220:04:26

Here they are.

0:04:270:04:28

Your grandad did all of these drawings and he had to think a lot

0:04:280:04:32

about all the different things, such as where does the door go?

0:04:320:04:37

Where do the windows go?

0:04:370:04:39

Wouldn't it be nice to go and visit your granny

0:04:390:04:42

-and grandad's house just now?

-Yes.

-Does that sound good, Gabriel?

0:04:420:04:46

Will you give me a big smile if you think that's a good idea?

0:04:460:04:50

This is my granny and this is the house that Grandad Martin designed.

0:05:000:05:06

Grandad Martin designed this special house which is in Scotland.

0:05:110:05:16

He had to be very clever because he was designing a house

0:05:160:05:19

that had to fit in a very small space between two other houses.

0:05:190:05:24

Another thing he had to think about was what the house would look like,

0:05:240:05:29

because it had to fit in with the other old houses on the street.

0:05:290:05:32

And here's a photo of Grandad Martin holding Daddy Mark

0:05:320:05:36

when he was a baby.

0:05:360:05:38

What a lovely visit to Granny Ann's house.

0:05:420:05:45

Let's find out where the boys are going next.

0:05:450:05:48

So, boys, did you know that architects have to think about

0:05:510:05:55

-something else other than the outside of the house?

-The inside.

0:05:550:05:59

That's right! Do you know what we're going to do?

0:05:590:06:01

We are going to visit a very special big house

0:06:010:06:04

that was designed for a competition. It's like a dream house.

0:06:040:06:07

Do you know what's really funny? There's even jelly in the garden.

0:06:070:06:11

Jelly? That's silly.

0:06:110:06:13

Look at the size of those massive jelly pots.

0:06:280:06:32

I think they were made for giants.

0:06:320:06:34

Watch out, you'll make yourselves dizzy!

0:06:340:06:39

Boys, boys, come over here, come over here.

0:06:420:06:45

This is the House for an Art Lover.

0:06:450:06:47

And it's a really special place to your mum and dad

0:06:470:06:51

because this is where we got married.

0:06:510:06:53

Now, this house was designed by a famous Scottish architect

0:06:530:06:58

called Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

0:06:580:07:01

And he loved nature and used to go for walks

0:07:010:07:03

and draw all the things that he saw.

0:07:030:07:06

He started to use these things in his buildings,

0:07:060:07:10

things like birds and flowers and seeds.

0:07:100:07:13

And I thought maybe we could have a look around

0:07:130:07:16

and see if we could find some of them in this building.

0:07:160:07:20

-I Spy, I want to go first.

-Oh, that sounds good.

0:07:200:07:23

I love I Spy. I wish I could play.

0:07:250:07:27

This big fancy house is called House for an Art Lover.

0:07:350:07:39

And it is now an art museum. People can also get married here.

0:07:390:07:43

Which is just what Mum Mary and Dad Mark did.

0:07:430:07:47

Look how happy they look.

0:07:470:07:49

Look at these other buildings that the Scottish designer

0:07:490:07:53

Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed a long time ago.

0:07:530:07:56

He designed houses and also schools.

0:07:560:07:59

He really liked to use colours like pink, purple, white and black.

0:07:590:08:03

Look at all the tables and chairs and lights he's created too.

0:08:030:08:08

Look at the beautiful red roses.

0:08:220:08:24

They were a favourite design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

0:08:240:08:28

Right, let's get this game of I Spy started.

0:08:280:08:32

I spy with my little eye something beginning with F.

0:08:330:08:38

It's a flower.

0:08:380:08:40

Oh, look at this room.

0:08:460:08:49

Oh, there's some exciting things up here. Wow!

0:08:490:08:53

Oh, yes, look at that flower, Gabriel.

0:08:530:08:56

I spy with my little eye something beginning with B.

0:09:010:09:05

It's a bird.

0:09:050:09:07

Oh, what's this? Oh, wow, look at this room, Callum.

0:09:100:09:15

I see seeds.

0:09:150:09:17

What else do you see, Callum?

0:09:170:09:19

-A piano.

-Yes.

0:09:190:09:20

-Oh!

-Flowers.

-Gabriel, I spy with my little eye

0:09:200:09:26

something purple.

0:09:260:09:27

Can you give me a smile if you see something purple?

0:09:270:09:32

Well, that was lots and lots of fun.

0:09:380:09:40

Let's see if we can find more interesting shapes

0:09:400:09:43

around the city.

0:09:430:09:45

Look at that tall building.

0:09:510:09:54

And there's a wavy one.

0:09:540:09:55

Oh, there's the building that Mum Mary helped design.

0:09:550:09:59

Fantastic.

0:09:590:10:00

I had to think of a lot of different things

0:10:000:10:03

when I was designing that building.

0:10:030:10:05

I had to think about, how tall was the building going to be?

0:10:050:10:09

What colour was it going to be?

0:10:090:10:10

And even where do the stairs go and where do people's cars go?

0:10:100:10:14

-Look, there's a cone on his head.

-Oh, my goodness!

0:10:170:10:21

A long, long time ago, people used to live in small houses like this.

0:10:250:10:29

It's called a croft house

0:10:290:10:31

and everyone in the house used to live and sleep in one room.

0:10:310:10:36

In cities nowadays, there are lots of people and houses can be built

0:10:360:10:40

on top of one other to save space, like a high-rise.

0:10:400:10:43

These houses in Glasgow are called tenements.

0:10:450:10:48

And although they were built many years ago,

0:10:480:10:51

people still live in them today. Houses can look exciting, too.

0:10:510:10:55

Houses can be small or big, they can be all sorts of shapes and sizes.

0:10:550:11:00

And they are designed by lots of different architects.

0:11:000:11:03

Even buildings that used to be factories or barns

0:11:030:11:07

have now been turned into houses.

0:11:070:11:09

This is the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow,

0:11:220:11:26

which was designed by a lady called Zaha Hadid.

0:11:260:11:29

What an unusual-shaped building.

0:11:330:11:35

Callum, now we are in another exciting building.

0:11:370:11:40

Did you notice anything interesting about it when we came in,

0:11:400:11:44

-something about the shape?

-It's a bit pointy and a bit like waves.

0:11:440:11:48

It is, it is a bit like waves. Why do you think that is?

0:11:480:11:51

Because the river is just next to the building.

0:11:510:11:54

So, boys, after seeing all these exciting buildings today,

0:11:540:11:58

I understand that you've designed your own dream house.

0:11:580:12:01

Callum, I'd love to see that. Can you show me?

0:12:010:12:04

Oh, Callum and Gabriel, this looks like a castle.

0:12:040:12:08

Is this the dream house that you designed?

0:12:080:12:11

-Yes, we designed it.

-Oh, wow, this is a really lovely pool.

0:12:110:12:16

-Did you colour in this swimming pool?

-Yes, he did.

0:12:160:12:19

Wow, what a fantastic job!

0:12:190:12:21

Boys, we've had an exciting time, haven't we?

0:12:210:12:24

What did you enjoy the most?

0:12:240:12:26

I enjoyed going on the bus tour

0:12:260:12:28

and seeing all the buildings you designed.

0:12:280:12:31

And I really enjoyed playing football in the park.

0:12:310:12:35

What a fantastic family day out.

0:12:350:12:39

The boys played football in the park.

0:12:390:12:42

Mum Mary showed Callum and Gabriel her special sketchbook

0:12:430:12:47

from when she was younger.

0:12:470:12:48

They had silly fun running around giant jelly pots.

0:12:510:12:55

It was great fun exploring the House for an Art Lover.

0:12:580:13:02

They also visited Granny Ann

0:13:050:13:07

and found out about how Grandad Martin designed his own house.

0:13:070:13:12

All topped off with an exciting bus ride.

0:13:140:13:17

My favourite part has been having so much fun with all of you.

0:13:190:13:23

Can we have a cuddle?

0:13:230:13:25

What a fabulous heap of fun.

0:13:290:13:31

That was Callum, Gabriel and Mum Mary's tiny tale

0:13:310:13:36

about the things mum Mary used to do and the fun she had.

0:13:360:13:40

Mum Mary has shared her story with Callum and Gabriel.

0:13:400:13:44

Now, Callum and Gabriel are starting their own story.

0:13:440:13:47

Do you know someone with a story to share?
