Morning, guys, Ricky here with your Tuesday Newsround. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
Coming up: The plan to help out puffins. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
And a very unusual wedding. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:20
Wimbledon has started. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:24
And Andy Murray got over worries about his sore hip | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
to win his opening match. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
The reigning champ beat Alexander Bublik in under two hours | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
and will play Germany's Dustin Brown in Round Two. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
And it was a pretty easy day for British number one | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Johanna Konta, who got through to the next round | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
where she'll play Donna Vekic. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
Now, did you know that nearly 40,000 tennis fans came | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
through the turnstiles here at Wimbledon on | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
the first day alone? | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
That's a lot! | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
So we caught up with a few of them to find out what they were | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
looking forward to. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
It's Wimbledon. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
It's one of the biggest events in the world. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
I'm very excited to be here at Wimbledon because I haven't | 0:01:06 | 0:01:13
met many players and I've only seen them on TV. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
It's really amazing to be here. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
I've never been here before. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
It's really different than I imagined in my head. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
I like Nadal and Federer. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
They are really good and they're really graceful | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
when they hit their shots. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
I really, really want to see Andy Murray because he is ranked | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
number one in the world and I can't wait to see him play. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:36
It's amazing because he's the person I look up to when I play tennis | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
and I just want to be like when I'm older. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
I know I'm going to see the Nadal match on Court One. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
I'm going to see a bit of the Venus Williams match. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:50
I saw Federer over there warming up. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
What?! | 0:01:52 | 0:01:57
Everyone loves puffins. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
But things haven't been so great for these guys lately. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
Across the UK, their numbers are down and now there's a threat | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
they could disappear altogether. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
Whitney has been to find out more. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
What do we know about puffins? | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
They are small, brilliant swimmers. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
They are often paired together for life. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
How sweet. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16
I'm here in the very windy Ilse of Mull, as you can see by my hair, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
to take that boat out to the island of Lunga to see some. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:27
Dave, who is a bird expert in Mull, is going to help me find | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
out more about puffins. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
It has been a long journey but we finally made it. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:42
Check this out. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
They are everywhere. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
Take a look at this. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
They are so cute. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
Hello. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
Just behind us is some beautiful birds. | 0:02:51 | 0:03:01
Apart from being beautiful, what is so special about them? | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
These puffins are now in serious trouble. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
They are on what you call the red list. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
They could go extinct. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
One in ten of all puffins come from the UK so we have got that | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
responsibility to look after them. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
Elsewhere, places like Iceland and parts of northern Scotland, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
the puffin colonies have gone and that is what we are | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
really worried about. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
Why are they declining in other parts of the UK? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
What we think is the biggest decline is to do with global warming | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
and climate change. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
These birds have evolved to catch particular types of fish | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
in particular temperatures of seas and as the temperature of the sea | 0:03:32 | 0:03:37
is rising those fish are moving further away and out of reach | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
of the puffins. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:41
What can we do in order to protect these puffins? | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
The RSPB has launched Project Puffin and it is trying to get people | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
to take photographs of the puffins as they come in with | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
the fish that they catch. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
They catch things like sand eels. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
With that we can work out why there is a problem in other | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
parts of their range. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
Why do you love them so much? | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
They are just fantastic little characters, aren't they? | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
Just the fact that they look so happy and secure | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
and yet we know deep down now that they are in trouble. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
We could really help this bird and keep it looking bright | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
and cheerful and happy and go on enjoying it for years to come. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
I think it is time to leave these funny and beautiful birds | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
in peace but honestly, despite the weather, I could sit | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
here and watch them all day. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Next to Mexico, where this happened over the weekend. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
The mayor of San Pedro Huamelula married a crocodile. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
Now, this is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
It's part of a festival to celebrate the town's patron saint. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
The reptile bride, dressed in white with a flower crown on its head, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
is taken around the town to music before the ceremony takes place. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:44
I hope there were no crocodile tears. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
That's all from me, Newsround's back right here at 8:15am. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:57 |
